I had the pleasure hearing and meeting my guitar idols Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd after a show in Georgetown. 25 years later, they still are some of my favorite guitarists. Awesome, thanks for posting !
2 in the morning told myself id only watch a song or two. ended up watch it all. beautiful work by these giants. barney is unreal. thanks for sharing. if only people could still dig these jams.
I LOVE Barney Kessel... he is a must listen for all serious students of jazz guitar... he is always inspirational.. I was blessed to heave met him in the '90's when he came to Melbourne and performed at Dr Jazz in Carlton .. and extra special for me that my young son John met him too... great memories, !!!!
Excellent film. Barnet Kessel was a true master of his instrument, as was the superb Stan Levey on drums, who played so tight and precise, never trying to upstage anyone.

Barney used a Gibson GA5 amplifier on a lot of his early recordings. Don't recognize what he's using here, though. For a kinescope recording with optical soundtrack, this is surprisingly good.
Barney was the chord-melody guitarist par excellence. No one could touch him particularly in the Swing era. Check out his series of albums : THE POLL WINNERS with Ray Brown on Bass and Shelly Manne on drums.
Fabulous take on masters of their craft, when so many appreciated and admired what they did. Barney, as always, is a thrill to behold. Thanks so much for posting
Think again, you live in a time that allow you hear any recorded song in the history, and watch every frame recorded of these wonderful musicians of the last century. I'm not saying that music nowadays isn't shit, cause it is, but you must consider that Barney Kessel played this 55 years ago for a few lucky guys, and this was pratically forgotten for all this years, and now it is here, free for the all world watch. Think this way, and maybe you realize that this is the best era for who love music.
OMG! Seems yesterday. In 1930's i lived in Brooklin. At that time, me and my friends, we usually spend the nights at the famous Dinky Donky Skbadaboob Da Boob Dabidubidi Dubidi Da Da Da Dinah's palace. Better know as DDSDBDDDDD, or for the real intimate customers, only Dinki. A hidden cubbyhole on the 56Th avenue. Famous artists usually performed there, people like Armostrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Korn, Iron Maiden, Etta James, Eminem, The Beatles, N.W.A., Bad Bunny, Travis Scott and many others. That's used to be the best place where we secretly drank whiskey. You know what i mean? Prohibition and stuff. Forget about it, we usually sayin' as Italians Immigrants. What a wonderful time of my life!
I loved this,Barney Kessel he his some guitarist!Take a listen to his playing of Tenderly,if you can its the best. I have never heard anybody get the same feel for that tune.
Barney was the best of the best came to Sydney on two or three occasions, the first was with Charlie Bird and Herb Ellis, the second at Kiama south coast of NSW as it was poring cats and dogs in Kiama he kicked off with That Rainy Day, very humorous, at breakfast the next morning he autographed one of my records, a true gentleman.
Where are tv programs like this? I cut the cable 5 or so years ago because I got tired of Springer-esque tattle tales of people eating squirming bugs to win a trip to Disneyland... I might hook up again if there were programs like this still.
Everybody associated with the show, including the "jazz consultant" gets credit, except the bassist Buddy Woodson and drummer Stan Levy. C'mon boys, you can do better than that.
It was my great pleasure to be friendly with Barney.
We spent many great times together in England.
RIP Barney.
You were a fantastic man.

Always felt Barney was a giant on the guitar, but this video has given me even more appreciation for the man!
Saw him at his concert in Gothenburg in Sweden in the early 70-ties... It was a very great concert!
Happy Birthday Mr. Kessel and THANK YOU for giving us such great music....music that inspires.

Barney kessel great different the all the other pleyaers
Barney est époustouflant. Merci pour ce précieux document!
Barney flying, with a great band too.
This is all kinds of awesome! Thanks for the upload!
His sound is so clear and expressive, wish jazz guitarists today would go for that sound instead of that dull doot-doot everyone seems to strive for.
"Dull Doot-Doot"......???
We're trying
You mean the rolled off tone? I don't dig that either. Some players are embracing brighter tone lately. Frisell and Lage for example.
I miss the lack of effects. Today's jazz guitarists give me chorus pedal fatigue.
Amen bro!!!
Its one to listen and watch again and again and a----
That´s so GREAT!

great chord work but he can't handle the tempo with his single line work. Its messy and doesn't sound coherent. Love Fly Me To The Moon though.
