A couple of corrections: It was Gilligan's Island that was canceled because of Gunsmoke not Lost In Space. The full size Jupiter 2 appears in the first season as well as "Visit To A Hostile Planet". "Princess In Space" was filmed after "The Time Merchant" even though it was broadcast before the latter.
I always thought it was kind of funny when they’d be landing on an alien planet or wherever, and there would already be a perfectly sized white circle there to mark out their landing spot! 😃

@@outsider238 Did you say the 3rd season was your favorite? Because the 3rd season was also my favorite...because they traveled more and I found the new theme very entertaining. And we also finally got to see Penny transform into a new person. I know many people prefer the first season...but not me...I love the 3rd season best. I also wonder what new hairdo Judy and Penny would have had during season 4
Lost in Space is my favorite show of all time! So much fun to watch. I couldn't wait to get home from school to watch it on reruns in the afternoon!❤

Me Too in Australia in 70's reruns
Growing up in 1960's Perth, Western Australia, we only had 3 channels and all our TV was black and white back then. British and U.S. shows didn't get to us for about 3 years and I'm sure the local TV networks deliberately waited until they could buy 'second hand' shows at a cheap rate. How would we know? Perth was very isolated, no internet, overseas travel was very expensive and even long distance phone calls were $$$ so most of us had no idea we were so far behind. Lost in Space premiered here in 1968 at 7:30 Friday nights which was pretty well prime-time back then. It was HUGE! I don't recall a show getting so much pre-publicity and the yanks were making great progress with getting to the moon so the timing was perfect. Aged 8, I was madly in love with Judy even though Marta Kristen seemed to be made of wood! I wanted to be Don when I grew up - you know, feisty and fearless and would put people like Smith back in his box. And the B9 robot inspired me to a career in electronics, instrumentation and science. Modern TV shows don't inspire the young to anything other than defeatism and hopelessness. Thanks for making these videos about a golden era in American TV.
Thank you for putting together this compilation of bloopers. I was in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade when these episodes came out. I enjoyed these shows so much on Wednesday evenings. Will was just a few years older than me, and I identified with him. As a child watching these shows in simpler times, they were magic. Thanks again.

I remembered Will from the theatre movie Dear Brigitte with Bardot (he was like a child genius in it). And Cartwright from Sound of Music. And i think Natalie Wood would have made a better JUDY, so blah in her Forever Engagement while June Lockhart throws out her bra and moves in with some young guy like Doris Day

I can’t thank you enough for the detailed dissection of this TV series. I am 67 years old born in 1955 and I grew up with this serious, and have bonded to it ever cents. I don’t have words to thank you enough for taking the time to point out these things that I don’t think I ever noticed while I was watching. What a GREAT series! The "Shlockeyness" of the sets and the characters made the programs endearing.
I remember I was a small child when this series first started. I had seen it advertised on TV and was really excited wanting to see it. I was a big fan of all of the space activity that the US and NASA was involved in and such as mercury and Gemini and couldn't get enough. I remember the evening of the premiere of the show I was outside playing in the yard and it was sundown starting to get dark. I having a good time by myself and Mom stuck her head out the screen door and yelled at me,"that new show is coming on that you were wanting to watch" I completely forgotten that that was the evening that it started and if not for her I would have missed it, LOL. I ran inside and there was still a commercial plane but then the show started in black and white because we all had black and white TVs in and it was also filmed in black and white. All the high contrast with it being a night time seeing at night launch just added to the intrigue as far as my little brain and I was glued to it. 😂
All of the mission control setup and then the launch with the lights revolving around the bottom and the sound and then the absolute chaos when Dr Smith sabotage yes send everything haywire and all the forces of the ship moving so quickly making him scream in agony and pass out it was so impactful on me I will hooked!!! 🫣 Will Robinson and I were sort of the same age and I lived each adventure like I was right there, it was so great. 👍🏻 But that first episode and that evening I remember every detail like it was yesterday and how it impacted me, I am now 65 years old and still get a kick out of it.
There had never been anything on TV like that show, and people have to understand these days that we only had three channels then that we could pick up on the antenna and those channels went off the air at 10:30 or midnight and there was nothing on TV with a test pattern until around 6:30 in the morning. This is when TV did not rule our lives. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
William! That was an excellent comment! You really brought me back to my childhood! 😄 I felt the same watching it back then! And the test pattern! I forgot about those! I remember turning on the TV in the morning waiting for the test pattern to go off and the channel beginning their broadcast for the day. We only had a black and white TV so when we were finally able to afford a color TV, I was shocked to see how everything looked in color! Thank you for the walk down Memory Lane! 😁
I waited for a month for the premiere of the show as well, and the day it was to air, our tv died. To this day, I rejoice that my grandparents said I could come over to see the premiere on their set. A lot of people wouldn't give up their regular shows for anyone, grandchild or not.

