The lack of struggle from the mom is devastating, she must have been so unwell. I know that bats can be quite friendly, but if a stranger is grabbing you and your babies and touching all over your body there should be at least some attempt to get away. I'm glad you were there to help!
As much as we need maggots to clean dead and decaying refuse, we don't need them eating things alive! Poor mama. Glad she's cleaned up and the family is doing better!
Christine Lee there are also various species of flies and their larvae...some, like these ones hatch out under the skin of a living animal. Each species of fly has its preferred incubator/host. It might just expand their survival chances to be on a living creature, since scavengers and carrion eaters don’t mind eating maggots along with the dead flesh, while they generally leave a healthy animal alone. 🖤🇨🇦

@@octoknight1849 Hi Octo - all flying-foxes are bats but not all bats are flying-foxes. Think of it like this - bat is an umbrella term for all kinds of bats and flying-foxes are a specific kind of bat - a kind of fruit bat. If in doubt just call them bats and that's a correct term - but specifically the kind of bat in the video is a Grey-Headed Flying-Fox. They can also be known as a flying-fox, and as a fruit bat. But not all fruit bats are like this bat in the video. I'm not sure if this answer helps or confuses further. I wouldn't call myself a rock star. It's far easier to pick off the maggots with my hands than it is to do it another way and I just do it. It's not brave, because I'm not scared of the maggots or the bats, so it's not heroic in any way. It's just something one does when confronted with maggots.
I'm sorry I couldn't do that touching maggots I hate those thing they are so scary and they eat holes in thing I have that hole phobia lol because I hate holes

My dad told me about a time he had an encounter with a bat in college. It was late at night and he was in bed studying, and he hears a scratching. He looks to the window and sees a bat stuck between the screen and the glass. He doesn’t think much of it at first, but the bat gets free and flies onto the bed. My dad screams and jumps out, terrified. He then tosses a pillow onto the bat to trap it and tries to figure out what to do. So he goes to the kitchen and gets a newspaper and a pot, then goes back to see that the bat is almost free. So he quickly takes off the pillow, covers the bat with the pot, and shuffles the newspaper under it. Then he carries it to the window and lets it fly free. When all is said and done, he realizes he wasn’t the only one who was terrified. The bat was so scared that it had peed on the bed.
Thanks Frank. It's often surprising to people how smart and how passive they can be. Mostly though, Riki has knocked herself silly and can't even figure out which way is up - she's not deliberately being gentle - she is just so unwell she lets it happen because she can't fight any further.

Babies are given pacifiers/dummies/binkies to help them feel more secure. In the wild, baby would be on mum’s nipple 24/7 for the first month, occasionally letting go to change sides or to have a stretch and stickybeak. A baby holds onto its mum’s nipple with tiny sharp backwards curving teeth, and knows by holding on, it can’t fall. I’m reliably informed that mum’s nipples have very few nerve endings which I feel is a sensible evolutionary blessing. A baby who has a pacifier firmly clenched in its teeth, is less grabby, less stressed, and much more relaxed and secure. Sometimes a baby, with the pacifier firmly clenched in their teeth for security, will just let go with their feet, with and be very surprised when they fall. For this reason when we put the babies on an airer or hang them somewhere, we make sure there is a sling or something to catch them if they let go. In the wild, mum’s nipple is attached to mum.
@@Megabattie Woah super interesting behavior, makes a lot of sense for such a light mammal too. Still no matter how light the baby or unfeeling the nipple, that's gotta suck lol.
@@Megabattie Lol I don’t know why I laughed so hard - “I’m reliably informed that mum’s nipples have very few nerve endings which I feel is a sensible evolutionary blessing.” Amen to that. @@mar-shagazorpazorp6431 I only had one baby ever bite me on the nipple, and there was blood and tears, all mine. I was feeding in the middle of the night (not wearing a bra, of course, because it was 2am). The milk was a bit hot so I had him cuddled to my chest until it cooled enough to feed him, and given that it was early in the season and the nights were cold, my pointy out bits were pointing out, and he just turned his head to the pointy out bit, and bit onto it. Blood and tears, all mine. Had he been a human offspring I might very well still be in prison for infanticide. Bat mums have babies bite onto their nipple to hang on during flight. Without the evolutionary blessing of no sensation, I doubt any bat babies would survive their first few hours of life.
I dont often give this compliment, but the way you handle those creatures in your care (and i have watched quite a few of your videos) is like "poetry in motion" Thank you for all you do.
I'm so glad Riki will not have to care for the twins in the wild. You know one of them would die. She's a great, loving batMum to have taken them back without a problem. The whole family deserves to live in safety after what they've been through.
Another video I was unable to breathe throughout. And can we take a moment to discuss how much I hate maggots. Thank you for looking after these precious ones. I hope Mama pulls through
Maggots serve a role in nature of cleaning up carrion and feces that otherwise would contaminate the environment. Nature isn't kind, and without human assistance the mother bat and her babies would have died, so the flies were getting a head start for their own young by laying eggs on the dying bats.
Science Compliance The main illness blowflies might be likely to cause is myiasis (this looked like the type of fly’s hatched eggs to me). Myiasis is an infestation of blowfly larvae. The mothers often lay their eggs in an un-injured animal, and all you see until they eat their way through to being an adult, and then fly away looks like a large boil under the skin. I DO think the disgust is instinctive in humans, most likely because opportunistic bacteria can invade after the flies are gone...leaving an open wound.🖤🇨🇦
One bat at a time. I don't do the big picture (that's for politicians and lobbyists and committees (!!! I loathe committees)). I just work on one bat at a time, and upload onto YT so other people see what I do.
Poor Mom...she must have been exhausted hanging by the pool for days with two babies.. I hope they all make it to have a full life. Thanks so much Meg...that was interesting. I was wondering if I would ever see a batty with twins.!
I don't know that she was beside the pool all the time. Maybe she was in a tree in the neighbour's yard after she hit her head, then tried to fly when she needed food and water. The pool is a body of water - sometimes the bats see it and bellydip and skim the water, but they don't see the glass pool fences.

