I did this and it worked fantastically for 9 months (lost 70 lbs, got a new job , picked up new hobbies, etc), but it worked so well that near the end I forgot the reasons why I was doing any of it, and my mind slowly went back to my old routines (sleeping late, eating less healthy, embracing escapism). Had to find this video in my likes to remember again, so gonna restart but this time actually jot down the tips in a journal to keep focused.
@@hafeezhmha Things are still going alright for the most part, but life has gotten a lot more difficult so its been hard to keep up with the methods provided as of recently (like getting enough sleep or meditating every day). I also should have mentioned in the original comment that this video wasn't the only thing that helped, but was more like a prerequisite to even attempting to use many of the self-help tips across the channel, and that I've picked up through my own research. Curbing my bad habits required mindfulness, actually being present in the moment, to catch myself doing them and correct as needed, which is what the video helped me with. Sleep and meditation are the two most important things that keep me off autopilot and able effectively use any self-help techniques. When I'm on autopilot, even though I'm aware of the best practices to achieve whatever goals I have, I'm much more likely to supress, forget, or completly ignore them. So right now I'm trying to get my schedule back in order so I can get enough sleep and start meditating again.
This might be a bit preachy, but physically putting your phone/computer in a completely different room and locking them there in the evening can work wonders, maybe close enough to hear If someone calls
@@IvanIvanov-yz2yv Hey! Things are still going mostly alright! Sleep schedule isn't as consistent as I'd like but still massive improvement over where I was before (sleeping during the day). I use my journal to work out & breakdown most of my problems / stressors now and have felt kinda unstoppable since the year started. Been going to the gym and cooking for myself consistently for the past few months as well allowing myself to fail at/experience more things. I don't meditate as much anymore but using my journal daily has helped keep me off autopilot more often. There are still slumps and days where I just don't wanna do anything, but I've learned to be easier on myself, take everything a day at a time, and just keep things rolling as much or as little as I can.
I only recently started watching Dr K's vids like a few weeks ago and I just wanna say that the AoE healing really does wonders. Of course, you can't always take everything in the videos directly. We all don't live the exact same lives after all. But after watching some and internalising on how it could be applied to my daily life, it really has helped me to gain a bit more understanding on things that I never really had a solid grasp on like my feelings and how to handle them appropriately. This isn't related to the video, just wanna say thanks for making these vids! ^^

I hope they start doing interviews again - especially the ones with "regular" people. I know not everyone is into those super long videos so I understand why they are doing other stuff, but those interviews were what really endeared me to this channel.
Well done man, so good to see people taking action and seeing an actual difference. A word of advise from someone who's being doing this for a while (putting information into actual practice, not just watching and reading about it, like I did for most of my adult life) is to expect that you will have days, weeks even, when you feel like this whole stuff makes no sense, doesn't work and you are basically back to square one, so what's the point. That's just your nervous system trying back to it's just your nervous system trying to go back to the familiar territory and thinking patterns. Those feelings can be also triggered by simple physiological reasons like lack of sleep, dehydration or insufficient vitamin levels. You don't even have to do anything about it (although physical movement always helps a bit). Just be aware those moments will come, expect them, and wait them out when they show up. Emotional healing can be a grueling process and doesn't always feel like continuous progress.
This couldn't have come at a better time. I am a final year university student. My anxiety is running high, naturally. I have just come to realise that I have wasted 5 years of my life doing absolutely nothing. No self development. I am the same person I was 5 years ago. The realisation is killing me so of course I start to distract myself with games. I need to change. I want to change. Its high time... but the starting step is so scary.
I feel this. I’m also in my final year for my bachelors, been stressed for years. Don’t even think I can do anything with my degree and basically haven’t been able to put myself into anything other than school. Even on breaks it’s in the back of my mind. It’s hard to juggle daily chores with school let alone even having time to think about self development. I also haven’t truly processed a lot of major events that have happened. It sucks.
Yea, same here. Final year of undergraduate. I want to go to grad school, but I am running out of time to apply. Feels like the walls are closing in but I just keep distracting myself with TH-cam and video games. It is high time to change. We can do it, people. We made it this far. We found Dr. K, Dr. Peterson, and many others that have thought things through for us. We are learning how to live. We got this.

First step I did was reflection. Sitting down and reflecting and listing things I could do better. But be careful with this because you can be too hard on yourself. You can become obsessed with what your doing wrong and because hyper focused on the mistakes. Just take baby steps and reward yourself. Count the small improvements.

Before watching this, I noticed that there was a period of time recently where I was in a healthy mindset where I slept well, ate well, had healthy habits, and I saw this control, like whenever I wanted to do something that didn’t align with my healthy principles it was easy to not do it and to say No. I fell back down into an unhealthy mindset, but watching this video now i know how to do it again. Even if you work out, eat healthy, try to you fullest to be consistant, your friends will die from random heart fail, you will outgrow your childhood friend. Even if money is not a problem you will still feel the same emptiness. Same! during summer, I was in a healthy mindset. Then University started again and I went tumbling down AGAIN. For me, university is ruining me. I don't enjoy any of it and I hardly see myself pursuing a career in Business Management. That must be the reason I'm not in control.

so is this video mostly an exercise in building willpower? if so, then that is the wrong approach. it's been known for quite a while that successful people don't have "more" willpower but just better behavior and habits. in fact people who are "distracted" all the time actually have more willpower.

@@jletsgoo I don't know, I don't see much about habit formation beyond some very basics. Huberman Labs recently published a podcast episode about habit formation. Considering the importance of habit formation for therapy and that DrK is a practicing psychiatrist with a neurobiology degree this HealthyGamer video is embarassingly bad compared to that podcast episode.
It's really cool how you actually tell us in which order to do these things. Anyone can say "just eat healthier, study more and get more sleep" but explaining how these activities are connected and which ones are the easiest to start with really helps a lot.
It's wild how being kind of an outsider and connecting with people in a timezone behind yours when you're 13, will snowball into these like death-like lifestyle habits in the space of just a few years
So true, I was fine, even though I already used a lot of devices, 3 years ago but all those minutes where I wanted to be more efficient by multitasking made me so addicted to stimulation, now it's a complete disaster. Hopefully it doesn't take me another 3 years to undo that but wouldn't wonder if it actually is the case
@@Gokai_ dear god, that's what I've been doing. I try to make everything more efficient but I never realized I do it for stimulation. I've been doing it for close to 7 years now and I need it to stop. It was beneficial at one point but now it hinders my life. Edit: thank you for saying that👍🏻

Literally me. I'm 22 now and I recently got a hold on staying away from video games without having overwhelming anxiety, but only because I replaced it with other stimuli (kendama, outdoor activities, social events). But I don't think I'll be able to maintain it if I don't have people to do stuff with like I have had the past week.
For me, this kind of depression that I had was a new development for me. Growing up as a kid I was always somewhat busy and each year I had something new to do and learn, now as an adult have more freedoms to do what I want be it anime, video games, movies, and hobbies, so long as I worked to finance it. What jobs I can do are near limitless, there are no shortages of ways of making money to spend on products I want to keep me entertained, no shortage of people I can be around. I grew up in a small and quiet town and decided to live in a small city where I was going to treat as a hub to be able to travel to various places, the troubles I've faced were that I've bumped into quite a few people that unpleasant to be around only begins to describe them. I've made it back to my quiet town and now I have to relearn how to live quietly and peacefully, the problem is that I've learned that doing nothing but stay inside and away from others is quiet and peaceful, it's getting in the way of actually living. Meeting and being around others is scary and full of "what ifs"
I was about to say, if you want to be truly happy you should stay inside. People feel like the only way they can live is if they go out and spend money and load their life up with senseless responsibilities and relationships that they don’t even care for. Do what truly makes you happy inside and never feel like a loser for relaxing and enjoying your life. Are used to go out and party three days a week 24 seven VIP type stuff and the last thing I ever want to do in the past six or seven years is go out. I feel bad for people that constantly feel like they need to go out or else they are not “living their life”. The best life is spent relaxing by myself. People are a headache.
There are many reasons for this 1) Depression 2) You haven't figured out what you like. That's like a person who loves coding takes up being a doctor because it pays well. Guess what he won't be able to work since he doesn't even like the medical stuff, he's passion lies somewhere else 3)Becoming lazy is now a habit, once you make it a habit it's difficult to stop it. 4) You are afraid people will judge your work 5) You are afraid of the work not being perfect 6) You self sabotage everything because of past trauma to replicate the same traumatic experiences that happeneded to you in the past 7) You just have excuses 8) Someone is enabling you to procrastinate 9) Lastly you push yourself wayy too hard, some people are naturally more lazy than others, it's fine if you are tad bit lazy than average just don't be extremely lazy. Extreme in anything is not good.
Reading the comments and the chat in the stream I have come to a stark realisation that is pretty scary. It seems that people can be so well aware of their issues yet this can have very little to do with them overcoming them. It is almost as if the entity for knowledge of an issue and the entity of understanding your issue are separate and have no real bearing on one another. As I am writing this it has come to my attention that this was once proved by a science channel on TH-cam where a guy rode a bike that was engineered to turn the opposite way to his input and after about 3 months he got the hang of it even though he knew in theory he only had to turn left to go right and vice versa. I think this is why you get so many seemingly successful people and you ask them how they did it and they usually don't know or they offer advice in retrospect that doesn't seem to be that deep like "follow your dreams" etc.
While I do agree, I will also say that without at least identifying your issues, healing from this is impossible. At least the recognition allows you to start moving towards a particular direction of healing, and or, makes it possible to catch yourself doing some of the things that remained in your blind spots until recognition comes.
"follow your dreams" is actually pretty damn deep, even if it doesn't seem like so on first glance. Don't be too convinced about successful people. Yeah, some of them might have not encountered any really hard downphase in life and many who did surely got out of it without truly understanding what the issue was. But there are still very successful people out there, who were deeper into the shit than we are. People, who have overcome great obstacles and who also understand how. I'd argue that "follow your dreams" is a great advice. In times like today, where we are bombarded with negativity on social media and the people around us, learning to focus mentally on the things you want to achieve is probably one of the best things to increase the odds of success. Famous professor for neurology Andrew Huberman, whose podcast I highly recommend, claims that success is probably mostly determined by time spent focussing on a specific goal. Simply distracting your negative thoughts with picturing where you want to go might not be the ultimate solution for every individual, but that's something we all would benefit from a little more for sure!