I was in 5th grade, and was attending Conformation Classes at my Church..so I could take Communion ! Well, the classes were on Wednesday evening the Same Time Lost in Space was on TV, I was SO unhappy about missing the show. Now I watch the show I can Hardly watch it...It's SO Corney ! Irwin Allen's shows & movies were pretty Lame..Especially Land of the Giants. The cast was ALWAYS running from the giants and stopping to Catching there Breaths. Always !! lol !
William Scroggin • I'm with ya on the 60's TV experience. CBS, NBC, and ABC, that was it. In central Indiana we did have a station out of Bloomington. It was channel 4 but it was always snowy and they had the "technical difficulties" a lot. When something was broken or messed up we would say it's channel 4'ed. We didn't have a color TV until '69.
BTW dad bought the color TV specifically for watching the moon landing but the Apollo 11 coverage was in black and white anyway.

That full size Jupiter 2 was in no way large enough to house everyone including a 2nd level.
I agree! Plus they only ever showed 2 crew cabins and they would have needed room for two more and there wasn't enough room for two more! 😆
The hero Robot was on display at Marineland of the Pacific in Palos Verdes, CA, in the 70’s. I believe Marineland was owned by 20th Century Fox at the time, and they had a room with a bunch of artifacts from various Irwin Allen and 20CF shows and movies. I was there with my parents in July of ‘76, when I was 11 years old, and the Robot was one of the coolest things in the world for me then. I remember seeing the large filming model of the Seaview, and the Penguin’s submarine from the 1966 Batman movie, among other things. The Robot was still mostly as it was while filming LIS. It had the protective cover (painted red) over the neon tubes, and the torso and tread section were painted an odd matte light grey, with shiny Mylar tape (or something similar) accents on the circumferential ridges on the torso, but it was otherwise intact and unaltered, before it was cannibalized for that Skatebirds show, and long before the Kevin Burns restoration. It was in a large plexiglass case, with a button on the case that looked like it might activate the Robot in some way, but it didn’t do anything when we were there. My parents eventually had to drag me away, but not before my dad took a picture of my standing next to it, which I still have to this day. We had no idea it was there when we went to Marineland while visiting family in CA - it was one of the weirdly luckiest days of my life.
Season three brought back more serious stories for a while the Jupiter 2 becomes a character and the Space Pod was awesome Had the View Master
I also like that they were moving back in space again and not stuck on a planet.
This show should have had 5 seasons
When they finished season three, and were going to come back for season four, everyone was contacted over the summer hiatus being told the show was cancelled, the budget was one of the reasons, so I believe.

You said the writer was out of ideas with the veggie episode. They should have hired new writers and whatever other show makers they needed. The show was at its peak in season three. I’m also surprised another network didn’t pick it up.

@@gingerhill9044 Yes. I can see if Jonathan Harris didn’t want to continue, or maybe any of the other stars, but this show had high viewership so it had to be making the studio and network money.
I appreciate you doing this compilation. I've noticed a lot of them myself because I was addicted to the show when I was a kid. And intentionally over looked them because I didn't want to ruin it for myself. Lol
Hahaha!!! Yeah, even as a kid I noticed some of these as well. But now they just make me appreciate more what all goes into making a TV show. Especially back then. 😁
Definitely a "Tardis effect" going on with the Jupiter 2. It was so much larger inside than it was outside. You had to make room for the space pod, the chariot, all those bedrooms, that third power level, and somewhere, there had to be a bathroom.
Maybe it is because of the Invaders from the 5 Dimension. They had a ship that was " Bigger on the inside than on the outside." When their ship self destructed it could of distorted reality and a new reality replace it but the Roberson don't remember the previous reality. In the new reality the Jupiter is bigger on the inside than the outside. In the new reality bigger on the inside than the outside is normal.

