  • It's another on the duck farm. Following the mink attack, most of the ducks are starting to recover, but there is this one duck that seems to struggle.
    About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

    When Justin said, "it's good to feel that weight", something special clicked for me. You're grateful for being able to take this responsibility on yourself and further bond with the animal through your empathy towards it. You dont want to be unaware and disconnected from our food like the lot of us.
    You have a real love of all life and it shows.

    Sorry about that, mate. It is one of the downsides of raising animals for profit or food. When you build your new duck house, be sure to bury about a foot of fencing all around the base. It is time-consuming and it does add to the cost, however, it will keep most predators from tunneling into your building. I am looking forward to what you come up with. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
    PS: Look at how 50 ducks in a hot tub has done his building and yard for his ducks. Might help you some.

      @@brendamontanye9877 Matt at 50 Ducks in a Hot Tub did that to his Shed when he extended it. It eliminates the possibility of digging under. Our duck run was like his only we had a full size barn on 2 levels. I put wire around the lower edges and buried it under about 12 inches of dirt. That seemed to stop all but the most persistent of mice.

    You probably know more about this than I, but there is a guy in Spain that raises natural (no gavage) foie gras. He also gets a lot of volunteer wild geese that he harvests along with his own progeny. There may be something he does that's applicable to your operation. His goal is to make his farm "a heaven for geese". That way they naturally gorge to produce the foie gras nature's way. Being able to lure volunteer additions to the flock might be good. Good luck to you. Making a go from farming is tough business. Love your videos.

    Ive been watching your channel for awhile now. You have so much energy and enthusiasm with your duck farm (awesome sense of humor) its contagious. Its also interesting because you provide a point of view from a duck farmer whereas when I watch Joseph Carter I see the point of view of someone who raises mink. When I watch his channel I empathize with the mink and see that its their nature to hunt and kill rodents. But when I watch your channel I see how minks interfere with your livelihood. You have my sympathies. It is heart-wrenching to see someones life being torn apart because of a predator. You put alot of time and hardwork into raising your ducks and then to see it unravel- is really frustrating.

There is no guarantee that those other dog breeds will also not be cowards and high tail it. An LGD was bred to protect for thousands of years, even with its life if necessary, they will kill the predators before they get anywhere near his animals, if they aren't deterred first.

I would think a mink would be easy peasy for them. I would also think the mink wouldn't dare to approach anywhere near those ducks. Great Pyrenees are extremely laid back and friendly to their owners and as far as they're concerned those are THEIR sheep and ducks. Very protective.

    As one commenter stated before, maybe you missed it, if you want to catch a mink you need to bury the trap so that the opening is like a hole in the ground. As the commenter stated " never saw a mink or weasel, that can resist going in a hole". I believe that will bring you success in catching the mink. I grew up on a 30 acre farm way out in the woods, our closest neighbor was a mile away down a dirt road, we were over 5 miles to the nearest paved road, so I know what it is like to live in the woods with the critters. We had ducks, chickens, pigs, cows, horses, etc., every kind of farm animal, and even a Macaw parrot that my dad brought back from South America, LOL, he got a native to climb a tall tree and got one of the 2 day old chicks and hand raised her. We dealt with lots of critters way out there in the country, and the commenter's advice they gave you in your last video, is the best advice from my experience. Good luck!

    I think you should feel good about your wild visitors. I had a friend who raised turkeys. One day a bunch of her wild visitors just stayed. She joked that she hatched 12 and ended up with 16 at the end of the season.

    You're going about this the right way. You knew NOTHING about this duck thing so it's better to start out as the janitor and work your way up! Period!! Good on ya for taking small bites.

    For the issue on animals not being protected, get a male goose that can't really fly. They're just as mean and fearless as the ones that do fly. Kinda like a guard dog

    • @GoldShawFarm
      @GoldShawFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't fly much. They can maybe fly about two feet off the ground and for about 25 feet.

    I’m sure that you are dispatching your culls or harvests of ducks/geese out of sight of the flock, so as not to stress them out.

    In designing your repkacment Duck Den may I suggest thst you make it elevated above the ground by at least 18 inches for better pred deterrent and enclosing and insulating the bottom elevated section so you can use it as storsge so ascto makecfull use of the space.

    • @GoldShawFarm
      @GoldShawFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm definitely thinking of elevated. Why 18" vs 12"?

      @@GoldShawFarm considering the standing height of minks and weasels, and that they can only stand for short lengths at a time this would make it more difficult for them to want to try to chew through the wooden walls. This also from what Ive watched others that have set their raised housing at for same or similar reasons. I like you vids for a newby you are learning very quickly and doing very well sir.

      Wow. That is an outstanding point. I’m definitely doing that. Thanks for the suggestion. Part of why I like making videos and showing my screw ups is I can get out great ideas from people like you. I really appreciate that help. It’s going to make me better in the long run. Thank you!

    A Gard goose, if raised with the ducks might get ride of other ducks. I lost a few chickens after bush turkeys brought in diseases.

    I really would like to have chickens, (after watching your video's I'm thinking ducks ) BUT, I have a Nature Preserve across the road from my property. There are Coyote, fox, Owl's Cougars many other animals that find farm foul tasty. So I would need to build a very solid house for the birds. A farm down the road from us were cleaned out they literally killed every bird they had (Coyote pack). Now that's pricey

    The only way to get that mink is to put the ducks back in the other coup with the trap set inside where the mink is getting through. Or I seen that the mink was active around 9.30pm I'd sit out with a shotgun and headlamp and wait from 9 onwards. I live in Chile otherwise I'd help you out hopefully a local hunter can help you out?

    (Ha ha-"butt ugly"!)

    • @GoldShawFarm
      @GoldShawFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm going to wait a little bit. I think the order is going to be to focus on the geese and build the new duckhouse over the next month or two. Once we hit the summer, we'll see where things are at, but I'll probably end up hatching around then.

    Stress absolutely messes with egg production. Not sure what the most cost effective method to deal with especially agile and small predators like a stoat. Always better to have a passive defense. If you could have long term traps with more enticing bait than your stock, maybe? But that could attract MORE predators.
    If you could deter with scents that won't spook the ducks maybe?
