Northrop N9MB Flying Wing at Planes of Fame

  • The Northrop N9MB flying wing was the 4th in the N9M series of aircraft produced by Jack Northrop as test aircraft for the flying wing design. The N9MB at Planes of Fame is the only remaining airframe of the N9M series. The N9MB was carefully restored over a 13 year period and is in flight status today. This aircraft is flown regularly at the museum and other local airshows. This aircraft is the actual great-grandfather of the modern day B-2 Spirit flying wing heavy bomber.

    The flaps operate in a similar manner to other aircraft. The flaps are extended from the bottom of the wing in the center section, and extend from just inboard of the elevons across each side of the wing to the engine nacelles. A search of google images will find various photos of them.

      You must have been born "to late". We baby boomers did not have computers or internet but bits and pieces of info could be found in "Popular Mechanics Illustrated" type magazines throughout the 50's and 60's. The instability of the design was mentioned many times both before and after computers were employed (as on the F117 and B2) to help give the human pilot a "fighting chance" of controlling the aircraft. I learned of the design's problems by building/flying boomerangs!
      I'm not trying to be negative, nor do I have a bad attitude. I am simply someone who has an interest in "things mechanical", and I pay for it every time I visit the museum in Dayton. Others see the "glory", I see the failures.
      It is my understanding the sole remaing prototype is on display in Washington, keep it on the ground.

      +f4udhorn The final NTSB report has been released. All components from the plane were accounted for and engines were functioning normally. The NTSB concluded based on witnesses and captured audio that it was an undetermined flight control failure. Continuity and operation of the flight controls could not be tested because of the damage. They believed that the pilot was attempting to exit the plane but did not have enough altitude.

    The YB49 was a superior aircraft, quite superior to the B-36 of which was the aircraft which was "chosen" by the Air Force in the final decision days of 1949-1950. The Flying Wing was faster and had more than enough cargo capacity as well as bomb load capability than the old B-29 of which it was to replace. As fast as the future B-47 and B-52 the YB49 was the victim of classic corrupt infighting in Washington Military and Political circles of the day. Senator Stuart Symington was the culprit as he and his cronies were paid off by the manufacturer of the B-36 and investigations later on were either stifled by the military bureaucracy or completely black balled by the Senators innner circle. The YB49 flew from Edwards AFB in California to Andrews AFB in 1949 in four and a half hours.....Truman ordered 300 after he saw and was advised by experts of the Wings capabilities......Northrop would have been shut down by the politicians if Jack Northrop had pursued justice in this affair.....More Madness out of our government as payoffs over ride the public's best interest and our wallets good care.....

      Reality: They were not the only aircraft manufacturer that wasn't good buddies w/ the people in Washington. I live near the Curtis-Wright/North American/Rockwell plant here in Central Ohio and have heard the story repeated through the course of the last three or four aircraft prototypes that were developed/constructed here. That in turn meant no employment for those in related trades, either directly or with suppliers.
      Also, this attitude wasn't limited to aircraft companies. as this was the time period of questionable politics such as the Texas "Teapot Scandal" etc. In which some future presidents of the US played roles (Johnson, Nixon, etc.).
      You could also bring up the same situation in the auto industry with Tucker.
      That was life in the U.S. and we didn't learn our lessons.

      That is not my understanding. I have been a fan of the YB35 and YB49 since my dad told me all about it. My dad had worked for Northrop, admittedly not on this plane, but knew a lot of people that did. Some folks seem to be looking back through rose colored glasses on this plane. The consensus of the people that flew that plane was a consideration for too much correction for pitch and yaw. These planes would fly sometimes for hours fine, and then go out of control. Everyone seems to forget that Northrop themselves said of the B2 Flying Wing is that it was made possible because of computer systems that made corrections on the fly at incredible speeds. That is why the current version works so well, in addition to the fact that the wing has a fuselage and is a more stable design. Here is a fantastic article that is along the exact lines of my previous research and all that my dad told me for years. www.historynet.com/northrops-radical-flying-wing-bomber-of-the-1940s.htm#:~:text=The%20YB-49%20proved%20to%20be%20an%20unstable%20bombing,But%20the%20YB-49%20remained%20prone%20to%20yaw%20instability.

      @@rogerc.roberts4705 You are wrong on both counts. See my note below on the plane. Tucker pre-sold cars to dealers that he had not built yet, hoping to move cash around and fund the construction with the pre-sales money. An awful business model, unethical, and there are all sorts of legal ramifications. Think about it. He was selling something that did not exist and arranging photo shoots of the prototypes to make it look like he had a full inventory of cars. Then he would do things like making a ton of Tucker radios and selling them as bolt-in options to get a little extra money as well and keep dealer and consumer interest. That is why you can occasionally find a Tucker radio on eBay. He was breaking laws and he was undercapitalized. The Tucker movie was mildly entertaining, but it was all BS when it came to this part. Tucker suffered the same as Davis, and a whole slew of under-capitalized post-war wannabe car makers.

      @ToyKingWonder 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rogerc.roberts4705 That's nice. Read the Historynet article I supplied you. There are four conspiratorial BS stories that always seem to bob up and down. This one, that Tucker was "ruined" by the "big three" and a crooked senator, that the tire companies stopped mass transit in LA because they wanted to sell more tires on more cars, and that the moon landing is a hoax. What is more believable, that the early flying wings have DOCUMENTED CONTROL ISSUES, or that there was a mass conspiracy to stop the production of this aircraft, when some of the planes cited would not have been cut back in production anyways?! I would acknowledge fierce, and sometimes underhanded competition in both the automobile and aircraft industries, but the flying wings just did not fly well enough, case closed.

      @@TJDOZIER1 That is questionable. Was not too many years ago there were magazine articles featuring "The last" of these original prototypes being restored, put on a trailer, and driven to (Washington?). It was supposed to be put on display and NEVER flown again. But the articles mentioned that that plane had been flown without FAA permission during the restoration.
      I am not trying to cause trouble, now that "another" (?) of the original protypes has crashed and taken the pilot's life I'd like to see the truth come out.
      As I mentioned elsewhere, less then six years ago there were articles covering a protype of a REPRODUCTION of this plane (N9) that "would soon be on the market" and available to the public. (A computer was to be used to help the pilot maintain stability).
      What happened to those aircraft?

    • @TJDOZIER1
      @TJDOZIER1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rogerc.roberts4705 I have not read about any stories like that. The aircraft on display at the NASM is the N1M, a different aircraft than the N9 series. I have never heard of any N9 replicas anywhere. Just Planes of Fames authentic Northrop N9MB.
      I know every pilot who has flown the N9MB since it was restored, not one of them would fly an unsafe aircraft or an aircraft without the proper documentation for flight.
      Some writers may tend to project an image of John Belushi Wild Bill characters in their stories, it's called fluff. Real pilots however are an extremely professional and qualified group of people who want to go home safely to their famies each night like everybody else. If they weren't, I would not have flown with them for over 20 years and counting.

      Needless to say there were MAJOR traffic jams all along the route.
      If someone else remembers that or the related articles maybe it can help determine which protypes is/was which.