And also remember... Will had room to actually stand up and hide in his closet in the episode "2 weeks in Space".....figure that one out!!??
If the Enterprise with over 400 personal can go on a five year mission with no bathroom then the Jupiter II can go without one. (Scotty did explain why no bathroom. Why do you think everyone has a phaser?
@@francisdhomer5910 LOL I do have a copy of the Enterprise deck plans and there are bathrooms all over the place. I wonder if they just never told Scotty and he thought he'd just use the transporter room.
I read somewhere where Johnathan Harris said many times the glue holding monster costumes together was still wet when they were taping. They really threw this thing together. My favorite episodes:
* Trip Through the Robot
* The Keeper
* The Golden Man
* Fugitives in Space
* The Colonists
* Two Weeks in Space
Trip through the robot was my mum's favourite episode.
What do you mean as kids we didn't notice? I noticed most of these as a kid. The hokey backdrops, the cables, the bad special effects,a nd so on. I think that is why it became such a campy show instead of serious. I think they may have wanted to play it off more serious, like Star Trek originally, but th eDr. Smith angle turned it into anything but serious. There was the store room, utility room, the backroom for the computers, and such that seemed to be the same access way into the "scuttlehole" or an area around the ring of the ship where the outer panels angled down. But once inside, the room was larger than the rest of the ship.
The location of the space pod was in the outer ring, which should have been angled but inside the pod was taller than a standing man. this season allowed the Jupiter 2 to be as roomy inside as Doctor Who's TARDIS or the Weasley's tent.
How many noticed the really big goof? The trip was to Alpha Centauri, the closest solar system to our own. It was going to take over 5 years to get there, but magically, they made it to other planets by mistake. Now wait, how far are those other planets?
MUCH further than Alpha Centauri, so they should have taken years to get there. Even a "hyperdrive" excuse was crazy, as then why didn't they just use hyperdrive to get back to where they wanted to be?
15:01 is the most fascinating episode when I was a kid because in several episodes (I think) we saw that door that went TO the reactor room and of course Will was never allowed to go in there. Then in this episode we finally get to see what's in there.....and we weren't disappointed. The special effects and set decorators did a GREAT job with this scene.
Yes it was very cool to finally see what was down there. Probably a nice place to relax to get away now and then. 😁
I was also intrigued by the reactor room door as a kid. It looked like something that would make me want to see inside even if I wasn't supposed to! LOL
Worth noting... those explosions were practical effects done live. In an interview, Jonathan Harris did say they were LOUD. Over on that other show, Shatner says he and Nimoy both suffered lifelong tinnitus while filming the explosion scene in the ST ep "Errand of Mercy." That kind of effect would never be done that way today. (Although ST Discovery has a thing for flame-throwers on the bridge.)
I remember William Shatner talking about that explosion. It's amazing they were willing to risk so many possible accidents on set. But then again, sometimes it's the actors that insist on doing their own stunts. That one with Bill Mumy is shocking that they had him do that. Especially as a child actor.
June Lockhart told an interviewer that her biggest on-set challenge was "...avoiding getting killed by the explosions".

The explosives and gas bombs used in that era were also very nasty smelling and toxic as well. Not everything was so good in the good old days 😄
Was always a huge fan of this series. Back when they made the theatrical movie in 1998, the was going to make a TV rescue movie with the surviving original cast and I was so pumped for that. Why it fell through who knows, but it was something the fans would’ve loved.
They shelved it because sadly, Jonathan Harris passed away before filming could begin.
the monster - close-up of a lizard with head attachments, was footage from Allen's feature Lost World, starring Michael Rennie.
the control panels(with loads of small flashing lights) you see on the ship, show up in other series of Allen's series. the master of disasterwas also master of re-using props and stock footage. the studio loved his economy-minded approach, I guess; it improved the bottom line.I think the robot, designated as model B-9, at some stage was a great creation, its bubble head had internal structure like a vacuum tube - still in use back then, whilst the transistor brcame more used in electronics.
all in all, the show was kept fast-paced, so mistakes were tolerated, acceptable for cost and scheduling reasons.I think like TOS Star Trek,LIS will re-run frever,LIS will get funnier as time passes, imo - a family that goes on an inter-stellar camping excursion. thanks for vid. I remember kids and adults became hooked on viewing it. like Phil Silvers show, it could have been renamed the Jonathan Harris Show, mebe :). unlike the long, boring LIS movie, it had charisma and some wit. my 2 cents...in sme ways, similar to fate of transfer of Batman to the big screen. in the 60's (post WW2) most people wanted to laugh, more than just watch a series of FX scenes with wooden acting, such productions will be mainly forgotten. good.
My favorite show of all time. I once had the good fortune of spending an afternoon with June Lockhart. She was so nice & generous with her time. She was a guest speaker at a convention & I was a radio host who interviewed her. During the interview we hit it off & she invited me to come out to the convention the following day as her guest. I did & we just spent the afternoon just chatting about her time on the show & what the other cast members were doing. She also shared a good deal about her family including her daughter Ann Lockhart & her time spent on Battlestar Galactica. This was back in the 90s. I remember that afternoon fondly. She was very nice & for a fan of LIS since the 60s like myself it was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
I had a crush on her daughter Ann even if I was just 10 years old :) . I loved Lost in Space reruns too after seeing BSG.
@@Daehawk I can totally dig it. I had a crush on Veronica Cartwright back in the 60s even though she was like a teen & I was only about 9 or 10 at the time. I thought she was fine but also an older woman! LOL

Spending an entire afternoon with June Lockhart was very cool. She was very easy to converse with and really down to Earth.
@@johnnie2638 I was the same age as you, and while Angela was always very pretty, I didn't find her crush-worthy until the 3rd season, when she "blossomed" and filled out that silver space-suit so nicely. Marta was always super-hot!
As a kid I adored this show! I especially enjoyed the banter between the Robot and Dr. Smith and the way they would verbally insult each other.
Dr. Smith, Will Robinson and the Robot are my favorite characters! 😊❤️

That was GILLIGAN'S ISLAND that was already renewed for a fourth season but was cancelled to save GUNSMOKE and in fact occurred a year earlier.
The view masters by GAF were so crystal clear I loved them had a blast with the lost in space version especially when they are in the ice house where people were frozen I believe are an ice prison

Just wanted to chime in.. I was a kid in the 60's and watched this prime time. Back in the 2000's, my son was an artist and sculptor. He displayed his work at Wonderfest in Louisville, KY. I met Mark Goddard, Bob May and Marta Kristen. I also met the builder of a replica robot who worked for Eastman Kodak. Mark Goddard was absolutely hilarious! Bob May came across as a used car salesman and milked out his part on Lost in Space for the rest of his life. Marta decades later was still very attractive.

