If your car is vibrating a lot at stop lights and shifting it into neutral causes it to smooth out, that's a good test pointing toward motor mounts. Useful for situations a little more subtle than illustrated here.

Hey my car only vibrates when I’m coming to a full stop, i put it on neutral or reverse and it doesn’t vibrate. The vibration is so loud too. Do you think it’s the motor mounts?

Fair warning, I had a car do this (2001 Chevy Malibu) for about 2 months before the head-gasket blew. There are chemical tests at the auto parts store and amazon to test for exhaust gases in the coolant, but if you have extra coolant and a funnel, you can save a few bucks and do the at-home test. Stick your funnel in the reservoir, fill it mostly with coolant, and watch for exhaust gases. Couple of small bubbles could be concerning but more likely indicative of a leak, but if you get a lot of bubbles, it could be serious.

I have a 1989 Chevy Van G20 series that's 5.7L with a V8 and I just had two of my engine mounts replaced and it just dulled the noise a bit and still having that turning even with a realignment solidified it along with the jolting with loud pop when shifting into reverse and drive. Got the low rumbles and vibrating [no more heavy thudding once two of the engine mounts got replaced] at 45-55 and just today after replacing the passenger engine mount and fuel filter, after taking a turn and starting to accelerate, she popped and jolted a bit once I hit 20mph and acceleration stopped with the noise but after that quick noise and no acceleration with my foot still holding the pedal in the same place, she started to again, hit 30mph 5-6 feet after and she did it again before continuing to drive up to 45 and hitting a low rumble that stuttered slowly and at intervals when I slowed back to 35 and kept that speed. Thank you so much man!

This is the first car I've really seriously started taking care of and maintenancing. My other and first car was a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition that was 4x4 with a V8 and I think 5L. Easy to work on, mostly did very small things but I was two years younger and very dumb with listening to others foolishness and ran it into the dirt. Results of no maintenance was blown head gaskets. What could have prevented that was me changing out a broken heater core
On my Chevy I've now personally replaced both tie rods, brakes, all four wheels, almost perfected the alignment myself [was told that when I went to get an alignment yesterday and it took them 10 minutes after they got her in and lifted]. Shops did the engine mounts, balance, proper realignment, oil change and filter and fuel filter. Hate changing out filters and flushing/draining systems. For some damn reason it's always old and wants to spray me in the face. I've changed two fuel filters in my life and got doused with gasoline because of one of them being 10 years old [the jeep] and one being 7 years old [ex fiances 94 silhouette oldsmobile]

I shared with my dad today that my car (95 Chevy Corsica) is doing a lot of the things you show in the video and this is exactly what his diagnosis of my car is (bad engine mounts). This ford van IMO I think had it to a much worse degree than my car has it, but I don't want to wait until catastrophe happens to replace them obviously. My car has 234,400+ miles on it and has lived most of its 20 year life with a relative, being driven on beat up hilly gravel roads out in the countryside. So obviously it has had its share of wear and tear as a car. I haven't had a lot of the whole "it is trying to steer itself out of line" as a symptom. But most of my symptoms show up when I am leaving work, basically backing out of the side parking lot going up a hill (I park facing down a hill). Dad said that it shows up more then because the weight is shifted more forward at that point. Most noticeable for me is the clunking it makes when shifting into reverse and drive.

Your video was super helpful, I was concerned that my 2014 Impala has broken mounts after seeing how much the engine moves under load, but I don’t experience odd vibrations, and no clunking when I shift into drive or reverse. Seeing your B&A video on a 3.8L v6, my impala is a 3.6L, and how much movement there is even after replacing the mounts, gives me confidence that mine aren’t bad. I had concerned because the movement mine has may have contributed to my air filter outlet duct failing leading to a P0171 code (system too lean). I patched the duct and cleared the code, but a few weeks later my patch failed. I patched it again and that’s when I noticed how much the engine moves when in gear. Your video gives me hope that I may not have the problem that I think I have. I won’t know until I get it up on jacks and do a closer inspection.

