    Small correction, the Celtics actually RECIEVED 2 first round picks along with Porzingis in exchange for Marcus Smart

    As a Celtics fan who watched through all these years it was really rewarding to see it all come together this year. They traded Garnett and Pierce became they were starting to age but did it early enough to still get some value for them. Turns out they started to show their age with the Nets probably quicker than expected. They both are still Cs legends who come to home games fairly often.

    Most teams can't predict their own rebuild. Steph had ankle issues for the first few years of his career, and the Warriors traded away other All-Stars to believe in him, and it gave them 4 titles. Milwaukee and Denver drafted Giannis and Jokic with the intent of them being role players, but their own work ethic turned them into superstars and brought a ring home to their cities. The Thunder and Wolves were lottery teams just a few years ago, and are now two favorites to come out of the West thanks to good drafting, trades, and ascension of players

    As a couple others have said, as a Celtics fan it was pretty clear that Pierce and KG were starting to show their age, and KG was never the same after his injury. They weren't really a title contender anymore and were only going to get worse. The Nets had a decent team already, so they made the trade in hopes of making a superteam to "win now". I don't really agree how it was framed like it was insanely favorable for the Nets at the time. The celtics took the bet that the picks would be nice (likely because they felt Pierce and KG would decline pretty quick), and the picks ended up being better than expected. On the question about having so many players through the years - that happened because they were rebuilding. So you move players around left and right trying to one up every piece, get guys on tradable contracts, release guys you receive as filler in trades, etc. Danny Ainge was also infamous for stock piling picks, so they ended up getting a lot of expendable pieces that way. They also had top guys get injuries that they would have probably kept for longer if that weren't the case (IT, Kemba, etc). Now that they have a proven title contender they basically are bringing back their entire team next year. They're in the process of selling the team now, so hopefully the new owner will be willing to pay to keep the top players.

    The Celtics are the first NBA team with three Team USA members since the Golden State Warriors in 2016. The Oklahoma City Thunder also had three representatives in 2012. But I believe they are one of the first to have three players that just came off a championship win as well to be on the USA team together

    • @mithrilmage
      @mithrilmage หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      correct, if we win gold, they'll be the first trio to get both in the same year

  • @psymar
    @psymar หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Also a detail I remember about this trade: Normally when teams trade first round draft picks, there is a "top 3 protected" clause. Since any team that misses the playoffs can theoretically get a top 3 pick through the draft lottery, it's normal to add a clause to trades that if the pick winds up being in the top 3, the original team keeps the top-3 pick and trades their next year's top pick instead. And any team can have a rash of injuries and miss the playoffs so this is very standard operating procedure. The fact that the Nets were so overconfident that they didn't protect the picks in this trade is what made this happen.

    The Bucks basically gave us a title when they gave up Jrue Holiday to build a super team with Giannis and Dame.

    A first round swap turning into Tatum is insane. Swaps are usually thrown around in trades as filler. Celtics are so well built to win one or two more.

    The reason that the picks weren't in back to back years is there's actually an NBA rule against that called the Stepien rule. A former Cavs owner traded 4 straight 1st round picks and almost ruined the team.

      @UnconventionalReasoning It was so bad that after he sold the Cavs, the league game them first round picks again. At one point the league told him picks couldn't be included in trades

    As a Celtics fan, losing KG and Pierce was emotionally tough, but if you were following their careers it was plain that both players were slowing with age. How the Nets didn't see that, I don't know.

    You mentioned the win now mentality of Chelsea. Well the owner of the Nets at the time was Mikhail Prokhorov a fellow Russian oligarch like Abramovich. He told his GM to get the deal done like an oligarch does and Danny Ainge being Danny Ainge kept asking for more unprotected draft picks. This win now mentality came back to bite the Nets in the ass because KG aged very quickly and only played 2 seasons with the Nets and Paul Pierce chose not to re-sign with the Nets when his contract expired after 1 season with the Nets.
    The main driving factor behind Danny's decision was the fact that LeBron was still in Miami and the Celtics at the time were just too old to get past that juggernaut of a Miami team. So he decided to begin the rebuild a season or two early when the players still had value and then build through the draft.
    There was tons of luck involved on the Celtics end due to the total collapse of the Nets though.

