As always ... awesome lesson Jay. I love the sticking rules that you've used in the video. I also like to use Gary Chaffee's stickings assignments for filling in the 16th's between the melody notes. So of course the distance of three 16th notes you would play either a: RLL or LRR depending on which hand is leading and for a Quarter note or four 16th's you could play a paradiddle, similarly the distance of six 16th's notes you could play a double paradiddle or a paradiddle-diddle and so on. The distance of five 16th's and seven 16th's would have their own stickings of course. I would most likely have to write them in ... as it is a work in progress. I also steal, steal, steal like a thief !! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for this excellent lesson Jay ! Personally, I use right hand leading. When I read a melody, I take care of things so that I accent on right hand only. For this purpose, I use diddles. Best regards. Franck
Franck Reidt that’s a good one... especially when you use Ted Reed’s Syncopation for the note source and read in swing time. That’s probably worthy of a lesson in itself.
@@Thedrummersalmanac It works very well with sixteenth too. I find that more easy than Shaffee's sticking and single stroke.Furthermore, it sounds awesome . Fore those reasons I use it all the time for fills. I look forward to see your video about that matter ! 👍😉

I've watched so many videos under the title "drum lesson" that showcase the drummer's great talent but don't actually do a good job at teaching and simplifying things. Soloing is such a different beast compared to just grooving or playing along to music. I know there's a long way between understanding the concepts and applying them, but for drum players who are willing to put in the time and practice, this is hands down the best "method" i've seen to approach soloing. You did a fantastic job at guiding and giving a structure to a subject that can otherwise feel very broad, random, confusing and structureless. Thank you!

As usual Jay ... awesome lesson. I love all the sticking rule variations you used. I also like to use the Linear sticking groups that Chaffee uses. So obviously, the distance between melody notes is assigned a sticking depending on the amount 16h's to be filled. So for four 16th notes a paradiddle could be played, similarity, a distance of six 16th notes could be played as a double paradiddle or a paradiddle-diddle, the same for five and seven 16th's with their assigned stickings. It's a work in progress ... so I always write them out beforehand ..... and I steal, steal, steal like a thief. LOL !! Thanks for the video.
That's awesome Jonh... It's almost like you're using Gary Chaffee's A, B, C and D stickings from his "Sticking Patterns" book, and then applying them as a sticking rule. Very cool and very tough. Definity worth it if you can get it together.

Great video! You covered a lot of bases on this video that will be a great help for any drummer. I came to realize that any drum solo needs three things to make it Sound Good. Hey Sal, I hear ya. "Thumbs down" are just part of the online climate. You can never please everyone, nor should you try. Creators have to remember that when it comes to comments and "likes" ...the internet can't distinguish between the 12-year-old with zero experience or the 50-year old seasoned pro. Everyone's opinion is equal. So you have to take everything with a grain of salt and remember that when it comes to negativity on the internet... empty kettles make the most noise.
... Hi Gianluca, Interesting comment... I'd love to know why you think I can't post a video on drum solos with the drums muted in this way, exactly? Would you care to elaborate? As a teacher, I like to be able to talk and explain over what I am playing. The mutes allow me to do that. Also, a lot of people don't have the means to practice on an acoustic drum set, so mutes like this are a solid option for them.
@@Thedrummersalmanac i think Gianluca was being sarcastic and he means to tell you how great everything sounds and cant wait to hear on a real drum withe mutes off, which would double the enjoyability of viewing and hearing. In a way, your fans would like to hear every solo you ever played on your videos with the mutes off. Thanks for such great free $100K lesson!
Thanks Kevin! well, sub to my channel and check out some of my other vids. I actually recorded that lesson with the pads after my twins were in bed. (they're 3.) The drums woulda woken them up, but I needed to get the lesson done :-) Desperate times, my friend. 😂
I've been playing drums forever, and I loathe drum solos. There's nothing wrong with some timely fills, etc, but the drums are not a solo instrument! I just love a great drumbeat. Leave the solos to melodic instruments like guitar and piano.
1. This a very well conceived and articulated lesson. 2. If you can think musically, you can play musically. Think of yourself as a musician who plays drums. Take what he’s given you here and apply it to the form of a given tune. Play such that anyone hearing you will be able to sing the melody over what you’re playing. You may find your musical awareness enhanced.
It is always funny to me to listen to seasoned drummers talk because they always ASSUME every drummer has a "band leader" or rhey assume every drummer has the same gig as they do. Um, those days are from the big band era and are pretty much long gone. Seldom is there a "band leader" anymore. And the "coasting" idea is nice but that does not mean that what you are playing sounds good. And filling a solo with double or tripple stroke rolls does not impress me either.
E Kap ...thanks for the comment! Just to clarify for you. I am not assuming every drummer has the same gig.lol Of course, every situation is different, but the technique is the same and can be applied to any situation. As far as band leaders only existing in the big band era. I am currently the band leader of an 11 piece club date band and those types of situations are very common these days. If you are in a smaller group like an original project, then you probably don’t have a band leader, but most professional situations still have a music director, which is essentially the same thing. As far as coasting... you said something like “that does not mean what you are playing sounds good...” that is true, but this lesson just demonstrates the technique or the tool... it is not about how to apply it musically and in the right situation. That is more for you to develop on your own and comes with experience. I do have other lessons that talk about that in more detail, if you’re interested. Thanks again, my friend. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out any time.

Ya.... i don't think any band leader is going to look to me for a drum solo
That depends on the situation. 🤷🏻 ...it happens sometimes.
Very instructive but I still can never sound good
Awesome but i dont like electrick sound
Enjoyed the video...I would've liked to hear real drums, instead of silencers & pads!!!
Thanks Kevin! well, sub to my channel and check out some of my other vids. I actually recorded that lesson with the pads after my twins were in bed. (they're 3.) The drums woulda woken them up, but I needed to get the lesson done :-) Desperate times, my friend. 😂
Yes mine suck
hahaha... well. let's work on that 😄
I've been playing drums forever, and I loathe drum solos. There's nothing wrong with some timely fills, etc, but the drums are not a solo instrument!
I just love a great drumbeat. Leave the solos to melodic instruments like guitar and piano.
Perhaps you're not listening to the right drum solos… not all drum solos are equal, so it’s a pretty broad judgment to make.
All drum solos suck.
Well, that’s just not true. Lol
slipknot: am i a joke to you
wow such a good lesson! thank you so much