@@crystalmitchell9054 The babies think that you're their mum and want to be with you and hang on you and pee on you. The older they are though, the longer it takes for you to accept them as their mum, because they have known their real batty mum and know you're not it, but once they accept that their real mum isn't coming back, they can be very sooky and dependent on their humum. The adults aren't tame and will never be, but they can be accepting of care and allow handling if they build up a trust with you over time. I'm amazed that all 3 seem to be in stable-ish condition after all that grief - pretty amazing really. I'm also amazed at how quickly those 20 minutes went - had me gripped the whole time.
The rehydration reminded me of a cat we used to have. When he got older, he started having kidney problems, so we ended up needing to do something like that to dehydrate him daily. Apparently it's a standard thing for cats with that type of organ failure. He was not hugely thrilled with it to begin with, but my mother could be one of those forces of nature when it mattered, so that was not a terribly successful resistance. It actually got to be kind of funny after a while. He eventually seemed to figure out he felt a lot better after the hydration. He still had to complain, but it was more in the "I am a cat, therefore I must non-comply" vein, and then he'd just hold still for you to fill him up, and the squooze it all around into him. He may have been a few knives short of a spork, but he was an adorable creampuff.
Yes, I've had several friends whose cats needed this and asked me to come over and help them do it for the first week till they got some confidence. The cats adapt quite well.

No, they're not naturally trusting - she seemed calm because she had a head injury. If a wild animal seems "tame", it generally means they are very unwell.
@@TheTillmanSneakerReview i wouldn't say its necessarily how close they live to us, wild mice live in our houses but they aren't tame or trusting! and though wild animals can become used to humans, like the sparrows my mum feeds nearly knock at her door at grain time, that doesn't mean they're comfortable with humans catching or handling them - they're still wild. also just to clarify, a street dog is completely domesticated - all dogs are domesticated animals, because they've been bred to live with and get along well with humans. are you thinking about tameness? also while you could feasibly call a dingo a 'wild dog' (although it seems more like a feral subspecies of domestic dogs, ie a genetically domestic animal but would need to be tamed to get used to humans), a coyote is not a wild dog - its a different species.
@Kirsty Sixtus I suggest watching more of these videos- you will see any number of bats screaming biting and thrashing because they don't know the human is trying to help. The only difference between those struggling bats and this one is that this one has a head injury. She's not psychic, she's brain injured (as I believed the lady who made this video has explained herself). I know it's nice to imagine that animals can "tell you're trying to help" but if that was the case the lady uploading these videos wouldn't need to wear gloves, I certainly wouldn't have been bitten kicked bunted and scratched by various wild and domestic animals over the years, and in general vets and wildlife rescuers all over would have much easier jobs. I'm sure there are some times when animals work it out - hell, you can see the "juice moment" for bats when they get delicious food and realise maybe death isn't imminent after all - but in general if a wild animal seems "tame", there's something seriously wrong with it.