Man I feel like this video talks about my problems alot. I'm repeating my first year in University. I used to have really good grades back in school, but ever since covid started I started to get lazy, and now I can't bring myself to START studying. It's come to a point where I have an exam in 1 month, but I end up procastinating for days, weeks and I'm currently 1 week away from it. The thing is I'm even not leaving my house , or playing alot because I convinced myself that I'm studying even tho I haven't done shit and have been looking at youtube or twitter the whole day. I obviously know I need to change but I feel like I have no control over myself and that sucks.
Been in that place a number of times (failed my first and 3rd Yr of uni doing that), and doing some of the things in this video really helped. Sleep, getting out the house, and trying to focus on spending time with friends/acquaintances that had good work ethics helped me most. And also trying to make the things I did a specific choice(even if it was play games all day).
Action spawns action. Don't focus on studying, focus on cleaning up a bit, making yourself something healthy to eat, taking a walk.. The studying will come if you start with the stuff that you actually do feel like doing. Just take any action, no matter how small, and it will grow. If not, start again tomorrow.
@@slendy1641 I would check if there are any study groups even if not ur subject, something that gets you going to the library and working is what helped me, friends that do it are good, but acquaintances or a group could be good too.
I'm autistic, I cannot work so I'm recieving benefits (not by choice) and have pretty bad sensory issues, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, intestinal issues, hormonal issues, cold intolerance and an unknown issue with my brain stem and much more. I do my basic daily needs every day and break up my tasks throughout the week. I can't go outside (especially in autumn and winter) for more than 30 minutes to 1 hour. If I have to go to a shopping centre for example I have to plan it and have to rest for a few days prior to gather energy for it etc. I go to the shopping centre and I start feeling sensory overloaded and then start getting pain in my brain stem, feeling painfully cold because of the Aircon and my joints and muscles hurt. I end up having a sensory overload and fatigue out. I then have to go home early so I can lay in the dark in my bed to rest up. Otherwise I end up barely able to stand up if I keep pushing myself. Do I just need more will power or discipline and am I trying to escape what needs to be done? Or am I being too hard on myself for not being able to do what others can do? I always wonder this. Great comment, I am somewhat of an autist myself (ADHD). I rarely rest, but when I do I feel rejuvinated and concentrated. If I do it too long however, I start to make the action of resting a task in itself hence not resting. I believe that my patterns are more of a result of my environment, which is outside my control. What I can do is seek out environments that are fits my neurosis. God bless
take small steps, not everyone needs the same goals. if you can even just take a walk around the block, that will help so much. also, i would focus on diet more because improving gut health is super important for autism
Notice when chat started counting, there were a few that kept counting despite what Dr K was saying. I get it, it's twitch chat, internet has memers. But these are most likely the same people that call out for help when anxiety or depressions hits hard. It's so clear to me that some people are so deep in it, that distracting themselves from really focusing is all they know.

@@alfredogonzalez9420 I think you can meme while respecting the person you're memeing over. Can't say for sure cos I've never been a memer or even written anything on twitch chat ever, just not my style. But when you complain and meme, at least you're voicing your resistance. That might be much better than what I do, which is still have resistance but just kinda swirl it around in my mind until it turns into rationalizations I trick myself with. Once it's out, maybe it's easier to see what DrK says because you realize how passionately you want to avoid the change. Also, you meme with others, and the sense of camaraderie can also be helpful I think. So if it takes a couple (not-so) funny jokes to internalize the point better, then that's what it's gonna take. To me it seems like DrK is just slightly annoyed and mostly having fun with it, doesn't feel disrespected. I mean, he voluntarily chose to interact with twitch chat as part of his work so I'd guess it would take a lot more to make him feel disrespected haha.

I'm 27 and seeing another adult trying really hard just to spread the word about mental health to as many people as possible and theeen you have funny people ignoring DR K, to me he's like a teacher that's why I see it a bit disrespectful, you know, he's not just an average streamer reacting to funny videos online, he's someone trying to help as much as possible, idk I guess we all can see it differently. but just one last thing, I have never seen dr K react like that in any other videos, he's a professional, any type of back and forth is like a nono, so him calling out chat like that, it felt like he showed his raw emotions for a moment
The thing to take into account is working in Amazon and in a Amazon warehouse. That places sucks the living soul out of you, I worked there for close to a year before quitting and finding somewhere else. He definitely needs to work somewhere else where he doesn’t feel like a machine all the time, and feels more human and also with good benefits. I can see where he is coming from when it comes for his mind to work one hour before he his mind has had enough. I was like that near the tail end of me working there until I worked as a Delivery Driver for a Charity Organization and i love coming to work every morning there.
Andrew Huberman has a very good point about the controlling the mind concept, the body isn't disconnected of it, and when you can't control the mind with the mind itself you have to look to the body, and he explains a lot of tools that will directly affect how out of control the mind is, especially sleep and light.
It's really incredible how nowadays is so common to be constantly glued to screens all the time, and how the mind reacts when you try to take that away... Sometimes I take the advice and just go out without my phone, and I start talking to myself A LOT, and I really enjoy it too. I used to do it all the time when I was younger but now my thoughts are always drowned in constant stimuli. Thinking about stuff is so helpful too, when you accept it. Sometimes I realize what I'm doing wrong, and unlike some of my friends who hate that and just silence it with memes and music, I work with myself and have looong conversations out loud, alone. I realize that for me it helps to put my thoughts into words instead of just a nebulous thing in my mind, and sometimes I come out of those sessions with a plan on what to do moving forward. YET, I still loose to my mind from time to time, and just stare at youtube and twitch all day. This video laid out a cool plan to follow and makes it easy to understand too, I'm definitely trying this out.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that does this. I also like to have long monologues with myself and have been doing it for years, it even got to the point that I started making up stories with my own original characters in one big universe, and I actually use these as bedtime stories instead of being on my phone at 3am (I mean, I still do that 80% of the time, but that's why I watched this video lol so now I'll make sure to keep it in check) And the whole thinking about stuff helping clear your head is SO true. I've changed so much as a person because of this, it's helped me discover my passions, identity, and even what I want to do with my future. (The internet helped a lot too, but thinking about how everything applied to me and my life is what really made it click)
I do it too, it is so good honestly. It cleares my mind. Glad there are others that do it. One time I was on my computer playing games without an actual reason, just to cope something that was stuck in my head, but I wasn't feeling well at all by doing that. So I got up and went outside in my garden and I started talking about that thought stuck in my head. Got back home and felt relieved.

I quit smoking four years ago using sunflower seeds. I was surprised to hear you bring it up, since I don't think it's very well-known. Chewing on sunflower seeds all day made the first couple weeks 100x easier.
Probably because I spend more time collecting inspirational and motivational quotes in Pinterest rather than actually getting my shit together 🙂 Like seriously, I would be scrolling in 12 in the midnight and be like "That is so deep and true" and then just be dead inside the next day.

Just wanna say I've been watching your videos for about 2 hours now and just by watching Why Finding Purpose Is SO HARD Today, How to Start to Find Purpose in Your Life, and this one has already helped me so much. First video that was recommended that I watched was why therapy sucks for men which is kinda repelling but I'm glad I clicked it. I've been in a limbo for years now where whenever I thought of a negative thought of my past it would stack on top of each other until I would go through regret > depression > soullessness > acceptance. then once a single minor regret would occur it would happen all over again with 1 extra regret and so forth. Now I know these videos won't solve my issue in a day. And I know there's still many more challenges to come. But what I did get from this video that really caught my attention was. "You don't control your mind. Your mind controls you" which is one of the key factors I never knew or took into consideration. I always thought I was just in a battle with myself. But knowing that I was letting my mind take the wheel with me in the backseat. Thank you, this helped so much. And now to watch You have no idea who you are. : )
@@clkgtr12 I got into a good rhythm for a nice 2 weeks straight after the comment. But ended up falling back into the same circle again. Which was completely expected. As a whole I believe I haven't changed anything at all in a month. But I did learn this time from the previous depression phase is that you're more vulnerable to letting your mind control you when you're sad. Kind of like an impenetrable wall. Hopefully I'm more prepared for the next time.
This has been a major problem for me through most of my life. I found myself often struggling to get what I knew I had to do such as ; study in school, work, take care of my body and so on. I just want to thank Dr K and everyone involved this was such a eye opening for me, I haven't finished the video but I feel much more complete as now I know what I need to do. I always tough I had depression and often beat myself for not being productive so worsen my vision about myself so I FEEL like I had it but since I was a child I was much more hard working, sociable, I liked to help others always so very often I look at those times and felt worse about it. This video has been a blessing I want to also thank everyone working on making this a better world by first working on ourselves keep strong guys ! I will just say RE: the sleep thing - be careful with audiobooks. If it's too interesting, then I'll stay awake listening to them, and struggle to fall asleep just as much. You need one specifically that bores you to tears.

Fixing sleep is easier said than done for those of us with sleep disorders, which I suspect is pretty common with people with the problem mentioned-and also often overlaps with issues like ADHD.

this video makes me sad, cause it contains a lot of genuine good info, even practical stepts to what to do...and honestly they don't seem like hard things to do...but i genuinely feel like i can't do even these simplest things on my own and this demotivates and saddens me greatly it feels like it all depends on sleep giving you enough (whatever that means) willpower.... what if it doesn't? like in my case? i feel like i sleep pretty well most of the time, but having to cook for myself with no desire to? having to eat healthy things that i haven't eaten in years and don't enjoy eating? having to be phisically active which literally everytime it makes me sweaty and more aware of my bad condition and makes me feel like shit? having the desire to meditate, twenty fking short minutes, which in the end is almost like putting effort into doing nothing... the easiest stuff most humans can do... i don't feel like i can do any of it alone, not for myself, i'm painfully aware that at this point(or a long while ago and just becoming aware of it recently) i lost the battle to my brain and idk how to win it back, i feel bad most of the time so escapism is the ony thing where i feel i can relax or take my mind of the problems which often tends to overwhelm my overthinking anxious mind, so being able to make quiet in my mind with escapism is millions more imp to me/my mind than having to put, what i feel is superhuman effort (for me), in doing the millions steps out there to supposedly get better, each step coming with it's own success/fail (failing happens most of the time imo) which feeds or kills the willpower, having to do it for a unknown period of time, with no real guarantee for success.... yeah, i can go on... how do i control a mind like that? i'm genuinely lost in my own incapability to gain any semblence of control over my own damn brain... please help :'(
Frankly, and this is just my belief, if you’re happy or happiest just doing what comes natural, just live that way and don’t stress over being “better”. You’re not deterred by the supposed suffering caused by not meditating, not exercising, etc, and you’re not motivated by other peoples definition of being better either, there’s little chance of that changing. All you really need to force yourself to do is make money to live comfortably. After that’s dealt with and you still feel unhappy, then you can worry about psychological and philosophical improvements.
One bit of advice I can offer is understanding that change and practice, especially the kind you mentioned, always involves pain and some amount of difficulty. It’s actually a good sign of progress and change. Understand, you cannot change anything without hardship and being uncomfortable. It’s ok and good for you and you’ll have the chance to appreciate it later, if you trust the process. It’s real my friend. And how all of us change. We all operate under these same rules.

