*Wuddup y'all. Hope you're all ready to put in some work! This is the first of 4 lessons in this Progressive Subdivision sub series. It's super important that you invest the time into these exercises if you want to amp up your progress and stay ready for the next lesson. So roll up them sleeves and GET'S TO SHEDDIN'!!* 🤓🥁🔥
Thank you my man!! I'm jumpin in finally to Sheddin' this out!!! I'm bout two weeks behind!! I'm a comin though! I'll be ready for the next in the series!! Promise!! Lol! Thank you my man!!!! N i ain't gonna rush it but I'll catch up!! Can't wait greatness as always Rob !👍✌️
My man. Your kick is incredibly defined. Is that something that comes outta the mix or a tuning thing? I'm about to pick up either a super kick or an Emad but I figure why not. Shoot my shot, what are you rocking for a batter and resonant?
It was ironic I just found this video. I was having this conversation with other drummers a few days ago about how I decided to get back down to basics. Kind of go back and re-learn or remember basics I had forgotten over the years. I could solo at the drop of a dime. But after a while I got into that rut of just whomping out as many notes in some cases as I could. More or less showboating it I guess ya could say even. I finally got agitated because out of the blue during a recording session, I had remembered or suddenly reminded myself that sometimes less is more. Thats how my intentions to start over so to speak came into play. I was in a sort of rut with my fills. I just got back into playing after not getting to for over 10 years. So I actually got excited once it dawned on me that some times that KISS needs to apply and just start over and re-work my groove so to speak. So seeing this video got me extra happy about doing that. You Rock!
I really appreciate musicians that understand that composition is a musical skill, that you don't have to fill every song or solo with a blistering array of notes. Technical ability is certainly a necessary skill, but when that's all that's showcased, when subtleties and change-ups are ignored, it makes for less moving and less than memorable performances. Thanks, Mr. Beatdown.
Damn! Didn’t know a solo could sound that good using just 8th notes. You opened my mind. I need to practice this. On a side note, I tried an experiment and I switched the video speed to 2.0x when you’re soloing. It sounds amazing! Try it.
You are great Rob. 4 years ago I finished music school so I kind of lost my drum lessons and my drum teacher. Now I got a new teacher, it's you! Thank you for this awesome and sooooooo useful content!
Never heard a drum solo based on an 8th note subdivision sound so musical. You got that by listening, paying attention and allowing yourself to think and feel music. Many people don't associate that with drums and it's not all their fault. Thanks for teaching drummers how to dispel the myth.
English is not my native, so sorry for mistakes.. Playing for two years now, after 16 year long pause... I'm often falling into loops, like hiting the wall, losing inspiration, not making progress etc. Man, you keep me going, keep me alive and hungry for more. You helped me so much, tnak you for that!
Man i fell in love for your way of teaching. I am addicted to your videos. I learnt those "3 rudiments for 2020". Single stroke Doubles ... Paradidles. Thank u so much for develop this material for Everyone around the globe man. You are amazing bro. God bless you.
Rob, I’m super excited about your series on soloing. I’ve been playing drums for more than 30 years and have done very little live soloing - ‘wipe out’ when I was a teenager, is about it. However, I practice soloing a lot but I haven’t added much structure to it. I play in a couple of bands now that require me to solo, so this could not come at a better time! Thanks, I’m psyched!
Very orchestral! I can go for hours, some days, playing music on the drums. I also usually record my practice and play sessions on cassette, and listen later with a critical ear. What did I like, or discover? What needs more development? Playing eighth notes like this I think of as my "noodling". Gonna be a great year!!!
@@RobBeatdownBrown I agree that there are a lot good drummers online but simply being good at playing does not also make them good at teaching. You on the other hand are always on the point, easy to understand and the information you give out is really useful and applicable.
Love your stuff man--just found you this week--took some of your concepts to band practice last night. It worked on everything from the Ramones to Skynyrd.
That was a great lesson. I've seen so many drummers online give lessons at 100 miles per hour, So to speak. Lol. And you will hear them say the lesson is for bigginer as well as advanced. Well if you can't tell what they are doing because they play so fast and fly threw the lesson. For me its a little to much. I learn so much faster when the lesson is presented at a slower pace. Especially if your new to what they are teaching. So I'd like to give this lesson a 10. Very easy to understand and comprehend. Leaning to play the drums can be very intimidating for some. I was one of those drummers. As my journey to play drums continued threw the years of course things became easier. But still always a challenge when learning or practicing something new. So in concluding these comments. I'd like to say great job on this bigginer drum solo lesson. I think it was presented very well and easy to understand. Super great job. Thanks.. Lance k. H.
Thanks Rob for your time to let us learn about this subject!!! Drumset soloing has always been a weakness and a struggle in my drumming!!!! I assure you that I am going to check all the lessons and be a dedicated student!!!!! Thanks again!!! (JR-PORTUGAL)
Excellent. I'm totally on board and gonna rock this in the morning during my daily morning kit practice time with mics rolling. Gonna be a fun year Rob!
This series landed right on time. I've started a quartet project and I need to learn how to solo asap. Thx man, keep up the good work! Hope we'll meet one day 🤘
That Snare, Though. Thanks, Rob. Although I consider myself a Pocket Drummer, I would like to solo sometimes, even though I don't really know how to. Hahaha. Thanks for your help. Keep doing with you're doing.
Nice to know Weckl isn't the only musical soloist left on earth. Of course I joke, but there are not many melodic, musical soloing drummers on this planet that I can tolerate as far as soloing goes. Rob is a hell of a tasteful drummer and soloer. And that kit sounds perfect. I'd push my mother down for a snare sound like that as well. Hopefully is won't come to that however. Lord knows mom's hips aren't what they used to be. 😝
Dude...your drums and cymbals sound so dang sweet, ...top-O-da line Sigi's and those Yamaha's when mic'd and mixed well...come across so sweetly...tis a pleasure just to hear them...
Awesome instruction Rob! My question is regarding keeping bar structure in mind- do you suggest counting throughout the exercise to keep mindful of the bar?
Indeed Paul, and I think more Dutch drummers should subscribe themselves to Rob's channel. He deserves it since he offers great value to the drummers community!
Hello, i have been trying to solo for years and i am ok at it, however, it always tends to sounds random. I tend to just randomly hit things until my solo time is over. How can i play a more musical/more cohesive/less random solo. I feel like i am just trying to kill time when i solo haha. When I tried this strictly 8th note exercise, the randomness was magnified lol. Please help
Try a simple statement at first, and leave space to think about what you just played. Then, come up with an answer to that, which may be as simple as to add one more note at the end

I think I am going to do this every time I sit down on the kit for 10 minutes. As always, great video!
Just 10?!...😏
Such great advice. I love the vice that playing in simple 1/8 has. So simple and dynamic at the same time.
My favourite was the Cross stick groove🥁, 8th notes never really think about much, but that's just me🤔 Great Lesson Rob Brown.
Rob-You are an excellent communicator/teacher and just an incredible drummer. Thank you!

this is so great !!!! for me part one is harder because the music I play is all tripletes. That makes the 2nd part easier. Thank You so much.
Hyped for this lesson series! Thanks for being amazing!
Space is very important too ! Thanks for your help.
Nice touch Rob! Playing some low volume parts in a song is a great way of adding a change to the song. Love your new intro!
Great idea for the space in between lessons for us to practice.👍👍👍
