Thank you very much! I was setting it in GPS mode first getting up to 14.5 mph. And then switching it to sport mode. Now I see, if you switch it to sport mode first then bring up to max speed (40 mph) and then press the C1 key that will allow you to cruise at maximum speed. Thank you again.
I agree. I did see a shot like this and it was more comfortable and smooth looking. Perhaps when you bank into the turn it feels more natural,, I don't know.
Hi Ed - I am a new Mavic Pro owner in the UK - Just wanted to say "Thanks a million!" - You have saved me time and hassle and I suspect a few embarrassing moments. Really appreciate your postings - Piers
I think it's for fun but its also for a unique cinematic aspect as well. Have you ever watched glider footage, the beautiful arcing turns over places like the Grand Canyon or Hawaiian cliffs? I think that's what fixed wing mode brings to the table.
I get that sentiment but... watching that footage, something about it doesn't feel right. It looks like an arcade jet fighter game, too snappy back to level or something. I've flown so much fixed wing FPV that it's just in my gut now.... That mode on the Mav is just... not graceful. That's the beauty of fixed wings - that dreamy, glidey, "I'm a bird of prey" feel. Whatever, I mean this is the modern age and all. I just think that if all I'd ever known was quads and this "fixed wing mode" thing, I'd have missed out on something really special.
I had the fixed wing mode come up today, now I know what it is. I lived in Southern Pines back in the early 90's Some of your footage brings back memories. Thanks
thanks for showing the process of figuring this out, confusion and all... it adds a sense of reality to the video, not just, "fixed wing mode on, and instantly flying". glad you didn't edit that part out.
With how easy these drones are to fly and the fact that they basically are self-correcting having fixed Wing mode might be a good training tool for learning to fly regular RC planes.
Ed great job in explaining how this works ! I can always count on your videos telling me exactly what I need to know without a lot of fluff ! Kudos my friend !
I hate the word drone, frigging media have turned it into a dirty word. when I'm flying I always say to the public it's an rc model aircraft or helicopter multi rotor. lol its amazing how that seems to De escalate the negative attention.
Absolutely agree. I refused to call my aircraft "drones" for the longest time, till I realized that the only word people understand now is "drone" when referring to an RC aircraft. So, I do dislike the word, but I dislike infinitely greater how anything RC that flies is looked at as somehow vile and awful. I want my hobby back, I want people to understand how beautiful and amazing it is to fly these things.
I agree...though it definitely sucked being around the ‘real’ drones when they were working. They may have been our side but you still had this terrible sense of unease when a drone rocked up and you could hear it but not see it. And then BOOM. From out of the blue. It was terrifying at night and that’s not even being the target...
Yep. I was in a park the other day and someone asked, dirty like "is that a DRONE??" and I said "well, its a quad copter" and they went "oh, OK. Wow that thing is neat!" It's so strange how hot button words change people's attitudes....same device.....but different word for it evokes different feelings.
Thanks (as usual) for the very instructive video! I do wish the controls were configurable so you could make the drone nose down when pushing the stick forward and nose up when pulling back (that's how most RC planes work). Also would prefer to swap the sticks...
I dont get all the negativity around this mode! I can see so many cool situations and shots you can do with following a target, doing dives and panning around. With the tilted look it can look amazing.
It was nice to see you out and about again with the Magic. This fixed-wing mode definitely seems like something for folks who want to experience an R/C plane or have had one in the past. I also agree that this is most certainly for fun and not for shooting video. Unless that video is supposed to mimic video from a plane.
I learned on fixed wings and I have way more experience with them than I do on quads... but... I have to say... quads with minimal babysitting are enormous fun to fly. There's this whole feel to them like the difference between say a regular race car and a drift racer... It's hilarious fun to knock the ass end out and snap into an orbit around an object or into a tight curve. Good fixed wings miss out on that because they are so locked into their path. Both are fantastic fun in FPV, especially in goggles, just very different in flying style. I'll always do both.
I LOVE this feature. Wish I had it on my Air or Inspire 2. Great for shots that emulate natural flight by birds, planes, gliders. So silly that this can't be just added with a software update. But that's how they sell more drones.
