I searched quite a number of videos but this one showed me not only how to make the adjustments but also the steps to take before you take the next step. Procedure is half the battle and to understand that allows you to complete the process. Thanks so much!!!
@@BikeFixIT can u guys help me when I shift the tension gear from 3 to 2 the drive chain jump off and gets stuck around the front derailer part for now I have to leave it on gear tension 3 but I'd like to switch to 2 when my legs get tired
I have watched a lot of videos on how to adjust the chain/shift and they were all difficult to follow. You have a real skill at making something that nobody else can explain simply, easy for a total beginner to understand! Thanks!
This is best video I've seen yet on rear derailleur adjustment. I like your trick of getting the high limit adjusted by slowly moving the screw until it drops into the highest gear. Thanks!
the best video on how to adjust the derailleur on TH-cam. Why - because he explains everything simply and teaches you what the adjustments do. Thanks a bunch !
Amazing! It worked! I've been putting up with jumpy clicky gears for a few weeks now and I've been dreading having to fork out the money for parts replacement/servicing. This video came to my rescue. I just came back from my test ride and I had forgotten how smooth and enjoyable cycling was supposed to be. Hooray!
Honestly how does anyone give this a “thumbs down”?! Idiots. This guy is taking time out of his day to clearly and simply share some good maintenance tips.
A superb tutorial! I watched it twice in a row, plus a lot of partial rewinds, then went out and put my bike on the stand, came in a few times to review the material again as I went through the adjustments, and now I have all nine gears on my rear cassette available again, and smooth shifting too! 'Bout time I finally learn this! Thanks!
I really appreciate how you explain and show every single detail and the logic behind it. Makes it so much easier to understand. So many youtubers tell, but don‘t show.
Thanks for your feedback! I do think it is good for everyone to make simple adjustments on the bike, but we must also remember to support the local bike shops. A tune-up that adjusts all the bikes bearings every couple years will keep it running much longer.
Thank you so much for your video! I bought a new bike from the store, but the gears didn't shift right. Your video helped me to tune up my rear derailleur. My bike now rides better than when I got it from the store! Thanks for taking the time to make your video. I appreciate it very very much. Thanks again!
I have been trying to change my rear mech (first time) and have seen several videos on youtube, your video by far is the most accurate and most informative, thank you and well done!

By the end it was even worse and I was getting ready for an anxiety filled night of sleep until I found your video. After watching, I had it all fixed perfectly. Thanks so much man
Of all the rear derailleur adjustment (TH-cam) videos I've run across, yours is definitely one of the best; short, concise and the 'shifting to the lowest gear' trick in order to create slack in the cable prior to the high-limit adjustment? Nice time saver!
I don't usually comment on YT vids but needed to log in to thank you, this is by far the easiest vid to follow concerning gear indexing , you explain and show how to do it so well unlike most other videos , Now i can tune up my gears to perfection something which i wouldn't and couldn't do before, again I Thank You :)

This is probably one of the best derailleur adjustment videos I have seen. Thank you so much. Question: In the background; is that a Warner ladder? How are you using that as a repair stand?
Thanks for showing the right procedure for setting the H limit screw, I hadn't heard of disconnecting the cable before. Should help me a lot next time I'm working on a bike's shifting.
No problem! Pretty good little trick to help ensure wire tension is not holding up the der instead of sitting on the limit screw. Sometimes it helps to just lean over and look to see if the der is resting on the set screw as well.
Stretching a cable like this runs the risk of putting small kinks in it. Stretching is only required when installing new cables. Connect the cable and use the shifter to do the stretching - it's easier. Then do the adjustments. Your explanations are very clear, you do good work!
Great video, I think this will help me out with my wives bike! Thank you. hers is over shifting to the lower(easier gears) my bike is stumping me, my bike is a 20 year old decent quality mountain bike. other than basic cleaning not much maintenance has been done to it. It recently started to shift on its own when I would stand up on a hill and pedal, and now its just shifting on its own all the time. I also feel like all of a sudden there is a ton of rubbing and friction going on someplace. up till now my bike has always been super smooth and perfect shifting. any suggestions ??
It could be your chain is stretched. As the chain wears the rollers wear down the teeth of the cassette. Once the teeth get to worn, when pressure is applied the chain will slip or "skip". Many people think its ghost shifting when its actually slipping. If it is worn, you will need a new chain, cassette, and possibly crank/front chainrings. cyclingtips.com.au/2009/03/how-to-check-for-chain-wear/

Thanks for the video. I've used these instructions many times over the years (never can remember all phases without it). Now I build a new road bike and once again revisited your instructions. I see that you've hit million hits, so that's quite many bikers helped with rear derailleurs. Thanks again! :)
Ty for making this. I just replaced my fleewheel , and my derailleur gear started binding on my lowest 2 gears (25T and 30T). Your explanation 7:45 helped tremendously.
