- For master miller Maarten Dolman, work is always a grind. Dolman is one of the last remaining millers in the Netherlands. He grinds flour for bread baking as well as special mixes for cookies and cakes. Dolman invites us to take a tour of his windmill. Built in 1732, it’s one of the most famous in Holland.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

FYI, a lot of the old wind mills were used for pumping water out of a polder to keep the water level low and steady
If you see a mill that's just the bottom part there's a chance there will have been a motor under the floorboards at one point with someone getting paid for living there and doing maintenance until like the 70's

Wait hold on, ysselstein isn't in Utrecht but in Limburg, close to Brabant. How did you get his flour? Or was it a local Miller?

This is so strange. I just watched a lot of Videos last week about De Zwaan windmill in Holland, Michigan. What a coincedence. The Swan was the last windmill to be transported out of The Nederlands in 1964.

Omg I've been around there many times!! At 1:15 at the upper left house, there is an ice cream shop and it's great to sit outside and watch the mill while eating! I'm really happy I see another Dutch video, now I must visit the mill as well!
This is not The Netherlands last professional miller. I know Maarten personally, there is also other mills in Netherlands that grind professionally like De Vrijheid in Schiedam. Now there is around 15 mills that grind professionally.
I am a miller myself, I am a “molenaar in opleiding” as they would call it on the Vermeer mill in pella Iowa, USA

He did not say that; he said "tarwe" which is regular wheat. The subtitles were wrong.
We have that in Finland. Try a health food store where you live.
He said 'tarwe' which is wheat. But rye flour is also produced and you can buy it at every flour mill.
In the Netherlands it is used for Frisian or Brabantian rye bread, but even more popular are all sorts of 'ontbijtkoek' available in every supermarket.
Like spelt flour, rye flour needs a little bit of wheat flour mixed in or else bread will crumble apart.

My family are Dutch, and I have spent some time in the Netherlands, where in my experience the country is referred to interchangeably as Holland or Nederland. And no, most people I met there didn't know that I wasn't local (I speak dutch fluently, with a delfts accent). Incidentally, I worked full time for seven years as miller in New Zealand's only working windmill.
This mill lies in IJsselstein near Utrecht which lies in the Netherlands, NOT HOLLAND.

Holland is a specific province within the Netherlands. Any Nederlander you meet will tell you Netherlands is the preferred way to refer to their country
Actually it's not even a province , it's a former county that got split into two provinces, North and South Holland and South Holland is North of Zeeland ( of New Zealand fame)
It depends. As a Hollander I don't give a shit whether foreigners call the country the Netherlands or Holland. If they call it Holland I usually assume they don't know better and let them be. Many people who call the Netherlands Holland can't even point it out on a map, so I don't expect them to know the (cultural) difference between the east and the west anyways.

It should be: Our biggest product is whole-wheat flour. It's made of ground wheat grains.

@Great Big Story change the name to "Netherland's Master Millers" because Holland only represents a small geographical region in the Netherlands. Many Dutch people will be upset over this. Otherwise, great video and keep up the hard work!