Ive noticed a lot of people who for instance gain a ton of weight and get very overweight don't change anything until a medical scare lights a fire under their ass and finally they change up their diet or other ways of living
Always nice when you do all the advised things save for one cause it gives you massive anxiety yet your life is still changing for the worse 10/10 would live again. No real talk, I am suffering badly. Dr. K still makes good videos for people who are having a normal struggle with life and growing up... but for anyone reading this, if this kind of advice does not seem to be helping, seek professional help. I know it might take years, or it might even ruin you completely financially, but I'd say it's probably worth it. I spend 4~ years trying self-help tricks like this to feel better. I never got better. At least in the therapy I had I felt heard for the first time. I guess I feel like venting too that I just emerged from a month long crisis. It is just a matter of time until the next one hits but at least a therapist could make time quickly to go over a emergency plan for the next time I feel like taking my life. I don't know what country you live in, internet stranger, but if you ever feel like you can't handle life anymore, just call the emergency. Up to you, but after 6 years of hell, if I would have done anything different is calling emergency a few years earlier. But always I would rationalize and freeze up. Last month was the first time, after reading up on psychology and crisis accounts, that I was convinced it was a mental breakdown I was having. They ignored me on the phone, that sent me down further, but still, do not let the chance of rejection dissuade you. If you are at that place of mental crisis, you got nothing to lose. I am in this escapism journey from past 1 year. Feeling so much frustrated & no one believes in my words. I will try this from today and update the progress weekly.
If anyone is doing this and fighting addiction one thing I think we forget is to reward ourselves we are so hard on ourselves we forget that we are human it is okay to mess up sometimes just get back on track when you mess up
the reduction in stimulus helps so much! I started to listen to music while working instead of having videos on in the background and now not only do I have an easier time using willpower, but I also learned just how effective I can get if I don't distract myself. and personally I've felt that fixing sleep/diet/getting outside/meditation/reduce stimulus aren't a list to go down, but each of them for me are options for getting better. I might not be able to fix my sleep first, but I can go for walks or do yoga, which makes it easier to fix my sleep. and which one is easier to improve at changes over time
This actually clarified why whenever I cut back on drinking alcohol I started craving tons of sweets and juices. I was drinking alot of very sugary high alcohol drinks and, while I wasn't addicted per se , needed to cut back. The snacks and juices actually helped a lot!
God bless Dr. K this is so incredibly useful I cannot even express my gratitude even if I wanted to . My brain is literally on 24/7 and I have to fight it to do stop . Once it's done I just sit there and do nothing . I feel totally exhausted mentally and feel empty . My mind has taken over and I'm unable to fight it even with all the self awareness I have . I can convince it to do something for a bit then it goes back to doing what it wants . I can pull of fasts or water fasts for days and after a while my brain goes nope can't do that find something else to do . I can't even enjoy gaming now it's just boring and empty for me. Ironically one blessing I have now is a person I'm talking to and we can talk for hours and I can get my thoughts out and just empty my mind . I literally spoke to the person I'm seeing now for 5 hours night and my mind felt lighter and cIearer . I have to dump the information from my mind into either notes on the computer or phone / journalling otherwise I just shut down and sit in silence doing nothing. The phone on the toilet or any device at the table is a substitute for good company in my mind. If you find it hard to eat by yourself, you should seek a friend to eat with and have conversation over that butternut squash soup Dr K suggests. It is especially hard for kids who graduate from high school and suddenly don’t have a natural place to gravitate to in the lunch room when they go to college.

I think not everyone knows that OCD is not only the repetition of physical actions like hand washing or perfectionism, but, for example, an obsessive search for answers to questions (existential OCD) or the constant use of Google for self-diagnosis (health OCD). For me personally the idea of not using my phone on the toilet isn't a big deal, nor is not using it while eating, I didn't start using my phone when eating until I moved out from my parents. I used to not even be on my phone on the way to school until university when I both had a smartphone (I didn't in middle school) and the train ride was >15min (in high school it was like 3min). On the other hand changing my diet and making sure to go outside every day are way more challenging. I'm a fairly picky eater and I also don't want to spend too much time or energy preparing food, so making something like that soup just seems like far too much work.
Meal prep is the way to go. Don't waste time cooking for one meal. Cook enough for 3-5 meals. Even then, it doesn't have to be hard if you have a crockpot. Most recipes that I use take 20 minutes prep time and they taste pretty damn good. I usually have 10+ meals stocked up in my freezer/fridge and all I have to do is microwave it when I get home from work. As someone who hated wasting so much time cooking, I highly recommend it.
What Kyle said. Iespecially like stews, soups, curries and anything you can bake: you can do other things while you let the heat do the cooking with most recipes of this nature. Also if you’re like me and find prepping veggies a nightmare, either buy them pre-sliced/packaged or go to a smaller brick and mortar grocer and have them cut it up for you for a tip. The only downside to cooking is cleaning up, nobody wants to do it, but meal prep instead of quick meals minimizes this too. When I feel like cooking quick/single meals, I go for steaks (30 seconds on each side on the stove, then 3-5 minutes in the oven, about 5-10 minutes prep work besides the preheating wait if you aren’t grilling them), breakfast food (bacon,eggs and buttered toast can be done in 10 minutes including prep and toaster time, faster depending on how you like your bacon), and cold cuts/deli stuff though the third option tends to be less economic.
Every time you cook it will get a little bit easier. You will have to think less about it. I recommend learning a decent knife technique and getting a big knife so that the blade can be guided by the knuckle of the hand that's holding the vegetable.
What helped me quit smoking was nicotine patches, tictacs, and just getting up and walk around the house for 5 music while having tictacs. I didnt quit cold turkey, I had cigarettes with the patches, but only like 2-3 puffs at a time. I'd put out the cigarette, and relight the same cigarette occasionally when I really felt the need for it. Some day, I went to visit family, who smokes, I had lit one up and realized that I regretted it, and gave my last pack away for good. Didn't smoke since. Been 7+ years now, and don't miss it one bit. Found it actually easier to quit than sugar. lol

The internal issues can diminish and perhaps even resolve. The virtuous cycle involves both introspection and external action, with perseverance and hard work, and the reward is a lifetime of peace and satisfaction.
This video made me realize I very well may have Idiopathic Hypersomnia, a condition where you oversleep a lot but never feel refreshed, have trouble waking up. Which is totally me setting 13 alarms over an 1 hour before I'm even supposed to wake up, and they require doing math or other activities to stop them from ringing, but I STILL have trouble waking up... Seriously, I also need to change the sounds of the alarms after a while, otherwise my brain gets used to them and is able to actively tune them out when I'm sleeping, regardless of how loud they are (my dad 2 rooms away often complains whenever it takes me too long to turn them off). I also have intense brain fog while waking up. I've been late to school and work SEVERAL times because my mind processes numbers incorrectly when I'm tired. I can't describe why I read them wrong, I just do. It's like my brain reads them as what I want them to be, instead of what they are...super frustrating It's sad, yet kinda ironic because back when I had teenage depression, I would lay in bed at night, close my eyes, and wish that I could never wake up. That I could "sleep forever". Maybe this was the closest my body could get to granting that wish.
In case someone reads the comments for more advice: # Buy organic honey and eat a spoon or two BEFORE you binge-eat ice cream, candy, or general products with processed sugar. # Always buy organic light golden or brown sugar, NOT cheap white sugar, if you use sugar in your tea, coffee, or smoothies. # If you cannot resist buying ice cream or candy, do everything in your power to spend more on organic ice cream, organic chocolate, and any other organic options of sweet treats, including fruits. # If you don't have money for those organic products, then buy your cheapest local fruits and do your best to eat fruits before you buy candy or anything harmful. # Organic apple cider vinegar is not expensive; always, always have a bottle at your place, and drink at least a spoonful or two at least once a day, every day, with warm or lukewarm water. It may taste so bad to you on the first 1 to 5 days of its consumption but it will start to taste much better, later on, I PROMISE, especially if you mix it with sea salt and/or lemon/lime. There's so much misinformation and myths surrounding apple cider vinegar. Get it right from Dr. Eric Berg's video(s) about it if you want. # Consume raw, dirty sea salt, instead of white table salt. Sea salt is typically very cheap, even from health stores. Everybody today desperately needs it for its complex components, and there's no fear of consuming too much of it because raw sea salt allows your body to send you the correct signals. If you get too much of it, your tongue and body will tell you. # As you noticed, sugar is a huge part of the problem of lots of addicts, including gaming addicts, or generally people with addictive-behavior problems. This is because sugar adds to the "overstimulation" problem. Sugar, especially processed sugar, is part of an addict's sources of overstimulation. And gradually switching to organic honey and sugar will help your body consume less sugar, because those organic sources of sucrose send the correct signals to your brain, so your brain is better able to make you feel like you've had enough or like you don't even want to consume any more sucrose. # Take high doses of vitamin D (after consulting your doctor and doing your research). And take other critical supplements like magnesium and zinc. If you do not have hyperthyroidism or its symptoms (typically thin people who feel too hot easily), then also take iodine or get it from natural sources like sea kelp. Consume an organic or your best option of fish oil every day; it includes vitamins like vitamin A of which too many people are deficient. Do not take vitamin C supplements because ascorbic acid is NOT the vitamin-C complex; vitamin-C is much more complex than ascorbic acid; instead, consume vitamin C from at least lemon or lime, if not from its other varied sources, which you should research. Deficiencies in any of the aforementioned vitamins can [easily] lead to personality disorders, psychological problems, including addictive behavior, and of course physical diseases. # Take a vitamin-K supplement to compliment the high doses of vitamin D and avoid the accumulation of calcium in the blood, which can happen if you focus on just vitamin D without vitamin K. Or, and this is the reason this is in its own separate bullet point, buy some kefir grains and make your own homemade kefir milk. Ideally, you want to consume fresh goat or sheep milk if that's accessible to you. If not, then turning organic, non-homogenized cow milk into kefir milk at home may be better for most people than avoiding dairy products completely. Also, look into the right jars to make your own fermented vegetables at home, especially turning sliced red cabbage into sauerkraut. This is because such fermented foods, like kefir and sauerkraut, especially when fermented at home, are very rich in vitamin K and countless other benefits for you, like re-populating your digestive system with good bacteria after neglecting this for years, as is the case with most modern global citizens. # This may be harder for some people but if you have health problems in your body, then do your very best to consume organic or homemade bone broth every day. Your second-best option is taking a collagen supplement. This is direly needed for everyone with health problems in today's world because collagen isn't just about pretty or young skin, and isn't just for women, as some people think; collagen is critical for your digestive system and other parts of your body, especially the internal parts, to heal. And if your digestive system heals, then the rest of you should heal very soon. It also will stop making you crave things that are bad for you. # If you consume caffeine daily, in the form of coffee or tea, then start to gradually reduce it until you're able to go for at least two or three days consuming zero caffeine. This is because daily consumption of caffeine, even in smaller doses, can lead to adrenal fatigue, low-quality sleep, chronic stress that incites you to find comfort in food or to escape by playing games. # If you want to find evidence of the benefit of everything I mentioned above, then you may need to spend dozens of hours of research in "functional medicine" and/or "integrative medicine," which are fundamentally different from the conventional medicine and palliative healthcare that you receive from 99% of the doctors and GPs around the world today. To focus your research and make it more relevant to you, which means that you're going to be more likely to actually keep reading or listening, add relevant keywords. For example, you can search for "ADHD functional medicine." # After sorting out your sleep, nutrition, and body to a certain extent, sorting out your mind, psychology, or soul will probably be necessary if you do not want to relapse after some time. Some psychological problems, like self-hatred, may actually need to be sorted out [before] a person can care enough to sort out their sleep and nutrition. Either way, as mentioned in this video, meditation and yoga can help. However, meditation and yoga may never give meaning to your life. Life meaning is a much higher level of mental or spiritual wellness. Most secular people today find meaning in service to others. HealthyGamerGG, for example, found great meaning in life by helping so many gamers who are destroying their lives or failing at work, school, or social life. Normal doctors or practitioners of "evidence-based medicine" may say that there's no proof for some of the things I mentioned, but proof requires research, research requires money, those who have money typically seek profit, and there's a lot more profit in drugs than organic honey or apple cider vinegar; more importantly, a lot of it works for me and others, regardless of what the "approved" medical literature says. This is great stuff and I really need to fix this in my life. Some notes: - Getting control of my mind is something I've been really struggling with for a long time 🙁very happy to see a video that addresses it directly. - Not the same situation, but my work and personal life situations allow me to get away with things to some degree, and my mind always pounces and takes advantage of that to get out of being productive and on time, and that can lead to bigger disasters later on. - Don't know about the yoga stuff... may not be for me. But the general concept of sattva seems good and something I should aspire to. - Sleep is essential indeed. And even more essential than I already realized. Can't describe how many days I just wasted by staying up way too late and not getting enough sleep. The next day seems to just crumble by itself, and then I stay up again and repeat the cycle. Going to bed is hard indeed, when nobody forces me to. I really need to prioritize sleep. (Writing this at 3 am btw) - My diet is not too bad, I eat more veggies and fruit and try to avoid unhealthy foods; in the process of losing some weight. I gave up sugary cola many years ago (for preventative health reasons), but I do drink coke zero all the time, and some sugar-free/low-sugar energy drinks fairly often. With more sleep I will most likely eliminate the need for energy drinks and hopefully reduce the caffeine craving. Not sure how bad coke zero is (compared to seltzer), but I'm also trying to switch to sparkling water, especially after midnight. - Getting out - I probably need to do that more. Exercise too. - No devices in the toilet - this one kinda hurts. He's talking about 5 or 10 minutes - HAHAHAHAHA, as if I only wasted so little time that way. Yep, gotta get it under control. - No devices while eating - hmm, does it make a big difference? Sounds like mindful eating, anyway I should give it a try, shouldn't be too hard. - "Sorry we're not going to play a video game right now" - delayed gratification, gotta practice it more.
Hey Dr. K, I’ve been watching your videos for more than 6 months now. In that time I’ve grown more than I have in the last 30 years (I’m 31). I wish I would have been taught all this kind of stuff from an early age. I have 2 kids and both are under 3. Do you have any recommendations on the best ways and/or ages to teach children how to figure out how to understand themselves and pursue their interests early in life so they can get to enjoying it sooner?
As somebody who got neglected by my parents in early life, and suffered the consequences all my life, I think that one of the most important things to teach a small child is social skills. Preferably before going to school that may be full of bullies.

