I worked on my bike for 6 hours and couldn’t figure this problem out. Not one other video I watched showed me the solution in a detailed, systamatic way. Thank you so much for this amazing video, it solved all my problems.
Thank you for helping me sir because my rd isnt working properly and i am at 8th gear and whenever i pedal hard it will do a change gear thing for no reason but watching this video made my tourney good and fine so thanks you so much ‼️!!❤️
You can take this info and apply it to any derailleur, provided you can identify 'high' and 'low' limit screws you're good to go! This is a brillant no fuss instruction and I'm grateful to the presenter!
Tell ya Bud: This is the absolute best derailleur adjustment vid on the tube. Just bought a new Aventon Soltera 7 E-bike with the Shimano Tourney system and would not go into 7th gear no matter what I did. Mostly because I had no idea what I was doing and very frustrated. Following your steps 1 by 1, it now works flawlessly. Can't thank you enough. Next up, you should do a simple chain cleaning and lubrication vid. Thanks again Sir.
Derailleurs were always such a mystery to me. I needed to index mine and a simple barrel adjustment took care of it. This really helped with my Tourney.
Finally I learned how to set the limits on my Tourney derailure. Annoyingly the limit screws on the Tourney aren’t labeled. Since I don’t have a bike repair stand I use my trunk mounted bike rack instead. Works well.
Totally concise and perfect instructions.....Thank you! FYI-I don't have a bike stand, so working in the garage, I have a wooden beam, took a screw hook and put it into the beam. Then took a small bungee cord and strapped the front wheel to the frame, so it doesn't spin. Then took a ratchet strap with one end in the hook, and the strap was wrapped through the rear rack. Finally, it was just a matter of ratcheting the strap until I got the rear wheel off the ground to make the derailleur adjustments. Of course a repair stand would be steadier, but I only do minor stuff to the bike, and this worked out perfectly.
I concur! This is about the 10th video on this matter I've watched. And this one being the only that helped me, the 5th gear barrel adjustment specifically 👍👍
My bike's gear wasn't properly tuned when I bought it a few years ago. Sometimes the first gear refuses to engage. Your video gave me confidence to tune it myself. My gear now shifts smoothly from the lowest to the highest without fail each time. Thank you!
You sir deserve a big applause. I watch the video from park tools and I was like wtf are you talking about. After struggling for 2 hours today in adjusting it I took a ride to test and it was messed up. I called a bike shop got quoted 15 bucks but then I did another search and ran across your video and I have to say it's golden. You explained everything in a way that's it's easy to understand and without alot of extra mumbo jumbo. I took another shot at it and I think I got it right. If not I'll take another shot at it when I get my bike stand. Your video was key to my success. So I thank you very much. 👍👍👍👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🤝🤝🤝
Excellent video....totally helped me. We bought a Lectric 2.0 bike for my wife recently and it had a Shimano Tourney derailleur. The Lectric website said to watch their 'all inclusive' video on how to set it. Guess what? The only part that matched was turning the barrel adjuster to index the gears. I spent the better part of this afternoon guessing at the high and low adjusters cause they didn't match the video. You saved me a lot of grief my friend and thanks for the clear and concise video with excellent lighting and vocalization. I've watched enough poorly lit videos with bad sound to appreciate yours to the 'nth' degree. Appreciate the work you put into it. Dean
I must say that your step by step and explanation imo is the best how to video for this part that I have found on TH-cam. it was easy to understand, you did an excellent job describing it as well as showing the whole procedure. I now finally get it.
Thanks for your Video Tutorial, I was Able to Adjust my Mountain Bike, took me just 1 hr to make it run smoothly, I was about to giving up on adjusting my Deraillleur, and ended up fixing it👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Amazing. My kid’s bike wouldn’t shift into either the highest or lowest gear and we didn’t have time to get it in to a shop before his bike camp next week. This saved us! I was able to get it shifting fully and smoothly in like 10 min. Thank you for such a clear and detailed walkthrough.
Explained crisply, clearly and understandably. Got 2 Internet bikes and neither was adjusted correctly. Thanks to your tutorial, this made it easy to adjust the rear derailleur perfectly. Now both bikes shift buttery smoothly just as you demonstrate here. Thank you!
Great job! All I’ve ever gotten for advice is Adjust your limit screws then play with the barrel adjuster until it works. Your video had me dialed in in about 5 minutes. Thanks!
