  • I’m often asked (seriously) - if I need to buy a gun, what should I get?
This is my case HK’s P30 series.
Not my favorite gun - but a gun I think that does everything well.

I was deep into HK VP9 and P30 V3 pistols from 2014 - 2018 and ended up selling them all; VP9 because of ergonomics and P30 because of trigger. When LTT came out with P30 models in 2022, I went all in. P30 LEM are now my main EDC above PX4, P01, P07, or C2.

Agree, I have the HK P2000sk LEM with Gray Guns Short Reset Trigger and would not want it in HK traditional da/sa. I am ok with Beretta and Sig in traditional da/sa, but not HK.

Likewise my friend, had a P30s, V3, and L and finally got rid of the last one, never miss them. The trigger is the Achilles heal on the platform. The gun can never reach its potential with the absolutely horrible trigger. Still have a number of HKs but won’t buy another.

I put the grey guns short reset kit in my P30 V1 LEM. It made the reset half the distance it was. Amazing

@swahington942 still have a 45c, 45ct, USP 45t and triggers all have shorter resets and more “tactile”. P30 is a good gun but that is not a trigger you should see on a $800 handgun.,

P30 is amazing imo. I am also a big fan of the paddle mag release also. I would really like to have a P30 with Langdon Tactical tweaks. Another consideration may be the CZ P07.

I have the P30 V1 LEM with the Grey Guns short reset. It completely changed the gun. I kept the original curved trigger only because the flat trigger takes up space to get your finger into the trigger guard. It made the reset just as short as the VP9.

I'm a firm Hk45/USP fan myself, but I'm still shocked people don't pick up the P30 like I feel they should. If you can get over the look of the "batman" grip (they really should've kept the Larry Vickers grip on the fullsize hk45 too but I digress) they're fantastic and super comfortable to hold.

Great pistol review. P3O is very good. I like HK also. I did, however chose the HK p2000 V2 LEM 9mm, which as a concealed carry gun, works well for me. The Law Enforcement modification trigger, I like best.

I traded in a Sig P320 M17 for one of these and have never regretted it. This one accurate pistol. I have the 40 s&w version and it shoots great also.

My go to do it all gun is 357mag. wheel guns. Practice with 38's and use snake loads too. That's what i carry in Northern Arkansas. When i travel beyond that it may be a 1911 or what ever current 9mm i'm playing with. Current tricked out house gun is a ruger security 9. For the record i just started getting into the 9mm stuff the last 5 years or so. lol before that it was 45acp or 40sw. stuff.

I really love my P30's. The L actually conceals appendix without too much difficulty, believe it or not. Honestly it really is probably my favorite "do-anything" pistol I've EDC'd it and also ran USPSA with it. I might swap out the stock glow in the dark sights (not tritium night sights), they are fine sights but not very precise, I might throw a fiber optic front sight on there for better precision. Between this and my P2000 they are my favorite HK's.

The most important number 1 rule is how does it feel when you grip it and how the weight feels when in yr shooting position it looks like they added alot of features to fit alot of different people for me the usp line feels good for me

I am a lefty too. I have just one P30. Standard size, V1 Lite LEM. Trijicon HD sights. Have had it many years. All 10 of my mags are the 15 rounders, that should tell you I’ve had it awhile. Same size as a Glock 19, which means it is a do it all pistol. My trigger has gotten better and better over the 2k rounds I’ve put thru it. I have considered installing the Gray Guns short reset. The P30 is difficult to shoot well if you are jumping back and forth from other pistols in your collection. If it was your only pistol in short time you can master it. Always takes me a mag or 2 before I start getting use to it after shooting my Glocks.
I still believe the P30 is the best looking polymer pistol that has ever been made.
Had a CZ 75 Shadow Target once. It shot incredible. But because of the weight there is no way I would ever carry it. Just not practical. Had others like it, which I got rid of. It was just a range toy it went bye bye

Excellent review as usual. I’ve come to the same conclusion that HKs are fantastic pistols but I prefer my metal framed CZs. I too appreciate a great trigger and CZs with Cajun Gun Works upgrades cannot be beat. I shoot my CZs better than any of my HKs.

I've had my P30 for over 10 years now and it's still my favorite pistol (although I'm shooting my Staccato a lot more these days). I used to EDC a Walther PPQ but wanted something a bit safer to carry so getting used to the P30 trigger did take some time but eventually I began to like it (but I still love that PPQ trigger). Since then I've added the Gray Guns flat trigger and short reset which is a game-changer for the P30! My other quirks with P30 was my thumb keeps riding the huge slide release so I have to change my grip a bit and I've always found it to be a bit snappy. I've added a threaded barrel and tried some of the cheaper HKparts compensators but they kind of suck, so now I have PMM comp on order. If you're not familiar with Wright Armory (Mesa, AZ) they've been perfecting optic cuts for HK's and are on par with LTT if not better. I've looked at adding an RDO but I shoot my P30 pretty well already and don't feel like spending any extra lol.

Thanks for the review! I own both the P30 and P30 SK, both in variant 3, like the one in your review. I like both of them and find them superior to most other tupperware guns out there, especially Glocks. While the triggers aren't perfect, they are still pretty good, I think. BTW, I don't recommend carrying them in "cocked and locked" mode -- they really aren't designed for that. Since they're double-action, it really isn't necessary.

The de cocker is located at the left side of the rear of the gun and is thus not user-friendly to left-handed shooters. That is not ambidextrous and prevented me from selecting the P2000 years ago. That was indeed unfortunate there and here as well. The gun gets a big FAIL as far as I am concerned. I would not select this particular model with these features, but I do know that there are other variations that would be suitable for me.

I hit whatever I'm shooting at, so what's all tge complaining and whining about. You don't want yoyr H&K's anymore, I'll buy them. Your loss my gain.

That thumb safety in that P30 is not ergonomic at all! If you have to pull it out of the holster in an emergency, it is not a smooth action to deactivate the safety. Compare it with the M&P 2.0 or the safety equipped P365 XL or Xmacro

While I believe in paying homage to HK predecessors I believe the VP9 to be the best of the line up currently and one of the best striker fired handguns.
The barrel metallurgy is the same as the P30 so you can expect a long life. The trigger is significantly better than any other STOCK HK pistol and comes red dot ready.
A few highly regarded instructors in the industry have over 60k rounds on their VP9. While I don’t have that many rounds due to getting it 3 months ago I do have 2k live fire rounds with not a single issue. Majority of the ammo being CCI aluminum.
