Mr Bananas Gives Us A Piece Of His Mind Whilst Enjoying His Banana

- Once I had cut the large aperture netting off Mr Bananas, he calmed down considerably and started to enjoy his banana although he was not shy in voicing an intermittent opinion.
Although hopelessly trussed up in netting, Mr Bananas has no apparent injuries at this time but I will closely monitor him just in case.
A huge thank you to Lauren for completing her first bat rescue and also to the homeowner for taking all of his netting down to prevent any future entrapments in his mango tree.

I always laugh at the bats deciding to stuff their mouth with banana even if they haven’t swallowed their first mouthful 🤣
That's because they don't swallow it, they simply suck all the juice out of it and spit out the dry old fibrous part that's left. They can't just eat the fruit as we do because, as I understand it, their digestive tract is not equipped to handle all that fiber, which could cause an obstruction.
Yes! Me too. Some only bite off enough. Others try to fit the whole banana in =)

I absolutely love seeing their little ears wiggle, seeing them look at you intently while you're talking, and their little noises. They are absolutely precious little babies.

Look at his intense look as he listened to you discuss his unfortunate predicament! Occasionally emphasizes how truly terribly it was! This made me smile, but I also feel saddened. There must be a better way to coexist when it comes to fruit trees.
There is. Small aperture netting (small enough that you can't stick your fingers in it) that's either stretched taut on a frame around the tree, or brought in close and tied around the trunk poses *significantly* less threat to all wildlife.
I doubt it presents *no* threat, as small animals with pointy bits can get tangled in darn near anything, but the risk is greatly lowered and the likely harm if caught far less.
(Batties aren't the only animals who get caught in large aperture netting - anything from birds to lizards to snakes can get tangled in it as well.)
We like mosquito netting for our blueberries.

BUT, I still do not understand why Australian wildlife organisations don't campaign to outlaw such netting or make it compulsory that the netting come with a clear warning.
What is the netting for? Do you know?
@walle5667 it's to keep critters from getting to and eating the fruit on trees. There are much safer kinds of netting to use however

There are types of coverings that are designed to not allow animals to get caught in them (they are really more like shear fabric rather than net). However they are quite a bit more expensive and somewhat harder to find so most people either don't know about them or can't afford them.
