    The pins labeled FOR, REV, RST, SPH, SPM, SPL are actually multipurpose(with pin number D1~D6) and are configurable for different features. Whats on the label is actually their default feature.
    Settings for program 44~49 are the pin configrations for the multipurpose pins D1~D6. Each can have 32 configurations (set 0~32), here are few common settings you may need:
    01 Run (combine this with other controls)
    02 Forward
    03 Reverse
    04 Stop
    05 Toggle forward/reverse
    13 Emergency stop
    14 Reset
    Fortunately I can understand the manual so I post this.

    • @yrr0r244

      And also, you can configure diffrent segments of speed. That VFD comes with two speed control modes (low/mid/high or 8 speed) . The 3 speed control are already usable from pin SPH/SPM/SPL (of course you need set the frequencies first)

    Actually, the Parameter #13 is pretty important.
    As You stated, it will revert the parameters to factory values when set to 8.
    I think this should be done before any other parameters are programmed. This way You know the state of the VFD.
    I have programmed a few of these and I have stumbled twice in a situation when the parameters were totally haywire. I think this is because the units are tested in the factory and sometimes the test leaves the unit in some strange setup. Factory reset will cure this.
    Good and informative video.

    Will this unit function with only 220 in and the power leads going out hooked up and none of the other wires hooked up..I just received one that is similar and hooked it up, but nothing happening..also do you have to do any rewiring on the motor..it is a clausing 4914 lathe with a 3-phase motor..the vfd is single to three phase

    hey man, thanks for the Vid! just ordered one of these from ebay to run a 2.2kw spindle for my cnc. Just a FYI 8e1 RTU is Modbus lingo for 8 data bits, one stop bit. and rtu is remote terminal unit. just means that Modbus is set to direct master slave configuration (as opposed to over a network). your PC is master your VFD is slave. I am really surprised it didn't have you set parity. even or odd. but who knows :) anyway thanks for the tips! cant wait to get to playing with mine.

    • @russtuff

      That's a great explanation, thanks! I don't know modbus at all but your description makes sense.

    • @souprmage
      @souprmage 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 'e' in 8e1 means even parity. It's defining the protocol of the bits flowing across the connection. Both ends have to talk using the same protocol or it's like one person talking Japanese and one talking Hindu.

      Hello Anima I'm not sure what you mean. Are you just wiring the VFD to the mains and having an error, or are you referring to when you hook up the motor to the VFD? Which pins do you need help with?

  • @BillyTpower
    @BillyTpower 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You mentioned changing the rpm to reflect the actual spindle rpm. I'm assuming this will display the correct rpm when in use? if does it just automatically display it? mine just displays frequency by default

    • @russtuff
      @russtuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Billy T Yes once set up it should show you the correct RPM. One of the buttons cycles through information like RPM, frequency, etc. My control cabinet is in storage so I can't play with it too see which button does which. I never used the vfd read out either since I can see RPM inside of linuxcnc.

    Russ is the VFD to computer connection via the RS-232/485 serial adapter the only connection you need for LinuxCNC to control the VFD? In other words does the C11 board get used at all then to run the spindle? Or is the C11 board just used to run the X, Y, Z axis?

    • @russtuff
      @russtuff  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the C11 does nothing to control the spindle in my case. It only reads RPM.

      It sounds like you have one of those high-freq 2.2kw spindles. I have one too but never got around to wiring it up. I would suggest clicking the link in the video description and going to my dropbox. There is a folder with files for this VFD and there is a text doc called "Parameters" that will get you going quickly.

  • @twofeetdown
    @twofeetdown 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is enough noise in my shop that I sometimes don't notice that I have not turned the VFD on. Running a program with the spindle not turning is not my idea of a good time.
    I finally figured out how to let Linuxcnc know that it is off. In custom_postgui.hal I added the following line as the first line in the file:
    sets spindle-at-speed false
    and that did the trick. Now if I forget to turn the VFD on the program executes until it finds the first S and M3 commands and waits until I turn the VDF on and the spindle gets up to speed.

