I had concert tickets to see Stan Getz, and then he passed away. Somehow I missed Chet Baker until Laufey started talking about him. What an amazing artist. Yes TH-cam is a gift.

One night in the early 80s I was wandering around on foot through Chicago’s entertainment district. I did not know the city but was aware of its musical legacy. My esrs directed me to a small downstairs club, a cocktail bar seating maybe 40. The ideal after-hours club. As if on cue, out came onto the tiny stage Stan Getz and his trio. Over the following hour I was transported by moody music appropriate for that time of night. This kind of unplanned synchronicity is what makes being in a big city worthwhile.

Years ago, there was an article in the NY Times about never released video footage of Miles Davis in the studio during the recording of Kind Of Blue. The video was available on this new website called TH-cam. I thought it was the most amazing thing ever. TH-cam has made it possible to travel through time. Stan and Chet are no longer with us, but TH-cam just took me to Stockholm in 1983 to see them live. Art never dies or gets old... It's just waiting to be rediscovered. Thanks for posting.

Chet was inspired, trained, enriched by jazz played by Black people, like Miles. Jazz music was invented by Black people. It takes a significant ear for a white person to interpret and play jazz. As many caucasians have. The ear.

Stan and Chet at their finest. It' s almost a miracle how Chet was able to play like with visibly so much broken. But his melody lines seem to stay so pure.

@@alvaro5805 It wasn't the drugs it was having his teeth punched out and having to get dentures. He had to relearn how to play the horn. Cigarettes don't help the voice either.

@@alvaro5805his trumpet sound and lyrical phrasing evolved during all his carrer, he does not sound the same in 53 than in the 60ies or even more different in the 80ies After learning to play with a dentier, what I can agree with is that he has always been a story teller, even when you can tell he is not at the top of himself, he is ALWAYS Putting something from himself in to it, it is very deep and and impressive and this is why jazz is for in my opinion. His Always dedicated and expressive approach of music are the reason I play this music.

I heard Stan Getz many, many years ago in Sausalito, superb! I've only been a fan of Chet's in recent times, when I learned to recognize what a terrific talent he was. Sorry I never got to hear him in person, his music is truly one of a kind. It portrays the very soul of the man when he performs, subdued and sensual. Two very different, gifted artists who made good music together..

M.J. Leger I had the huge pleasure of spending time with Chet when he was down on his luck and would do a once a year stint in Toronto in the 80's at a duo club called bourbon street/basin street on Queen Street at University Ave. It was magical. He was very much dependent on hard drugs but once he had his fix he would play until they turned off the lights. I saw him play drums for one set!

But I later learned to love Chet's music as well, and still do. Both are gone now, as are many of the greatest talents of that era. I think the 1960's to the mid- to late 80's gave us some of the greatest talents in music ever seen or heard. Thank goodness they left us their recordings so we can hear them forever.

It is said that they hated each other, but this performance shows that they had profound musical respect for each other, and that Stan really dug Chet's incredible solo on "Dear Old Stockholm".

You took the words right out of my mouth. Stan's face at 3:48 - it's as he's thinking that after all the bullshit, these are the moments that make it all worth it.

It is a sticky hot Augustday in Munich ... this wonderful composition so peacefully streaming out of Chet Bakers trumpet .. sails me out to Fjäderholmarna . where I'm currently sitting on a rock, feet in water, a nice glass of beer in hand 😊 ❤

First of all a great performance from both, a great pleasure. I also once again appreciate the video resolution quality of the European standards in those years, much better than North-American.

I loved Chet's gesture to the audience as he rose from his stool. Like he almost did not believe himself how beautiful that solo was.

Imagine what could have been if these guys could have gotten their lives together. They never got along and recorded together very little. Their natural sounds and styles complimented each other so perfectly ... who knows. I got know Stan a little when was teaching at Stanford near the end of his life and career. It all came easy for him. He really was a genius.
Getz Meets Mulligan in HI Fi. Best Getz album.
Any of Mulligan Baker quartet albums for Baker.
Never got to hear the three together. That would have to have been cool.
