How to play CTGP-R v1.03 on Dolphin (Full Guide)

- This is a FULL video guide which shows you how to play CTGP-R on dolphin. It assumes that you have already set up dolphin (in portable mode) with the guide linked below.
There is also a time trial run included as a demonstration that this method works, but it should be noted that this requires a VERY solid computer to run without lag.
IMPORTANT: make sure you update your Dolphin Wii menu by doing: Tools - Perform Online System Update - Current Region
Otherwise your disc drive will 'fail'.

I'm getting a "you booted ctgp in a unusual way" error despite me doing every step from the video
For some reason my ctgpr is incredibly laggy, I disabled write back cache when I get into the game, my cpu clock override is 24% and my internal resolution is 1080p. Any idea as to how I can possibly fix this low framerate issue??
sweet guide! for some reason I can't disable "enable write back cache" once the game loads. is there a workaround?
I have no clue why that wouldn't be dialable, but if I remember correctly you can set a save-state and reload it to be able to disable it. are you maybe running an older version of dolphin?

Hey, Quick question.
i am running linux mint, and i set up all of the steps seemingly correctly on the flatpak version of dolphin, and once i add the path for the launcher.dol file, dolphin crashes entireley, not just the game, but the entire dolphin task

Hey, I've gotten it all working up to the 'Press A to start' screen (main menu of the game, basically), but now it's not letting me pass. Any reason you can think of that this is happening? the guide button still brings up the Wii Home Menu, but no button progresses the screen otherwise. Thanks

Yeah on 6:14 getting the same "could not verify" error, which is preventing me from going online. I got my Wii NAND on Dolphin and everything. Is it not possible to go online for CTGP on Dolphin? Retro Rewind works fine for me online.
yes, it is not possible without one of the private bypasses people have found. CTGP-R creator hates dolphin.

When I get to this point 6:33 the game turns black. It should be noted that the UPnP on the bottom right is red for me. Idk if that's the root of the issue.

Ok, I’ve managed to everything working but I do have an issue. When I close the game it fails to save the session to the SD card. The error message shows as:
“Failed to sync card with folder. All changes made this session will be discarded on next boot if you do not manually re-issue a resume in Config > Wii > SD Card Settings > Convert File to folder now!”
try going into config -> wii -> SD Card Settings -> Convert File to Folder then Convert Folder to File right after.

make sure Mario Kart Wii is set to default ISO!
Right click Mario Kart Wii on the dolphin menu
Select 'set as default ISO'
when i connect to wimmfi (nintendo wfc) it says error 20100, i tried to update dolphin but nothing changed :(

Do I need a BootMii Nand Backup in order to play online?
CTGP-R doesn't work online via dolphin. However to play any other pack (since CTGP-R is the only one that doesn't work), you WOULD need a NAND backup.

try CTGP-D instead or double check that you follow the dolphin setup in the desc fully, beyond that idk I haven't ever heard of/ran into that issue

however, you CAN play online with both retro rewind AND wave kart wii (with wave kart being the pack I'm working on).

the installer in dolphin kept on resetting after updating ctgp saying something about turning off a "dual core mode" but i cant find that anywhere?
dual core mode is under "Config" then "General", it's the first option. weird that you have to do that lol.

@@garygary6464 there is currently a pack being worked on to get all CTGP tracks in a seperate pack (that should release in the next few days) which is much easier to use and more lightweight, if your goal is TT you can just use that instead (I'll be making a vid when it comes out).
Also working on my own track pack called wave kart wii which will go public soon as well if you are a fellow TT enjoyer (I need people to help make staff ghosts lol).

not publicly, some people have found private workarounds though. what you CAN do is retro rewind woldwides on dolphin if you have a wii NAND.