Dude, this by far, the best video on sorting your gears out. Easy to understand, clearly explained at a good speed, thorough, simply brilliant. Thanks a million. My gears were a mess, now 95% there. Think I may have a slightly bent rear mech
OMG!!! I am an idiot. I was confused because i was making the adjustments in gear 1 (easiest) instead of Gear 8 (the hardest)!!! Once I made that major correction and followed the rest of your instructions, I adjusted the rear derailure superbly! AWESOME VID MAN! I knew I was missing something! I've been trying to get it right since last night lol
Milad Karimi I don't trust bicycle shops anymore (atleast not the ones where I live). They'll provide blanket solutions such as replacing an entire wheel for problems they don't know how to solve, or worse, they'll try to fix it and make it even worse because they don't want to admit they don't know the solution. Sometimes when I go to get a problem fixed, 2 new pop up. In fact, my gears became misaligned after I gave my cycle to a cycle shop to get my punctured back tire replaced. I'd rather just fix it myself than deal with all of that hassle.
The other videos I have watched on this topic doesn't show releasing the cable to make the initial adjustments. Your instructions worked great. Thanks so much
After hi lo travel is done. I usually adjust top pulley of derailer to closest to cog without touching. My older dura Ace allows for this. Keeping shifts fast and crispy. Great video thanks
Since long the gears on my bicycle were not responding and i was not able to get them adjusted even after a visit to the bicycle shop. This video is a boon in disguise and helped me to adjust the gears. Thanks a ton.
Thanks! Got new a new bike. Didn't seem to go up from 6 to 3 properly. Now everything runs smoothly. Great vid! Especially the green arrows! Helped a lot.
Simple and clear, and moreover works. I have adjusted my shift following all the tips and tricks for adjustment. The most difficult issue was to find a good hanger to keep the bike up and above the floor !!!
Dude you don't know how much you helped me. I tried for DAYS bro... I've even TH-camd so many videos about this and you helped me. Thank you, thank God and God bless you. Also, can you please help me with my front derailleur now? Thank you.
Great vid. Many thanks - really easy to understand. Couple of questions. When you were making these adjustments, which cog was chain running on the crank/pedal gear set? Also at the end of the film, how were you making the play happen in the derallier when setting the low limit screw?
woodbine66 Thanks! 1.small front ring for adjusting the easy gears in back, big front ring for the hard gears in back. 2. The play is caused by pushing on the shift lever (in the same direction you would shift to an easier gear) or by pulling on the exposed cable.
Thank You Very much Sir. I didn't know how to adjust the gears and been struggling for about 4 months with my bikes gears. I was ready to sell it after getting tired of it and then I saw your video. Thank you it really helped me.
I like this video. You Tube is full loaded with hardcore bicycle fan videos which are not educating because main purpose is to show own skills not to help other people.
This video is thorough and easy to follow. The only thing that caused me difficulty was in thinking of the smallest cog as first gear on the shifter. Once I realized it was, in fact, seventh gear, I was golden! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!
im 10 yrs old and thanks you very very after a very long time i got my gear repaired and even spending money more i didnt it get it corrected and thank you man. now i got it corrected because of you man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have used both your videos on the front and rear derailleurs to get my road bike riding smooth. Your videos are spot on and very informative. Thanks for your time and effort to help others!
Thank you for this video dude, I'll be able to fix my bike tomorrow afternoon.. Then im on a mission to get working brakes haha After that I can start riding again :)
Hi, I just wanted to say thanks and verify that this is one of the better tutorials out there and this does work. My gears were right screwed, as well as the limit screws. I followed your instructions and now I'm shifting smooth and silky. I can't believe the bike shop wanted 50$ +tax which is 13% here in Canada. But at least I can go out and cause myself serious bodily harm and walk into any hospital I choose and they will fix me for free. Also our economy isn't about to crash. Go USA. Peace
Excellent video...one of the few where the camera is adjusted directly above the derailleurs to help the viewer understand the adjustments in micro detail. Most videos gloss over these adjustments either assuming that they are obvious or the creator tries to get some facetime instead of delivering clearer instructions.
Hi, am having issues with my lower gear, like when i'm going up hill it will keep changing itself and the shift make some cracking. Sometime I notice that the chain is in between two cassettes so I have no clue how to solve the pb.
Thanks for this great video tutorial... The gears on my new bike were slipping every now and then.... But I followed your instructions and now the gears shift on perfect precision... Thanks! Keep up the good work...