I found it strange, I thought maggots ONLY eat decaying tissue, so why were they there?
They prefer dead tissue but in large numbers they go for living tissue, the warmer and more tender the better

Your dad pissed the bed and needed an excuse.
And it was the dog that farted.

Never knew that you could give baby bats dummies that’s really cute

I'm not that fond of maggots either
Maggots serve a role in nature of cleaning up carrion and feces that otherwise would contaminate the environment. Nature isn't kind, and without human assistance the mother bat and her babies would have died, so the flies were getting a head start for their own young by laying eggs on the dying bats.
I think disgust at maggots might be instinctive, as they signify a potential source of disease.

I don't know that she was beside the pool all the time. Maybe she was in a tree in the neighbour's yard after she hit her head, then tried to fly when she needed food and water. The pool is a body of water - sometimes the bats see it and bellydip and skim the water, but they don't see the glass pool fences.

Lol..I'm still trying to figure out why they were there? Damn I hate flies!
I had a pet brown bat for 6 weeks as a 12 yr old.. finally concluded that caging a flying animal was bullshit, and let him go.
To this day I can't own a flying animal, even as much as I love them.
@@espnpokerclub1246 Good on you

TH-cam knows us too well
I'm so glad your educating people about these sweet helpless creatures.
So amazing to see the care you give. I also never considered how fragile these creatures are and how vulnerable. I hope Riki makes a full recovery and glad she is in such good care. Warms the heart.
What a kind and loving human being you are. You're doing God's work and He loves you for your tireless efforts. People forget how much God loves his animals. I was thoroughly amazed by your gentle skills. God Bless you and all of the animals that you've saved, past & present. Take much needed daily breaks allowing yourself your favorite things. You deserve the best.
The way they're weighed made me chuckle. Little buggers haha
Her wings are so dark that my screen couldn’t handle it. Soo cute
Yeah my screen is doing that weird thing where big pixels with different shades of black appear
Even if Rikki didn’t make it, she was cared for and had a calm life for whatever Remington time she had. Great job.
I had a baby bat called JubJub.
You can see her video if you search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/JubJub
@@Megabattie Oh I would love to see that. Will do! They act so tame! I thought they would be biting more than what I see in your videos.
In this video, Riki has smacked her head so badly she isn't really sure what is what, adn being looked after and cared for, she has developed some rapport and trust with them.
@@Megabattie You are such a good human to care for them. I have not heard back from my sister-in-law about their bat but I think its a full grown male. Our bats here in the US are much smaller than your flying foxes. If I could I'd post the picture of it. It has some sort of an appendage coming from its groin so I think its a male.
You do an amazing job with love and tenderness, Thank you for looking after our animals.... it is our duty..... long may you continue. God Bless.....
I love doing it - it's no duty, just something I like doing which makes me feel good about myself.
Hope Riki and her precious little babies get better soon💗😘😊
Excellent vid as always Meg. I just know all 3 of them will be fine now you’ve nursed them so beautifully.x
I love the way that they grab on to everything. God bless you for all that you do. 💜🙏💜🙏💜🙏💜
Watching these gorgeous, gorgeous creatures being rescued and treated and brought back to health is fantastic therapy for me. I have always liked bats, now I love them to bits and pieces. I can't thank you enough for the work you do, although I bet the work is massively rewarding anyway. It looks it anyway.
I'm so glad you were able to rescue them before all three died of maggots or more likely dehydration. You do such good work with these creatures, and so caring. I have learned so much about Bats since subscribing to your videos.
You are doing God’s Work. God Bless You!
- Love from Washington, D.C.
Boy! What a big catch = what a bigger job than usual. Beautiful mom and babies; so glad you are there to help them. Peace and long life to you all, Meg and batties.
What an amazing beautiful job you did caring for these sweet creatures who if not stuck on fence would have suffered such terrible pain and death. You are so kind and knew exactly what to do. I was mesmerized by this and the momma was so calm. Bless you💕💖🙏💖💕
Good luck to this little family. Thanks Meg 🌸
Thank you for saving such wonderful and beautiful bats.
Bats that are this big always look like they have similar eyes to that of a small dog.
An artificial dog, because man-made dogs are bred to be cuter, so their eyes are obnoxiously large.
@Thatoneguy chihuahua’s: am I a joke to you?