So glad I just ran into this video. My Mav Pro arrived today. Didn't have time to fly it yet but tomorrow's a definite. I got the Goggles with it for explicitly this reason! All my life I've wanted to get my SEL but , was always prevented by one thing or another. Now, at 62, I'll at least be able to get the sensation of piloting. I was hoping and praying the craft would react Exactly the way you are describing! I have achieved my wish and have been blessed tremendously! God is good; So Good! :) Thank you so much for this video! LOL :D And Exactly one year ago! :D Timing! :D ktbita! :)
I can relate to how it handles just by watching your video and knowing how R/C planes fly with my many years of experience . Im sure I'll be trying that mode out and enjoying how it handles when I buy mine. I bet you can even crab crawl it if youd like, mixing both cyclics {sticks} can really add a true Plane like feel. Pulling back on the Right stick will just level you out by the looks of it with out worring about stalling . but still Im sure many of us will enjoy this mode even when recording to give viewers a cool effect when flying under and through things. very cool.
Thanks Ed! I Just tried it this morning. I think it's great! It's very agile and controllable. when you use the right stick the banks harder in comparison to the left stick which seems to traditionally set the heading. Love it! It's just like flying a plane. The only thing I wish that was different was that in sport mode it flew faster..😃
I cant believe you actually started making this video without really knowing anything about it. I wont waste any more time watching you figure stuff out.
From what I see in your video, fixed wing refers to a "fixed wing simulation" meaning that instead of flying a drone you are flying an airplane (fixed wing). Going down and up is like a nose-dip and nose-rise and banking when you turn In fact it's pretty cool , it's like a plane cockpit view
I see lots of photographic benefits because I have often tried to mimic fix wing style photography w/o the use of fixed wing mode and it takes very careful and skilled use of the joy sticks. Also, isnt it true that the horizon is always level in normal flight mode? The gimbal always tries to hide attitude changes in the drone. Fixed wing mode is the only way to dispense with that aspect of normal gimbal operation. So I see FWM as a useful tool, not just a toy or gaming mode.
Interesting. I can see some use if you're looking to create that "real flying" feel in your footage whether a dream scene or re-creating a aircraft flight scene. I like it, well for the "right" feel.
Thanks for this video. I do not own a Mavic, but I have a Platinum on order. I also have the DJI Goggles which I've been using with my old P3P. When my Mavic comes in I am going to have a ball with this mode and my goggles!
I actually think you can get some really nice shots in this mode. for instance your first decent toward that tree you were sitting infront of looked great. just looks like a zoom. and if you're going fast and over a river lets say, itd be like an rc plane with a quality cam on. its a good move and a lot of functionality just from a little software update
Thanks for the comprehensive review. From a DP perspective though, I think you're overlooking some of the options for getting good shots in this mode. The descending zoom you get from pitching the craft forward is a really cool look and pretty dramatic if you had a stationary subject. Also, as someone else mentioned, there could be projects where you do want that slight left-right pitch to give more of a sense of flying. I think of the Star wars chase scenes from either ROTJ on those speeders. Obviously nothing extreme where you're holding the pitch too long or off center, but a slight back and forth as it goes around obstacles would be cool. Just my 2 cents.
Hi Carlos, I think you're totally right! Only issue I found was that the movement of the drone was very sensitive and jerky, so a very smooth or controlled and planned motion in Fixed Wing mode would be rather difficult to achieve. But I'm sure with practice you could do it. Thanks for watching!
You cannot slow down in fixed wing mode. Doing so with the right stick disables the fixed wing mode. You can speed up, but not slow down with the right stick and stay in fixed wing mode. It's described in the manual.
Hello Ed, I'm not into drone flying (yet!) but I did notice something and I'm not sure it has been commented: on your first test you were flying at about > 20mph while on your last segment using again the C1 the notice panel was at 19mph. Since you can activate this mode only when flying forward I suspect the fixed wing mode will lock your speed to the the current one. To check this out you may fly normally at maximum forward speed and then switch on the C1: I believe it will maintain that speed. Maybe it's worth a try... ;) Cheers
awesome video Ed, I just found out about this mode and what it does and your video was very helpful! I think it might make for some really really creative shots for my travel vlogs!