Food that inspire calm and equilibrium. I take a cup of tea, coffee or mostly hot chocolate every time I study. And it help me getting started. Hot chocolate give me energy and the taste give me some bliss that replenish my will. Also I don’t study if I feel unrest to avoid burn out. Instead I make hours of preparation in advance. Get enough sleep, clean up my room, make my desk a nice place, take a shower, eat well and turn on good music. It’s like when I play The Sim. Fulfill my every basic need so that I can stay study at ease for the longest possible.
19:20 There's multiple places I've worked that didn't allow breaks unless you were a minor or addicted smoker. So I'd be working 11 or 12 hours straight while my co-workers got collectively 20-40 minutes paid break. Breaks aren't mandatory where I'm at.

These are all good, I've been practicing this more or less all my life. My challenges is with dealing with other people and the lack of opportunities that seem to have disappeared in the last decade.
So the answer to the question "how to get willpower" is, in essence, eat healthy, sleep well, meditate (or "take time for yourself") and move your body :/ Literally what every Doc says when it comes to mental health. This does not work for me. I actually went to the gym three times a week and had a healthy diet for 2 years but gaining the willpower to do all that was as hard on the first day as it was after a year of doing it. There was never a habit formed for some odd reason. And I tried to change stuff a bit here and there, hoping I would finally make it click in my mind but it never happened. At some point I gave up, which felt great to not put that pressure on me all the time. Then I got lazy and fat and here I am :D
@@quantumspark343 I think that strongly depends on what kinda person you are. A friend of mine started doing what Dr K advised here and it worked out for him. He is a changed person just by going for a run every other day. That baffles and saddens me at the same time.
Hmmm…the main topic is to do these things to help with willpower generation. But makes me wonder two things: 1) is it possible the willpower sink is still larger than the willpower generated? Thus, despite doing the right things, you still have negative willpower generation rate and therefore led to burnout? 2) is it possible to have excessive willpower and no outlet for it? If that’s the case, what happens to a person? If there’s no place to direct it’s use, what happens? Since this is more health/biology than physics, excessive amounts of a substance can be harmful or lead to health issues. Too much meat can lead to gout, for example. So, is it possible that too much willpower could lead to its own type of unhealthiness? I did the same things and also fell flat. After 2ish years of contemplating why, I’ve decided it’s because the work I do does not feel valuable and thus becomes a willpower sink. Not having a plan or understanding of goals or desires for my own life (aka, having ambitions) also led to burnout as I didn’t really have anywhere to put that willpower. It turned into anxiety and depression. Kinda like pumping too much air into a closed box. It increases internal pressure and generates heat which too much causes material stressing. Not saying this is a solution as I’m still trying to figure out an answer too.
This is quite interesting. I think a possible explanation, for why the concept of Gunas works is, is how we learn to interpret things. For Example: The vegetable chips, that are currently next to me, would probably be seen as Tames. This would be, because chips are associated with sitting on the couch, or watching a movie. So less active activities. And you could probably do this for every object that exists out there. A camera or microphone, for me, would belong to Rajas. They are something active, since they are used to interact with people and create content or videos. So i see how this method can be used to check if you interpret something positive or negative for your live.
Mind you, if you are a gal, you might find that you subconsciously associate ALL foods with not being active. And if you do that - let's just say that's not a good idea. It's the kind of thing that can lead to anorexia. Or when the foods are calculated based on calories alone - so you get someone ordering salad after a hike, which is also a bad idea. And if it so happens that you get diarrhea from eating leafy greens, obviously don't eat those either and get your fiber from other sources that aren't leaves. Because yes, that happens sometimes. There are people who have digestive sensitivities specific to leaves (and sometimes apricots for some reason).
Being stuck is the worst feeling. Currently I'm unraveling and digging through TH-cam to help because I can't afford therapy but I just really want to move on from this point of my life.

Anyone who takes up seltzer and struggles with less flavor, try a 50/50 orange juice and seltzer. My favorite pairing is with a peach flavor. Edit: Seriously it will change your life Edit: With the selzer you finish whats left in the can and it gets you acclimated to the difference in flavor over time, pro tip drink it fast for good "scrape" factor.
I've never really enjoyed carbonated drinks, but my flat-mates went keto and use sugar free flavorings. There are a lot available on the market, including sugar free copycats of many popular sodas.
here's something that worked for me, not sure if it'll work for others but I'll mention it anyway I diminished my craving for sugar by switching what I drank during the day at work. I started doing really strong green tea (coffee makes me too jittery) where I just leave the teabag in the entire time I was drinking it and having one or two cups of that per day with nothing added. I was just doing it to get caffeine and water in my system so I wasn't worried about taste, but over time I started to enjoy it, it has almost a clean taste if that makes sense, and my teeth felt nicer not having sugar on them all day. That started a positive feedback loop where I was satisfied with a lot less sugar in other foods and I even started having desserts with more mild tastes.
I would also try Nuun electrolyte tablets. They add fruit flavor and even increase the carbonation a little (or will add effervescence to regular water) and they have zero sugar and less than 1 net carb per tablet. I have found them to be crucial to my water intake as I don't normally enjoy drinking water.
I experience insane improvement in long dostance vision, spending 2 weeks outdoors with next to no phone use (camping) and being outside of the tent all day and evening. It 100% works.

From a Greek/Mediterranean diet as far as breakfast goes, you could try tachini and honey. Tachini is basically a paste or a cream that comes from sesame. There's no sugar in it, and you can eat a sandwich with tachini, honey, blueberries, and nuts for breakfast. It'd delicious, it's healthy. Minus the blueberries, all the above, that's the norm breakfast for older people. One of the reasons Greeks live close to a 100. Also, there are variations of it. Like tachini with cocoa, you eat it like peanut butter, or by itself or with jam.
Every video that comes out, The title always puts me on blast before I even know it. But I'm grateful because watching it helps me get through whatever it is I'm dealing with.
If only they knew watching too many of these videos is a form of escapism. If you've been subbed for 6 months and watch his videos regularly, its time to change things up my friend. consider this a wake up call.
The more I learn about being healthy, emotionally, physically, and mentally, it becomes more evident that getting enough and good quality sleep and a good diet is the common denominator.
I think in Western terms these two approaches (change the contents of the mind vs. control the mind by action) are similar to idealism vs. materialism. You can start by changing the contents of the mind, and the reality will follow. You can start by changing the reality through action, and the mind will follow. These are like two handles on the same steering wheel. Sometimes it's more handy to use one, sometimes the other. The opposite handle changes position anyway.
+1 on the smoking cessation thing. I had a buddy who wanted to quit smoking, and he used his grandfather's method: switch to chewing tobacco first, so he could stop the going outside part of the habit, then switch to sunflower seeds to replace the dip. Brilliant to take it one step at a time. It's not an internet comment without the awful part though: said friend's brother once took a blind drink of my buddy's ice tea cup from McDonald's. Except, it was spit from the dip. You're welcome.
I agree with a lot of this. Mental control can be improved through physical changes. However, I think that you need to look into nutrition more before suggesting these things. The thing is, a lot of what you're suggesting is an improvement over fast food or chips, but it isn't actually an optimal or even good diet. Fiber is not necessary for most people, the intestines change how they process food based on the presence of fiber so if you don't eat it, you don't need it. These sort of diets are a trap that many people fall into when they don't research dietetics in their entirety; even many registered dieticians preach this because it is what they learn in their classes (which are sponsored by agriculture companies specializing in products that the students are taught to erroneously recommend).
While I agree with you, I am pretty sure he's talking to the people who eat potato chips and 7up all day long, but I agree he should have just said "find some evidence based dietary information and make some improvements in the foods you consume."
I would start with a question why are we bored, what is boredom and why do we want to escape it? In my opinion it is the most marvelous thing that can happen to us. Why? If not boredom, we would not be humans. Your creativity and problem-solving is what is determined by boredom and what led us to today's technology. Remeber, you have a great tool in your hand 👏
just to add to the conversation, best thing i ever did in my life was cancel my phone plan and throw my phone under the mattress. Since then iv'e been far more focused, and happier, the only time i ever pull it up is to use the timer for a 15min power nap or gps when needed. Best decision I ever made in my life
I have the opposite problem. I show up. Work hard. All I care about is working hard, and being a good employee. The competition teams up, and after showing up every day I’m pushed out of any job that I actually am motivated to keep. Otherwise I would still be working there. I’m more than capable of keeping a job, working full time, and supporting myself but OTHER PEOPLE, and NOT myself are sabotaging my success.
When dr k said at the end that "no devices on toilet" is the advanced technique to do after you meditate everyday, my brain said "oh thank God does that mean i don't need to do that one yet? I can just meditate every day instead?" My brain out here fighting for its life tryna rationalize.
Yes, you can avoid doing that. Go meditate every day and feel like youre exploiting a cheat code to avoid putting away the device. Your mind will think its clever, and it'll be falling in your trap for once.
Was gonna leave a comment saying that Dr K shouldn't have put those in the advanced section because people would use that as an out. Honestly though no devices while eating, or shitting means you can end up with even more time with those devices anyways since you end up doing both more efficiently/quickly while still getting in those little contemplative moments to pause and think on the current struggles of the day.
This is weird because if you are in a dull and kinda blurry moment in your life, you get bored and instinctively move to a more active and dynamic community or atmosphere, you get tired and get to a balanced state because of this. But I feel like at some point the cycle repeats itself.

