Stan and Kenny Barron just align SO well! Like Bird & Diz...Miles & Trane. Superb! We're so very lucky to have quality video of such a great live performance!
This is one of the best live recordings of Kenny Barron's composition “Voyage” with Stan Getz, Victor Louis and Rufus Reid, recorded live in Café Montmartre 1987 in Copenhagen. Many Frankfurt jazz-musicians were still on the “free jazz trip” at this time and ignored standardts as conventional and commercial jazz. The Frankfurt philosopher and musicologist “Theodor Adorno” had contributed a lot to this. Unfortunately, he didn't really understand jazz. Yes, he had described it as a commercial genre in which the musicians use "lazy tricks". Unfortunately, Adorno did not understand that jazz musicians improvise and play with soul, reflecting current events and the musical quality of a swinging beat !. Music is based on only 3 elements: 1st. melody (it stands for love), 2nd rhythm (it stands for liveliness and sex) and 3rd sound (it stands for the current atmosphere in space and time) , All 3 components are optimally realized in this live recording by the Stan Getz Quartet. They swing devilishly and move totally freely in the form of this number. The Greek philosopher Plato said 3000 years ago: "Art is freedom in form".
I already heard that Stan Getz had studied The solo of Kenny Baron(also composer of course) to get the grip but only at the ending start to realy nail it I do agree you totallyu!
Kenny Barron's “Voyage” number has a shape (AABA). The Greek philosopher Plato said 3000 years ago: "Art is freedom in form". If you listen to this quartet, you will find that all musicians use this form totally freely! This is Freejazz in Copenhagen in 1987.
Thanks for posting this! Do you have the rest of this concert? I can't get it here in America unless I have a PAL format DVD player and about $210 US for the video.

Merci
So many times I heard the CD... Everything is marvelous here. I can't say what is better. Victor Lewis is my man!
Same here Victor is fantastic
They're all top guys.....a masterpiece....and Kenny Barrons tune is just wonderful...
Here 4 rhythmic players play together - they all play to the point, none too late and none too early, which breathes immense vitality into the piece.
Stan Getz only one forever
Stunning performance by all. Stan Getz, Kenny Barron, Victor Lewis and Rufus Reid. Icons to the last man. Wow.
This is certainly the best live version of "Voyage" with Kenny Barron and Stan Getz. Stan, Kenny, Victor Lewis and Rufus Reid swing like hell.
I have this on vinyl and cd. The audio is the exact same as this video. Happy to see this on screen. Thank you so much for posting this.

Effortless playing .... hiding decades of practice.