    What do you think of the build quality over all of the Huanyang VFD ? Anything beyond what you have said in the video? I use Teco on most of my machines. I am just looking at what might be outside of that choice.

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say that TECO VFDs are nicer looking and probably a bit better built but the Huanyang VFDs are suitable for home shop and small shop use. They are cheap enough to buy two and have one as a spare.

    • @russtuff
      @russtuff  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +IronHead Machine +Liberty4Ever I don't think you're going to get better quality vs a Teco, but these things are cheap. I've been reading more reviews online and it seems a lot of people have torched this VFD, but mine has been really solid so far. Maybe I'm not pushing it hard enough.

    • @russtuff

      IronHead Machine That's not a bad idea! Also, there is a way you can control the speed with an external pot wired up, so that would be perfect.

  • @DrTimmay
    @DrTimmay 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm kind of surprised that you can't do the VFD programming manually. I apparently can't find the right manuals, but do you know if the VFD has an SPI, UART or I2C port on it? If so, you could probably program it automatically that way using a microcontroller that simply sends the commands when it detects the DPDT switch going from the lathe to the mill

    • @russtuff
      @russtuff  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't look like it. This one has UPF, DRV, DCM, SPL, SPM, SPH, RST, REV, FOR, FOR, FA, FC, FB, DRV, =10, VI, AI, ACM, AM, RS-, RS+. The RS ports are the ones I have hooked up to the serial port. Even if it did have the ports you mention, I wouldn't know the first thing about programming pulses to change the parameters. If you're interested, the correct manual is here: www.exoror.com/datasheet/VFD.pdf

    • @DrTimmay
      @DrTimmay 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      russtuff Ah, slick, thanks. I'll leaf through it. I did some more hunting over the weekend and found this site [1], which calls out RS as the RS485 (serial) port. Sound like you CAN program it via serial, so you might be able to get your controller (LinuxCNC or Mach or whatever) to automagically set the program parameters correctly. I'll keep pokin' around...

    If running on a VFD why stop and change belt ratio? Just set program 5 on your VFD to a max frequency "above" the base speed of 60hz to over speed the motor. something like 75hz = 2250rpm for a 4 pole. Just as the VFD can run the motor below base speed (60hz=1800rpm) it can run it over that also.

    • @gregsb3454
      @gregsb3454 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks - you just solved my problem of not being able to change the speed via the variable speed switch on the VFD above 1800rpm

    • @chriss6921
      @chriss6921 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg SB
      Just remember that the VFD runs the motor in constant power mode above base speed (in this case that would be 1hp). So the torque the motor can provide will drop off HP*5252/RPM=torque.

    • @russtuff
      @russtuff  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      For my lathe, I need to run some tests and see what the motor is willing to take. It isn't rated above 60hz. Now my new inverter duty mill motor is rated to run at 120hz and 180hz is the "max safe". That should be fun.

    • @chriss6921
      @chriss6921 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Leeson 192051 is listed as "inverter rated" 10 to 1 speed reduction and 150% speed increase, so you should be able to run the motor from 6hz to 90hz without issues. Of course the "inverter rated" is a marketing term and as you mentioned if it was an inverter duty motor (ie designed electrically to run on an inverter) it would be marked on the name plate. Since the motor on a VFD will produce constant torque below base speed and constant HP above it should be possible to run just one belt ratio for the majority of your lathe programs and not have to stop to change belts or have 2 programs. Looking forward to seeing the testing videos.

    • @russtuff
      @russtuff  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris S The Leeson is 10:1? I can't find that info anywhere, but that's good to know. When controlling the VFD via modbus there are 8 "speeds" the VFD allows, in 7.5hz increments.I've run the lathe at all of those speeds, but you're right the torque falls off pretty quickly. When I need low RPM and more torque that is when I go to another belt, but that's proven to be somewhat rare at this point.

