Compare this to the Red Bull Flugtag events. These guys need to compete in a Flugtag and take the absolute record!

Glider records vary entirely depending upon the altitude they are released and the weather. Therefore you can't really directly compare one released from a high altitude, to one released just a few metres off the ground like this. For example a Japanese man has glided 1084km in distance in Japan, his name is Kenshi Tagami.
Japan did human powered flight of 60km at a birdman rally event, this is where a man uses pedals to generate the rotation for the propeller, it was launched from this same ramp in this video.
Japan apparently has more turbulent air than in some other areas of the world, so it makes trying to break gliding or even man powered records more difficult, for example Kenshi Tagami only reached 1084km because he knew of a very specific area in Japan, where for a few days in the year it has weather suitable for a long distance glide.
MIT of the USA hold the man powered record of 115km, and they performed this deliberately in the Mediterranean near Greece, which gives very good stable conditions.
Who knows how far the birdman guys who reached 60km in Japan, by flying in a large triangle, would have reached if they were to take it to another area like the Mediterranean and try there (It's obvious they would get a bigger number, I am not saying that they would 100% beat the MIT 115km, but they would certainly beat their own 60km).

@@ziongite The MIT team did not choose that route for its good weather. In fact, the could not fly for weeks because of it! They just wanted to recreate the mythical flight of Daedalus. If they really wanted to set an absolute distance record they would have done it at the mohave desert or something.