You have shattered me... I watched Lost in Space in the 60's when I was a kid and all my life I thought it happened on a real planet.
Now, after watching your series, I realise it was made in a film studio (LOL)
So, I am still a fan and would like to add some bloopers and observations to your list !!
Firstly: My favourite episode: His Majesty Smith
Blast off into space: Dr Smith's statue is drunk on Cosmonium and smashes the charriot window...but next scene John arrives on the jetpack and shoots the monster away....you can see the charriot windows are not damaged.
Lasers: The effects people seem to do freeze-frame whenever the lasers are used, presumeably to make it easier to add the laser effect. But when Hapgood carves his name into a rock, you can see the laser doesn't quite match his hand movement...probably too hard to do laser in motion effect at that time...also, in the closing scene of One of Our Dogs is Missing, you can see the light come on on the laser pistol but no laser beam...maybe because it was a motion scene....i think the the light on the laser pistol was used so that actors would know when they are being shot at?
Campsite: The bottom edge around the Jupiter2 looks different to the one that flies in space...btw, we never get to see what's around the other side of the ship .... actors often come and go from around that left side side of the ship.
The Keeper: At the end of part 1 when Dr Smith releases the monsters, he and the robot escape and run down the ramp of the Keeper's space ship....if you look closely...it looks to me like Dr Smith is holding the robot's shoulder lug to help balance the robot....dont want the robot to fall over again!
Jelly Bowls: They are used with flashing lights in many episodes where the aliens wave their hands over them to make something happen.
The Challenge: Quano and Will take spears into the cave to fight the monster and Quano trips over a rock and gets knocked out. The close up of Quano tripping on the rock is such bad acting...he pretended to trip on the rock!
His Majesty Smith: I love the scene when the Master makes a duplicate of Dr Smith....it looks to be done in one take and Dr Smith would have had to really scramble to get around to the other side in time. You can see the master is waving the controls while watching and waiting until Smith is ready and the background sound effects mask any commotion. At the end of the episode, the Master says "even your forcefield(s) cannot stup us but the Android Nexus says "forcefield"
A lot of series 1 episodes have double shadows on the ground, presumeably from multiple studio lights.
Curse of Cousin Smith: The close up of cousin smith doing card tricks is obviously a card-sharp, not the actor.
I want their washing machine: It washes, dries, presses and wraps clothes in plastic, all in 10 seconds and in one take!
Stunt Doubles: (here are a few but I am sure there are many more)
* One of our Dogs is Missing: Judy and Don rolling down off the rock when escaping the monster
* Space Prime Evils: Dr Smith and Don are trapped underground. A stunt double for Dr Smith can be seen walking down the rocks.
* Trip Through the Robot: Dr smith is caught in some machinery...obvious stunt double

Hi Gerry! Thank you for the comment! You bring up some very interesting points! I never noticed the glass on the Chariot not being broken in that scene! I did mention the light on the laser gun in "One Of Our Dogs Is Missing" in my season 1 blooper video. They did have to freeze in order for the effect of the laser to look right as they couldn't make the laser follow the motion of the actors back then or it was very expensive to do so. They would also freeze frame the scene sometimes so the actors wouldn't have to but it was more obvious. Also the light let the special effects guys know when to add in the laser effects. I always noticed the bottom of the full size Jupiter 2 looked off. Like they should have covered it with more sand so that you can't see that's it's vertical on the bottom! Haha! The others I noticed as well but I didn't know if I should mention them since they weren't as bad as the other bloopers. I felt bad enough tearing the show apart as it was! 🤣😆
Real planet is called earth.
Back in those days as a 6-year-old I could hardly wait until the next episode. _Lost In Space_ was a *cool* show! I remember seeing Michael Conrad on some episodes of _The Rockford Files._

My wife thought Lost was on the same line of Star Trek. Once I got her into it, I always wondered where the main actors went to. Harris, Mumy & The Robot ruled the show. Loved it, as it was funny, instead of being a fantasy show.. 🛸
Another fun video of bloopers. You mentioned that the bubble on the robot was the face and head. All these years I did not know that. I did like the first season as it was more serious and not so silly and I enjoyed all the guest stars they had on the show. Thanks for all of your work making these videos.

