RESTORING THE GEMINI 12

  • The original LOST IN SPACE miniature spaceship, The Gemini 12, was used only in the series pilot and in stock footage over the three years of the show. After being severely modified for use in a TV movie, the ship was hastily fixed up and sold at auction in 1980.
    The Gemini 12 disappeared for 35 years only to resurface as a restoration project by master model maker PAUL LUBLINER. This video tells the unique history of The Gemini 12 and how Paul took what was basically "a melted candy bar" and restored it to pristine condition. This video is in tribute to creator/producer IRWIN ALLEN on his 100th birthday (June 12, 2016)

    Thank you for your blood, sweat, and tears into my first childhood scifi love I shared with my Father. We faithfully watched Lost in Space, Voyage to the bottom of the Sea, and Star Trek. My dad could not afford a color TV until after he retired from the US Marines and by that time, this series was cancelled....We watched the show in Black and White. When it went into syndication, I watched every episode again in color after they switched to it during its production. I collected Lost In Space Memorabilia but had to let them all go during the Great Recession...

      I loved Lost in Space for the first season as serious sci fi with potential, but I lost interest in favor of Star Trek. Too bad they turned LIS into a cartoon with Smith screaming all the time and goofy monsters popping in and out.

    Amazing work!! And such selfless dedication! I’m as old as the show, so I saw it in reruns in the early 70s. I’m sure the show influenced me & played a part in my becoming a Submarine Nuclear Plant Operator. I hope the model does indeed earn a prominent display venue so us fans can enjoy it, amongst other period SciFi set pieces!!

      Mine too, I was a kid in the seventies and watched it in reruns. I'm now 54 and a couple of years ago I came home from a bar at like 3AM and to my great surprise Lost In Space was on the tv. I was buzzed and overjoyed, all my childhood memories came flooding back. I started watching and I lasted maybe 10 minutes and it was the worst thing I've ever seen. Bad acting, bad plot, bad special effects, just bad. My memory was that of childhood, and while the original Star Trek holds up, LIS does not. How do you let your kid go anywhere alone with a child molester like Dr. Smith, that guy was not to be trusted lol. I tried, I really did, but damn they actually aired that crap to the entire nation. Remember the talking carrots episode? It's a comedy now.

    While I loved LIS in the 60s - even though I was a kid - I knew the J2 dimensions were confusing. Its design just didn't compensate for 2 or 3 full sized decks, no way, no how. Even so - as a child I could suspend my belief and enjoy the show. And its sad to see key elements of the original series get thrown out completely and redesigned from the ground up in the Netflix reboot of LIS. The ship was the only thing that had a vague hint left to it. If I had been in charge of the designs I would hire only skilled artists with vision enough to modernize everything while maintaining the heart (feel) of the Jupiter 2, the Chariot and of course - the robot. The Netflix Reboot is essentially something other than the 60s LIS. The director and others in charge have lost their way, letting political correctness and pride get in the way. While progression means moving forward, I personally feel we need a connection to our past as a learning and evolving slate. But thats just my feelings on the matter. The pro side of the new reboot is - they didnt keep the stupidity that the original devolved to. The original forst few episodes were very serious - and it kinda went downhill in intelligence after that - lol. BUT IT WAS FUN! LOL

    It was so hard for me to watch the show, it was my favorite show as a child but I had to do my homework first and I couldn't always finish on time, and worse yet I would rush through my homework, get an f , and dinner would be ready early and I'd have to shut off the tv missing the last 10 minutes most of the time.

    Thanks for sharing this. I was a long time fan remembering the show when it was originally on television. My mother would never allow me to watch it because she thought it would give me night mares. When the show was syndicated in the early 70’s, my wish to see it finally came true. I always wanted to be Will Robinson, and live his t.v. adventures. In the mid 1980’s, I was shocked when I learned by chance, my employer was actually Bill Mumy’s brother In law. I was working in a high end restaurant in the Detroit area at the time, and Bill was going to be visiting while in town. I was flustered meeting him, but recovered and found him to be very friendly, and after our first meeting, would ask for me to wait on him whenever he was in town. I told him what a fan of the show I was, and since I didn’t have cable then, hadn’t seen the show in many years. He asked what my favorite episodes were, and to my surprise, a few weeks later, sent a VHS tape he dubbed himself with the pilot, my favorite episode, and his favorite episode. He included an autographed picture. Needless to say I was shocked and very pleased he took the time to be so kind. I still have the tape which has the label with his handwriting telling the name of each episode. He and I had contact several more times until I left the restaurant in the mid 90’s. I’ll always think how strange it was that I once knew my childhood hero.

    In response to previous contentious arguments -
    When you boil it all down to a thick broth, the fundamental beauty of Lost In Space is that it’s theme of fantasy left it open for interpretation within each individual. Whether the J-2 having a lower deck, power core, space pod, etc is plausible or not, who’s to say that this show in general didn’t pique a youngster’s interest and enthusiasm- perhaps one with the proclivity or aptitude for aeronautics, astrophysics to become somebody with innovations in the real world of science? Or even fictional productions of the future as well.
    We all could sit here all night long and pick it apart- even Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek, which was a more intellectually sophisticated show (even though to this day I adore LIS, with all its inconsistencies) yet it can be picked apart as well. Bottom line- this show (as others in the genre) brought a lot of joy and inspiration to many people. If things don’t align in one’s mind as to the effects/tech aspect, no big deal. It is a part of the fabric of our culture, and evokes many fond and poignant memories, as does John Williams’ music.

