Yeah and I think she also somewhat saw herself in Rue as well because they were both the eldest daughters taking care of their younger siblings. She deserved so much more and just like you I always cry when I see/read about Rue
haven't seen the movie yet, but in the book at least he didn't strike me so much as an underdog, as much as someone who felt entitled to glory and power despite someone else's attempts to contain him because that person realized he was actually dangerous and would continue Panem's dictatorial cycle.
One of the things that I appreciated about the series more as I've gotten older, was how our protagonist Katniss, wasn't such a chosen one savior character who's character choices is the sole reason the dismantling of the dystopian world and that she's just another cog in the machine (a very important one indeed) but a machine that would've start regardless just because of the very nature of people of the contradictions the people in power put in place to hold on to their power, there was a lot going on in the background decades before the events of the story by various people with various factions with their own (and a lot of the time selfish) reasons for fighting the fight. And showed just how much suffering and dehumanizing , the cycle of fear and violence can be. without falling into the centralists "every side bad" pitfall that a ton of dystonia YAs and political dramas typically fall into. Its a very scary reflection of our society and the real world suffering that we see (or unwilfully to see) around us. Its especially more true after all the events we're seeing now and the release of BoSAS and how people took all the wrong message from it.
Yes absolutely. The way I see the series is that anyone with enough courage from the districts could’ve been Katniss. She has never wanted that position to begin with. It truly is scary how fitting Panem is to the current state of the world. Not saying it’s the same but there are definitely a lot of call backs and it’s very unfortunate. As you said, The Ballad also does an amazing job at showing just how much fear can control (young) minds and push them away from compassion as is the case with Snow
I’ve always hated that the movies made her the first volunteer. In the books people from Twelve have volunteered before, so even that didn’t make her special. She was just a run of the mill tribute who just so happened to be overwhelmingly compassionate, to the point that it inspired a nation.
@@OpossumOnTheMoon While you're right that District 12 has had volunteers, Katniss says in the book that it has been "decades" since anyone has volunteered. And this also means that for decades, kids were being reaped while their siblings likely stood by and wouldn't dare to take their place. That's not necessarily blameworthy considering their circumstances, but it does add some level of commendable character to Katniss.
@ I agree, but I think there’s a difference between being the first person to do something in decades and being the first to do something EVER. While the action is rightfully commendable in both circumstances Katsniss being the first ever volunteer just ruins that aspect of the story for me. She’s a average person but an above average sister. She’s the common man who happens to do the right action at the right time. I think it kinda waters her down a bit in ways I can’t fully articulate tbh
@@OpossumOnTheMoon I understand your POV. I still think it speaks volumes about who she is, not in a way that makes her extraordinary or superhuman in her affections. It is likely that when the Games first began, the population in the lower districts held onto some kind of hope that a volunteer might have a better chance at beating the odds than, say, an unlucky 12 year old. That hope likely dissipated with time which is why volunteering seems a waste of life by year 74, even for the caring older siblings out there. It's that bleakness that has drawn on for so long which acts as the backdrop of Katniss' actions, which make those around her perceive her as unique.
As we enter the next four years, this has never felt more real. Thank you for releasing this when you did💙 it serves a short rest bite from the reality so many now face…. And how this may actually turn into a reality

3:54 not time stamped perfectly but I 100 percent agree about the Hunger games ability to immerse you into the story and the dynamics without TELLING you the dynamic. You didnt have to read the books to understand whats going on and you dont need a narrator. You get immersed into it, and like you said they brought it to life with parallels to our own society. I also loved the divergence series and i liked the first maze runner. But neither is a good as The Hunger Games.
I said it in the first upload and I'll say it again here. I've said the exact words Katniss said about never having children. The genius of this series is it's fantastical enough to grip us as a media, but close enough to home to have us addicted.
I know some people say that the Capital was too evil and that the Hunger Games would never really happen but they forget about the Coliseum in Rome. It was literally the Hunger Games but much, much worse.
I remember when the movie came out and people were upset that Rue was played by Amandla Stenberg since they expected her to be white. I remember being the same age as Rue and realizing the not so subtle implication that the general public felt like Rue being black made her death “not as sad”. Suzanne really hit on so many issues that plague our society and even when showing the horrors of dehumanizing others people still managed to show exactly what aspects of Panem we accept in our society.
This! I saw a creator on here talking about it in an amazing video (the day the internet discovered that Rue was Black I think it was) and I was honestly so sad and confused seeing that. Realizing that your skin colour makes others see you as less worthy of sympathy was so hurtful. I am honestly just super grateful Collins portrayed Rue with so much humanity in her book
I was on the black side of the Internet but i remember people also being mad that she was light skinned i always envisioned her darker too in the story
I remember this video! Sucks that TH-cam didnt let you keep it on your original channel. I re-watched it and am leaving a comment to help it in the algorithm!
One subtle theme in Hunger Games was the power of atrocity. The Hunger Games served to unite the Capitol district and get the citizens of the Capitol invested. This also served to get the citizens of District 1 and 2 and the other career districts invested in Panem unity. Most of the investment in atrocities was through sponsorship of one of the tributes, a vicarious degree of participation is atrocities. There is never enough power to force people to give their all--when people do only what they're forced to do, empires fall. "Doing nothing" is the nuclear option of a labor strike. "Doing nothing" undermined East Germany to the point of collapse. Participation in atrocities got Capitol District citizens to willingly and actively support the rulers of Panem. "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" drove this home to me--vicarious participation in the atrocities of war has a long and successful history. In "1984" the Two Minutes Hate was one of many vicarious participation atrocities that Big Brother used to control Oceania. In the Hunger Games, the fact that other districts were killing off YOUR district's children also served to make enemies of those districts, and it felt good when the other districts' tributes fell. Atrocity--just the medicine ordered by the doctor.
I love the way the hunger games shows the cruelty in eveyone and how easy it is to other and dehumanize eachother, but at the same time how the human race has rebellion embedded in its soul, compliance and rebellion. How important and dangerous human relationships can be. Class issues, police brutality, how children are used by governments etc