Awesome Awesome Awesome video. Literally the best explanation of gear adjustment I've gotten to date. You explain sooooo well and in proper detail. You're a true professor. I would give anything to be trained in bike mechanics by a teacher like you!
Glad it helped! the front der. is essentially the same thing, the limit screws controls how far up and down the crank it can move, while the wire tension controls how much it moves with each click.
I've watched about 10 different videos and this is the definitive version out there. I've adjusted something and now it won't shift to the smallest front chainring. The shifters for the small chainring do absolutely nothing now. Can you or anyone help? Thanks
skillionaire Thanks for watching. I do also have a video for front shifting, but it sounds to me like it could be 3 possible causes. 1. the wire is stuck/corroded/not moving freely throwing everything off. 2. the low limit is screwed too far in, and like a "book end" is preventing the chain from falling down. 3. the wire is too tight, holding tension and preventing the chain from falling down.
BikeFixIT Thanks for you knowledge. I took a punt just before your reply and loosened the low limit screw and it worked. It wasn't perfect so I ended up unscrewing the tension bolt to the front derailleur to see if I could get more tension. No difference so I screwed it back in. Now the it's stuck on the small chainring and won't shift to the big one. I have internal cabling (probably no difference to external). This is driving me nuts! Hope you can help? Thanks again
cheers man, a video that is well explained without going into the entire history of the derailleur. finally got mine sorted after about 5 hours of getting frustrated with average tutorials. now to do the front...haha.

Simple and clear, and moreover works. I have adjusted my shift following all the tips and tricks for adjustment. The most difficult issue was to find a good hanger to keep the bike up and above the floor !!!
+Raul Gutierrez A nice bike stand can make repairs sooo much easier to tackle
Thanks so much dude I was able to fix my rear derailleur make more vids like dis dude
Best explaination that I have seen for adjustment of rear derailleur!, Very simple and easy to understand for a novice bike repair person, thank you
+Dale Wiens Thanks for watching!
Awesome video, very well done. Thank you!
Tobiasz Karoń Thanks!
Thanks!
This video is thorough and easy to follow. The only thing that caused me difficulty was in thinking of the smallest cog as first gear on the shifter. Once I realized it was, in fact, seventh gear, I was golden! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!
Samantha O'Dell Glad I could help!
Excellent video! Very informative.
im 10 yrs old and thanks you very very after a very long time i got my gear repaired and even spending money more i didnt it get it corrected and thank you man. now i got it corrected because of you man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job! Don't give up and almost anything is possible.
tnx man! help me ! but i was littel bit stock with the 3rd Screw of the derailleur... donno if it was to in or out...
The derailleur cog shouldn't touch the big cassette cog. So, unthread the screw as far as possible without the two cogs touching.
I have used both your videos on the front and rear derailleurs to get my road bike riding smooth. Your videos are spot on and very informative. Thanks for your time and effort to help others!
Glad you like them!
Might be time to update with some 4k videos
Thank you for this video dude, I'll be able to fix my bike tomorrow afternoon.. Then im on a mission to get working brakes haha
After that I can start riding again :)
Thanks for watching and best of luck!
Go USA. Peace
Perfect just the video I was hoping for
Glad I could help!
Indexing your derailleur
Thanks for this great video tutorial... The gears on my new bike were slipping every now and then.... But I followed your instructions and now the gears shift on perfect precision... Thanks! Keep up the good work...
Thanks for watching! Glad I could help out. Always amazes me how many people find this video helpful
There is a problem with my brakes for my Mountain Bike, my third gear keeps slipping and idk how to fix it. Help Please?
There are many videos and methods presented, by far this is the better of many, from an aducator.
Thanks!
Thanks, that was a very awesome video :D
I've watched all these videos about derailleur adjustment... and this one is the best!
Very useful video !
Awesome Awesome Awesome video. Literally the best explanation of gear adjustment I've gotten to date. You explain sooooo well and in proper detail. You're a true professor. I would give anything to be trained in bike mechanics by a teacher like you!
this is a damn good "how to" video!
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks again
skillionaire Not going up would mean the wire is too loose, or possibly the high limit is threaded in waaaaay too far.
cheers man, a video that is well explained without going into the entire history of the derailleur. finally got mine sorted after about 5 hours of getting frustrated with average tutorials. now to do the front...haha.
I have savedf £s just watching your tutorial. You describe how to adjust the gears perfectly 10/10. Thanks 👍
Absolutely awesome! Step by step, from the first thing to start with, to the end! Well done
Thanks a ton!
Great tutorial. Thanks
