The best American Olympic moment ever BY FAR, is when a group of college hockey players were thrown together for a few months.....hockey being America's 4th most popular team sport and defeating the professional national all-star team of the Soviet Union. A professional national all-star team that spent their ENTIRE careers playing together, in a nation where hockey is their number 1 team sport.
That level of upset had never been seen before, or since. It would be like having the 92' American basketball Dream Team not only assembled for a single tournament, but to have played together for years and end up losing to a bunch of college kids from the Soviet Union.
    In other words.....a MIRACLE.

I heard a recent story from a reporter covering the 92 Dream Team that during one of the games against either Italy or Spain a very good Italian or Spanish player ended up getting caught in a switch on defense to where he was guarding the post against Magic Johnson. As soon as that happened, he started shouting over to his team's bench "Photograph! Photograph!" He was just so thrilled to be playing against Magic that he needed someone to take his picture guarding him.

"Who was that?....Tell me everything about him!" - That's Greg Louganis. He won gold medals in both '84 and '88. He is the only man and the second diver in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games. He notoriously hit his head on the 3 meter springboard in the '88 Olympics, bleeding into the pool and didn't disclose his HIV positive status until 1995. No one was... almost certainly... in any danger (chlorine kills HIV), but he's caught some flak for not letting the other participants know. I think we watched replays of him hitting his head on TV for months and months in 1995.

The 1972 U.S. Olympic basketball literally had the gold medal stolen form them by an off court official who had no authority over the game. He ordered time be put back on the clock so that the Commies could win the game. The entire team boycotted the medal ceremony and refused to accept their medals. To this day,, 52 years later, the medals still sit in a vault at the IOC's headquarters in Switzerland. The loss of this game is not what lead to the downfall of amateur basketball team we sent to international events. It was the rest of the world using professional players pretending to be amateur athletes in order to catch up with us. Once the governing body opened their eyes and saw what was actually going on, the Dream Team was born and we kicked ass once again.

    • @TeganX7
      @TeganX7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Every couple of years, the team is asked by the IOC if they want their medals, with the proviso apparently being that it must be unanimous. Not one player has taken up the offer. At least one player has added a proviso to their will barring any descendant from having permission to accept on his behalf.

I never saw the 1992 Olympics (I was only 10) but I kept hearing about the "Dream Team" at school and I was aware of the likes of Michael Jordon, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson. Oh and my dad told me that Spurs David Robinson was on the team too (my family are San Antonio Spur Fans lol). A good chunk of the team are considered Basketball Icons.
Now I DID watch the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. I was a fan of Gymnastics by this time and I remember watching everything about the Women's Team competition. See Kerri Strug's performance, I screamed with joy while my heart broke at the same time. I was 14 at the time so I was close to the age of some of these girls. It was VERY inspiriting. Oh the team there also had a nickname, they were called the Magnificent 7 and this was our first Team Gold Medal. A part of me is hoping that for LA in 2028, Kerri Shrug will be the one to light the cauldron because the last 2 times US hosted an Olympic games, they've picked Athletes that were heroes like Ali and the Miracle on Ice Team.
2008 Olympics was CRAZY. Yeah that relay was crazy! I was gob smacked for sure! It did seem like a miracle haha. This was the Olympics when Phelps won gold in every event he was in and this one was the most special for sure.
Now I wasn't alive in 1980, but my parents watched that match and it was one of biggest moments in sports ever. I did grow up learning about that match and so when I saw the Miracle on Ice Team (coach included) at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics Opening Ceremony to light the final cauldron, I cheered and wasn't surprised by that standing ovation for them too.