@@fioafionawright8604 yes. Yes they are.
@@thatoneguy7451 dogs arnt man made? Sure humans bred them but nature made them
@Nevermore Dogs are from nature, but today there’s more man made breeds than natural breeds.
The bats thin skin is absolutely beautiful. It looks really elegant.
I'm really happy knowing that there's people out here willing to help such creatures.
Not to mention, how well you do at it. Softly speaking to the babies and mum. It's nice seeing such gentle tenderness. :>
Thanks Adrianna. Are you new to my channel?
Welcome to Megabattie.
I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first.
I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
If you want to find further videos of a particular bat, just search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/name of bat
Cats learn REAL fast that fluids help.
Making the fluids warm helps a ton. And extra affection and treats for after.;)
I hate to tell you this, but knives are not involved in the design of a spork.
Lol
@@LAkadian Well, he was the cat who would eat bar soap and lick lightbulbs (only when they were off!) so one never did quite know what was going on in that fuzzy little noggin of his.
@@HarryVoyager Gotcha. I had a dog who would eat electrical lines and repeatedly shock himself and almost die, so I get it. Your kitteh might have actually been smarter! Lol
Such a kind gesture, to save such an amazing creature. What you are doing to rescue the bats is a wonderful thing. God bless you in all your efforts.
She is an angel for helping the animals. This is how humans should take care of animals.
I'm no angel. It's the wrong term.
I like caring for bats. This is just something I do.
Thank GOD for people like you MAY GOD BLESS YOU
Twins! How wonderful!! I hope Riki recovers and will accept her babies back. Thank you for rescuing this precious family.
Maggots be gone!!
It’s incredible how calm the mom is. Are flying foxes trusting by nature?
No, they're not naturally trusting - she seemed calm because she had a head injury. If a wild animal seems "tame", it generally means they are very unwell.
@@TheTillmanSneakerReview
i wouldn't say its necessarily how close they live to us, wild mice live in our houses but they aren't tame or trusting! and though wild animals can become used to humans, like the sparrows my mum feeds nearly knock at her door at grain time, that doesn't mean they're comfortable with humans catching or handling them - they're still wild.
also just to clarify, a street dog is completely domesticated - all dogs are domesticated animals, because they've been bred to live with and get along well with humans. are you thinking about tameness?
also while you could feasibly call a dingo a 'wild dog' (although it seems more like a feral subspecies of domestic dogs, ie a genetically domestic animal but would need to be tamed to get used to humans), a coyote is not a wild dog - its a different species.
The Tillman Sneaker Review You’re confusing “domesticated” with “domestic” here. All dogs are domesticated.
Wow I am so impressed with her knowledge of these beautiful creatures. She has the patience of a saint. I couldn’t believe her incredible patience when picking those maggots off of the mom. I love her soothing and calm voice. People like her are a blessing to the world spreading kindness and healing. Bless her!
LOl I'm not really a patient person but the bats have taught me patience.
All animals are precious in their own unique way
Thank you for you kindness and effort
Thank you for helping these creatures, you’re so good and calm with them.
We humans are taking over their habitats, we all need to help saving them, in fact saving all animals. Human population increasing without any bounds.
It’ll level out at around 9 billion.
Without any bounds and quickly increasing without compassion...Makes me so angry.
@@DebyNieto-kq2ci I feel the same my friend.

Sweet, good little mama. Thank you so much for rescuing that beautiful little family. ❤️
Meg, a good outcome here, which seems very likely right now, has got to make up for a lot of the previous losses. Saving the twins is downright heartwarming, especially considering one of them was doomed to fall off eventually! Hopefully Mom will come out of her confusion as well, making this a triple win! Good job on the names as well, perfectly suitable. If this one doesn't put a smile on your face you are not human! Thank you once again for what you do for these fascinating little critters!

Oh Meg, I'm so glad you got them. You have a double portion there. 💕
The world needs more people like this lady. Thank you for showing people that all creatures matter... except maggots
Nah, the world needs more people who do what I do probably, but not more people like me. I can't imagine a whole lot of Megs running around. One is enough for me - after all, I have to live in her brain and endure the more crazy aspects of her character; a whole lot more Megs would make the world a very scary place.