      @@russtuff Sorry to be so late responding. Largely due to your videos and files I have gained control over my spindle from Linuxcnc. Thanks! :)
      I do have one small issue left that you may be able to help me with. If I do not power up the VFD then when Linuxcnc starts it thinks the spindle is up-to-speed and executing a program will not stop at the first S code like it should. If I turn the VFD on and then turn it off the green indicator on the screen turns red and exechting code will stop at the first S code and wait as it should. Then, if I turn the VFD back on code will continue to execute after the spindle is up-to-speed.
      Do you know how I can get Linuxcnc to realize that the spindle is not running if I never turn the VFD on? Thanks for considering this. Jim

      P08 is Hide Password. When i push Stop/Reset (button 8) on the controller it resets then about 2 seconds it shows error 3 again
      I discovered that I had the motor wire for 460 volt instead of 230 volt. I corrected that and have the same problem. I disconnected the motor from the vfd and still have the same problem. Can't get it to reset.

      Ah, set program 013 to value 8 for factory reset. I knew there was an 8 in there somewhere. Does factory reset make a difference?

    From what I understand, if wants to use a brake resistor, they need to use the Huanyang GT model as it has different circuitry and can be used with a brake. th-cam.com/video/Ibxn6xPRl3I/w-d-xo.html

    DO NOT FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL UNLESS YOU HAVE THE SAME VFD. MY SPINDKE STARTED SMOKING AFTER SETTING IT TO 60HZ LIKE THE VIDEO

    • @hb9dod
      @hb9dod 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      PD003 004 005 should be the spindle frequency so 400 hz NOT 60

      @@hb9dod This is my understanding as well (likely dependent on which VFD you have) but mine specifically says to set those parameters to match the HZ on the SPINDLE (not the input frequency from your power source to the VFD).

    PD144 Rated Motor Revolution you kinda went bonkers on drives and did not say what to put for say 24,000 rpm motor? also my motor is a 400 Hz motor where is that programmed in? My land power is 115V 60Hz. thanks

      Check your manual to be sure but PD072 is where I set that for mine. Also from HY on Amazon for my setup they said that PD144 is NOT the motor RPM (for mine it is set to 3000 when my spindle is rated for 24000 rpm). "PD144 is the tracking parameter to ensure the accurate RPM is displayed on the panel of the VFD"

    Hi Russ great video, the drive is good i have the 5hp version, i wanted to ask it you have noticed any issues with dynamic breaking or have tried it yet - it will stop the spindle a lot faster than with out.. helps more on larger mill/ lathe spindles than the smaller ones. on my lathe i have a 5hp motor and takes a while to slow down unless you have the breaking setup and add the breaking resistor. the problem with mine is that it was missing the Dynamic breaking electronic parts on the main power board. i was able to find them from mouser and had to order them and install.. the VFD is now able to stop the spindle in less that 3seconds from 2800 rpm. there is a video on this issue on youtube here --> link to (Huanyang VFD with dynamic braking) th-cam.com/video/cOMjNhSRAe0/w-d-xo.html and he also has some links to the Mach3 support forum that addresses this issue. other wise it has been a good unit so far. Keep up the great videos
    Mitch

      I haven't tried the dynamic braking or bought a braking resistor yet. I plan to, but I haven't researched it at all and am not sure what resistor to get. Do you have a link to the one you bought on Mouser?

      hi, the resistor i am using is a 100 ohm 250 watt i just happened to have it around the shop. the parts i got from mouser are the ones missing from the vfd. mine was missing the IGBT, a 6pin optocoupler P701 and a diode. the parts have a place to be installed on the pc board but were not installed by the factory. the IGBT was the same as the others that are installed and the same for the opto. - you will need to check the circuit board to verify if it is missing any parts and then go from there. check out the link i posted and it has a link to mach3support form that had the same issue and the fix..

    Hi, I'm based in Bulgaria and really need some help with the 7.5kw hy vfd. Would you be able to do a quick video chat with me and just talk me through some of the parameters that I aught to be setting.
    I'm really capable of most tasks but I've just bought a beautiful old spindle moulder from Germany and I really don't want to fry the motor. I. Exchange I'll send you a gift from my workshop in south east Bulgaria 😊, regards Darrell Nicol
