This proves what I was telling my mother the other day, which is that schools intentionally make kids dumb. I saw a documentary once about this guy who was a real hippie and built a house himself from recycled materials and his own whimsical art pieces. He had two children and he didn't put them in school or purposefully homeschool them: they just frolicked around every day as a family out in nature, read together, or made things. When the kids were teens, he got found out and the children were taken away from him (this crushed him and he died before the oldest turned 18 and could come back home). They interviewed his adult daughter, who talked about how horrible and traumatic school was for them, because they were being made to sit still and learn things that didn't pertain to anything they had seen in the real world, and everyone was mean to one another. She got out as soon as she was 18, and her younger brother did the same.
Despite having no structured education, this woman could speak intelligently and maintained her father's house as a shrine to him and his art. I told my mother, okay, if that's how a person with no education except simple discovery of the world can turn out, and you compare her to the idiots coming out of schools today, I can only conclude that today's children are being taught to be stupid, because that woman with no education wasn't as stupid as people with a so-called education today.

Even if your school sucked or your parents were idiots who didn’t care you could and would learn this stuff from merely watching TV! We only had 13 channels to choose from. And the chances were high that some of the programming would be educational. Even if it wasn’t specifically written to be an educational show a lot of common knowledge type of things would be woven into the storylines of TV shows. Plus we had Schoolhouse Rock. Believe it or not those things were wildly successful at teaching kids basic facts such as history, grammar and math. As a kid of the 70s it definitely taught me stuff. Things probably changed from when I was in school but because of Bush’s “no child left behind” policy the schools were passing kids to keep their budget.
My senior year of high school I made a couple hundred bucks helping people cheat to pass the regents. The school knew and kept it quiet. Though one of my favorite history teachers was very pissed at me about it.
