  • Rest In Peace to the Pilot & the Planes of Fame's Northrop N9MB Flying Wing that crashed on 04/22/2019. Thoughts & Prayers go out to the Family, Friends & Staff of the Planes of Fame Museum.
I had shot this footage at the 2018 Planes of Airshow and had not uploaded it but I thought that I should so people can see more footage of this amazing one of a kind aircraft. You can read about the history of the N9M on the Planes of Fames website by clicking on this link. planesoffame.o...

I had the privilege of seeing this beautiful plane fly at the Chino air show in 2014. It is a terrible loss to have lost both the pilot and this historic aircraft. It reminds one that all flying is hazardous, specially these war birds, unique and extreme designs. Rest in peace, Mr. Povat.

+John Osbourn It could be rebuilt if they have the drawings. Flying it again may be unlikely because of rare engines or just out of caution. Terrible loss for the museum and the pilot.

I was lucky enough to see this aircraft fly in the early '90s. I was on a layover at ONT and I always tried to get to Chino and Fla-Bob when I could. One day I showed up at Chino just as they were getting ready to fly it. Was quite a treat. Condolences for the surviving loved ones.

Wish I'd had a chance to see it fly. I knew one of the engineers, Jack Pfarr, back in the 70's. His hobby shop was a safe haven for a bullied little kid. He had pictures of all the wings he helped engineer on the wall of the shop. I was fascinated by them.

How ironic, just saw may he 2 videos yesterday on the crash and tribute on the pilot and this aircraft. I'll be one of those individuals interested on what the NTSB finds and what brought it down. 2nd video (tribute) about the pilot he mentions about being one of a very small group qualified to fly this aircraft and also said that there's more astronauts then pilots for this aircraft. May he rest in peace

+ rory gallegos The NTSB concluded in-flight loss of control for unknown reasons. Witness statements say the plane abruptly rolled right to inverted and then entered a corkscrew dive and a high energy impact. The wreckage was too damaged to determine the specific loss of control.

This sad end illustrates the fact that such a wing had not enough directionnal stability and needed a rudder. That was
the result of the works of a French Test Pilot named Charles FAUVEL,who after his first design in 1929 at the age of 23 deposited his patent for rudder in the middle 30's...His first glider AV 3 flew in 1933,the first powered design being AV 10 of 1935 which
disappeared in 1940 in Cazaux during the nazi invasion of France.
After WWII Charles FAUVEL who ended his military carreer
as a Colonel designed on his own gliders,AV 36,two seater
AV 22,and motor gliders AV 45 and AV 221 .
It is not until fly by wire abd computers that the directionnel stability problem could be solved by a brililant
Northrop Company engineer could be solved, leadind to the
    magnificent B 2 Spirit.
Test Pilot Edwards and his crew lost their live due to this
    directionnal stability problem.
Horten design could do two 360° turns, without any possibility for the Pilot to stop
    the rotation...
Anyhow glory to Charles FAUVEL and John K NORTHROP who paved the way for this very efficient design of airplane.
