  • Today Mike is in the bay to test out some of the buzziest drivers of the season. There is no denying this is the year of "10K' and while all of these drivers aren't labeled as 10K, they all are high MOI offerings that compete with each other for forgiveness. Come see which Mikey prefers after trying the Qi10 MAX, ST MAX, G430 MAX 10K and the Black Ops 0311!

    So question…my handicap is around 18 right now (will come down once I actually play more and get back into my rhythm). That being said, I’ve been watching you and some others on drivers and seems like there was a trend of if you had faster swing speed you went into a LS head, but seeing more tour guys going away from LS models (they can control it way better obviously), but I am thinking my fitter saw swing speed and gravitated to LS heads although my handicap is higher. Interested to hear your take on this. Just concerned about getting onto course and struggling to keep it in play (since had some wayward shots with driver was fitted for).

    I love your content. I just tested both TM and Ping in 9* heads. 100mph swing speed and was seeing good ball speeds on both. I used the manufacturers shaft options and didn't notice Ping feeling heavier. Is that because Ping's shaft options are counterbalanced ?

    • @BlueDragonKorea
      @BlueDragonKorea 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Their stock shafts/manufacturer shafts are often counterbalanced, which would explain why you felt that the Ping wasn't heavier. (Mikey played the same shaft in all 4 drivers, which is why he felt the Ping head weight more.)

    • @atxrich
      @atxrich 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep the added weight in handle does make for a lighter feeling club. The Alta shafts are counterbalanced. There was a time they offered the Tensei Orange which was another counter balanced shaft. Ping driver heads are heavier than most if I’m not mistaken so a CB shaft can help offset that extra head weight.
      I game the TSR3 with HZDRUS Red CB. It’s counterbalanced and felt great in my testing though noticeably lighter feeling compared to drivers I’d played in the past so there was a negligible adjustment period.

Later I tried the Ping Tour Black 65S and found it to be very stable, similar to the Tensei Black. Ping is at the top of my list right now. Still undecided on a Chrome 65S or 75S shaft for the G430 Max 3W as well.

    A bit of a false headline bordering on bait and switch🙂. This was hardly a test designed to identify the 10K King as much as it was a mini fitting to see what works best for Mikey, who has some pretty distinctive features of his golf swing that may well not translate all that much to others. I say that just to be frank and not as a form of criticism. I have tested three of these (not the Mizuno) and in appropriately fitted shafts, etc. for my swing : different shafts in each given the difference in head weights and other factors. By far the best for me was the Ping with a Ventus Red shaft that provided me consistent (relatively lower spin) and higher launch in a 10.5 head.
    I play regular shaft at a few weeks short of my 77th birthday, but I can still play and am a golf coach.
    One thing that has become clear to me with age and the loss of strength if not flexibility (as much) is that the range of head/shaft matches that work for me -- both in irons and woods -- has narrowed considerably. At one time I could play nearly any combination within reason; and now the differences are magnified and the drop off can be alarming. I find it most frustrating when it comes to irons. I don't have the speed to keep most player's distance irons in the air enough to benefit from the technology designed to increase ball speed ( it's a disaster with Callaway PD irons for me). This problem is theoretically solved by GI clubs, not because they are higher spinning, but because the CG is so low that descent angle compensates for landing issues. Problem is that most of these look like kitchen utensils, have too much offest and are nearly useless when trying to work the ball. I'd love to go through a fitting with you guys just because I know I represent a small subset of players, but it is a serious group of golfers nonetheless: low handicap/former scratch or better golfers who've played well for 30-50 years most of which was accomplished with players clubs -- in my case it started with Tourney CF4000 irons then Mizunos eventually and then just trying to figure it out: how to make up a bit for lost distance and speed, needing to work the ball to score, needing to get height because we still play serious golf courses that require irons over bunkers protecting greens, etc. And not wanting to move up to the Senior tees because the courses we play don't offer the strategic challenge at those distances. The one I have played most of my adult life (The Yale Golf Course) was designed to be played from what is now the championship tees. The other tees were an afterthought. This is more common than one would think. Right now the best compromise I have found is the Titleist T150s, but I think there are few irons that fit the bill and I am thinking more than ever that it's more an issue of completely restructuring the bag than anything else. I think for golfers like me, the pressure on designers is not at the top or the bottom of the bag, but in the middle, finding clubs that substitute for 4,5, and even 6 irons that are workable, launch high, with some stopping power, and then combining these with distance clubs at the top of the bag and scoring clubs at the bottom where you don't feel embarrassed by a 7i that goes 135 yds or a bit less that you used to be able to hit 170 when it was 36* and so on. If I could put a non compromise set of clubs together that fit my eye and style of golf, i'd probably be happy playing a player's CB or blade even from 7i up, and like everyone else we are looking for the same things more or less with driver and 3wd (I actually use a 5 wd myself instead) but between that and the 7i is where all the issues really lay. And I. know I am not alone in this. Not a segment of the golfing world that manufacturers are likely to attend too much to, but many of us are among those who were athletes who took up golf early and helped make it a sport that athletes and not just wealthy folks played 🙂. I'd like to see some episodes putting a bag together for someone whose game is much like mine these days. A former scratch or better golfer who now plays off around 5 from the member tees (and for fun and pain plays from the back tees on occasion) who used to hit an 8 iron into the green but from 150-160, but now would have to use a 5 or 6 iron but could never get it over the bunker or near the pin, and picks up a hybrid instead that has too large standard deviation and is draw biased, and not workable. Not complaining. Just identifying a kind of market gap that is particularly worrisome for a whole category of golfers.
