  • Hey hi hello! Today I wanted to talk about the false self, and how it can relate to social media. Over the past couple of years, I've been trying to 'dismantle' the false self that I created for myself, and quitting social media was a huge part of that.
    Thanks for watching!
In the video I mention a Therapy in a Nutshell video explaining this topic - but actually it's a school of life one. Here's the link: • The True and the False...

i agree with you, i am not using instagram since some months and i like that feeling. i don't like people who don't really know me seeing things of my life. i honestly think it's only my business and i don't want everyone seeing that. And then i ask myself "why should i post? am i doing out of ego?". why would i want to see things in the lives of others? i don't think it's healthy, we know too much about others and we know little about ourselves. So i'm taking a looong pause from social media (except youtube). Real life is so much fun than fake online life.

"We know too much about others and we know little about ourselves." Such a great way of putting it. Thank you for your comment

Excellent video. What you stated in this video resonated with me strongly. As an ex model and photographer, I came to the same realisations as you before slowly leaving social media earlier this year. It’s been six weeks without Instagram. Being Gen Z and having used the internet as a creative outlet since I was a child, it does feel rather strange being voluntarily disconnected. But social media has become a deeply performative space (although, perhaps always has been?) and presenting a particular version of yourself is a pressure which impacts most of us to some extent. These platforms are built to make us act and think in certain ways, which may lead us to question our own self-perception and our exterior realities (which online - is of course really just a fabrication). Personally I do think influencer culture is reaching it’s final course of action. Most of our generation is realising that the content we are often made to consume is far from authentic, and the nature of content today is becoming rather repetitive and predictable. It interests me to think about what lies ahead. It would make me happy to one day exist at a time where engagement isn’t encouraged as a metric or self-value. For me, keeping up an online identity didn’t leave me feeling fulfilled within, and I’m creating more time to work on myself and my future career as opposed to receiving vacuous validation through likes and followers. I’d love to hear you talk further on this topic!

Thank you for your comment and sharing your own experience. It's been interesting to hear about everyone else's journeys, and how similar they are to mine. I am really curious to see how social media evolves as well - we're definitely in a new phase of awareness of how bad social media can be for your mental health. I'm planning on doing another video about this topic soon, since I'm coming up on my six month anniversary of no social media!!

i can relate to everything you said! do you think you could make a video on the benefits you noticed after quitting? and the process you went through of finding your true self? I feel like my whole personality is based on social media trends and what other people like, idk how to even start trying to figure out who i am

I feel this. And yes!! I realized I'm coming up on the six month mark of no social media, and I think a longer deep dive video on all the benefits I've noticed might be interesting. As for finding your true self, I think that's a constantly evolving journey, but quitting social media has definitely brought a lot of clarity - I'll think about the best way of expanding on that!
Wishing you the best on your self-discovery journey