I watched the first Divergent film ages ago and wasn't all that impressed, and haven't read any of those books. Hunger Games and Maze Runner seem like the strongest dystopian YA fiction currently on the market (so to speak). Good video.
Thank you so much for watch! I do agree with this. I did enjoy Divergent as merely an entertaining movie but it definitely does not compete with this franchise in my opinion. I think it might have to do with the fact that Divergent was also written on a much shorter time frame than THG (over a winter break if I am not mistaken) so that might've affected things for sure.
As many times as I've read/watched this series, something has just now occured to me while watching this video. The Careers being allowed to train and their districts being afforded treatment the other districts don't recieve is the Capitol's way of ensuring their loyalty as victors. We learn about their special treatment in the first book, but see it come to fruition in Catching Fire. The rebel victors knew they wouldn't bite the hand that feeds them. It can be argued(albeit without textual evidence) that Katniss posed a threat to their existence in more ways than one and they were aware of that, which is why they went for her so hard the moment the gong sounded.
Career tributes are like today's white collars. They are most likely to be winner and become rich among other working class but it is still one in a million and through very hard and brutal way. Also you have to be very lucky to survive. And most of the time they volunteer to participate (like blue collar workers resist more and go on strikes, unionizes etc. but white collar workers can work overtime voluntarily and unpaid in the hope of American dream.) and careers specially trained for the games. (like white collars' college degrees). Also They are more hostile to other working classes and more loyal to the system/capitol because they think they will be rewarded more if they work more. Indeed, they live relatively better than other working classes.
I'm ngl to you, I wrote this towards the beginning/middle of summer bc I simply could not get over this franchise. I hope you get around to writing about it too:)) And thank you so much, I'm glad you think so!
I watched this video on your main channel a while back, here I am watching again in support and because it’s just genuinely that good! Plus a comment and a like for traction ❤
5:00 It reminds you of all these things, but not North Korea? North Korea is divided up into districts, with even simple travel between them being completely restricted. They’re extremely oppressed to the point of it being required for every house to hold a picture of the great leaders. The Capitol and a few other richer districts can provide decent living standards (not including human rights), but they’re the 1%, where everybody else is on the verge of starving.
I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to NK but this is super interesting and drove me into a bit of a rabbit hole since reading your comment! Very very interesting comparison!

I've been analyzing and turning over THG for years and I just fully connected that Rue is meant for the viewers to realize what Katniss not volunteering would have meant just as much as she's a symbol of missing Prim/what she's fighting for in Katniss's eyes.

