    Recently retired from a large hospital/research center that had over 500 drives from 1 to 1750 HP. I often replaced existing drives and had a great Danfoss tech only charge around $300 to do the start up and extend the parts & labor warranty to 3 years. Win win. He worked on nothing but VFD'S for 30.years. He had to go to his car once to get programing book. It was a inch thick. Amasing what you can now program into the newer drives. When I worked on a drive for the first time ( 1981 ) it only had a few pots to adjust ramp up & down, torque and a few others. In newest building over 90% of 5 HP & higher.were on a drive. Motors 40 HP & higher were on 18 pulse drives. The 200 HP fire pump was on a soft start drive.

    One thing that You should always do first before attempting to set any other parameters is to do a factory reset for the poor thing.
    I have four of these animals in my workshop and when those arrived, each of them had a slightly different setup. This might be because of the factory testing process and maybe the supplier has also tried to preprogram them to "enhance" end user experience.
    The parameter for setting the factory defaults is PD013 and the value should be set to 8. After setting this parameter to 8 the device will revert to factory settings and boot itself. This gives a known startpoint for configuring the VFD.

      Can the inverter also programmed without a wired motor? or is it needed that the motor is connected first? I don't want to blow the motor because of potetional wrong settings

      @@mt8385 That's a really good question. To be honest, I don't know.
      It might be possible to do the programming without a motor. At least it shouldn't zap anything. However, the device might get into a state where it does not allow programming. I have never tried this out so all this is just speculations.

      It's possible vfd might get damaged without load attached.

      After writing my question I found a statement, that recommends doing the initial setup without a motor. Some HY vfd has the freq setting in default set to 50 and as a result you will burn the motor

    I wasn't able to remember the sequence of pressing down the appropriate buttons in order to program certain functions. Is there a way you could explain this in a separate video or perhaps send me an instructions on programming. The manual supplied with my VFD is presented in such a way that I don't understand programming procedure at all. I learnt a bit from your video but still not enough to do it on my own.

      i have to say that long time ago i have been thinking about it. but i havent put it in yet. i burnt 2 vfds before and now im trying not to run them too hard, or to do more than they can handle. i guess it should work and i'm sure it is working for other people. but I lost confidence with them and i don't feel like i will get it back. but to your question, I think i saw some options for the spindle speed up and slow down in programing settings of the spindle.

    Hi, We connected the huyang vfd and set all the parameters that we think they are correct (pd settings on vfd). We encountered srtrange problem while testing the spindle. Everything works correctly while ccw is enabled but when we try cw the spindle has some problems. Cannon maintain the 120hz we set as minimum on vfd setting slows down and speeds up and in general it behaves srtange (it only happens when the spindle is working in cw direction). Also the vfd never achives the set 400 Hz (the 355 is upper limit) Sometimes (more often then not the spindle speed fluctuates).
    Any ideas?
    btw: jest szansa, że jesteś z Polski? 🙂

      I'm not an expert on vfd settings. I just found settings which work for mine spindle and it should work for most people. From this what you are saying it looks like 2 possible issues. Number of poles are not right. Or your cable to spindle is bad quality. Try changing pole number and if this doesn't help try shortening the cable to something like 50cm. Just to test if it behaves differently if so then you need better cable

    If your spindle has 4 poles (as your VFD is configured?), wouldn't you need 800 Hz to run it at 24000 RPM? Doesn't the "rated motor current" for programming the VFD refer to what's shown on the side of the motor (6.6 Amps?)? Did Jian-ken provide performance data (speed, torque, and voltage curves" for the spindle? Does your spindle testing video show the VFD's readout of motor current? If so, what parameter(s) did you set to enable it?

    Hello! I was going to buy 2.2 kW water cooled spindle and there are two versions available, 220V and 380V. Is there any practical difference between them? (especially risk of burning the VFD).

    • @PiotrFoxWysocki
      @PiotrFoxWysocki  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      to me there is no difference in power or performance, its 2.2kw no matter if it's 220 or 380. i would feel more safe with single phase versus 3 phases. with 3 phases you have 2 more wires which could increase possibility of failure.

    • @milithemuffin4534
      @milithemuffin4534 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @blackdaan
      @blackdaan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      380 input or 220 input.. you have 380 and you are running more machines? go for it, you can spread the power over 3 phases. for example: if you let the spindle run a cnc progrom at 2kw. and you want to weld something in the mean while. with a 16amp 220v fuse you have 1.680 kw left or you will blow out the fuse.
      with 380 you would have 3 phases with 3kw left over.

