my U Joint was bad because the gearbox was dripping fluid between splines on the output flange, (since new as there was a spot with no sealing paste! This fluiid washed out the grease from the U Joint and covered the rubber mounting, leading to them collapsing over time and the shaft going offline lower, The U Joint was worn out and causing vibration at high speed all due to a wee bit of sealer missing.Just finished putting in new valve guides, am going to tackle the gearbox rebuild next
Technique will work. U-Joint is likely different. I spent a lot of time looking thru online U-Joint charts to find the one that was the correct size. Cap Diameter and length being critical.

Great idea of using washers to set even depth on both sides. Which U joint did you use?