I’d really love to know if there’s any information on how to apply this with adhd & anxiety in particular involved. I think these will be helpful in building my willpower, but both conditions make it difficult for me to be in the moment and find motivation. @@Jordan64852 It probably works with flowing water too due to the amount of visual stimulation. I know I like a good, fast flowing creek when I'm out on a nature walk. Especially if there are plenty of rocks and detritus in the way to break up the flow and draw your attention to patterns elsewhere.

I did this and it worked fantastically for 9 months (lost 70 lbs, got a new job , picked up new hobbies, etc), but it worked so well that near the end I forgot the reasons why I was doing any of it, and my mind slowly went back to my old routines (sleeping late, eating less healthy, embracing escapism). Had to find this video in my likes to remember again, so gonna restart but this time actually jot down the tips in a journal to keep focused.

@@hafeezhmha Things are still going alright for the most part, but life has gotten a lot more difficult so its been hard to keep up with the methods provided as of recently (like getting enough sleep or meditating every day). I also should have mentioned in the original comment that this video wasn't the only thing that helped, but was more like a prerequisite to even attempting to use many of the self-help tips across the channel, and that I've picked up through my own research.
Curbing my bad habits required mindfulness, actually being present in the moment, to catch myself doing them and correct as needed, which is what the video helped me with. Sleep and meditation are the two most important things that keep me off autopilot and able effectively use any self-help techniques. When I'm on autopilot, even though I'm aware of the best practices to achieve whatever goals I have, I'm much more likely to supress, forget, or completly ignore them.
So right now I'm trying to get my schedule back in order so I can get enough sleep and start meditating again.
This might be a bit preachy, but physically putting your phone/computer in a completely different room and locking them there in the evening can work wonders, maybe close enough to hear If someone calls

@@IvanIvanov-yz2yv Hey! Things are still going mostly alright! Sleep schedule isn't as consistent as I'd like but still massive improvement over where I was before (sleeping during the day). I use my journal to work out & breakdown most of my problems / stressors now and have felt kinda unstoppable since the year started. Been going to the gym and cooking for myself consistently for the past few months as well allowing myself to fail at/experience more things. I don't meditate as much anymore but using my journal daily has helped keep me off autopilot more often. There are still slumps and days where I just don't wanna do anything, but I've learned to be easier on myself, take everything a day at a time, and just keep things rolling as much or as little as I can.
I only recently started watching Dr K's vids like a few weeks ago and I just wanna say that the AoE healing really does wonders. Of course, you can't always take everything in the videos directly. We all don't live the exact same lives after all. But after watching some and internalising on how it could be applied to my daily life, it really has helped me to gain a bit more understanding on things that I never really had a solid grasp on like my feelings and how to handle them appropriately. This isn't related to the video, just wanna say thanks for making these vids! ^^

I hope they start doing interviews again - especially the ones with "regular" people. I know not everyone is into those super long videos so I understand why they are doing other stuff, but those interviews were what really endeared me to this channel.
Well done man, so good to see people taking action and seeing an actual difference.
A word of advise from someone who's being doing this for a while (putting information into actual practice, not just watching and reading about it, like I did for most of my adult life) is to expect that you will have days, weeks even, when you feel like this whole stuff makes no sense, doesn't work and you are basically back to square one, so what's the point.
That's just your nervous system trying back to it's just your nervous system trying to go back to the familiar territory and thinking patterns. Those feelings can be also triggered by simple physiological reasons like lack of sleep, dehydration or insufficient vitamin levels.
You don't even have to do anything about it (although physical movement always helps a bit). Just be aware those moments will come, expect them, and wait them out when they show up. Emotional healing can be a grueling process and doesn't always feel like continuous progress.
This couldn't have come at a better time. I am a final year university student. My anxiety is running high, naturally. I have just come to realise that I have wasted 5 years of my life doing absolutely nothing. No self development. I am the same person I was 5 years ago. The realisation is killing me so of course I start to distract myself with games. I need to change. I want to change. Its high time... but the starting step is so scary.
I feel this. I’m also in my final year for my bachelors, been stressed for years. Don’t even think I can do anything with my degree and basically haven’t been able to put myself into anything other than school. Even on breaks it’s in the back of my mind. It’s hard to juggle daily chores with school let alone even having time to think about self development. I also haven’t truly processed a lot of major events that have happened. It sucks.
Yea, same here. Final year of undergraduate. I want to go to grad school, but I am running out of time to apply. Feels like the walls are closing in but I just keep distracting myself with TH-cam and video games. It is high time to change. We can do it, people. We made it this far. We found Dr. K, Dr. Peterson, and many others that have thought things through for us. We are learning how to live. We got this.

First step I did was reflection. Sitting down and reflecting and listing things I could do better. But be careful with this because you can be too hard on yourself. You can become obsessed with what your doing wrong and because hyper focused on the mistakes. Just take baby steps and reward yourself. Count the small improvements.

Before watching this, I noticed that there was a period of time recently where I was in a healthy mindset where I slept well, ate well, had healthy habits, and I saw this control, like whenever I wanted to do something that didn’t align with my healthy principles it was easy to not do it and to say No. I fell back down into an unhealthy mindset, but watching this video now i know how to do it again. Same! during summer, I was in a healthy mindset. Then University started again and I went tumbling down AGAIN. For me, university is ruining me. I don't enjoy any of it and I hardly see myself pursuing a career in Business Management. That must be the reason I'm not in control.

so is this video mostly an exercise in building willpower? if so, then that is the wrong approach. it's been known for quite a while that successful people don't have "more" willpower but just better behavior and habits. in fact people who are "distracted" all the time actually have more willpower.

@@jletsgoo I don't know, I don't see much about habit formation beyond some very basics. Huberman Labs recently published a podcast episode about habit formation. Considering the importance of habit formation for therapy and that DrK is a practicing psychiatrist with a neurobiology degree this HealthyGamer video is embarassingly bad compared to that podcast episode.
It's really cool how you actually tell us in which order to do these things. Anyone can say "just eat healthier, study more and get more sleep" but explaining how these activities are connected and which ones are the easiest to start with really helps a lot.
It's wild how being kind of an outsider and connecting with people in a timezone behind yours when you're 13, will snowball into these like death-like lifestyle habits in the space of just a few years
So true, I was fine, even though I already used a lot of devices, 3 years ago but all those minutes where I wanted to be more efficient by multitasking made me so addicted to stimulation, now it's a complete disaster. Hopefully it doesn't take me another 3 years to undo that but wouldn't wonder if it actually is the case
@@Gokai_ dear god, that's what I've been doing. I try to make everything more efficient but I never realized I do it for stimulation. I've been doing it for close to 7 years now and I need it to stop. It was beneficial at one point but now it hinders my life.

Dang bro you got really specific there, I almost feel personally attacked. It's funny to notice how this is happening to so many different, unrelated people. People really are largely a product of their time.
Literally me. I'm 22 now and I recently got a hold on staying away from video games without having overwhelming anxiety, but only because I replaced it with other stimuli (kendama, outdoor activities, social events). But I don't think I'll be able to maintain it if I don't have people to do stuff with like I have had the past week.
For me, this kind of depression that I had was a new development for me. Growing up as a kid I was always somewhat busy and each year I had something new to do and learn, now as an adult have more freedoms to do what I want be it anime, video games, movies, and hobbies, so long as I worked to finance it. What jobs I can do are near limitless, there are no shortages of ways of making money to spend on products I want to keep me entertained, no shortage of people I can be around. I grew up in a small and quiet town and decided to live in a small city where I was going to treat as a hub to be able to travel to various places, the troubles I've faced were that I've bumped into quite a few people that unpleasant to be around only begins to describe them. I've made it back to my quiet town and now I have to relearn how to live quietly and peacefully, the problem is that I've learned that doing nothing but stay inside and away from others is quiet and peaceful, it's getting in the way of actually living. Meeting and being around others is scary and full of "what ifs"
I was about to say, if you want to be truly happy you should stay inside. People feel like the only way they can live is if they go out and spend money and load their life up with senseless responsibilities and relationships that they don’t even care for. Do what truly makes you happy inside and never feel like a loser for relaxing and enjoying your life. Are used to go out and party three days a week 24 seven VIP type stuff and the last thing I ever want to do in the past six or seven years is go out. I feel bad for people that constantly feel like they need to go out or else they are not “living their life”. The best life is spent relaxing by myself. People are a headache.
There are many reasons for this
1) Depression
2) You haven't figured out what you like. That's like a person who loves coding takes up being a doctor because it pays well. Guess what he won't be able to work since he doesn't even like the medical stuff, he's passion lies somewhere else
3)Becoming lazy is now a habit, once you make it a habit it's difficult to stop it.
4) You are afraid people will judge your work
5) You are afraid of the work not being perfect
6) You self sabotage everything because of past trauma to replicate the same traumatic experiences that happeneded to you in the past
7) You just have excuses
8) Someone is enabling you to procrastinate
9) Lastly you push yourself wayy too hard, some people are naturally more lazy than others, it's fine if you are tad bit lazy than average just don't be extremely lazy. Extreme in anything is not good.
God 6) on this list is relatable. Awful self-esteem and a compulsive need to maintain that awful self-esteem is not a fun combination.