Sounds like more of a racing drone mode maybe? Probably for the up coming google release. It seems more like s "video game" version of a fixed wing RC airplane. I get that. Franny Oh, thanks for the review! f
One of my friends tried that actually! It didn't keep up very long though...can't seem to judge distance on such a small object. But it was tracking it left and right for sure!
I to was wondering what fixed wing mode was for but since I just got the Mavic was not going to try anything until I seen how it worked so thanks. I would like to see some great videos shot in this mode
Heyas Ed! I just updated to the latest firmware yesterday, so other than a quick little test flight, fixed wing seems to act kinda like "FPV Mode" in the camera settings. Only difference is you do not have to maintain a specific speed and with the camera in fpv mode you still have full default controls of the craft. I find fixed wing mode a little odd unless they plan on incorporating the FPV goggles soon. However prior to the fixed wing update I have been using litchi and my VR goggles to fly my Mavic in FPV mode anyway..It does look exactly like "Fixed Wing" On another note.... As always your footage from the Mavic looks stellar even when you are not even showcasing the footage, dang how do you do it! Looks like you have been doing awesome with your channel!
This is something pro cine-photographers has been waiting for in a (semi) prosumer drone - Awesome!! Learn how to flight your toy manually and this mode will get you some true pro shots ;)
Fixed wing is a term for AIRPLANES. Rotary is a helicopter. This is simulating a fixed wing aircraft flying through the air. I love it as I am a traditional RC pilot getting in to copters.
I see your mounting an iPad mini to your controller. how are you doing that? can you do a video on how you are accomplishing this? How are you attaching the iPad mount securely to the controller?
In a real plane (fixed wing) the left stick would be throttle and rudder (yaw) and the right would be left/right and up/down. Can you yaw (craw sideways) like a fixed wing?
In a real plane there is only one stick, pedals and throttle lever. :) But yes, a RC plane controller in Mode 2, which I use, the sticks are as you explain. But with the Mavic you can set other stick modes, and custom too. I wonder if Ed uses mode 1 as the sticks are swapped.
I am guessing that when you bring the right stick back and slow the MP down beyond a certain speed it drops out of FW mode. Haven't yet tried it myself so thanks for sharing
That is soo great! Put your DJI googles on, sit in your lawn chair and play like you are in the captain's seat ! Sam's club has the best price for the DJI Mavic Pro for about $ 968. I bet when Christmas rolls around the prices are going to really drop!
Cool, I've never flown any fixed wing...so I'm sure it would be really weird for me! Lol BTW I just uploaded Arkansas Rice Planting video! Check it out if you get a minute.
Seems like you missed the whole point. Getting footage like what you would get flying a fixed wing plane gives you an awesome point of view. I can see all kinds of applications for this.
Perhaps, although they change the wording on the app so many times that it's difficult to make a video that stays up-to-date for more than a few weeks it seems.
Ed.. Great video as your others. Quick question...if I have my C1 & C2 buttons programmed to other uses and I'm flying in "fixed wing mode" does the C1 & C2 buttons automatically switch to on/off in fixed wing mode? When I start flying my GREAT Mavic again will the C1 &C2 buttons revert to my original settings? Keep up the good work on your videos.
Sorry, just found your link for the holder. But does the phone or tablet have to be cellular? Or can you use the standard iPad Mini or iPod Touch? The link to holder for others that need it: www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5REA8B/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&tag=edri-20&linkId=9fa808a9385a9c4fc4737605d1c42214
Hey Todd, thanks for finding that link :) No, you don't need cellular for your devices, but I've found that the Cellular iPad 16GB Gold is cheaper than the WiFi version on Amazon. I still just hotspot it with my phone though.
Hello Ed. Thanks for the video. Does C1 and C2 in fixed wing mode interfere with C1 and C2 when you customized in your settings? Have you try RTH when flying Fixed wing? I am guessing that RTH will disable fixed wing when activated. Thanks
Hey Edixon, customizing C1 and C2 doesn't matter. When you turn Fixed Wing Mode on, they automatically map to turning on and off the mode and cannot be reassigned to anything else while the mode is active. Not sure about RTH, but I do know that the process of RTH stops the craft to orient itself. That would deactivate the Fixed Wing mode anyway.
