Morgan you said something in this episode that really touched me asa viewer. You were talking about preservation of the barn and you made mention of the fact that we, the viewers assist you by watching because of the monies you receive from TH-cam for number of subscribers, etc. Thank you because over the Homesteaders Conference, Baker Creek etc, I felt we viewers and our contribution was not noticed. It is because of we viewers, they (because you were one of the few who were not guilty( they wwere able to attend and enjoy. This is my long way of saying "Thank you Morgan""

I completely agree. Historically; American Farmers have always had a certain amount of subsidies and grants to whatever they grow/provide so I don't see the issue with it at all.

Between the farm work, full time off-farm job, building infrastructure like coops yourself, shooting and editing videos, Alison's school load, and just...the responsibilities of life and home ownership, I really find it difficult to hear that people are angry about anything you do. Or about where your money comes from, not that it is anybody's business..
Add on the pressure of predators. I know. My first coop and flock attacked by a big bear several times this month. Destroyed my coop, got some of my girls. And winter weather here! Time and money spent on fixing and preventing more loss....

has a program to preserve their heritage
and you are participating in that program.
They need you more than you need them.
If no participants joined the program,

Hey, Morgan! My name is Collin, and I just wanted you take a minute to let you know how your videos and your story have impacted my life.
I've been watching your videos for a couple months now, and over that time I've had to opportunity to watch many episodes from your back log as well as your more current offerings. Watching your story unfold and your farm come together piece by piece has been an incredibly inspiring privilege.
See, I'm a glass blower by trade. I invested years of my life into learning the craft and even did a college major in flameworked glass. I haven't melted or blown any glass with regularity in well over three years now. I settled for something safe and something menial. Something that I knew wasn't going to ever make me feel truly happy or fulfilled.
You and your farm made me realize the dream doesn't have to die.
To make a long story short, I've recently been offered a residency at a very prestigious arts centre in Ontario. I'm dropping down to part time at my "9-5", and dammit I'm going to make that dream work. No matter what it takes.
Thank you for helping to give me that courage, and showing me that dreams don't need to die. I think a khaki campbell is going to be one the first things I make when I get back behind a torch.

I introduced my LGD to the chickens by holding a bird and calling it a name...chick chick is any chicken. I hid the bird’s head and let the dog sniff her. He went to grab feathers so I thumped his nose saying, “NO! Chick chick.” Good chick chick!” I repeated it and praised the dog for gentle interest. It worked very well, and very fast. The problem with young LGDs is just playfulness...you have to monitor them!
Trained him to respond to hawks defensively by standing and pointing at the “bad bird” while naming it for him, and barking and growling. I’m sure the neighbors were considering calling the nice men in white coats, but it worked, lol... He even knows the sounds they make, and will respond if he is inside.
If I could suggest a minor change, move the dog pen so it can get partial sunshine during the day. You’re doing great!

The rest of the dogs watched the chicks grow into hens, and now just basically ignore them. We got the Husky when she was a year old and it has been tough training a smart and energetic dog who at one year had basically . Ok I got off track.

I'm new to your channel so I don't know if you clip wings or not on your chickens. If you don't you might consider putting wire or some other cover on top of the kennel to keep the chickens from getting in with the dog when you are not there to monitor the dog that way there is less chance of the dog having an opportunity to kill one of your chickens. Also really glad to hear you are repairing the barn the last video I watched had a letter from a guy about a some group that dismantles barns and I was relieved when you were talking about all of the plans you have for the barn in this one. @@Infinite8blue In Chicago the resident Canada geese swim every day, at least every day I can get down to the lakefront on my morning walk until the lake is frozen farther out than I can see, which is rare and they might still be swimming I just can't see that they do.
On poultry and feet. Never kept waterfowl but I have kept chickens and chickens do get frostbite. There's a shot in the video of a chicken standing on one foot. I'm pretty sure that the chickens are in serious danger standing on snow.

Ducks have a special adaptation that allows them to cool the blood as it goes down towards the feet, and warm back up as it reenters the body, so they don't lose any body heat to cold water. It's quite fascinating, they're tough little dudes 💜

Once you get your pond built I think they will stay in there the majority of the time during the winter. I have always marveled at ducks and geese not being frozen cold when swimming in water in winter. But if you think about it, the water is still warmer than frozen snow and ground. Sometimes when it was very cold, Mom would take an axe and bust holes in the ice. The ducks and geese would get in there and churn the water and it couldn't freeze up again. The other reason she had to bust holes in the ice is because ice creates a seal on the pond - it doesn't let oxygen in - and she didn't want a bunch of dead fish. So it was a two-fold exercise. My mother was a dedicated and responsible farmer - I am always grateful for the education I received under her.

Loved the glimpse of Canadian Geese heading for warmer climes. Grew up in NH, been in TX for 3 years, miss seeing, hearing them. Had a shock last week, visited a friend in Castroville, TX. Walking around outside I heard a strange sound for TX. Three female Canadian Geese are living there!Temps been in lower 30's last few mornings. Wonder if they still here.

Hi 👋 I’m in upstate NY bordering VT we both have the winter weather in common and I also have 7 chickens and 3 ducks. I’ve enjoyed building onto a over hang big shed off garage. And it’s been quite the gradual process of housing my babies. It truly feels wonderful having them to tend to and grow with them and I’ve learned so much in the last year of being a new Mommy. Iv lost my only 2 female ducks to prey birds. they are free roam during good weather months to get a healthy diet and eat ticks and also the enjoyment of being around them all through the nice weather months. I know all to well the go to bed routine here LOL. There are factors that Iv learned that work and don’t work and I couldn’t picture myself without having them in my life💕I enjoy your channel and a big hello from across the pond!

reinforce the bottom section of your dog run with cattle panels tied on over the outside along the bottom. The gauge of wire they used on that dog kennel is very light weight and easily bent, flexed, etc. The ties they used on it are also light gauge ties that can snap if a big powerful dog pushes against them.

Morgan, You will achieve a lot before the teeth of the storm! For myself, I am patient enough to watch you realise your vision. Quite right. Use the barn. My chickens and their coop are heading into the polytunnel for winter. Same idea, smaller scale with my three chickens! Go with the snow. Regards Stephen.