Reading the comments and the chat in the stream I have come to a stark realisation that is pretty scary. It seems that people can be so well aware of their issues yet this can have very little to do with them overcoming them. It is almost as if the entity for knowledge of an issue and the entity of understanding your issue are separate and have no real bearing on one another. As I am writing this it has come to my attention that this was once proved by a science channel on TH-cam where a guy rode a bike that was engineered to turn the opposite way to his input and after about 3 months he got the hang of it even though he knew in theory he only had to turn left to go right and vice versa.
I think this is why you get so many seemingly successful people and you ask them how they did it and they usually don't know or they offer advice in retrospect that doesn't seem to be that deep like "follow your dreams" etc.
While I do agree, I will also say that without at least identifying your issues, healing from this is impossible. At least the recognition allows you to start moving towards a particular direction of healing, and or, makes it possible to catch yourself doing some of the things that remained in your blind spots until recognition comes.
"follow your dreams" is actually pretty damn deep, even if it doesn't seem like so on first glance. Don't be too convinced about successful people. Yeah, some of them might have not encountered any really hard downphase in life and many who did surely got out of it without truly understanding what the issue was. But there are still very successful people out there, who were deeper into the shit than we are. People, who have overcome great obstacles and who also understand how.
I'd argue that "follow your dreams" is a great advice. In times like today, where we are bombarded with negativity on social media and the people around us, learning to focus mentally on the things you want to achieve is probably one of the best things to increase the odds of success. Famous professor for neurology Andrew Huberman, whose podcast I highly recommend, claims that success is probably mostly determined by time spent focussing on a specific goal.
Simply distracting your negative thoughts with picturing where you want to go might not be the ultimate solution for every individual, but that's something we all would benefit from a little more for sure!

Man I feel like this video talks about my problems alot. I'm repeating my first year in University. I used to have really good grades back in school, but ever since covid started I started to get lazy, and now I can't bring myself to START studying. It's come to a point where I have an exam in 1 month, but I end up procastinating for days, weeks and I'm currently 1 week away from it. The thing is I'm even not leaving my house , or playing alot because I convinced myself that I'm studying even tho I haven't done shit and have been looking at youtube or twitter the whole day. I obviously know I need to change but I feel like I have no control over myself and that sucks.
Been in that place a number of times (failed my first and 3rd Yr of uni doing that), and doing some of the things in this video really helped. Sleep, getting out the house, and trying to focus on spending time with friends/acquaintances that had good work ethics helped me most. And also trying to make the things I did a specific choice(even if it was play games all day).
Action spawns action. Don't focus on studying, focus on cleaning up a bit, making yourself something healthy to eat, taking a walk.. The studying will come if you start with the stuff that you actually do feel like doing. Just take any action, no matter how small, and it will grow. If not, start again tomorrow.

I'm autistic, I cannot work so I'm recieving benefits (not by choice) and have pretty bad sensory issues, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, intestinal issues, hormonal issues, cold intolerance and an unknown issue with my brain stem and much more. I do my basic daily needs every day and break up my tasks throughout the week. I can't go outside (especially in autumn and winter) for more than 30 minutes to 1 hour. If I have to go to a shopping centre for example I have to plan it and have to rest for a few days prior to gather energy for it etc. I go to the shopping centre and I start feeling sensory overloaded and then start getting pain in my brain stem, feeling painfully cold because of the Aircon and my joints and muscles hurt. I end up having a sensory overload and fatigue out. I then have to go home early so I can lay in the dark in my bed to rest up. Otherwise I end up barely able to stand up if I keep pushing myself. Great comment, I am somewhat of an autist myself (ADHD). I rarely rest, but when I do I feel rejuvinated and concentrated. If I do it too long however, I start to make the action of resting a task in itself hence not resting.
I believe that my patterns are more of a result of my environment, which is outside my control. What I can do is seek out environments that are fits my neurosis.

Notice when chat started counting, there were a few that kept counting despite what Dr K was saying. I get it, it's twitch chat, internet has memers. But these are most likely the same people that call out for help when anxiety or depressions hits hard. It's so clear to me that some people are so deep in it, that distracting themselves from really focusing is all they know.

Can't say for sure cos I've never been a memer or even written anything on twitch chat ever, just not my style. But when you complain and meme, at least you're voicing your resistance. That might be much better than what I do, which is still have resistance but just kinda swirl it around in my mind until it turns into rationalizations I trick myself with. Once it's out, maybe it's easier to see what DrK says because you realize how passionately you want to avoid the change. Also, you meme with others, and the sense of camaraderie can also be helpful I think. So if it takes a couple (not-so) funny jokes to internalize the point better, then that's what it's gonna take. To me it seems like DrK is just slightly annoyed and mostly having fun with it, doesn't feel disrespected. I mean, he voluntarily chose to interact with twitch chat as part of his work so I'd guess it would take a lot more to make him feel disrespected haha.

I'm 27 and seeing another adult trying really hard just to spread the word about mental health to as many people as possible and theeen you have funny people ignoring DR K, to me he's like a teacher that's why I see it a bit disrespectful, you know, he's not just an average streamer reacting to funny videos online, he's someone trying to help as much as possible, idk I guess we all can see it differently.

The thing to take into account is working in Amazon and in a Amazon warehouse. That places sucks the living soul out of you, I worked there for close to a year before quitting and finding somewhere else. He definitely needs to work somewhere else where he doesn’t feel like a machine all the time, and feels more human and also with good benefits. I can see where he is coming from when it comes for his mind to work one hour before he his mind has had enough. I was like that near the tail end of me working there until I worked as a Delivery Driver for a Charity Organization and i love coming to work every morning there.
I'm so impressed at how cohesive a relationship he was able to have with chat with the no phones in toilet part. He totally read thousands of people.
Andrew Huberman has a very good point about the controlling the mind concept, the body isn't disconnected of it, and when you can't control the mind with the mind itself you have to look to the body, and he explains a lot of tools that will directly affect how out of control the mind is, especially sleep and light.
It's really incredible how nowadays is so common to be constantly glued to screens all the time, and how the mind reacts when you try to take that away... Sometimes I take the advice and just go out without my phone, and I start talking to myself A LOT, and I really enjoy it too. I used to do it all the time when I was younger but now my thoughts are always drowned in constant stimuli. Thinking about stuff is so helpful too, when you accept it. Sometimes I realize what I'm doing wrong, and unlike some of my friends who hate that and just silence it with memes and music, I work with myself and have looong conversations out loud, alone. I realize that for me it helps to put my thoughts into words instead of just a nebulous thing in my mind, and sometimes I come out of those sessions with a plan on what to do moving forward.
YET, I still loose to my mind from time to time, and just stare at youtube and twitch all day. This video laid out a cool plan to follow and makes it easy to understand too, I'm definitely trying this out.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that does this. I also like to have long monologues with myself and have been doing it for years, it even got to the point that I started making up stories with my own original characters in one big universe, and I actually use these as bedtime stories instead of being on my phone at 3am (I mean, I still do that 80% of the time, but that's why I watched this video lol so now I'll make sure to keep it in check)
And the whole thinking about stuff helping clear your head is SO true. I've changed so much as a person because of this, it's helped me discover my passions, identity, and even what I want to do with my future. (The internet helped a lot too, but thinking about how everything applied to me and my life is what really made it click)
I do it too, it is so good honestly. It cleares my mind. Glad there are others that do it. One time I was on my computer playing games without an actual reason, just to cope something that was stuck in my head, but I wasn't feeling well at all by doing that. So I got up and went outside in my garden and I started talking about that thought stuck in my head. Got back home and felt relieved.
The butternut squash soup recipe for reference: Cut squash in half, add olive oil and salt, roast in oven. Fry oil, garlic and onion in a pan. Scoop softened squash into pot with oil mixture. I quit smoking four years ago using sunflower seeds. I was surprised to hear you bring it up, since I don't think it's very well-known. Chewing on sunflower seeds all day made the first couple weeks 100x easier.

Just wanna say I've been watching your videos for about 2 hours now and just by watching Why Finding Purpose Is SO HARD Today, How to Start to Find Purpose in Your Life, and this one has already helped me so much. First video that was recommended that I watched was why therapy sucks for men which is kinda repelling but I'm glad I clicked it.
I've been in a limbo for years now where whenever I thought of a negative thought of my past it would stack on top of each other until I would go through regret > depression > soullessness > acceptance. then once a single minor regret would occur it would happen all over again with 1 extra regret and so forth.
Now I know these videos won't solve my issue in a day. And I know there's still many more challenges to come. But what I did get from this video that really caught my attention was. "You don't control your mind. Your mind controls you" which is one of the key factors I never knew or took into consideration. I always thought I was just in a battle with myself. But knowing that I was letting my mind take the wheel with me in the backseat. Thank you, this helped so much.

@@clkgtr12 I got into a good rhythm for a nice 2 weeks straight after the comment. But ended up falling back into the same circle again. Which was completely expected.
As a whole I believe I haven't changed anything at all in a month. But I did learn this time from the previous depression phase is that you're more vulnerable to letting your mind control you when you're sad. Kind of like an impenetrable wall. Hopefully I'm more prepared for the next time.

This has been a major problem for me through most of my life. I found myself often struggling to get what I knew I had to do such as ; study in school, work, take care of my body and so on.
I just want to thank Dr K and everyone involved this was such a eye opening for me, I haven't finished the video but I feel much more complete as now I know what I need to do. I always tough I had depression and often beat myself for not being productive so worsen my vision about myself so I FEEL like I had it but since I was a child I was much more hard working, sociable, I liked to help others always so very often I look at those times and felt worse about it. This video has been a blessing I want to also thank everyone working on making this a better world by first working on ourselves keep strong guys ! I wish you all the best together we can work to improve humanity itself, I'm certain of that much.

Fixing sleep is easier said than done for those of us with sleep disorders, which I suspect is pretty common with people with the problem mentioned-and also often overlaps with issues like ADHD.

it feels like it all depends on sleep giving you enough (whatever that means) willpower.... what if it doesn't? like in my case?
i feel like i sleep pretty well most of the time, but having to cook for myself with no desire to? having to eat healthy things that i haven't eaten in years and don't enjoy eating? having to be phisically active which literally everytime it makes me sweaty and more aware of my bad condition and makes me feel like shit? having the desire to meditate, twenty fking short minutes, which in the end is almost like putting effort into doing nothing... the easiest stuff most humans can do... i don't feel like i can do any of it alone, not for myself,
i'm painfully aware that at this point(or a long while ago and just becoming aware of it recently) i lost the battle to my brain and idk how to win it back,
i feel bad most of the time so escapism is the ony thing where i feel i can relax or take my mind of the problems which often tends to overwhelm my overthinking anxious mind, so being able to make quiet in my mind with escapism is millions more imp to me/my mind than having to put, what i feel is superhuman effort (for me), in doing the millions steps out there to supposedly get better, each step coming with it's own success/fail (failing happens most of the time imo) which feeds or kills the willpower, having to do it for a unknown period of time, with no real guarantee for success.... yeah, i can go on... how do i control a mind like that? i'm genuinely lost in my own incapability to gain any semblence of control over my own damn brain... please help :'(
Frankly, and this is just my belief, if you’re happy or happiest just doing what comes natural, just live that way and don’t stress over being “better”. You’re not deterred by the supposed suffering caused by not meditating, not exercising, etc, and you’re not motivated by other peoples definition of being better either, there’s little chance of that changing. All you really need to force yourself to do is make money to live comfortably. After that’s dealt with and you still feel unhappy, then you can worry about psychological and philosophical improvements.
One bit of advice I can offer is understanding that change and practice, especially the kind you mentioned, always involves pain and some amount of difficulty. It’s actually a good sign of progress and change. Understand, you cannot change anything without hardship and being uncomfortable. It’s ok and good for you and you’ll have the chance to appreciate it later, if you trust the process. It’s real my friend. And how all of us change. We all operate under these same rules.