Thank you soooooo very much!!! I have an Lectric Ebike, and the chain had been starting to slip, and yesterday it came off on the hi gear. I already had a bike stand for it, so I had to make two adjustments following your video, and now it's working as it should. I really can't thank you enough!
I'd just bought a cheap Chinese ebike and the gears were off. Having watched another video about adjusting I thought I'd give it go. I made it worse.... I then watched your video and I realised the relationship between all the screws... I've fixed my gears. Thank you, thank you
Thank you for a clear instruction video - some make adjusting a derailleur seem so complicated. When I watched your video it simplified everything - thank you!
This was excellent. I just finished fixing a flat and adjusting the rear derailleur on my wife’s beach cruiser, so we could ride to some 4th of July festivities. Very easy to follow. We are hitting the road, thanks!
At almost 61 I've just got back in cycling with an ebike. My bike is shifting well but what you've taught me is great to know. Excellent informative video.
This is the most simple yet highly understandable video that i have seen regarding gearshifting problems...my gears works fine now after following your tutorial..kudos👍👍👍
Thank you so much for a detailed and well presented video! I also spent a bunch of time trying to figure it out on my own with no success. This video was great. Thank you
I dont have a driving license, and public transit in my area is ... not the best ... so I rely on my bike to get around. I'm greatful for this video because it saved me a trip to a bike repair shop after my 5th gear on the rear tire began to slip and then droped to the next lower gear along with gears 2-6
Thank you for going over this so well , it’s something I always forget by the time i need to adjust my derailleur again. I prefer to start this procedure by adjusting the cable clamp first, so that the cable is adjusted to be tight when the chain is set on the 7th, highest gear.
Nice instructions I was able to dial in my 21 speed. You Tube trilogy of Shimano Tourney's helped me with learning a new skill. Saved me a few $$'s too! Thanks
This helped a lot after I figured out that the cable was not tight enough. Once I loosened the nut and pulled the cable tighter, I was then able to follow this guide and get my derailleur working correctly.
Thank you for helping me sir because my rd isnt working properly and i am at 8th gear and whenever i pedal hard it will do a change gear thing for no reason but watching this video made my tourney good and fine so thanks you so much ‼️!!❤️
Very informative and professionally done video. Clearly explains the purpose of and how to adjust the high & low screws and the barrel adjuster. Thank you. One matter that wasn't addressed it what is the purpose of the screw pointing back on the rear derailleur
The screw pointing back on the derailleur adjusts the chain tension. If you just want to readjust an existing setup you typically don't have to make changes here. If it's a new installed derailleur you have to shift into the lowest gear (the one with the biggest cog at the rear) and tighten the screw until the upper pulley stops to touch the cog. With too little tension the pulley will roll onto the cog. It's well adjusted at the moment it lifts up the chain on the underside of the cog. This adjustment is independently from the other adjustments (sideways), it just stops the rattling sound the pulley will make if it rolls on the biggest cog.
Thank you for this video. I have the Shimano 6 speed derailleur and it was occasionally dropping the chain when I shifted from 5th to 6th. I studied your video and applied what you said, and no more dropped chain.
Very helpful. I get 12 yo "basement find" and had to replace all cables. Of course I didn't know how to adjust alf of this (I have only city bike) and now all is set. Thanks. :)
Excellent video. Thanks! I was able to get mine set very quickly. The only trouble was that the chrome part that the derailleur attaches to, which then attaches to the frame, was bent inward. So I wasn't able to get the chain all the way onto the high gear. All it took was a big screwdriver and some pulling on it to straighten that out. Note: a lot of the bikes have aluminum frames these days, and you DO NOT want to bend the dropouts on an aluminum frame. You can bend aluminum once, but unlike steel, it will break if you try to bend it again. So if you run into this problem on your bike, make sure you are placing your screwdriver or small crowbar onto the steel chrome piece to bend it back out, and not the frame dropout itself.
(3 years late lol) just in case you didnt know, that is the b-tension screw, it adjusts how close the derailleur gears are to the cassette, you want to adjust it so that they're about a pencil widths apart while on the low gear
I worked on my bike for 6 hours and couldn’t figure this problem out. Not one other video I watched showed me the solution in a detailed, systamatic way. Thank you so much for this amazing video, it solved all my problems.
Happy to hear!
I’m nowhere near as tenacious as you, so after two minutes I searched TH-cam and found this excellent video and got the same result.
The tourney rear derailleur come with a b tension screw that is to small. Replace that and it will be easier

By FAR the best how-to for the Tourney derailleur.