    Dude I just bought one of these bad boys but I'm lost with it straight out of the box.. Does it take a lot to get this correctly set up bcos I'm not so technically gifted my friend.. I will find help online to show me how to set this bad boy up soon but I shouldn't need this for a small spindle motor like a Gennitsu GS - 775 should I?? This is why I say I'm not technically gifted bcos I don't understand all of this stuff right now.
    I'm building my own home DIY CNC Router and I kept hearing that I needed to get one of these but I think I made the mistake of buying a 3 phase VFD instead of a single phase VFD. No wiring came with this thing which threw me for a loop so if anybody on here has any helpful advice for me please drop me a line in the comments. I'd very much appreciate ur help guys.. Hello! Glad to find someone in NZ doing CNC, your videos are extremely helpful! I have two questions and was wondering if you'd be so inclined to help. I also have a HY VFD and 2.2kw water-cooled spindle, and was wondering if you know about the input draw current (of the vfd at the wall at max load)? as there seems to be much debate. Living in a residential NZ household I am limited to 240v 10AMPS at the wall, so I thought I could run the spindle on its own and everything else on another circuit, but I've recently read that at max rpm the VFD itself may be drawing over 16AMPS? which will blow the breaker. I've opted for an 800w which is on the way and I intend to cut 6061 aluminium with it (at very slow cut speed with a two or 3 flue carbide endmill, probably 3-4mm)I have seen your spindle comparison video too, and my second question is, in your opinion can i use an 800w water-cooled spindle to cut 6061 plate as long as I use the appropriate feeds and cutter? It is a small extrusion and plate based machine using linar rails (hiwin clones) and 12mm ballscrews with nema 23 312oz/in motors. In building this machine I have already realized my mistakes as I rushed to buy the parts.
    Apologies for the wall of text! any help or advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!

    • @PiotrFoxWysocki
      @PiotrFoxWysocki  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i haven't measure how much current does the whole machine draws. but i can tell you that i have also 10amp breaker and from the experience i can say that its just fine.
      On the VFD you can monitor how much current does the spindle draw. on a 15mm deep side cut 1.5mm thick cut current was going to 6amps. spindle total power is 2.2KW which under 220v is 10Amps precisely. not to sure how its possible to draw 16Amps.
      recently I'm milling lots of parts whole day long and i haven't tripped beakers. but i did it with 800watt spindle. by stalling it. how? by driving it in to the aluminium and because it wasn't powerful enough it stopped spinning which ended up in drawing way too much current and tripping the breaker.
      I dont think you have to worry too much.
      2.2kw spindle has bigger collets so you can use mills up to 13mm and just because of this its cool. now my prefer mill sizes are 8 and 10mm. it takes more time to setup part than it takes to mill it.
      i feel like i could go for hours on this topic :) but i have to stop somewhere :)
      i hope it was helpful.

    • @3dkiwi920
      @3dkiwi920 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so very much for the insight, I could gladly listen/read all day :) The only reason I said 16A+ is because of the common "forum debates" about such things. I think my confusion stems from where many have stated that because we here in NZ are single phase and the vfd outputs always 3 phase, so there is conversion; but it's actual draw is not 10A constant and that the stated 220v/2.2kw/10A is the rating of the motor at max load and rpm. Also as stated by many, this is likely a 2 pole motor(your vfd still set at 4 this whole time??), so I wonder if that has any effect. But I can't argue if you say the system is still running fine and I have seen it chew through aluminium and you are also on stock NZ power. Anyway I will re-watch this video and experiment tomorrow. Many thanks again, I almost sold my 2.2 before even trying it!

      im still running it as 4 poles. but i wont be recommending setting it like that. i dont have any documentation about my spindle, it seem to be working on 4 so im not changing it. at list until someone can explain it to me in the way that makes sense :)

      I'm currently using the 800W spindle for about a year and half, mainly cutting the aluminium, and so far all good. I will use the 2.2kW spindle on new machine, but mainly because it has ER20 clamps instead of ER11.

    Hi Piort, Again an informative video, thank you, one thing I dont understand about these vfd´s and spindle motors is the output voltage from vfd to spindle motor, is it correct that the spindle motor voltage is 3 phase 220VAC (is that a USA standard) and not what we usualy have in Europe being 3 phase 380/400VAC, none of the Chinese on Ebay can tell me what they mean with 3 phase 220VAC

    • @PiotrFoxWysocki
      @PiotrFoxWysocki  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      from my understanding you can plug 220v to the VFD or 380v. you can use one or the other. vfd outputs frequency (variable frequency drive) to the spindle by 3 wires. and those wires have shifted signal in order. so 3 different phases. and what is the output voltage I don't know. but i'm guessing it will be 220 per wire.
      not sure if i explain anything, or make it even more confusing :)