Ive noticed a lot of people who for instance gain a ton of weight and get very overweight don't change anything until a medical scare lights a fire under their ass and finally they change up their diet or other ways of living

Always nice when you do all the advised things save for one cause it gives you massive anxiety yet your life is still changing for the worse 10/10 would live again. No real talk, I am suffering badly. Dr. K still makes good videos for people who are having a normal struggle with life and growing up... but for anyone reading this, if this kind of advice does not seem to be helping, seek professional help. I know it might take years, or it might even ruin you completely financially, but I'd say it's probably worth it. I spend 4~ years trying self-help tricks like this to feel better. I never got better. At least in the therapy I had I felt heard for the first time. I guess I feel like venting too that I just emerged from a month long crisis. It is just a matter of time until the next one hits but at least a therapist could make time quickly to go over a emergency plan for the next time I feel like taking my life. I don't know what country you live in, internet stranger, but if you ever feel like you can't handle life anymore, just call the emergency. Up to you, but after 6 years of hell, if I would have done anything different is calling emergency a few years earlier. But always I would rationalize and freeze up. Last month was the first time, after reading up on psychology and crisis accounts, that I was convinced it was a mental breakdown I was having. They ignored me on the phone, that sent me down further, but still, do not let the chance of rejection dissuade you. If you are at that place of mental crisis, you got nothing to lose. Take the chance. Good luck.

If anyone is doing this and fighting addiction one thing I think we forget is to reward ourselves we are so hard on ourselves we forget that we are human it is okay to mess up sometimes just get back on track when you mess up
the reduction in stimulus helps so much! I started to listen to music while working instead of having videos on in the background and now not only do I have an easier time using willpower, but I also learned just how effective I can get if I don't distract myself. and personally I've felt that fixing sleep/diet/getting outside/meditation/reduce stimulus aren't a list to go down, but each of them for me are options for getting better. I might not be able to fix my sleep first, but I can go for walks or do yoga, which makes it easier to fix my sleep. and which one is easier to improve at changes over time
This actually clarified why whenever I cut back on drinking alcohol I started craving tons of sweets and juices. I was drinking alot of very sugary high alcohol drinks and, while I wasn't addicted per se , needed to cut back. The snacks and juices actually helped a lot!
God bless Dr. K this is so incredibly useful I cannot even express my gratitude even if I wanted to . My brain is literally on 24/7 and I have to fight it to do stop . Once it's done I just sit there and do nothing .
I feel totally exhausted mentally and feel empty . My mind has taken over and I'm unable to fight it even with all the self awareness I have .
I can convince it to do something for a bit then it goes back to doing what it wants . I can pull of fasts or water fasts for days and after a while my brain goes nope can't do that find something else to do . I can't even enjoy gaming now it's just boring and empty for me.
Ironically one blessing I have now is a person I'm talking to and we can talk for hours and I can get my thoughts out and just empty my mind . I literally spoke to the person I'm seeing now for 5 hours night and my mind felt lighter and cIearer . I have to dump the information from my mind into either notes on the computer or phone / journalling otherwise I just shut down and sit in silence doing nothing.
It's not that I don't have will power it's just drained super fast . Now I know how to combat my mind and make it do the things I want. God bless you Dr. K.

The phone on the toilet or any device at the table is a substitute for good company in my mind. If you find it hard to eat by yourself, you should seek a friend to eat with and have conversation over that butternut squash soup Dr K suggests. It is especially hard for kids who graduate from high school and suddenly don’t have a natural place to gravitate to in the lunch room when they go to college.
I swear all of this makes a good life. If we feel good and healthy we could do/start anything, and even if we don't achieve it, we'd feel ok too.

Another topic I would like to hear from Dr. K is OCD. I think not everyone knows that OCD is not only the repetition of physical actions like hand washing or perfectionism, but, for example, an obsessive search for answers to questions (existential OCD) or the constant use of Google for self-diagnosis (health OCD). I know it's a sub-genre of anxiety and rumination that he's discussed many times before, but I'd be interested to hear his take on this particular topic.

For me personally the idea of not using my phone on the toilet isn't a big deal, nor is not using it while eating, I didn't start using my phone when eating until I moved out from my parents. I used to not even be on my phone on the way to school until university when I both had a smartphone (I didn't in middle school) and the train ride was >15min (in high school it was like 3min).
On the other hand changing my diet and making sure to go outside every day are way more challenging. I'm a fairly picky eater and I also don't want to spend too much time or energy preparing food, so making something like that soup just seems like far too much work.
Meal prep is the way to go. Don't waste time cooking for one meal. Cook enough for 3-5 meals. Even then, it doesn't have to be hard if you have a crockpot. Most recipes that I use take 20 minutes prep time and they taste pretty damn good. I usually have 10+ meals stocked up in my freezer/fridge and all I have to do is microwave it when I get home from work. As someone who hated wasting so much time cooking, I highly recommend it.

Iespecially like stews, soups, curries and anything you can bake: you can do other things while you let the heat do the cooking with most recipes of this nature. Also if you’re like me and find prepping veggies a nightmare, either buy them pre-sliced/packaged or go to a smaller brick and mortar grocer and have them cut it up for you for a tip.
The only downside to cooking is cleaning up, nobody wants to do it, but meal prep instead of quick meals minimizes this too.
When I feel like cooking quick/single meals, I go for steaks (30 seconds on each side on the stove, then 3-5 minutes in the oven, about 5-10 minutes prep work besides the preheating wait if you aren’t grilling them), breakfast food (bacon,eggs and buttered toast can be done in 10 minutes including prep and toaster time, faster depending on how you like your bacon), and cold cuts/deli stuff though the third option tends to be less economic.

Every time you cook it will get a little bit easier. You will have to think less about it. I recommend learning a decent knife technique and getting a big knife so that the blade can be guided by the knuckle of the hand that's holding the vegetable.
What helped me quit smoking was nicotine patches, tictacs, and just getting up and walk around the house for 5 music while having tictacs. I didnt quit cold turkey, I had cigarettes with the patches, but only like 2-3 puffs at a time. I'd put out the cigarette, and relight the same cigarette occasionally when I really felt the need for it. Some day, I went to visit family, who smokes, I had lit one up and realized that I regretted it, and gave my last pack away for good. Didn't smoke since. Been 7+ years now, and don't miss it one bit. Found it actually easier to quit than sugar. lol
There are sayings along these lines: “He who commands his life is truly free.” Surprisingly, by training and controlling our minds, we can overcome many fears and problems. The internal issues can diminish and perhaps even resolve. The virtuous cycle involves both introspection and external action, with perseverance and hard work, and the reward is a lifetime of peace and satisfaction.
This video made me realize I very well may have Idiopathic Hypersomnia, a condition where you oversleep a lot but never feel refreshed, have trouble waking up. Which is totally me setting 13 alarms over an 1 hour before I'm even supposed to wake up, and they require doing math or other activities to stop them from ringing, but I STILL have trouble waking up...
Seriously, I also need to change the sounds of the alarms after a while, otherwise my brain gets used to them and is able to actively tune them out when I'm sleeping, regardless of how loud they are (my dad 2 rooms away often complains whenever it takes me too long to turn them off).
I also have intense brain fog while waking up. I've been late to school and work SEVERAL times because my mind processes numbers incorrectly when I'm tired.
I can't describe why I read them wrong, I just do. It's like my brain reads them as what I want them to be, instead of what they are...super frustrating
It's sad, yet kinda ironic because back when I had teenage depression, I would lay in bed at night, close my eyes, and wish that I could never wake up. That I could "sleep forever". Maybe this was the closest my body could get to granting that wish.
In case someone reads the comments for more advice:
# Buy organic honey and eat a spoon or two BEFORE you binge-eat ice cream, candy, or general products with processed sugar.
# Always buy organic light golden or brown sugar, NOT cheap white sugar, if you use sugar in your tea, coffee, or smoothies.
# If you cannot resist buying ice cream or candy, do everything in your power to spend more on organic ice cream, organic chocolate, and any other organic options of sweet treats, including fruits.
# If you don't have money for those organic products, then buy your cheapest local fruits and do your best to eat fruits before you buy candy or anything harmful.
# Organic apple cider vinegar is not expensive; always, always have a bottle at your place, and drink at least a spoonful or two at least once a day, every day, with warm or lukewarm water. It may taste so bad to you on the first 1 to 5 days of its consumption but it will start to taste much better, later on, I PROMISE, especially if you mix it with sea salt and/or lemon/lime. There's so much misinformation and myths surrounding apple cider vinegar. Get it right from Dr. Eric Berg's video(s) about it if you want.
# Consume raw, dirty sea salt, instead of white table salt. Sea salt is typically very cheap, even from health stores. Everybody today desperately needs it for its complex components, and there's no fear of consuming too much of it because raw sea salt allows your body to send you the correct signals. If you get too much of it, your tongue and body will tell you.
# As you noticed, sugar is a huge part of the problem of lots of addicts, including gaming addicts, or generally people with addictive-behavior problems. This is because sugar adds to the "overstimulation" problem. Sugar, especially processed sugar, is part of an addict's sources of overstimulation. And gradually switching to organic honey and sugar will help your body consume less sugar, because those organic sources of sucrose send the correct signals to your brain, so your brain is better able to make you feel like you've had enough or like you don't even want to consume any more sucrose.
# Take high doses of vitamin D (after consulting your doctor and doing your research). And take other critical supplements like magnesium and zinc. If you do not have hyperthyroidism or its symptoms (typically thin people who feel too hot easily), then also take iodine or get it from natural sources like sea kelp. Consume an organic or your best option of fish oil every day; it includes vitamins like vitamin A of which too many people are deficient. Do not take vitamin C supplements because ascorbic acid is NOT the vitamin-C complex; vitamin-C is much more complex than ascorbic acid; instead, consume vitamin C from at least lemon or lime, if not from its other varied sources, which you should research. Deficiencies in any of the aforementioned vitamins can [easily] lead to personality disorders, psychological problems, including addictive behavior, and of course physical diseases.
# Take a vitamin-K supplement to compliment the high doses of vitamin D and avoid the accumulation of calcium in the blood, which can happen if you focus on just vitamin D without vitamin K. Or, and this is the reason this is in its own separate bullet point, buy some kefir grains and make your own homemade kefir milk. Ideally, you want to consume fresh goat or sheep milk if that's accessible to you. If not, then turning organic, non-homogenized cow milk into kefir milk at home may be better for most people than avoiding dairy products completely. Also, look into the right jars to make your own fermented vegetables at home, especially turning sliced red cabbage into sauerkraut. This is because such fermented foods, like kefir and sauerkraut, especially when fermented at home, are very rich in vitamin K and countless other benefits for you, like re-populating your digestive system with good bacteria after neglecting this for years, as is the case with most modern global citizens.
# This may be harder for some people but if you have health problems in your body, then do your very best to consume organic or homemade bone broth every day. Your second-best option is taking a collagen supplement. I'm a psych NP student and I want to thank you for making your videos available to everyone. I'm able to pick up gems of clinical insight while playing video games AND I get pieces to the "why do I do what I do?" puzzle. That's peak efficiency IMO!
This is great stuff and I really need to fix this in my life. Some notes:
- Getting control of my mind is something I've been really struggling with for a long time 🙁very happy to see a video that addresses it directly.
- Not the same situation, but my work and personal life situations allow me to get away with things to some degree, and my mind always pounces and takes advantage of that to get out of being productive and on time, and that can lead to bigger disasters later on.
- Don't know about the yoga stuff... may not be for me. But the general concept of sattva seems good and something I should aspire to.
- Sleep is essential indeed. And even more essential than I already realized. Can't describe how many days I just wasted by staying up way too late and not getting enough sleep. The next day seems to just crumble by itself, and then I stay up again and repeat the cycle. Going to bed is hard indeed, when nobody forces me to. I really need to prioritize sleep. (Writing this at 3 am btw)
- My diet is not too bad, I eat more veggies and fruit and try to avoid unhealthy foods; in the process of losing some weight. I gave up sugary cola many years ago (for preventative health reasons), but I do drink coke zero all the time, and some sugar-free/low-sugar energy drinks fairly often. With more sleep I will most likely eliminate the need for energy drinks and hopefully reduce the caffeine craving. Not sure how bad coke zero is (compared to seltzer), but I'm also trying to switch to sparkling water, especially after midnight.
- Getting out - I probably need to do that more. Exercise too.
- No devices in the toilet - this one kinda hurts. He's talking about 5 or 10 minutes - HAHAHAHAHA, as if I only wasted so little time that way. Yep, gotta get it under control.
- No devices while eating - hmm, does it make a big difference? Sounds like mindful eating, anyway I should give it a try, shouldn't be too hard.
- "Sorry we're not going to play a video game right now" - delayed gratification, gotta practice it more.
Hey Dr. K, I’ve been watching your videos for more than 6 months now. In that time I’ve grown more than I have in the last 30 years (I’m 31). I wish I would have been taught all this kind of stuff from an early age. I have 2 kids and both are under 3. Food that inspire calm and equilibrium. I take a cup of tea, coffee or mostly hot chocolate every time I study. And it help me getting started. Hot chocolate give me energy and the taste give me some bliss that replenish my will.
Also I don’t study if I feel unrest to avoid burn out. Instead I make hours of preparation in advance. Get enough sleep, clean up my room, make my desk a nice place, take a shower, eat well and turn on good music.
It’s like when I play The Sim. Fulfill my every basic need so that I can stay study at ease for the longest possible.

