- Statler, an Indian flying fox, was born at a zoo in 1987. Since then, he's moved from facility to facility. For many years, he was kept in a small space and used for "education." When he arrived at Bat World Sanctuary in 2018, his caretakers made sure he’d have a happy and peaceful retirement.

Dear Statler passed away in July 2021 at the age of 34. He was preceded in death by his roost mate Chessie earlier that month.
So glad that they got to live out their final years unstressed, well fed, and loved.
Sad news - but I am very happy these boys did not spend their last years in what ever misery they escaped. Bats are beautiful creatures.
I am sad to hear that, but was going to happend. I am very glad he was able to live 2 or 3 years in such calm, nice and loving place. He looked so caring.

Statler passed at the age of 34 but I bet his last few years with his caregiver were the BEST years of his life. He crossed the rainbow bridge knowing he was loved and cared for!!!!! Love it!!!!

This poor guy probably struggled for food and warmth all his life, now in his golden years is gorging like a king in a warm palace and being cared for by warm hands. Having a couple old chums from the same species to "hang" with is a bonus! I hope he lives a long and "fruitful" life.

There's many different ones out there. Some can be mean when there's a group of them, or afraid when they are alone. Some have very strange sounds coming from them that sounds out of this earth.
He passed unfortunately and the incredible age of 34 but it makes me happy seeing how good he was treated and that unlike the other places he was kept at(which he was abused) he was actually being loved and taken care of here. It truly is heart warming❤️

This old batty passed away back in July. He was sleeping on his carers arm and he passed away peacefully, being stoked and loved.

I worked for a bat sanctuary in Austin many years ago. SO rewarding. Especially teaching people who think bats are creepy and scary, that they are actually loving, beautiful and kind 💜

To be completely honest, “scary” or “deadly” doesn’t fit the bat’s description, these poor dog wyverns are so misunderstood. Whatever the case, I love these puppies with dragon wings.
Nobody misunderstands fruit bats. They're pretty universally loved. Even people that are creeped out by bats admit they're adorable flying puppies.

Geribatric😂- When I walk to the beach at dusk the bats come out and catch insects on the fly. They are the most interesting mammals, and now I know that some like to snuggle, and the older ones have infirmities of old age just like humans, and some just enjoy life with their buds in the bat cave.🦇

I’m a retired Navy Officer and a retired federal wildlife law enforcement officer. I’ve seen more than my share of man’s evil or dark side. People,who care for animals give me hope. While I’ve always enjoyed seeing bats in the wild, I’d have never believed that a bat could “cuddle. Regardless, I’m so appreciative of people who take the time to care for those animals who can no longer care for themselves.

Flying foxes are amazingly cuddly. Just don't pet them on the back. I made that mistake once while handling a flying fox that my friend's family rescued from their yard during a storm. She (my friend's little sister named her Luna) chirped loudly and then tried to bite me. She immediately made amends by licking my fingers. Altogether, the flying fox moniker is spot-on, because they are indeed like little foxes with wings. The only real difference is that they eat fruit instead of small critters.

Biggest issue is rabies but even that is pretty small. They live in our palm trees.
But ours are tiny.
I do not have any issues with bats themselves, it is that awful disease rabies. Great animals otherwise.
@@judigrumm7190 not just rabies, problem is bats are "supercarriers" and most viruses and bacteria they carry don't actually affect them much due to their extremely adaptive immune systems. Hence why the "covid from bats" theory has so much traction in the scientific community - virus is in bat, bat and human don't notice, human eats bat, virus spreads throughout human population because the entire time while in the bat the virus was improving reproductive capabilities, "trying" (not conciously) to affect the bat. By the time such a zoonotic virus reaches a human by ingesting or being bitten by a bat, if it doesn't kill the human within a reasonable timeframe, it will spread extremely fast.
This is not all bad tho, and the adaptive immune system of bats is being studied in an attempt to develop treatments for autoimmune diseases such as AIDS.

...and yet humans fail to treat the unborn human babies with similar kindness, or the elderly, and the mentally, emotionally, and developmentally disable with the same kind of kindness that is being shown towards the bat.
So so so so so so heart-warming.
I also took care of a cat which is completly deaf and almost blind but she is the most thankful living beeing. 💜💜
I’ve never understood how bats are associated with horror and monsters. They’re literally so adorable
Easy, the adorable ones are the Foxes. The ones that eat insects can look scary, especially in the dark. Add to that them being nocturnal and often carry Rabies = monsters.
Rabies is no joke and especially before the injections, being close to bats was like playing Russian Roulette..
I promise theyre not too cute when you get woken up by one flying around your room

Awww...so sad to hear he passed away 😞. What a noble and enriched life he led in his later years. I can see him flying alone majestically in bar heaven. RIP kind soul.