Ed, now that you've been using both Phantom 4 pro and The Mavic Pro, what are you using more or reaching out for more? Given capabilities, features, controller, etc. Any Preferences?
I've been looking for a way to attach a good 3-axis gimbal to an electric glider or fixed wing RC aircraft to provide stable, high quality FPV video. I just haven't found a gimbal that will attach easily. It appears DJI just provided the perfect solution with a software/firmware upgrade for the Mavic. Fixed Wing Mode is for the stabilized HD and UHD footage we can't currently get from a racing drone. We are going to start seeing some amazing footage from low level flying with the Mavic. A higher altitude test like yours would not yield the kind of result this feature is meant for. Do you know if the Fixed Wing Mode is available for the P4 and the P4P?
Hello when you hit see one does your Mavic go right into the fixed wing mode or do you have to push a little airplane icon on the screen for mine I have to always push the icon?
If I understand correctly, the only way to get a downward shot in Fixed Wing Mode is the point the nose downward? I do agree, cinematically speaking, not terribly attractive unless doing a VERY specialized type of video or shot.
Yes, and pointing the nose down will descend, so you can't get a downward shot for long! But it's definitely an interesting feeling with the controllers
Seems like it. Will be flying my Mavic later today (yard work first.. grunt..) and might give it a try. Thanks for all of the great videos. Liked and Subscribed!
it seems like the drift mode in arducopter or APM flight controllers. VIDEO LINK: th-cam.com/video/0mdk2-sNXmg/w-d-xo.html Drift Mode allows the user to fly a multi-copter as if it were a plane with built in automatic coordinated turns. The user has direct control of Yaw and Pitch, but Roll is controlled by the autopilot. This allows the copter to be controlled very intuitively with a single control stick if using a Mode 2 transmitter The user has completely manual control over the throttle as in Stabilize mode. Drift Mode is available as of release 3.1 of the Copter firmware. How Drift Mode works You “fly” the MultiCopter with the right stick (on Mode 2 controllers) controls Pitch and Yaw. You use the left stick primarily for altitude control but not for yaw directly. When you push the right stick forward or back the copter will pitch (and accelerate) in the appropriate direction. When you push the right stick towards one side or the other the right or to the left the copter will turn in the direction specified. The copter will also bank at the same time so as to make a coordinated turn in that direction. When turning with the right stick yaw is automatically applied and sufficient roll is added to cancel the copters velocity in the roll axis. This allows you to maintain a coordinated (non-skidding) turn. Letting go of the sticks effectively turns on a speed brake in the Pitch axis that slows the copter to a stop over a two second period. A copter in Drift Mode with the right stick in the center will loosely hold horizontal position (It will slowly drift in the wind.) Pilot’s throttle input controls the average motor speed meaning that constant adjustment of the throttle is required to maintain altitude. If the pilot puts the throttle completely down the motors will go to their minimum rate (MOT_SPIN_ARMED) and if the vehicle is flying it will lose attitude control and tumble. Drift Mode relies on your GPS for control. If you lose your GPS signal in flight while in Drift Mode, your copter will either land or enter altitude hold based on your failsafe_gps_enabled setting. You should also be prepared to switch back to Stabilize Mode for manual recovery if necessary.
Ed, thanks for the great content!! Just curious as to what color mode you record with...I too noticed the change up with the latest firmware update. Also, do you film in a color mode when knowing you'll be doing a lot of post production? Thanks again, man!!
This mode looks like it is essentially cruise control for drones, so when you go on the brakes it takes it out of it but otherwise keeps the drone going ... does that seem right?
which color profile did you settle on for this clip? :) you were saying they changed the names again and then yu didnt mention which one you chose, and the colors are great!
Is there any way to control pitch with the right stick forward and back? This is like mode 2 in RC. Pitch on the left stick is like the much hated (by me) mode 1.
Hey Pablo, sometimes it is. I actually found that inserting the iPad into the controller arms was slowly damaging the screen protector on the iPad and scuffing things up, plus Sport Mode was difficult to activate. Using the tablet holder is much better in those respects, but it's also another thing to carry and doesn't really fit that well into the Fly More Combo bag. Of course if you're using an iPad, you're probably using a larger bag anyway to carry it along with the Mavic, so perhaps that's not a big deal.