    It’s just so hard for any team to stay on top. It’s not designed that way. When u see the team starting to decline you should trade and get as many picks as you can. Draft picks are gold

    That trade for Garnett and Pierce did bring the Nets back to respectability and a few playoff appearances but they only made the second round once in that stretch and no further. It did kick off an era where the Nets would trade for aging high-profile talent that wouldn't make them much better and they have only made the second round once again in 2021 but lost to the eventual-champion Bucks in 7 after being up 3-2.

  • @deonlepharaoh

    He also didn't mention jason kidd being the nets head coach at the time of that trade....so he, assuming he had anything to do with that trade, ultimately traded away pieces that built a team he would ultimately lose to 10 years later in the finals

    Paul Pierce and Garnett are two of the best players ever, they were just older and past their prime. The nets had one or two all star (ish) caliber players on their roster already, so they wanted to try to form a super team. The celtics realized that they probably weren't going to beat the likes of the Lebron-led miami heat at that time, among others, so they decided it was best to start over instead of running into the wall over and over.

    The reason they had so many player was because Ainge purposely either signed players to 1 year deals or traded for guys that had expiring contracts.
    Another fun fact is Ainge nearly traded the picks that ended up being Brown and Tatum to Miami for the chance to draft Justice Winslow (who is a bust) but thanks this his beef with Ainge during the 80s Pat Riley refused and took Winslow to spite Ainge. We could have easily talked about how the Heat robbed the Celtics and they could have had Brown and Tatum right now.

    The 2012-13 Celtics were an aging .500 team. They were going nowhere fast. To be honest, the Pierce, Garnett, Allen Celtics were a disappointment, having only won a single title, while only making the finals twice. I think Celtics fans were happy that they didn’t make the mistake of holding on to good players who still had value, as they did in the late 80s with Kevin McHale and Robert Parish (they never could have traded Larry Bird). And, the success they’ve had recently with drafting has undone a lot of mistakes they’ve made, or bad luck they’ve had over the past 40 years. Don’t forget, they had made an amazing trade in 1984 that gained the 2nd pick in the draft, and they chose Len Bias, who was extremely highly regarded, and he was coming to a great team. He died of a cocaine overdose two days later. That was the end of the old Celtics.

    • @psymar

      If they'd traded Larry Bird he would've won a title the next year just to spite them

      Disappointement, lol. No one foresaw the KG injury which changed the trajectory of the team. And by the time they teamed up together, they were already in their 30s. To say that they were a disappointment with a 3-5 year window and managed to win 1 is a casual take. I guess Spurs is a dissapointment too because they only won 5 titles in 18 years of Duncan's tenure

    We still haven't seen the Celtics at there best. Offensive they was just average, Defense was really good. Zingis played less than half the games. JT was in a shooting slump that he still in for USA Team. Yet his overall game was good.

    Jxmyhighroller made great video but some of his facts was a little wrong. Danny Ainge figured that the 2017 & 2018 pick was going to be good because he knew Kevin Garnett’s knee wasn’t going to hold up and he can’t move much anymore. The 2016 pick was a surprised because while Ainge figured Pierce and Garnett didn’t have much left he didn’t think they would suck that quickly.
    Fun Fact: All Celtics fan including myself have Paul Pierce to thank for this because KG had a no trade clause and was going to say no to the trade but Pierce convinced him. That is why sometimes Pierce take credit for this team 😂. You can find TH-cam clips of Pierce saying to KG that our parting gift after I convinced you to go to the Nets are Tatum and Brown.

    LOL. What this video doesn't tell you is that Danny Ainge is the luckiest guy on earth. This creator didn’t tell the whole story. Danny Ainge, in 2015, was trying to trade 6 picks, including 4 first rounders for the rights to draft Justice Winslow. All the crap on here wouldn't have happened and the Celtics would have been in the cellar. They tried doing it first with the Hornets who had the 9th pick, and when they didn’t pick him, they tried with the Heat who had the 10th pick. To this day, it's the worst draft decision Pat Riley ever made. He should've said, yes to the deal. The Heat would've been set for decades. Danny Ainge was way more lucky than good.

    I don't know what Jimmy high roller was talking about. At the time people thought the Celtics absolutely robbed the Nets. They traded 3 aging vets on the downside of their careers for all those draft picks. 50 cents on the dollar in favor of the Celtics.

    Celtics bought their way to a ring after years of failures
    And the reason the Nets trade worked so well was cause the Nets were under the impression that the Russian billionaire owner would actually spend money on free agents to compete but he did a complete 180 and was cheap which therefore caused the Celtics to get free lottery picks via Brooklyn