Thanks for the reaction guys! Good video in theory. Considering we have multiple iconic moments pretty much every Olympics, def can't come even close to being comprehensive in ten minutes, especially when 6 of that is spent on Miracle on Ice and Dream Team. Kind of dissapointing compilation from the original creator's side imo

Greg Louganis is the name of the diver of the decade. I don't know if they covered Mark Spitz the 70's. Seven Gold and 7 world records in 1972 Munich. Olga Korbut was a tiny Russian gymnast at those games. Nadia didn't come in till 1980

The reason the soviets still got silver was because the medal round of the hockey event was the four best teams and they all played each other in a round robin and the best record (3-0) wins gold and so on so bc the us was undefeated in the medal round they won gold but the soviets only lost once so they won silver

This is a few of the moments but nearly a good chunk. Missing Mary Lou Renton's perfect 10's in gymnastics in 1994, and is missing tons though the hockey one is probably the top in team sport wins cited. Number of them this year including the men's 1500m unexpected victory and 100m that was won despite a time tie down to the 1000'th. Even the 400 was pretty amazing in the last 50.

I'm moving my first timestamp to the top because it is so wacky.
16:04 - HOLY CRAP!! I actually just learned something about this too so I'll pass it on to y'all. I always knew that the Soviet game was the second-to-last game and Finland was the final game which means I always assumed that Finland won silver and the Soviets got either 3rd or 4th. When I saw Sweden's uniforms and flag in this shot and also being confused about the placement of the Soviets in what appeared to be silver-medal position, I looked it up. Turns out that the Final Round of that tournament was a modified group stage. They took the top 2 teams from each of the 2 groups and had them play the top 2 teams from the opposite group. The final standings would be determined by those games AND the results of the group stage games between the teams from the same groups. The US and Sweden topped our group and the USSR and Finland topped theirs. The first 2 "games" of this final round were essentially the 2-2 draw the US played against Sweden in the group and the 4-2 for the USSR over Finland from the group. Then, the US beat the USSR 4-3, Sweden and Finland drew 3-3, the US beat Finland 4-2 and the USSR beat Sweden 9-2. This all created (based on a 2 points per win system) a final table of the US with 5 points, the USSR with 4, Sweden with 3 and Finland with 1. Weird wild shit if you ask me.
3:40 - The craziest thing for me about seeing NBA players at the Olympics is seeing them wear numbers that look so out of place for them. Back in 1992, FIBA required numbers to only be from 4 to 15 to make it easier to signal to the scoring table who committed personal or technical fouls. They don't require this anymore but Team USA and a few other teams still maintain a tradition of doing that.
7:02 - The best thing about that Keri Strug moment is that the Russians and Romanians had been thoroughly dominant in the team competitions for decades. Russia/the Soviet Union hadn't lost since they first entered the competition in 1952. We had some great individual gymnasts during that period but the team never had a chance but this '96 team was the best all-around team we had in a while and, while still underdogs, had a good chance of competing for gold. They went into the vault in the lead and the second-to-last vaulter only needed to land her vault to clinch gold but she fell both times and then Strug fell and injured herself and it felt like we had just choked the gold away. For her to land that with all that pressure and being injured was one of the most incredible things I had ever seen on live TV.
9:40 - Yes, Spitz was also American and held the previous record with 7 gold medals in one Olympics until Michael got the 8 in 2008. This is also up there for one of the most incredible things I ever saw on live TV.
10:46 - Yeah, that was the world record line. The 2008 Olympics were the one where the swimsuits got so jacked up to the point that almost every world record fell and they had to change the rules to ban that specific type of suit.
11:18 - Greg Louganis (loo-GAIN-iss). At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he hit his head on the board during a dive and busted his head open during the 3 meter springboard prelims and got a concussion but recovered and won gold in that event and then also the 10 meter platform.

Michael Phelps, also from the 2008 games out-touching his opponent by 0.01 seconds after coming from behind and taking a half-stroke that he thought lost it for him in the 100 meter butterfly was nuts.

Michael Phelps just doesn't have the most medals and gold medals of any Olympian ever. He has more gold medals than 112 countries in the summer Olympics, and 113 countries in combined Winter and Summer golds. He has more total medals of any type than 87 countries. And that's if you don't include coalitions like when the Russians had to compete under an IOC flag because they were the only ones not caught doping when Russia got banned or when there were Mixed Olympic teams or teams like Australasia or Individual Neutral Athletes.
