- Our geese are growing up and it is amazing to watch how quickly they mow through our pasture like their names were Kubota. Also in this video, I try to build a new chicken tractor, the little ducks meet the big ducks and I offer a tree update.

I’m a hobby farmer myself and expanded my gardens and duck run this year. My wife doesn’t like the ducks roaming the yard at all but I don’t mind how they eat the weeds and all the nasty bugs and insects.
Yellowing of leaves is usually water stress. Too much water. With all the rain we have had this year, probably it. Check your soil and if too wet, there is your problem. If the soil is dry, lack of iron most likely. Love seeing the black locust!!!! We plant those too. Homesteaders friend extreme! We just put the pods in a coffee can with crushed gravel and shake like crazy. Also scarifies the seed coat and boom! Soak in hot water overnight(stats hot and then cools), go out in morning, and, Good to go! You are doing so much that we are doing and really good to see.

The things you show us are never boring. I would love to see you get the seeds out of the pods and getting them to sprout. Chicken tractor is coming together nicely. Loved the video.

hay is decaying and not beneficial towards the oxygen release of plants it may be good insulation but does not help the plant
We have a national park who has just landscaped this area.... no imagination just lawn and the odd tree. I hate it. Soon the massive lawn mowers will be out.

Just watching this now, but my grandfather built a cabin in rural ontario decades ago in blackfly country and the best way to keep the blackflies down is to make some wooden roosting boxes for common bats. There's like a dozen or so nesting spots set up around the property, and they really help keep the bugs down. We used to sit by the campfire looking up at the stars and watch teams of bats eat the insects lured by our fire.
GOOSE TURDS FTW! My lawn is full of them but my geese help me cut the grass so i dont have to :D I got 38 new hatching eggs emden geese and i hope i get them all out :P Watching from Norway.
A patch of penny royal grows on the edge of my woods. I grab some and rub the leaves over my arms, neck, etc. and it effectively repels gnats. Perhaps you have a similar herb on your farm that you can use to ward off black fly.

we have some ponds with some bullfrogs, toads and tree frogs around here in Michigan.
they are very healthy.

See what sorts of flycatcher birds are native to your area. Build a few hundred (literally) birdhouses for these and stagger them all over your property. Martin houses, etc. if they are in your area. Birds are your best bet to control flies. Good luck!
In NZ we call them sandfly. My Dad always put tiger balm on the itchy bites and it helped soothe the itch.
..go with the tiger balm white...
Maybe looking into haveing a bat colony on the farm might help with insect control.

Was in Alaska where a shop had a display of a large cargo net. A sign on it said, "Alaska mosquito net".
Yes, the war on bugs:
Consider some way to ruin the bug's habitat, that is use the ducks to disturb your stream banks.
Pigs in a hot wire fence will root around and disturb the bug's home land.
I am presuming you will only do this enough to cure the problem, and not destroy habit.
Alas, folks on the Gulf Coast suffer from the near miss of a hurricane, because the bugs [snakes too] are displaced into the neighborhoods, where they had been controlled before.
Bats are rabies carriers (ie. they'll get rabies very easily, then they'll live and carry the rabies to anything they and their saliva touches). Please consider other forms of insect control.
icesilverwind That is not true. Bats do not carry rabies anymore than other animals (and some studies indicate they are less likely to carry it) and they are NOT asymptomatic carriers. These are old myths that have been perpetuated by ignorant media outlets looking for sensational headlines. Please do more research and don’t spread false information.
Try these wasps from Texas they will not sting though they will die before that but they have to be put in manure

Picaridin works wonders for biting flies. We don’t have them in my area (thick with mosquitoes though) but I’ve been hiking in areas with them. Yes, they’re terrible. I bought sawyer picaridin lotion and never had another problem with them.
Yes to Black Locus tree starts. I bet your wife is a loving nurse because she is so loving and kind to your animals.

Have you thought about applying a foliage spray of fish emulsion or seaweed? It may help perk up your garden and the apple seedlings.

I've spent all day watching your series...I agree with you on going for geese,my one suggestion is you also sell pheasants. I think they taste even better than geese,even though I've only had pheasent once. Anyway,great series.

Chestnut trees are great, easiest way to bag all the squirrels you can eat! Whenever I go squirrel hunting I find a Chestnut tree, sit and wait, I usually get 3-4 in an hour.

