- It’s easy to spot the Katskhi pillar-it reaches up into the air like a skyscraper. This natural wonder is a limestone monolith dominating the hilly landscape in a remote part of Georgia. It’s been a site of religious significance going back to Pagan times. At present, the Orthodox Georgian Church maintains a monastery at the breathtaking site.

In Greece there are like 10 monasteries like that at Meteora

Hello! I really enjoyed watching this, but if you would ever want to do a second part to monasteries in the sky, I would HIGHLY recommend visiting Ethiopia which has MANY old orthodox Christian churches places within mountains in which priests and monks live among one another. It’s a very beautiful and spiritual sight.

Yeah that's the first thing I was thinking about when I saw it.
i think the hardest part was carving the stairs into the actual rock face. compared to that, carrying the slabs of rock up the stairs is not much of a big deal lol
like at 0:32 you can see the stairs up there are carved into quite level stairs, directly into the cliff. i guess the pagans who first build it probably used the stone they cut out of the rock face to build their temple.
the new one that was rebuilt in the 40's probably used a pully system, which i think was briefly shown on the side of the cliff at one point, but i don't remember where

Katskhi was the best climbing park in Georgia, we were building the infrastructure for over 10 years and these robbers calling themselves mongs kicked us out and destroy our routes. Bastards

Lisa M. I think the monks how live there maintain it. So they don’t really pay. Wat they do neet in terms of money they probably get from tourists donations.
