    Geese are a whole different animal than ducks. They eat vegetation where ducks eat grain and bugs.
    I love Pilgrim geese. I raised 2 geese and a gander. The gander and one of the geese hatched out 5 goslings. The lighter gosling is a gander and the darker one is the goose. The adult male Pilgrim looks like an Emden and the female looks like a Tulouse. I raised mine hands on and they were pretty tame. I could even hold my adult gander on my lap. At least until breeding season. Most of the time he was a pussy cat but during breeding season he was hell on webbed feet. And don't poo poo those goose teeth. Their bills are serated so they can cut through tough vegetation. They can also cut skin. Just ask my dad. My gander laid his leg open 4". They like to grab hold of you with their bills and flog you with their wings too. I've had many bruises from that and almost had my wrist broken by a ganders wing. Again all that happened during breeding season. The problem is only the gander knows when that is. In Southeastern Colorado it can start as early as February it just depends on the weather.
    Perhaps you are planning to eat them and not breed them. Personally, I would eat the Emdens and breed the Pilgrims because the Emdens are larger and the Pilgrims are in danger of becoming extinct. Plus you tell the males from females right after hatching. That's why I had them.

    • @gelwood99
      @gelwood99 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I was thinking the same thing. Maybe put blocks under the legs to raise it high enough for ducks/geese they are bigger than chicks. I personally LOVE the radiant heat plates!

    • @jameshack485
      @jameshack485 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Definitely using the heating plate wrong. Adjust those yellow polls on the corners to increase height. May need to raise even further since these are geese, not chickens.

    You're gonna love the pilgrims. The embden can be a little feisty at times. Make sure you feed them the proper diet and protein amounts. It differs from most ducks. Geese can easily get screwed up bones if too much protein causes them to grow too fast. Pay close attention to that and niacin supplement. You're gonna love em, we do.

    We used to house our lab in an outdoor kennel and run when we were out during the day and overnight, as he was very destructive on soft furnishings if not watched ! I went to let him out one morning as usual and found the shed dark and cold and him crouched in the corner looking scared, poor guy. It turned out that the glass heated lamp I used above the dog box had shattered. It was on a chain and I always had it at a safe height to allow plenty of room so I figured it must have blown. You have to change all the bedding ( sawdust in his case ) as those tiny shards go everywhere. Luckily my dog wasn't injured. I feel the reptile kind are safer. Great vid - lovely to see your new residents settling in : )

    Those reptile lamps are a game changer! Truthfully we were told that a lot of the mistakes with heating lamps come when the bulb is too high in voltage for the lamp. People don't realize that a lot of lamps on the market aren't actually rated for the average heating lamp then you get BOOM.

    I have 2 ducks who hatched last summer under a broody chicken hen. They spent nights sleeping under the chicken coop until just a few months ago. I started making a big effort last year to get them to join the older ducks (bought summer of 2017) in the kennel. Most nights they just refused, but late winter they finally started joining the older ducks and geese in the kennel at night. I always give them a treat at night. But every morning when I open the gate, those 2 ducks go off by themselves. The 2 geese go off together, and the older ducks go off together. They will spend the day in 3 distinct groups. My geese were adults when I got them so I never saw them grow up.

  • @RayFromTheHayclan

    I've raised chickens, ducklings and a few geese. I used to fret over setting up the heat lamps and getting the temperature just right. Now I just put a heat lamp in a brooder add the chicks, observe, and they will tell you how comfortable they are and how you adjust your heat lamps. Good luck.

    I use the heat plate and my goslings love it. The water is fine in those to start but I had to soon change as they grew. One big difference from ducks I found is that goslings are not as messy as ducks with the water. It’s my 1st year for ducks and goslings. Love them both. My goslings are really friendly. Been seeing your goslings progress on Instagram and Facebook. Cannot wait to see more. Keep up the good work.

    Thank you for making these geese videos. I'm seriously considering getting some of the purportedly best forager breeds for a low-input meat production bird and for their use as alarm animals. With year round grass I'm expecting it would be a worthwhile endavour.
    I've had chickens my whole life and never thought I'd say this in a million years, but I'm growing pretty over a lot about them. With health troubles that randomly effect my ability to do just about anything I'm really starting to like the idea of having animals that will feed themselves if I physically cannot manage to walk on a given morning. No large predators here so just having a decent open lean-to as shelter from the elements would be feasible.
    I'm going to watch the rest of your goose videos now that I realize you have more (from seeing this playlist of Pastured Geese). Thank you for sharing your accrued knowledge on these guys. The more I find out about them the more I think they may be a superior and very viable way forward in terms of meat production. I will still probably have a few other poultry types to cover egg production.

We farm both ducks and chickens for eggs and noticed that the only predators we have issues with really are aerial and apparently geese will scare them off. Ours is an African goose, about 3 months old now, and I will say I haven't seen a hawk or a crow nearby since we moved her outside!

    Raise the heating plate - use a couple of breeze blocks/cinder blocks, they shouldn't be able to knock them over at this point

    Good luck with the goslings. Geese can get scary once they get big.

    Sweet. I finally got my own birds. Chickens and ducks. Looking towards geese sometime too. Hopefully you don't wind up being allergic to goose eggs too lol