Hey so I just did motor mounts on my 98 Audi A4 with a manual, and seeing so many people (including myself) wanting help with symptoms of a bad mount on a manual transmission, wanted to give a good idea of what to look for in a bad mount in a manual with things that disappeared from my car after the fix.
1: Same thing with automatics, pop the hood and give the engine some revs when parked to see how much the engine moves. A little movement is okay but shouldn't be enough to move the whole car a bit. This can also be used when trying to isolate between the engine mounts and transmission mounts when you have other symptoms.
2: Gears seem to be hard to find, especially when shifting at high revs. This can be very obvious if you're going from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd at a high RPM, like you're trying to put it into gear but it doesn't feel like it's fully engaged.
3: In 1st or 2nd gear at low RPMs, your car shakes excessively when slowly engaging the accelerator at low RPM. Manuals tend to do this naturally at low speeds, like parking lots, but it shouldn't feel like being in a boat when you slowly press the accelerator. If your car has a small shake or two when letting off the gas or slowly applying it, your mounts should be fine. Otherwise, you might want to inspect them.

@GidgetPeyton I lived in Georgia and a friend told me about a mechanic shop in downtown Decatur named Rita's Auto Repair, "Mechanics a woman could trust" was on their biz cards and sign,
it was family owned by Rita & her husband, he and their 2 sons were the mechanics. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!!! Any car I brought to them they fixed it, didn't overcharge me and kept me on the road. They were the most honest people I've ever met. Unfortunately they moved out of state to take care of some family members I was heart 💔 broken. I've never found anyone else like them 😢 and I've been burnt by other mechanics even recently. I need motor mounts and I'm in California now with no where to turn, if I had the tools I would watch a few videos and do it myself I'm not afraid to break a nail. 🙃

Hey Sharon, If you buy the the tools to do the job you'll still save tons of money and have the tools for the next job. Harbor freight jack to brace up the engine is only $80 and socket set probably $30 ish. Chrisfix has saved me soooooo much money.

Hey Chris. Thanks for all your great videos, I've learned a a ton from you and your tips are always handy! I have a slight problem with my engine. It's a 2006 Mercedes SLK 280 which are notorious for having a failing balance shaft sprocket but that part is already replaced but the engine still shakes on startup and Aldo when I pit it in drive and hold my foot on the brakes. It also had a slight shake before the balance shaft was replaced but it got worse after the replacement. Do you think that this could be due to worn out engine and transmission mounts? The whole engine was pulled for the balance shaft replacement so maybe the mounts now totally gave up on functioning properly? I would like to know what you think of it. Thanks for your time and answer and keep up the good work!

Great video. I've suspected my motor mounts to be bad after watching a few other videos but after seeing this I'm nearly certain that's the problem. I'll have someone rev the engine while I look at the engine in a bit. I've had a vibration in the car that's gradually gotten worse over the past year. I just took my 2000 Ford Focus wagon in just a few weeks ago because the car drifts toward the side of the road. He said it was "radial drift" because one of the front tires is slightly larger than the other.(Though they're the same size) Now I'm not so sure! On a 20 minute drive yesterday the car's transaxle/cooling system warning light came on for a split second when I let off the gas coming to a red light. At that moment the car seemed to "lose power" (for lack of a better description) and I thought it would stall so I pulled off. After driving around a parking lot a minute, I got back on the road and made it home. I'll be in the shop first thing in the morning getting it checked.

+Bri Graham, I cannot reply to your comment for some reason but watch the video and see if the engine shakes when you go in and out of gear or start it up. It will shake just a little normally but it shouldn't shake a lot. Let me know what you find. It could also be shaking because it is idling poorly with a possible misfire. Do you have any check engine lights?

I got it aligned a few months back when I replaced my upper arms and lower ball joints and now that I saw your video I have no doubt that it might be the mounts. I was going to replace them tomorrow anyway hoping that was going to be the problem but now that I watched your video I'm certain that's what it is, at least that's what I'm hoping. Again thanx for the video. Wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year bro.

I have a v6 front wheel drive Mitsubishi 380 (Australia) in the US they call them a Gallant.
They have one main engine mount, one main transmission mount & two smaller engine roll mounts that sit front & rear of the engine in about the about center of the motor.
Now, when the small front or rear roll mount on the engine center cross-member breaks the transmission feels like its slipping in drive. When I put in the new mount it drives great again. Funny thing is that there is not much difference in engine movement with a new or broken mount, and not enough to stop it from driving you would think. But No, she wont go anywhere until you replace the offending roll mount. Its a crazy car at times.

One of the engine mounts on my 2005 Saturn Relay minivan is pretty shot, and I don't get engine knocking or shaking like in the video, its only symptom is extremely strong engine vibration when idling at ~600-900 rpm. I'm not fixing it because of the cost (just driving the car into the ground at this point) but to prolong the life I put it in neutral when at stop lights which seems to cut down the vibration a huge amount
