That semi-realistic skeleton in the first open grave is straight-up terrifying. Imagine actually seeing that as a little kid at 4:15 in the morning.
I still get the creeps when I think about it before bed. Its so upsetting because you see so much terror in that face and broken jaw, I just, ugh.

It is! In previous videos, it's shown that Local 58 broadcasts in Lasker Coty, Edenvale, and Ichor Falls. Lasker City and Edenvale were first mentioned in Broodhollow, and Ichor Falls is a previous horror project by Kris and is mentioned to be a neighbouring town to Broodhollow. And in fact, in the very video after this, Broodhollow is also included in the broadcasted towns!

I like the idea that this is an animation's studio's way of subliminally warning children about the moon somehow. Maybe the government publicly tries to keep information surrounding the creature suppressed and difficult to access - sort of like other taboo topics that animators might broach. They have a very powerful platform in that children actively want to hear what they have to say. From their perspective it might very well be sensible to say, "the moon is not actually friendly, don't piss it off going snooping, underground spaces cannot protect you, this is a matter of life or death."
Kinda like YMCA but for a horrible eldritch abomination.

I love it that at 1:00 they hold the shot for just a tad bit too long to make you uncomfortable
i noticed that, it's subtle but has a lot of impact. too long and it becomes "meh, a jumpscare", too short and you don't take it in enough...

The music that cuts away is also a nice touch.
The music cuts away just a hair too soon. It primes your subconscious to realize something's wrong, and while your reptile brain is thinking about that, throws the imagery at you. It's so good.

Top tier analog horror. The free form jazz and bumper graphics of the 70s and vintage animation and score along with the “hisses and pops” generate a sense of comfort yet very unsettling. Well done!

Now that Local 58 has made the switch to digital TV, I think I would love to see full-color versions of Monsieur and Madame Cadavre as shown in the montage of the history of WCLV with the song used in it as the backing track to hopefully make it that much less creepy.

I don't know, the animation is too clean to look authentic.
Details you might have missed:
-After Cadavre looks in the first grave and sees the fucked up skeleton, the moon is still smiling and the music is still playing, even though Cadavre is obviously shaken up.
-When Cadaver is looking in the second grave, you can see the moon looking in too
-Whatever creature was in there was alive despite the cobwebs
-Only after Cadavre sees this creature does the music stop and the moon take on a grim expression
-After Cadavre sees the creature, the moon moves closer, as it is now in front of the trees (confirmed to be intentional)
-When Cadavre lays down and dies, the shot of the moon moving over him is *inside* the cave. Look at the background... It's not the sky, it's the cave interior. Meaning the moon is in there with him.
-After the moon moves over him, Cadavres body takes on a much more realistic appearance
-At the end slide, the clown is facing the other way, it's mouth is open much wider, and it's eyes move to look at you.
My Theory:
Cadavre wasn't meant to see that creature in the second grave. The first grave contains someone who also saw the creature (as evidenced by it's deformed appearance). The Moon, for some reason, becomes very upset when Cadavre sees it and kills him.
I believe the creature in the second grave to be of the same race as the creature seen in "You are on the fastest available route". It's connected somehow to the moon.
There's also a sudden shot of the figure in the first grave in the transition after Cadavre runs fron the second grave @ 1:34
Also the creature in the grave's body looks like the surface of the Moon in "Skywatching". Personal theory is that the Moon is a massive "parent" of these creatures, either always has been or grew inside it. The Moon is watching him and is displeased when cadavre finds the creature because it wants their existence to remain hidden until "the event". As shown in other videos the creatures have the ability to manipulate minds and technology so the Moon creature makes cadavre go down into the cave and die to make sure it's secret remains hidden.
Also, during the part where the moon is able to be seen in front of the trees, it takes on a different expression than the smile

This is one of the most eerie and *wonderful* of this genre. Everything about it is picture perfect. I first watched this a year ago, and rewatching again, I still remember the chills.
Does it help that I know the old school cartoons, and they were already creepy as hell? I mean, I am already kinda sickened with a lot of Chris Ware stuff, and he's just doing a call back.
That is so weird and eerie.
As someone who is big on metaphor's I find this kind of sad, my take on this is that;
Cadavre was trying to find love or some significant other, [his friend, Moon happy with him], finding an unperfect expectation, and kept going. Cadavre, finding another grave, looks down again, [so does Moon, also curious to see if Cadavre will find good results] but yet again, Cadavre was left running. [even Moon, watching from behind seems concerned for him] until he found one grave that was maybe promising, the unseeable end yielding good or bad results (he wouldn't know unless he went down) hopes low, or maybe too far to redeem, Cadavre continued, finding another grave, empty. He either falls down accidentally and accepts it or jumps down voluntarily in depressive/suicidal thoughts (most likely option 2) and the moon looking over to see his further decrepit body decayed (even though he's a skeleton...)
I don’t know 1920s cartoons were pretty dark. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a cartoon like this for kids

Fun fact: early animation _wasn't_ for kids! The stuff you see from the early 1900's to 1930's was actually meant for adult audiences, and often dealt with mature themes like drugs and alcoholism that we don't recognize because we don't recognize the lingo.

When the moon stops smiling, it's actually closer. You can see it is in fact in front of the tree while the Skelly is walking.
And the moon even closer to him when he dies. It's literally inside the cave peeking at his tomb. Pay attention to what's behind the moon. It isn't the sky. It's the roof of the cave.

Really late to the party, but if I had to guess: Cadavre (which is a French word for... You guessed it) kept running into instances where his cartoonish, rather innocent (for what it is) world kept intersecting with another, darker world.
Case in point, the moon he sees at the end - the one that turns him into a more "realistic" skeleton, is not the same one in the background at the start of his trip. His misadventure through the dark tunnel could also be an allusion to this. That moon coincidentally is probably the same one from Skywatching.
I like how at 0:39 the tree passes in front of the moon but at 1:39 it passes behind it, showing that the moon is much closer now.

Out of all the local 58 videos, the 1970's/1980's intro is my favorite
I had really vivid nightmares as a kid. A lot of the time they seemed like normal stories or occurances I had expirienced but all of the sudden, noise would cut out, or my mind would linger on a disturbing image for a while. That's why I found this one to be the most unsettling. When I first saw it I swear it was like I've had the dream before. when they lingered on the graves, it haunted me.
Ruby Laurin I know exactly what you are talking about. The images in this remind me of some of the ones in scary stories to tell in the dark, whenever I read that as a kid I would have nightmares like yours. Really made this video a masterpiece

Oh shit, I had the exact same type of nighmares! Some random boring stories about the people I know and then all of the sudden everything gets creepy and stops on an image. The moment that he discovers the skeleton of his girlfriend gives a very similar vibe that the one I remember from those disturbing nightmares.
When these noises or images occurred in your dreams, did you happen to sleep with a fan in your room? Only asking because I've had similar experiences with the sudden jarring noise that causes me to wake up in fear.