Thanks Ed. Actually I've been watching your videos but haven't bought my Mavic yet. Looking forward to doing it though, in my next trip to Boston in June. Greetings from Argentina!

Thanks a lot Ed I wouldnt even had known about this mode if it wasn't for this video, thank you
Very cool information and option for any of us that fly RC planes , loving this mavic.
The gimbal still needs some work when diving and ascending. Hopefully they will fix this in a future firmware update.
Speaking as a pilot, I much prefer fixed wing mode, it makes more sense to my brain.

It's the same as wing mode but they fixed it = Fixed Wing Mode
I guess you can use it as a POV shot for a film sequence as you would if in a plane.

Thanks a lot Ed. It helped me a lot. You know, I am a beginner, and I was wondering what Fixed Wing mode is. Thanks.
Maybe it's worth a try... ;)
Cheers
Yes I believe you're right. That's what it seemed to be doing. Thanks for your input!
awesome video Ed, I just found out about this mode and what it does and your video was very helpful! I think it might make for some really really creative shots for my travel vlogs!
Ed admire your videos, have subscribed and appreciate the style of your video, informative, clear and precise narration and editing is superb.
Sounds like more of a racing drone mode maybe? Probably for the up coming google release. It seems more like s "video game" version of a fixed wing RC airplane. I get that. Franny Oh, thanks for the review! f
I think you're right, definitely would look great with FPV goggles. What's the new Google release you're speaking about?
Ed Ricker Vlogs Probably talking about the DJI goggles that theoretically may actually be released someday.
Ever try having your P4P on follow mode, following your Mavic in air to get a cool shot? I'm sure that'd be some work alone.
One of my friends tried that actually! It didn't keep up very long though...can't seem to judge distance on such a small object. But it was tracking it left and right for sure!
go to 40 mph in sport mode then hit c1
N'th DEGREE AERIAL PERSPECTIVES whats it do
Thanks Ed for a very good video cleared up of a lot of questions thanks again
Thanx man I didn’t know what that icon was at first.
However prior to the fixed wing update I have been using litchi and my VR goggles to fly my Mavic in FPV mode anyway..It does look exactly like "Fixed Wing"
On another note.... As always your footage from the Mavic looks stellar even when you are not even showcasing the footage, dang how do you do it! Looks like you have been doing awesome with your channel!
is that a teal-orange color profile? cool
Hey Rick! You should check out d-Log mode again, they made some big updates to it.
Thanks! I'll check it out
This is something pro cine-photographers has been waiting for in a (semi) prosumer drone - Awesome!!
Cool! So thaaaat's what it's all about :)
I wonder if there'll ever be an update to add this to my P3P
Can Ed or anyone else confirm; is he in mode 1? As if hes running mode 2 this is pretty backwards
Took me a while to get used to it, but I really enjoy the fixed wing mode. Have you found it enjoyable Ed?
Great. You explained it well saved me trying it out.
Hoping they make the banking more adjustable for tighter turns.
Do you mind sharing your color profile? Amazing.
Thanks for the video!! Can you bank with one stick while pitching down with the other?
Thanks for watching, Jay! Yes you can, definitely feels a bit odd at first but you can
Cool, I've never flown any fixed wing...so I'm sure it would be really weird for me! Lol BTW I just uploaded Arkansas Rice Planting video! Check it out if you get a minute.
Cool video Jay, love how to the tractor looks at night with the lights. Thanks for sharing!
Seems like you missed the whole point. Getting footage like what you would get flying a fixed wing plane gives you an awesome point of view. I can see all kinds of applications for this.
Great video! Will you be doing a follow up video with the new color names?
Perhaps, although they change the wording on the app so many times that it's difficult to make a video that stays up-to-date for more than a few weeks it seems.
I understand thank you for the response. Love your videos !!
Thank you. I have been waiting for someones explanation before I tried it. #thefearoflosingyourdrone
Interesting flight mode. Do you see any real-world application?
Awesome review, and mode. Cheers 👍
wow realy great feature! I will love it.
thx for your explaining
Thanks for the info! Really helpful!