Growing up as a little kid in the early 70s, I always wanted some of the mens velour uniforms. All of the colors used were pretty cool. Also, if there would have been a 4th season, I always wondered what colors they would have chosen for their velour uniforms.
They were pretty cool. It's too bad Velour doesn't hold up well over the years when it comes to colors. So many costumes made for shows back then out of Velour have faded pretty badly over time.
I liked their uniforms too especially the girls and the mother. I also wondered how they kept their hairstyles so nice living on the spaceship.

Thank you for this. It brings back so many great memories from my childhood. I was in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade while this was new on TV. My brother and sister and I never missed an episode. Even though we were young, we noticed many of the screw ups and used that as evidence to try to prove to each other that the show was fake as if it was otherwise real. I recall commenting every time that when the robot had to traverse down some step(s) or across some large rocks which would be impossible with his treads, the camera would just cut away and in the next scene he was at the bottom of the steps or on the other side of the rocks. When we visited our cousins and neighborhood friends we would argue for hours about what parts of the show were fake and which were 'real'. The screw ups, pathetic props, poor camera work, and weak editing was actually what made it most appealing to us kids. Too funny.
But if you watch episode 1 season 1 you'll see the robot can actually use his treads independently like feet , a very slow and lumbering walk but still a walk , that would explain how he manages steps and transverse some rocky spots, I believe they only showed him using that capability once in all three seasons
Fantastic. I'm just surprised that you didn't include the episode when Will is transported back to Earth during his time period (not back in time.) I would love to have heard your comments about a small town in the late 20th Century still using phones from the 1920s.
They did say it was a very backward town.
I should have mentioned that. It never made sense to me at all! 😄
That was my favorite episode! I was also hoping you would include it. As for the phones, the Andy Griffith show also had the old phone type in the sheriff's office and in the kitchen of his house.

The second lizard footage is from The Lost World (1960). Irwin Allen produced and directed that film for Fox. He used footage on his other shows as well.

I enjoy your enthusiasm. It was a great show, I looked forward to watching it every day after school and even now the characters are entertaining enough for reruns. I was fortunate to work on the Fox lot from 1999 to 2009, it's remarkable walking past those soundstages knowing what has happened within those walls all these decades.

I'm watching the whole series again as we speak. Sadly on DVD (I don't have the BluRays so no commentary for me) - but its still terrific fun to watch. I really like the craziest episodes: teenage hippies in control of serious adults, motorbike rocket riding space hippies demolishing a planet, Dr Celery Smith, and also the campy acting / stories, the reused sound effects, props, and scenery, the way the Pod and huge extra level on the Jupiter 2 just appeared (no explanation), and so on. The story I remembered most from the 1970's was Journey Through the Robot. The whole series has such a charm and innocence that is so refreshing today. Just such a shame Guy Williams left acting for good after Lost in Space wrapped ... blame in on The Vegetable Rebellion ??
As far as the robot being able to step up onto an even surfaces since the beginning of the season you could see a separation in his legs all the way down to the tracks and the ground. I as an imaginative person always figured the robot would be able to circumnavigate formidable environments. Otherwise what good would it be. Just my two cents. I love anything sci-fi Lost in space keep going this is a great thing that I'm watching even if I disagree from time to time. Thank you for going to the work to do it

Loved this as a kid and now in my 60s I have the box set and still love to watch it.
One thing I can tell you is that at a sci fi convention many years ago before they died, I got to meet Bobby, Dick and Mark Goddard. (at other events thru the years I also got to meet everyone else except Guy) and Bobby May was asked how many robot costumes there were and he said there were at least 3, the hero one, the lighter stunt one you talk about here and one of which also had a lighter weight mid section that he would wear occasionally in close ups without ANY of the leg part down, not just the rubber tread section, which was out of camera shot. After getting the discs of the show, I checked out certain scenes to see if I could see any differences in some close ups of the robot and if you pause and look closely, you can indeed tell which one was the lighter weight mid section by a slight change in the tone of the paint, variations in the buttons and other small details such as the thickness of the silver raised lip of the suit around the tube light in front inconsistent with the hero costume and I am talking about scenes other than those you featured here as that same lighter weight version was also used in season 2. Might still not explain that back section cut out but interesting nonetheless.
That would make sense. A third torso just for close ups from the waist up. There is a picture floating around showing Bob in that costume where there's no legs at all. Just Bob's legs sticking out. We (The B9 Builders Club members) just assumed they used the same torso for the hero and "Bermuda Shorts" version.

I was 10, 11, and 12 y/o when this show came out. I had the biggest crush on Penny Robinson. I was (and still am) upset when they didn't come back the next year. No explanation...no nothing. I loved anything to do with space travel. At the time, this was state of the art.
I was gaga for the hunky handsome Mark Goddard. Used to watch it after school in the early 70's.

