And since I have some time on my hands, some history lesson on the languages spoken by those you met in Togo: Ewe (Mina), Ga, German, Yoruba, Twi.
    1. In 1679, the Akwamu empire attacked Accra ( Ga speakers) who fled to Togo and founded the Kingdom of Little Popo (Aneho). The Ga King who fled with his people was called Foli Bebe. The Ga language persisted from those days - even though it was lost to Ewe - and is still spoken in Togo.
    2. The Ewe language spoken in Togo is called Mina. Again, this is because in the 17th Century, people from Elmina in Ghana fled from Asante wars to Aneho and eventually lost their Fanti language and adopted a variant of Ewe (Mina).
    3. The Ewes from Ghana and Togo originally belonged to one group that migrated from Yorubaland - Ille Ife - to Togo; and some to Ghana. Although there are not many similarities between the Ewe and Yoruba language, that association exists.
    4. Togo was under Germany as a colony until Germany's defeat in the First World War, when the territory was taken and divided between the English and the French - French Togoland and British Togoland. British Togoland voted in 1956 to join the Gold Coast to become Ghana. This explains why some Togolese still speak German, as some do in Cameroon (formerly German Cameroon). French, as you know, is from being a colony of France.
    5. Twi is spoken because Togo being a poor country, and many Togolose, having trained as artisans under the Germans, being expert craftsmen, are very sought after in Ghana for masonry and carpentry work. Once in Ghana, they learn to speak Twi, Ga, Hausa etc.

ALEX KUMI Yes. The Germans were very technical and precise. That is why if you want your building tiles laid perfectly, you hire our Ewe brothers from Togo. The German training has been passed down from their grandfathers. To complete apprenticeship in Togo is very difficult because the bosses are very exacting - like the Germans!

I get so happy when I hear Ewe being spoken, it’s so refreshing to hear. Although my family speaks it all the time, the area we live in London it’s mainly Twi and Ga that people speak. But I know that a lot of Ewe’s speak Ga and Twi as well, I know it’s because they moved to the city and picked up and learned the languages. It’s so good that they can speak many languages. Lol but my family have never eaten cat before 🤣Enjoyed watching this.

You make me want to go to Togo (no pun intented) so bad! Last time I was there was in 2016. I miss everything. I was born and raised in France. My mother is Akposso (from the Plateaux Region, east to the Volta Region) and her great grandparents on both sides are Ashanti from Ghana and Fulani from Mali. My father is Ewe. His maternal grandmother was from Ghana and his father had some Finnish ancestry. I was named after my Grandmother, Felicia, by the way 😉 And just like you, I wished I had gotten the chance to learn from her. Togo is a melting pot country and a gem. The country will surprise you. I like the title "Don't judge a book by its cover". If anything is true about Africa and all black people over the world, this is it !!!

Thank you for showing Togo. I'm from Togo, married to a Ghanaian, and planning to move to Ghana within 2 years. There's nothing like home.

Wow! It's amazing how shallow the water is, they looked like giants walking that far out in water that was barely knee deep. Interesting people. Nice content. Thanks for sharing.

Yes! It is very common for them to be multilingual and polyglots. So many Africans speak 4+ languages/dialects. It is beautiful