    • @varanid9
      @varanid9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Irwin's shows weren't noted for scientific accuracy. I'm pretty sure they thought "galaxy" was interchangeable with "star system". Then, a very, very few times they came up with some great sci-fi concepts like the "little bits of sunlight" in the generically titled season 2 opener, "Blast-off into Space" or the season one episode "Change of Space", with its intergalactic delivery ship. One thing I've always wondered about is this: if Alpha Centauri is 4-1/2 light years away, and the J2 can't travel faster than light, though it would take it that long to get there to the OUTSIDE observer, wouldn't it seem a lot quicker to the crew?

But prior to filming, this number was reduced to eight individual windows and the famous front mounted "manta fins" having also been simultaneously added.
      It must be said however, that Bill Creber indeed penned the nose modifications to the "Seaview" as dated: May 1965. There, the original 8 window two level "feature" and first season "Seaview" was changed to the single level, two-pair (four?) window variant with the enlarged underside accommodating his own designed and then new "Flying Sub".

      Well I do not know all the specifics but I do remember having a toy model of the Seaview that had a rubber band that you would wind up with a crank in the front and it spun the propeller in the back and I would play in the bathtub for as long as my Mom would let me. I guess I was 4 or 5 but I kept it until we got a built in pool when I was 14 and played with it in there (which was not considered very cool at the time). I remember it being Orange though, which does not make sense. Anyway it met it's demise when I went through my "blow everything up and set it on fire" stage Ah...memories :)

    Lost In Space left such an impression on me and I know 10's of Thousands of other kids back in the 60's. So much was happening back then...the Space Program with all the latest technology...computers were being born that would lead eventually to these marvelous devices we have now called "Smart Phones"...Lasers...Our International Space Station...Electric Cars...soon to be Fusion Reactors...the list grows endless. Irwin Allen planted seeds of the future in so many of us. Restoring the Gemini 12 may seem like a silly endeavor to a lot of people but to a select few it represents a window into the future that drew some of us like moths to a flame. Thanks for taking the time and the care to not just restore it but to give it a new and fresh life so that just maybe ... Some other wide eyed child might DARE to dream and help move us closer to that future that people like Irwin Allen and Gene Roddenberry, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and all the other Sci-Fi visionaries have painted for our imaginations. We can never stop dreaming...if we do...that can only spell..."Danger Will Robinson, DANGER!"...Namaste

    A terrific, wellzone video. I'm happy this series is finally (id belatedly) gaining attention, once again). The incredible sound effect of the ship powering up (which still gives me goose pimples) - that sound of the engines roaring to life and taking this incredible vehicle upward through the atmosphere (3:56), was done with...? A vacuum cleaner

    Each time I revisit this program about the restoration of the Gemini 12 filming miniature, I am thoroughly impressed. Returning the original shell to its original state, but then reinforcing the interior to assure an enduring result was the perfect strategy. I keep wondering if news of the missing reactor piece has ever surfaced. It seems like the sort of thing a collector might have preserved. (I also wish the team that worked on the Galileo 7 shuttle would have taken pointers from Mr. Lulbiner's work before they began their project.)

Growing up I would have loved to own The Jupiter 2, the Seaview, the Robot and of course Star Treks (TOS) U.S.S. Enterprise. This is true for today. Guess I'm a big kid.. LOL. It was wonderful to see this piece of history restored!! A fantastic job!! It was good to see the fusion core spinning the way it was designed to. Nothing today can replicate the exact way the lights seems to chase themselves. Not even LED's with the fancy electronics to make them spin can duplicate its effect. I would like to shake your hand. I have to admit that, as a kid in the 70's, I used to loathe that Dr. Smith character (nothing personal against Johnathan) he was just doing his job....Parker Posey also did a pretty good job of playing an unlikable creep in the Netflix version.

      I don’t think the series would have lasted through the first season without the villainy and comedy of Dr. Smith. I can recall hating him when I was in the second grade in 1966. Lost in Space was always a show directed at children. Looking at the show after so many decades, I find it comical how frightened I used to get when the Robertson’s were in danger!

    • @moonytheloony6516
      @moonytheloony6516 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Dr. Smith was the heart of the original show. The Robinson's needed a regular protagonist within their ranks and Dr. Smith was exactly what was needed at that time. His interactions with Will Robinson were not only important but instrumental in creating a relationship that encouraged younger viewers to tune in every week.
      So how are the creators fools? Clearly the decision worked very very well.
      Dr. Smith has become a beloved legend in the Sci-Fi world and clearly one of the most popular characters from the original show. Apparently that bothers you for some odd reason.
      Either you lack a sense of humor or simply don't get it, which is fine. I never accused you of having any brains inside of your head. That means my expectations of you has always been rather...low over the years, but I digress.
      You're clearly the minority in your opinion of Dr. Smith which is a good thing. Had you any creative influence on the show, your lack of vision would have ruined it completely.
      I do suspect that it's a blessing that you don't work in show business because everything you would create would have all of the fun & general appeal of having a root canal while attending a funeral at the same time.