12:50 Independently blinking lamps will do that sometimes. They used a flexing bi-laminate contact in them that would bend when heated, cutting off the current flow to the filament.
It's probably something that maybe only a female viewer would notice, but I on reflecting on the "Visit" episode noted that Marta Kristen's hairstyle had changed - without notice - particularly in the scenes where Craig (Robert Pine) takes her prisoner...and after John and Don come to her rescue, Judy's hair reverts to the way it was at the beginning of the episode! And nobody comments or just completely ignores it! :D
Has anyone discussed in any detail as to why the production crew (set designers) created a Jupiter Two for the set that was schematically incorrect? When J2 is in full set shot, it is remarkably smaller in size and scale to that of the size it is supposed to be on the inside? Yeah, I understand that this is just a set piece, and it is not to true scale, but did they stop to think that its size and scale would not come into question? ...that the Jupiter Two is only one story tall as a set piece but in actuality it cannot possibly have two levels inside from that set design; as in one-to-one scale, the inside of the full J2 clearly shows that it could not have two levels. At least in 'Forbidden Planet' they got the scale of the craft more correct. But I always found it to be one of the biggest problems for 'Lost In Space' set pieces. Obviously, they could not build a full scale Jupiter Two on set due to the actual size and scale and limited set space. But come one, at least try.
Look, they had space junkmen, Alien hippies and murderous vegetables. You think they’re really gonna care if the got the J2 to perfect scale? Let it go man. 😊
Awesome stuff! I probably noticed some of this as a kid but because I was a kid it didn't really register or I didn't care. Also remember we were watching it on 19" TV's. Loved this show so much.
Oh wow, the Viewmaster! Yes, I had this episode on my Viewmaster!! A great piece of kit for the time :) It was the first time I learned that the Robot's claws were red!
I have really enjoyed this series of videos...thank you so much. Some added information for you:
- The full size mock up J2 did, indeed, deteriorate badly but not because it was left unprotected. There are number of production photos taken for the first Apes move wherein you can see the J2 in the background on its castor wheels (it could be wheeled about) and covered with a big tarp. The tarp, sadly, did not keep out the humidity and the hull of the ship was painted masonite. The humidity and termites just ate it all up. Towards the end of its time on the lot a son of a Fox exec wanted to transfer the ship to another location so he could keep it. An inspection was done with a view to putting it on a truck. It was so badly termite-ridden that it was decided to bulldoze it. The landing legs were kept and you can see them used as props in the second Apes movie where they represent buckled landing gear of the crashed astronaut's ship.
-The bluray team made a search for bloopers in the Fox film archive but they were never found. Many believe that Irwin was not fond of having a record of mistakes and they were routinely destroyed as they happened.
-There may have been as many as three stunt robots because they kept getting so badly banged up.
-Peter Packer had, indeed, run dry of ideas BUT a couple of new writers were being considered for the proposed fourth season and I believe that a couple of scripts were actually written.
-None of the actors knew that the Junkman episode would be their last. They were told to report back after the filming hiatus for the new season. The first they knew that things were finished was most likely phone calls from their respective agents. Poor Bill (at that time "Billy") was so upset be cried for many hours. He really loved working with Jonathan and that love was mutual, I'm sure. The filming crew and Irwin loved them as well. They never missed their stage marks, they rarely fluffed their lines and there was a real chemistry between Jonathan, Bill and Bob May.

It's really too bad that the bloopers couldn't be found or were destroyed. I, as well as other LIS fans would love to see them. I bet there was some funny and interesting bloopers! @@outsider238 Apparently the young man had a farm or similar to park the J2. The construction blueprints still exist so an enterprising (no pun intended to Trekkers!) builder could duplicate it. That's how they made the recent Chariot replica. Kevin Burns (RIP) of Synthesis Entertainment (LIS rights holder) sent a copy of the blueprints to the builder.
I would love to see a replica made of the J2, wouldn't you?
There were stuff ups on set during filming...squib explosions going off too late or too early and props failing to do what they were supposed to do. Actors fluffing their lines, of course (but rarely Bill, Jonathan or Bob) and unintended crack ups, especially during "The Great Vegetable Rebellion," as you know. The best person to ask about bloopers would be Bill Mummy. He doesn't accept FB PMs but you can contact him via his agent, Sharron Elkabas...you can Google her contact details.

Kevin Burns owned parts of the original robot including the original neon, the Bermuda Shorts, the stone molds for the torso, arms and legs as well as the jigs for the Robot's collar pieces. He also had the "Duplicate Robot". Do you know what became of those after Kevin's passing?

