  • In all fairness, I didn't make this video for you. I made this video for me.
Since the beginning of the year, I thought I could come back to the conventional putter after using the side saddle for nearly a year straight. But I was wrong. And I needed to remind myself why before I quit the game completely. AGAIN.
Side saddle putting isn't for everyone, and I get that. But it is for me. And here's why.

I changed to side-saddle two years ago for all sorts of reasons and I've never looked back. Yes, it looks unorthodox and you get loads of strange/sideways glances when playing with new partners ... but when you start dropping them, they all want to have a go :-) My putting stats have improved beyond belief and I have totally lost my fear of the moss.
The big reason more people don't do it, is a you say, because they don't want to 'look weird'. Everything about side-saddle is better than the conventional style: binnocular vision; one moving joint; master eye over line. Remember when Fosbury came along to the 1968 Mexico Olympics and wiped the floor with everyone in the high jump doing the 'Fosbury Flop'. Overnight, the scissor / straddle styles went extinct.
I had L.A.B make me an 80 deg. broomstick MEZ II and I use it to great effect. What I love is how easy it is to get the ball rolling perfectly 'end-over-end' down the tgt. line - it's mesmorizing if you use one of those Srixon 'divide' style balls!
Yes, I guess I would love to look like Ben Crenshaw, holing them with an 8802/nappy style putter conventionally ... but the simple truth is, side-saddle get's the ball in the hole better with fewer strokes - is that not the goal? So who cares how you look.
Regarding the rules, I carry a screenshot on my phone from the USGA rules re. side saddle (for all the 'is that legal' crowd):
    a. 14-1b Not allowed to achor the forearm of the top arm against the body - as long as it's free floating, you're good.
    b. 16-1e 'The player shall not make a stroke on the putting green from a stance astride, or with either foot touching, the line of the putt or an extension of that line behind the ball'. So as long as you are to the side of the line (not croquet style), you're good!
    c. Putter angle of the shaft must diverge at least 10 degrees from the vertical (90 degrees) so that you effectively cannot use a croquet mallet 90 degrees. So 80 degrees lie angle is conforming.
Bryson DC was stopped from doing side-saddle by the PGA because his putter was non-conforming.

Hi Doc, I’m a little late to the conversation . The USGA AND R&A set the rules that we all abide by.I’ve yet to hear the PGA elaborate on why they shut down Bryson’s sidesaddle technique. I’m guessing they didn’t think it was a good ‘look’ for golf. To which I respond ‘pfft’. Sidesaddle putting is effective, legal and fun. Knock em straight..

Keep up the good work man. I have a non-conventional start to my swing that makes others do a double take, but I hit 16/18 greens in reg yesterday. Experimenting with side saddle because 1. it's legal, 2. if it works i could care less how it looks, 3. screw what anyone else thinks.

Bro do whatever it takes to get the ball in the whole as soon as you can no matter the technique! I have single length irons, Cobra Forged Tec. I’ve met one other person who plays single length. It’s helped my game tremendously!! Keep swinging Dr. Duckhook!

I agree! Been thinking of trying same length irons. I like that concept.

I went to a broomstick 47 inch putter and use it face on like you. I have lower back problems and going to a 47 inch broomstick allows me to stand up straight. With a normal putter I could only practice putting for maybe 10 or 15 minutes due to back pain. I can putt all day with the broomstick with zero pain. I like face on putting as you can use binocular vision to see your line. When my buddy and I get paired with golfers we don't know they look at me strangely until the middle of the round and they see me sinking putts or leaving lag putts a foot or less from the hole. With my stroke with my right hand and arm I just make like I am rolling the ball to the hole by a light toss. Very ez to do. As long as you are not straddling the line it is a legal way to putt.

I hear ya! Ugh! I remember when Bryson tried to do it on the PGA Tour and they shut him down after a few rounds. lol OH WAIT! You're at Dauphin Highlands! Nice! One of my fav courses.

Highlands is great! They shut Bryson down cause his club was nonconforming, not the stroke.

its not conventical because its not a legal putter i like to stay within the rules of the game but others dont. your only cheating yourself at the end of the day its like goin to the gym and doin half reps it may boost your ego but you wont reap any benefits doing things the incorrect way.