CTWW on dolphin is totally a thing, just use an alternative custom track distro (like mario kart midnight) and it will work exactly the same as standard worldwides, CTGP is only an issue because MrBean hates emulators and purposefully makes CTGP hard to run on dolphin.
@@catsup1308 I assumed when he said CTWW he meant the CTGP-R ones as that's what most people assume, I should've definitely specified that pretty much any other pack will work fine in my original comment, but TBF outside of rewind and specific events (such as playing with a streamer) I haven't seen many people online, if any.

you mean to install ctgp on the wii? any normal ctgp guide should work for that, you just need an SD card (it's not optional when it comes to wii modding since the wii has effectively 0 internal storage).

So I followed the guide down to the detail, and my game still runs very very slow even in the race. I'm running it at native resolution (also love the OW content, huge sombra main here) any other tips or troubleshooting I can do to fix my issue?
is your computer extremely good? CTGP-R with these workarounds is VERY demanding on a computer. My 3060 was struggling to maintain a constant 60 FPS.

@@szyl I realized that I missed what you said about it being only for time trials. I was trying to do a normal race. It still stutters every now and then but Its playable to me! Sorry for that.
@@nuggetva23006 I only tested time trials which is why I said that, I didn't even think to play VS mode, I mentioned that in the video more because online play shouldn't work at all. I do think that unless you want to race the CTGP-R ghosts that CTGP-D is genuinely just a better experience though. It has more options available in-game, runs better on emulator, etc. Glad you've been able to enjoy it regardless.
I got the game running and changed all the settings to make it run faster like you said, but now the game won't open. Every time I try, it's on a black screen, and nothing happens. Do you know any fixes for this?

@@thetrueoddball check the updated dolphin setup in the description, I missed 1 or 2 steps in this vid lol (because I had my own Wii NAND installed).
I also encountered this issue. You must have enable write-back cache enabled when initially opening the the CTGP menu, THEN disable it when you've reached the MKW title screen. Trying to launch the CTGP channel with it disabled stops it from functioning properly.

@@AmbientSleepMusicChannel depends on what you're looking for tbh. Personally my favorite pack (that isn't Wave Kart Wii which I've been working on) so far has been OptPack, but Deluxe and VP are great options too. There's a lot of different packs available lol.
I don't find CTGP particularly great and it has the convoluted setup shown in this vid and you can't play online through dolphin on it, so I personally don't play it almost ever.

@szyl No, I have mario Kart midnight installed, but that's just a riivolution patch, which isn't permanent
@@papyrusty368 are you sure you changed every setting in the same way? (such as enabling+disabling writeback cache at the same time) beyond that I can't really help you as I've never crashed with my settings.
if your goal is to just TT or play VS offline though (which is all you can do with CTGP-R on dolphin), I'd recommend just getting CTGP-D instead: th-cam.com/video/wSHYpcQmw9Q/w-d-xo.html

@@FinnaDie your data should not be tied to a wiimfi patch at all, a patched iso is viewed as the same by dolphin/real wiis, and even if it was viewed differently I think it should've kept your save data somewhere in your files. What did you do differently where you couldn't find your data? Noone else has had this problem so far.
As for saying there's no online at the start, that's fair enough but just not something I thought of when I was making this.
I just made a pack using pulsar that recreates ctgp so I dont need a nasa computer to play ctgp on dolphin

@@szyl nah but I can send the link when I upload it to mega. I added the expert staff ghosts from ctgp but some of them dont seem to show up for some reason. If you dont care about the expert ghosts thats fine you can still time trial tho

It worked, but its sooo slow that I cant play!
Try in Dolphin go to config > advanced > uncheck: Enable Write-Back cache (slow). It worked for me this way.
@@New-Drone Thanks, I did it but finally gave up to multiplayer cause creators from CTGP said they dont like piracy so made it slow intentionally. Tried Mario Kart Midnight and it runs smooth even on multiplayer mode!

@@owenequinox6 What I found to work was to enable the really slow setting, then load it up and create a save state, then get rid of the slow setting and load normal mario kart and then while in the selection of profile load the save state, It is quite laggy for me tho
