Ethiopia’s Chapel in the Sky

  • If churches were assessed by their risk factor, Abuna Yemata Guh would be our new Sistine Chapel. Perched 650 feet above a steep cliff in Northern Ethiopia, visitors face a 45-minute climb up the cliff’s vertical face in order to access the precariously positioned church. Dating back to the 5th century, history has it that its founder Father Yemata built the chapel to be closer to heavenly spirits; however, others claim it was a strategic move to avoid his enemies.

I am from Ethiopia I want this church twice ones my mum took me there to baptised and second time when i was 25. That is the most blessing i ever had. You must have faith in God to climb there. Now i live in Wakefield (United Kingdom ) in my church people are complaining about 8 step stairs. God bless you all who ever read this.

Our origin story mentions a short stay in Baci from crossing Iria Itune/Red Sea, before fleeing to Shungwaya in Somalia and being pushed by war to Kenyan Coast, from where we split into coastal Northern Bantus and US who went and settled in Mt Kenya. Is there any such history there? Big UP from Kenyan brother from Holy Mt Kenya.

@@AT-jm4dl I would say that both ways are difficult, BUT, there are some locals helping people to climb up and down hills. I was rushing for the schedule so it took me 1.5h in total including the visit in the temple, but the suggested time is 2-2.5h for others.
p.s. I am from a place without tipping culture, which is not the case in Ethiopia. So, the "generous" people just helped you would ask for tips.

Christianity was introduced in Ethiopia by the present regional state of Tigray back in the 4th century. The arc of the Covenant is also believed to be kept in Tigray regional state specifically the place called Axum Zion. Tigray is also the destination of the nine saints, and, someone can also find more than 120 rock-hewn Christian orthodox churches in Tigray and can visit them with great wonder. Christianity expanded from the land of religion to other regions of Ethiopia through the process of time later the consequent centuries after the 4th Century. Tigray is the land of greatness, creativity, and wonder.