Plant some bird houses around some of the worst areas for flies hopefully some house martinis will inhabit and keep some of the flies down
Hey if you have any dead trees on your land, particularly Ash look on the side facing the sun and you might see some round black charcoal looking lumps on the tree. They are known as coal fungus. Split a decent sized stick (at least 2 inches) into quarters at one end of the stick. Take the coal fungus split it in half and turn it into an ember with a piece from the fire or some sparks. Wedge it into the split stuck. Then put a load of moss on top of it. Watch your flies disappear like magic

My wife bought mosquito netting that goes under your hat and covers your face. We are having a nat infestation at our little horticulture farm, thankfully they are not the biting kind. This year worse than others, probably because of all the standing water from the flooding in the mid-west.
I have the same type of net. I use it a lot.
We had a bumper crop of buffalo gnats. We have found this Sawyer Premium Insect Repellent lotion with 20% Picaridin works great on them.
Looks like its mostly a food garden. I'd suggest you try to raise the bed about 6 inches and mix in a little sand. The elevation helps keep some of the roots a little dryer and the sand helps with drainage. Especially if your soil is rich in clay. Chips and hay trap in moisture, which is good in dry months but can be bad when its very wet. A little is good for cutting down weeds but it seems you have quite a pile. I'd say you need to till with some manure and potash come winter too. Also up your pairings. Three sisters, bean corn and squash. Tomatoes and any other nitrogen loving plant. A bed of tomatoes will come back year after year. And you can have it share with other plants. Then when its time for new tomato plants, you can harvest the nitrogen rich soil.

I love haritige breeds. I plan if I ever can move to a better land I plan to get Dewlap geese I just love them and every one I have met is sweeties. I hope I can grow out my farm again. I need a merical if that is to happen really. But will keep fighting and working to my dreams disability or not.
You really should get Muscovy ducks. They are excellent in fly control

@@omobabaijebu9854 I have a dozen of them myself. They do fly but short distances and will stay relatively close to their food source. I feed all my ducks (50) black oil sunflower seed sprouts in the morning when I let them out of their enclosure, they free range all day, then put them back in the enclosure just before sunset with a little crumble all flock feed. Scovies are excellent egg hatchers whereas other domestic breeds not so much. They'll hatch ANY other breeds' eggs too.
It looks like you need a couple Sheep and one goat to graze and mulch with their hooves. They draw a lot of fly's to them and away from everything else. Don't keep them in the same area to long or the ground will turn to muck and their hooves will rot and have problems. Some plants can be poison to them but I'm not sure what plants so be careful. I love your Channel. I'm learning a lot.
I love the quackens I'm tring my luck with 7 duck eggs in the incubator I went with ancona just like the way they look. The geese are so noisy but cool I will watch them on your channel don't want any for myself lol.

The Chestnut seeds (and black locus) are great, maybe also look at getting your nursery licence like Mark Sheppard did and be able to buy and sell wholesale quantities of them. Are you also going to finish off the guild, say black cherry, walnut, pecan, mulberry, autumn olive, etc.?
I have never seen anyone try to grow chestnuts. Interesting. Wish you well. Yes do a video on the locusts. I had a bumblebee chasing me around today. I swatted at it so many times I decided I would go in and let it alone before I got stung.

You could try setting up a bat house to encourage some bats to move in.
First thing where were the plants being grown indoors greenhouse? They will need some time to acclimate to there new environment . Sometimes smaller plants will adjust quicker and quickly out grow others in bigger pots great way to save few bucks or get a bunch more for equal value. As lush and green the surroundings are it looks to not be lacking much. Cheers

i built a pvc hoop house thats roughly 4x8. i covered it in garden wire and chicken wire and also put a tarp over the top. its super light weight but also heavy enough an animal cant pick it up. works great for moving around the yard every day.

I have a half acre lawn, I hate to mow it. I should get a gaggle of geese to do the work for me. If I remember correctly when geese get to a certain age they can pretty much live on grass alone. I love following your adventures, reminds me of myself when I had my 3-acre chicken farm. I used to design and build of my own hoop houses feeders and nest boxes.
That is correct. At this point, our geese only get about 20% of their diet from feed. The rest is all grass. I'm going to continue to lower that as they get older.

Hi Morgan. Have you ever looked into attracting Swallow type birds on your farm? Barn Swallows, Tree Swallows, or Purple Martins. They are voracious flying insect eaters.

Aside from all sorts of fruit and nut trees, I love willows and quaking Aspen trees....they can grow where you live, right? They are cold weather trees.
Hmm, black flies....heard about them in Alaska...they tend to be in colder climates in the US. I don't think they have that issue in Northern Idaho, thank goodness.

I think it's a different type of fly. These buys are tiny.
Goldshaw. You need a small duck pond. Like a 6 foot round feed tub. Then water your plants with the dirty duck water. I promise that duck water will have you growing super veggies and fruit
In Ireland they have millions of those biting flies. They call them Midges.

The CBD plant require a lot of special care such as lower ph in the soil, constant warm temperature and a lot of nutrients.
Wet plus cold will give you yellowing in the plants

build a deep pond and stock it with some trout. The flies will be attracted to the water and the trout will eat the flies.

We have bugs in NW Florida that wee call no-see-ems or sand knats, they are very similar and really aggravating. Some people have worse reactions than others.
