The cool (but terrifying) thing about this, is that it's an actual psychological test that actually messes with your cognition, and makes you have a harder time recognizing faces in real life.

They force you to think that the image stays in your vision by gradually lowering the opacity of a silhouette after the image disappears, and it's actually what it really looks like when that happens. It's a really well done effect.

@@lyra9223 I only like jumpscares when it's mostly me that made it a jumpscare. Like if I see a weird figure in the background of a movie scene, but there's no loud sound or effects.
@@lyra9223 Yeah jumpscares scare you that's why you get adrenaline. Would you describe something jumping at your face as not scary? Jumpscares are incredibly great at scaring people and factory farmed horror movies use them *all* the time because they know it works. But that leads to a lack of actual story or inferal of different emotions; no context is built.Jumpscares aren't the problem they are one of the most effective sources of fear and shock, it's the over saturated use of them and nothing else that's the problem. I mean the whole time watching this video I was *expecting* a jumpscare and that's what made it scary because the artists are creative and know to use different techniques at different times unlike mainstream horror directors and writers who don't. I believe that jumpscares aren't a problem the directing is, that's my opinion anyway.
What makes it worse is that it'd be easier if it had a jumpscare.
I know Petscop achieves a similar effect to this.

SPOILER ALERT: Okay, having experienced long-term sleep deprivation for myself, I'd like to attempt an interpretation of this video:
There's a phenomenon in our minds called pareidolia, it's when we think we see faces or human forms in things like clouds or images of mythological or divine beings in our breakfast pastries. I think the "faces" in this video are intentionally messing with whatever it is in our brains that stirs the pareidolia response, we recognize the faces as "faces," but they get so much more and more messed up over time that they don't look human... but still "kinda human."
This entire video plays out like a research project trying to convince the subject that their own natural responses are somehow wrong, as if they're trying to make the subject's own brain betray itself.
When I was in Iraq, I had experienced a prolonged "incident" that kept me awake for four straight days: I felt very high energy like I could have run three marathons in a row, along with a very strong disorientation as if I were floating. On the last day, I started hallucinating and then was ordered to check in with a medic. When it was safe enough to actually sleep, I didn't dream. There's a reason why the UN considers sleep deprivation a form of torture, because it fucking is.
The opening sequence after the introduction says that this video is made for a specific person with a name, but also an ID number that's six digits long: This is a common practice in the American prison system, I only know THIS because I have a few friends and family members who've been on the wrong side of the bars. I suspect that the purpose of this video is that not only was this "institute" experimenting on inmates to study the effects of sleep deprivation, but that this tape (nor the "workbook") should never have been found out about either. Unfortunately, convicts are seen as disposable or barely even human even if their crimes weren't serious, so they'd be a likely target for human experiments.
Anyway, I know this video is actually fiction and meant for entertainment, but that's the impression that I get.

You might have really figured it out with that prison thing. The idea of someone being subjected to this involuntarily... brr. I mean this whole thing’s bad but what really gets me is Kris devising a phrase like “Ablation of Subconscious” - you shouldn’t want anything about yourself to have the word “ablated” applied to it, even an abstract thing. Maybe the carceral state is the only force that could even accomplish that.
(Although I imagine the average prisoner’s recourse to consult someone other than their doctor about issues isn’t considerable? Does TRI have a staff member on hand for that?)

Insomnia is fuckin weird. You know you're supposed to sleep, but your body won't let you. The fun part is having access to DPH, which is supposed to make you sleepy, but not the awareness that it's a deliriant.

local 58 is genius when it comes to its definition and how it displays 'horror',, we're so used to jumpscares, disturbing music, and some sort of danger to raise unnecessary fear or anxiety for entertainment, which ive became bored of with its same routine and story. however local 58 uses that and creates suspense for something that will never come which creates this uneasiness to their videos which i love.
i enjoy how there is a 'story' in some way and how it displays this hypnotic society ? im not sure how to explain it, but i just love the uniqueness of this world and its goals and whatever is causing the human race to behave differently due to this 'higher entity/ies' creating these new social norms and whats the new desired face for this society such as dream and imagination as invalid and all should obey the rules of the handbook and how its so recommended to surrender to the 'moon' and all should follow these cryptic messages given in these short segments
local 58 is something so special and its reality and its story telling is so brilliant and its something i wish to see more in the horror genre
It also exploits the most irrational fear of humanity.. The fear of the unknown. It doesn't show you what happens to the people who "Look into the Moon", except their muffled screams, it leaves it up to the people watching it, their imaginations to fill in the blank, which is in fact true horror.
Not to mention that each video is different enough in format to make it interesting... I found a copycat called Channel 7 a while ago, but they just ripped off Weather Service again and again and again, it got really boring.

kimi u for me the key to horror is getting the surreal factor just right, just enough to get into the audiences head. The kind of stuff that feels like a dream, and if horror comes into play, it feels like a nightmare. I think that cognitive dissonance of your brain feeling like it’s asleep but knowing it’s awake is what really sets scariness away from true terror. My first experience with this kind of surreal horror came from a scene in the babadook where the main character is watching the news late at night, and a story comes on about a 7 year old boy murdered at his birthday party and in the background of the b roll you could see a figure in the window, and all of a sudden it cuts to a close up of the figure and it is revealed to be the main character herself, smiling directly at the camera. The timing and the nature of this scene was done so perfectly that it literally felt like a nightmare. It only cut to her face for just enough time for your brain to comprehend it and then, bang, the light pops.