I bet you could do a really good christopher walken impersonation. great video
cant wait for the DJI googles! fixed wing mode
Thanks for taking us for a tour of this new mode. What adaptor are you using to hold your iPad Mini to the controller? Thanks!
Thanks! I use this one: amzn.to/2rxiBK1
Thanks!
Have you done a video on one of these yet or do you plan to?
Yes: th-cam.com/video/USlo4lPYxck/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the great video! I noticed you had an iPad Mini attached. How was it connected to the controller? Is a cellular version required? Thanks
Sorry, just found your link for the holder. But does the phone or tablet have to be cellular? Or can you use the standard iPad Mini or iPod Touch? The link to holder for others that need it:
www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5REA8B/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&tag=edri-20&linkId=9fa808a9385a9c4fc4737605d1c42214
Hey Todd, thanks for finding that link :)
No, you don't need cellular for your devices, but I've found that the Cellular iPad 16GB Gold is cheaper than the WiFi version on Amazon. I still just hotspot it with my phone though.
Are you able to switch up the controls in FW mode? So that left thumb is speed and right thumb is roll and pitch?
Here's the video, Claudio! th-cam.com/video/GDvNXIg2SCg/w-d-xo.html
Hey Ron, I agree! Unfortunately no, there is no Fixed Wing Mode for the Phantom drones currently :(
Hello when you hit see one does your Mavic go right into the fixed wing mode or do you have to push a little airplane icon on the screen for mine I have to always push the icon?
Interesting, I think it creates more dynamic and immersive footage.
VIDEO LINK: th-cam.com/video/0mdk2-sNXmg/w-d-xo.html
Drift Mode allows the user to fly a multi-copter as if it were a plane with built in automatic coordinated turns.
The user has direct control of Yaw and Pitch, but Roll is controlled by the autopilot. This allows the copter to be controlled very intuitively with a single control stick if using a Mode 2 transmitter
The user has completely manual control over the throttle as in Stabilize mode.
Drift Mode is available as of release 3.1 of the Copter firmware.
How Drift Mode works
You “fly” the MultiCopter with the right stick (on Mode 2 controllers) controls Pitch and Yaw.
A copter in Drift Mode with the right stick in the center will loosely hold horizontal position (It will slowly drift in the wind.)
Pilot’s throttle input controls the average motor speed meaning that constant adjustment of the throttle is required to maintain altitude.
This mode will be sweet while used with the new DJI Goggles!
Ed, thanks for the great content!! Just curious as to what color mode you record with...I too noticed the change up with the latest firmware update. Also, do you film in a color mode when knowing you'll be doing a lot of post production? Thanks again, man!!
I've been using AgateG or B up until now, but haven't really given the new color names a run through yet. I used Filmic in this video I believe.
I think I used Filmic, but honestly I wasn't really a fan of what I had chosen for this video...I guess that's personal taste! Thanks for watching!
Can you use fixed wing mode while doing a waypoint mission?
What kind of a range do you get with the mavic pro? Does it turn "home" when it looses commands?
i like that sunglasses. what model is it? lol
nice video ! informative.!
Thanks! They're the Ray-Ban Wayfarer Classic. www.ray-ban.com/usa/sunglasses/RB2140%20UNISEX%20093-original%20wayfarer%20classic-black/805289126591?category_Id=332608
Is there any way to control pitch with the right stick forward and back? This is like mode 2 in RC. Pitch on the left stick is like the much hated (by me) mode 1.
Yes you can switch the Modes. The GO App has the ability to switch to Mode 1.
If one wanted to create the cockpit eye view for video, I'm guessing that's what this mode is for.
Hey. I have a request to you, can you give a link to the tablet support that you use to fly to Mavic?
Sure, here you go! amzn.to/2piNAbd
Thank you so much!
What filters do you use while doing the montage? Btw your footage is sooo good :)
Thanks! I use PolarPro ND/PL filters.
I’ve had my mavic pro for a couple of years and I didn’t know about this feature
Hi Ed. is it better for you to use the iPad holder instead of using it attached to the controller? thanks!
Ed Ricker Vlogs which tablet holder are you using? Still happy with it?