To me, season 3 took the best aspects of seasons 1 and 2, and had a new titles sequence to give the new show a sense of excitement, which was badly needed by then.
Season 3 did get tropey with the Smith/Will/Robot triple act, but it's still fun.
A shame 3 was the last.
The veggie rebellion episode is loony enjoyable fun.
The hiplie episode is like watching a clown car train wreck - cringeworthy yet fun at the same time.
Good callout for the blu-ray set! Those commentaries are worth the price.
The time merchant episode, if i recall, explains the real worth of Dr Smith. Had he not been there, the Robinsons would all have died. It's a nice touch, especially for a seemingly throwaway kid show.
Irwin Allen loved reusing props. Perhaps too often, which also shows how precious little they got to spend, especially in scripts where they say they're not familisr with humans but - oops - there are human statues. Like the episode where Smith steals the shuttlecraft lander and opens the door to find the necklaced blobby clone critter that wants to know why humans are different (not a bad episode as it gives the main actors a chance to do other than their regular stuff!)
Definitely wish they had a 4th year... did ratings dip and the network wanted to wring out as many episodes as possible with even less funding?
Excellent comment! I was told that the ratings were still very good for a fourth season but the studio wanted to cut the budget and Irwin Allen refused and simply decided to not go with a fourth season unfortunately.
Perhaps the reason for no Lost in Space Bloopers is the same reason Leave It to Beaver has no Bloopers. Jerry Mathers states in an XM Sirius interview available on the DVD set that every time a mistake was made, the film was stripped and reused to save money. On a different note for you who like bloopers that can only be found on DVD: In the Bewitched episode "How Green Was My Grass", Samantha is pulling out of the driveway with Tabitha. If you slow down the video (slo-mo) you can see the entire crew filming the scene in the driver's sideview mirror.

If this is what Jerry Mathers said, then he was confused. There is no way to “reuse” motion picture film, once it has been exposed. What he might have been trying to say was that they didn’t process or print the deleted footage, but that’s also unlikely, because it’s all shot continuously on any given reel of film, and you pretty much have to process the entire reel. More likely, he was confusing the use of film and videotape, which was commonly reused. But LITB was never recorded on tape. Most likely, the bad takes were just edited out of the film and discarded.
I immensely enjoyed your three presentations. You certainly have the show pegged! I always thought it was uncanny how Dr. Smith suddenly had uniforms and his own quarters even though he was allegedly a stowaway. Also, the little custom-made niche for Bloop. Like the dog that you pointed out; the monkey also disappeared. I imagine it would be more economical to not procure animals and trainers on the set, not to mention zookeepers. Perhaps they had additional space for the 1st floor and the space pod after the cages were removed! Your productions were very informative. Thanks for all of your hard work and for your stellar series!

Really enjoy your commentary. You are outstanding at pointing out interesting facets of the show. Also really enjoy your playful affection for this ridiculous TV series. It’s amazing how much you find to appreciate in this program. Your love for lost in space is obvious and infectious! I was eight years old when the TV series premiered. I had huge high hopes for it. I was obsessed with lost in space for about six or seven episodes. Then it turned stupid. Stupid even in the eyes of an eight-year-old. And over time I slowly had to admit to myself that lost in space was utterly totally lost in dumbness. My interest waned.
Thank you so much! I think when the show turned campy, it really divided the audience. Some loved the direction it took, some didn't. I think the first season is most people's favorite. But it started changing relatively early on. I love it because of how cheesy it is and watching it as an adult now makes me realize how much they were able to get away with back then involving production, sets and props. The Robot was the main reason I watched the show and my eyes were glued to the TV whenever he was on.

Great stuff. I was surprised you didn't mention that whenever the robot moves, it is being pulled by a sometimes very visible cable. It's fun to try and spot when they pull too hard and Bob May rocks back and forth a little bit. Sometimes you see that cable dragging across the floor. There's a spring loaded device attached to the robot's tread section that keeps it from rising up too much, so it keeps a low profile against the ground. They do a pretty good job of hiding it. Once in a while you can see the other actors step on it.
I mentioned it in the Season 2 video and show a scene where it's very visible. The episode was "Ghost Planet". 😁

Hi, Andrew from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia here. I loved this show as well as Star Trek TOS. Being a gay Aussie, I loved the high camp stuff in it. Johnathon Harris scream was a total pisser. I loved the outtakes. I bought the Blu-ray discs but I'm redoing my man cave with better equipment. It's a legend of a series. Space 1999 was not far off. It's sad that many of the actors we love to this day have passed away. Boy it was fun. Kids today have no clue. Cheers Andrew.

Personally, my favorite season was the first. I thought the "Vegetable Rebellion" was ridiculous, so I understand why the cast was laughing. June Lockhart said they sometimes forgot their lines when an explosion happened. Jonathan Harris said the network wanted to cut the budget by a lot, or else write someone out, and Irwin wouldn't compromise, so they canceled the show.
It's a shame the network tried cutting the budget on a show that was clearly a hit for them. The commentary on the Vegetable Rebellion episode is funny to listen to!
I was a child when LIS was first broadcast. There were no VCR's not any hope of Re-Runs for at east a decade such that TV was more like a book where imagination was needed to fill-in the gaps. Most kids were watching on a B&W TV 20" or smaller. Don't forget poor reception from OTA TV, this was pre Cable TV. Who knows the resolution! Inspecting frame by frame decades later sorta unfair if serious. For fun, it's a lot of laughs, thanks for posting.
Haha! Yeah that's something the creators of these shows thought they didn't have to worry about since they knew we were all watching on small, low resolution TVs back then. Now we can pause, zoom in and study every frame in high definition and see all the things they got away with!🤣😁