So I'd be working 11 or 12 hours straight while my co-workers got collectively 20-40 minutes paid break.
Breaks aren't mandatory where I'm at.

These are all good, I've been practicing this more or less all my life. My challenges is with dealing with other people and the lack of opportunities that seem to have disappeared in the last decade.
So the answer to the question "how to get willpower" is, in essence, eat healthy, sleep well, meditate (or "take time for yourself") and move your body :/ Literally what every Doc says when it comes to mental health. This does not work for me. I actually went to the gym three times a week and had a healthy diet for 2 years but gaining the willpower to do all that was as hard on the first day as it was after a year of doing it. There was never a habit formed for some odd reason. And I tried to change stuff a bit here and there, hoping I would finally make it click in my mind but it never happened. At some point I gave up, which felt great to not put that pressure on me all the time. Then I got lazy and fat and here I am :D

Hmmm…the main topic is to do these things to help with willpower generation.
But makes me wonder two things: 1) is it possible the willpower sink is still larger than the willpower generated? Thus, despite doing the right things, you still have negative willpower generation rate and therefore led to burnout?
2) is it possible to have excessive willpower and no outlet for it? If that’s the case, what happens to a person? If there’s no place to direct it’s use, what happens?
Since this is more health/biology than physics, excessive amounts of a substance can be harmful or lead to health issues. Too much meat can lead to gout, for example. So, is it possible that too much willpower could lead to its own type of unhealthiness?
I did the same things and also fell flat. After 2ish years of contemplating why, I’ve decided it’s because the work I do does not feel valuable and thus becomes a willpower sink. Not having a plan or understanding of goals or desires for my own life (aka, having ambitions) also led to burnout as I didn’t really have anywhere to put that willpower. It turned into anxiety and depression. Kinda like pumping too much air into a closed box. It increases internal pressure and generates heat which too much causes material stressing.
Not saying this is a solution as I’m still trying to figure out an answer too.
This is quite interesting. I think a possible explanation, for why the concept of Gunas works is, is how we learn to interpret things.
For Example: The vegetable chips, that are currently next to me, would probably be seen as Tames.
This would be, because chips are associated with sitting on the couch, or watching a movie.
So less active activities.
And you could probably do this for every object that exists out there. A camera or microphone, for me, would belong to Rajas.
They are something active, since they are used to interact with people and create content or videos.
So i see how this method can be used to check if you interpret something positive or negative for your live.
Mind you, if you are a gal, you might find that you subconsciously associate ALL foods with not being active. And if you do that - let's just say that's not a good idea. It's the kind of thing that can lead to anorexia. Or when the foods are calculated based on calories alone - so you get someone ordering salad after a hike, which is also a bad idea. And if it so happens that you get diarrhea from eating leafy greens, obviously don't eat those either and get your fiber from other sources that aren't leaves. Because yes, that happens sometimes. There are people who have digestive sensitivities specific to leaves (and sometimes apricots for some reason).

Anyone who takes up seltzer and struggles with less flavor, try a 50/50 orange juice and seltzer. My favorite pairing is with a peach flavor.

Edit: With the selzer you finish whats left in the can and it gets you acclimated to the difference in flavor over time, pro tip drink it fast for good "scrape" factor.
I've never really enjoyed carbonated drinks, but my flat-mates went keto and use sugar free flavorings. There are a lot available on the market, including sugar free copycats of many popular sodas.
here's something that worked for me, not sure if it'll work for others but I'll mention it anyway
I diminished my craving for sugar by switching what I drank during the day at work. I started doing really strong green tea (coffee makes me too jittery) where I just leave the teabag in the entire time I was drinking it and having one or two cups of that per day with nothing added. I was just doing it to get caffeine and water in my system so I wasn't worried about taste, but over time I started to enjoy it, it has almost a clean taste if that makes sense, and my teeth felt nicer not having sugar on them all day.
That started a positive feedback loop where I was satisfied with a lot less sugar in other foods and I even started having desserts with more mild tastes.
I would also try Nuun electrolyte tablets. They add fruit flavor and even increase the carbonation a little (or will add effervescence to regular water) and they have zero sugar and less than 1 net carb per tablet. I have found them to be crucial to my water intake as I don't normally enjoy drinking water.
I experience insane improvement in long dostance vision, spending 2 weeks outdoors with next to no phone use (camping) and being outside of the tent all day and evening. It 100% works.
My motivation and work ethic has been terrible since quarantine, I really needed this video

From a Greek/Mediterranean diet as far as breakfast goes, you could try tachini and honey. Tachini is basically a paste or a cream that comes from sesame. There's no sugar in it, and you can eat a sandwich with tachini, honey, blueberries, and nuts for breakfast. It'd delicious, it's healthy. Minus the blueberries, all the above, that's the norm breakfast for older people. One of the reasons Greeks live close to a 100. Also, there are variations of it. Like tachini with cocoa, you eat it like peanut butter, or by itself or with jam.
That whole talk about cigarettes made me realize why I subconsciously drank more kombucha after I quit drinking beer.
Every video that comes out, The title always puts me on blast before I even know it. But I'm grateful because watching it helps me get through whatever it is I'm dealing with.

These are like two handles on the same steering wheel. Sometimes it's more handy to use one, sometimes the other. The opposite handle changes position anyway.
+1 on the smoking cessation thing. I had a buddy who wanted to quit smoking, and he used his grandfather's method: switch to chewing tobacco first, so he could stop the going outside part of the habit, then switch to sunflower seeds to replace the dip. Brilliant to take it one step at a time.
It's not an internet comment without the awful part though: said friend's brother once took a blind drink of my buddy's ice tea cup from McDonald's. Except, it was spit from the dip. You're welcome.
I agree with a lot of this. Mental control can be improved through physical changes. However, I think that you need to look into nutrition more before suggesting these things. The thing is, a lot of what you're suggesting is an improvement over fast food or chips, but it isn't actually an optimal or even good diet. Fiber is not necessary for most people, the intestines change how they process food based on the presence of fiber so if you don't eat it, you don't need it. These sort of diets are a trap that many people fall into when they don't research dietetics in their entirety; even many registered dieticians preach this because it is what they learn in their classes (which are sponsored by agriculture companies specializing in products that the students are taught to erroneously recommend).
While I agree with you, I am pretty sure he's talking to the people who eat potato chips and 7up all day long, but I agree he should have just said "find some evidence based dietary information and make some improvements in the foods you consume."
I would start with a question why are we bored, what is boredom and why do we want to escape it? In my opinion it is the most marvelous thing that can happen to us. Why? If not boredom, we would not be humans. Your creativity and problem-solving is what is determined by boredom and what led us to today's technology. Remeber, you have a great tool in your hand 👏

just to add to the conversation, best thing i ever did in my life was cancel my phone plan and throw my phone under the mattress. Since then iv'e been far more focused, and happier, the only time i ever pull it up is to use the timer for a 15min power nap or gps when needed. Best decision I ever made in my life

I have the opposite problem. I show up. Work hard. All I care about is working hard, and being a good employee. The competition teams up, and after showing up every day I’m pushed out of any job that I actually am motivated to keep. Otherwise I would still be working there. I’m more than capable of keeping a job, working full time, and supporting myself but OTHER PEOPLE, and NOT myself are sabotaging my success.

Was gonna leave a comment saying that Dr K shouldn't have put those in the advanced section because people would use that as an out. Honestly though no devices while eating, or shitting means you can end up with even more time with those devices anyways since you end up doing both more efficiently/quickly while still getting in those little contemplative moments to pause and think on the current struggles of the day.
This is weird because if you are in a dull and kinda blurry moment in your life, you get bored and instinctively move to a more active and dynamic community or atmosphere, you get tired and get to a balanced state because of this. But I feel like at some point the cycle repeats itself.
The problem is that i have 1000 dr.k interviews to listen to wile im eating or taking a dump or taking a walk....

I think these will be helpful in building my willpower, but both conditions make it difficult for me to be in the moment and find motivation. I am motivated right now to build my willpower & use it as a tool to manage these conditions, but I’m afraid they will lead to me burning out

@@Jordan64852 It probably works with flowing water too due to the amount of visual stimulation. I know I like a good, fast flowing creek when I'm out on a nature walk. Especially if there are plenty of rocks and detritus in the way to break up the flow and draw your attention to patterns elsewhere.