In the fire Marshall Smith scene of Visit to a Hostile Planet, I’m pretty sure that black plastic sheeting had not been invented, or at least wasn’t in wide use.

in middle school i built my own jupiter 2 only about 6 inches around, and no problem putting in a space pod with it not showing in the front window. I remember the poles to the tripod legs were made of mini-straws. Front window was soft vinyl like the freeze-tubes inside. Silver paint back then came off on your fingers. I also recall spilling the blue paint on my bed and hiding it so mom doesnt see it. Sold it to a kid for $10 because others said i was a big baby to have made it.
I actually liked The Promised Planet. Smith wasn't really turned into a hippie, he just started acting like one so he could worm his way in to their system. And as long as Penny was in the miniskirt and GoGo boots, why not get a little GoGo dancing out of her. And conceptually, a society where they never matured past post-puberty, therefore needed blood, or DNA, or whatever from the Robinson kids, is an interesting idea that could have been explored, had they been given a 4th season.
At 12:04, it shows John handling a laser gun while wearing his space helmet and O2 tank. It appears he's not in a pressurized area, so shouldn't he be wearing gloves also? I may just be viewing it out of context. I love how Dr. Smith dances in the episode, The Promised Planet. I think by this point in the series, they decided to go all in with the silliness. How the actors kept a straight face with Smith dancing in that wig and wearing love beads, I don't know.

Pretty well known fact that Gunsmoke was the main reason given for the show Gilligan's Island not being given a fourth season. William Paley's wife was a huge fan of Gunsmoke and when she found out it wasn't coming back, she convinced her husband to save it. This meant that Gilligan's Island was sacrificed to make room on the schedule.
Haha! Yeah, over the years it seems like Gunsmoke has been blamed for the cancelation of several shows. Guess they were the scapegoat for the end of a lot of shows. 🤣

The dimension of the J2 drove me nuts as a kid, and more than likely, I drove my parent nuts with questions. How did the chariot and the pod fit in that ship? How did all the people fit in that ship? It was bigger on the inside than the outside. On some planet you only saw the first floor from the outside. Where was the second and third level? Why were they underground?
They took technical notes from the episode "Invaders from the 5th Dimension."
I'm fairly certain the chariot was stored disassembled. I seem to recall Don talking about assembling the chariot at at least 1 point.
Space pod, chariot and the power core confused me also. I would look up cut away images trying to find where everything went. I think they should have increased the size of the jupiter to make it more realistic. Keep its looks of course. Great series! Id say, Lost n Space, Star Trek, Space 1999 were my all time favorite space series.

Watching this is a lot of fun, thank you for your hard work. I watch Lost in Space on a local station at midnight each weeknight. Two nights ago was the Great Vegetable Rebellion, so I thought last night would be Junkyard in Space, but it was Fugitives in Space, which is an excellent episode and as you mentioned, Michael Conrad plays Creech. That whole judge and jury set must have cost a lot to make with a lot of effort and time as well. James Millhollin was absolutely superb as Willoughby in the Rebellion. He's one of my favorite characters from the show - the personality, outfit, look and of course the actor, made Willoughby come to life. All those qualities despite having a heart made of lettuce poor fella. Professor Robinson, even asks him if he'd like to join them, as they prepare to leave, but he graciously declines explaining that Tybo will need him. I think we can tell James very much enjoyed playing him. I'm old enough to have enjoyed the re-runs from about 1970 or so - always been a favorite of mine. Excellent work compiling all these! Just wanted to add a mention of something that would be reused in a future Irwin Allen series. At 10:28, during a scene from "The Space Destructors," as Will is coming to the end of the conveyor, you see him bracketed by two curved frames with blue lights. These will appear a few years later as the video projectors located inside The Time Tunnel! They would enter the tunnel from either side just before they received the picture from where Tony and Doug were. Good ol' Irwin :-)

When the finally made a "full size" free standing J2, even when I was little, I wondered HOW did they fit all those people and all that equipment into that TINY, TINY ship?!! You've got 6 people, a robot, living quarters, the space buggy, and the space pod that all are supposedly to fit inside this little round spaceship. There's NO WAY all of these tings could fit inside that itty bitty saucer shaped ship, and have room for storage, much less an engine!!
With a show made as cheaply as this though, theres lots and lots and LOTS of faux pas and boo-boo's to be had!! LOL
My favorite episode that I can remember is the one where Dr Smith makes copies of himself. I remember that weird electronic music/sounds they had for the machine creeped me out so bad, I just ended up loving the sounds. Weird, huh?
As for the panel on the back of the stunt robot, I would say it probably got damaged at some point, and thats what they did to repair it.
I still have my Viewmaster edition of this episode! The 3D look was so crisp and clear, it was like you were actually on the set.
Yes! Viewmasters 3D effects were amazing! Sometimes even scary depending on the one being looked at. 😄