There's one thing I don't hear many people talk about. It's the trauma bond and potential codependency between katniss and peeta. I never really liked peeta as much as other people did. He saved katniss, but his actions also kind of forced her to get closer to him. I would love to believe fondness grew organically for her, but I can't ignore the fact that their relationship is rooted in pain and trauma mixed with isolation. They never had the time that they deserved. By the end, peeta became almost all she had left. Who else will understand her arena and war experiences but him? No one. Gale became too dangerous, and his actions caused the loss of her sister. Katniss losses and her ability to survive are relateable to me as a veteran surrounded by danger and the desire to have a sense of normal or something to bond with. A lot of the friendships and relationships I saw were rushed and lacked proper foundation because of the constant looming danger. We often dated each other because we could relate to the shared experiences. That environment can be isolating, too. I don't know. I just wanted more for her in the end. That's also shows how realistic this series is. You feel like the story is real, and katniss could be someone you know. Sorry for the rant. It will forever be one of my favorite book series. I loved the films too.
Is it better if she gets with a guy who likes the same music? I think in a world like that it makes sense for her to end up with him because anything else just feels shallow. But I understand what you mean about how it still makes it sad that it’s what draws them together.
I never noticed that Katniss reacts really similarly to Rue's age (23:33) and to Prim's name being called (23:57). She can't help but be horrified :( Also calling Peeta the United Nations of green flags was fantastic 😂
@ ok I didn’t remember that exact scene ,it’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie ,hence why I’m watching the video. I was simply making an observation
0:53 Divergent doesn't just represent a dystopia for entertainment. It presents a dystopia to analize the risks of playing with nature and especially genetics
Agreed, I don’t find it done quite as artfully as this series but it is good and I don’t like the lowering of one to raise another… which this video does a few times. Tris from Divergent was not presented as perfect either.
8:25 I’m not sure if you’ve read the books, so spoilers ahead. If you like the movies you’ll love the books. . . . Another reason why Haymitch is the way he is, is because he was punished by Snow for his win in the Quarter Quell. Like all the tributes, Snow punishes the victors despite the lavish lifestyle and celebrity status that comes with it. All of Haymitch’s loved ones were murdered as a result of his exploitation of the arena during his Games. He is completely alone on top of watching all of these children die and he is forced to relive the games every single year.
I think everyone needs to watch The Hunger Games ALONG WITH The Handmaid's Tale. While I absolutely love what THG does, both the later movies and later books glamorize "revolution." It's really only the prologue of the last book that explains hard enough what it all meant. I think The Handmaid's Tale better illustrates the day-to-day of an oppressive government, attempting to topple that government, and the retaliation and lingering impacts that ensue.
That is an insult to Peeta. United Nations is a useless toothless organization that does no good for anyone except for its smug, self-satisfied officials enjoying high salaries on cushy jobs.
Wouldn't it be crazy if the countries outside Panem see it the way we see North Korea? Panem is so isolated that the people of the Districts see their borders as the end and beginning of the world.
So now imma ask you to pick 5 random numbers and let me know what companies you're getting ready to invest in... Cuz this videos timing is so impeccable it has to be from precognition
@TerraJ-ug6nc hahahaha ig it all depends on who you’re asking. I think it’s unfortunate given the recent events, but hopefully it can bring ppl some light/escape for a bit
I think that started with the editors too (they pushed Collins to include the whole love triangle with Gale which she did not want initially). Even though I love Katniss and Peeta to bits, this is not a love story😭
I’m so happy you enjoyed the video and tysmmm for the support❤️❤️ and yes some of the scenes were deleted clips lmao. This video took forever to edit bc I kept wanting to add stuff to it which I tried to limit with subsequent videos😭😭
I do like your points but I wish you had used the books to explain your points as well as the movie cos the movies are great and does a pretty good job of following along the books but they do miss out a LOT and change a LOT. The books are from Katniss’s pov so I understand a lot of the changes, it’s hard to show all that visually but it’s so much more insightful, so much darker, more ruthless and seriously gives you a deep dive into the districts and the capital that the film doesn’t show. Plus the movies, believe it or not, soften a lot of the brutality of the capital cos omg are the games 100 times more terrifying and traumatic in the books. Also I personally wouldn’t describe Katniss as impulsive, her getting the berries out I guess could be described as impulsive but her volunteering for Rue most certainly wasn’t impulsive that was purposefully action she was not letting her sister go into those games and in the books I’d say she is pretty controlled, she’s just often uncertain, scared, unsure which causes her to make mistakes and act irrationally but she is most of the time conscious of her actions, words, what Snow will be thinking, what to show the audience, what Haymitch is communicating to her in the games cos he wasn’t sending notes with the sponsor gifts that was the films way of showing what Katniss in the books had interpreted what Haymitch was saying to her through the sponsor gifts and when she was getting them. For example, when she’s trying to find water on the first day and she is confused as to why Haymitch is letting her die of thirst she then realises it mush be him communicating to her that she is close to water.
Hi! Love the comment and I do agree that the books definitely go deeper when it comes to virtually all the characters. Though I didn’t focus much on them with this video, I made one on President Snow which relies more on TBOSBAS if you want to check that one out!
This is a great analysis of THG series. I agree with you, that it is great at depicting the cruelty of war, the dictatorship and the total impact, that it has on people. Well, one thing, on which I disagree with you, is the comparison between THG and TMR, because The Maze Runner tries to depict different aspects of dystopy. It touches the topics of global warming, spread of deseases and trials used for searching for the cure, that are made on children. Therefore, at least as I see it, The Maze Runner can't be compared with The Hunger Games as both are approching different topics.
Amazing breakdown! I love when people take the time to make nuanced analysis of this set of stories. It's eerie how Collins manages to draw reference to real world history in her fictonal world with such accuracy with how this form of political power works. Let's just hope the lame and lazy "critics" who's deepest thought of this franchise starts and ends at "this is just a Battle Royale rip-off" stays at a minimum.
Fun fact, the hunger games is getting banned from a bunch of states (within schools)
Yeah I saw some of the banned books and it also included Fahrenheit 451 which is very on the nose ngl

The Hunger Games is my favorite dystopian series and I loved all of your points!!!
Mine too! It’s an amazing franchise. I’m glad you liked the video:))
I love THG because in the end, Katniss went through everything for nothing because her sister dies. And that's just how life is sometimes.
What did her sister die of?

You are so well spoken! I feel like we don't often see such well done video essays about The Hunger Games.

Katnis is a good example how to write a female protagonist hero..
Gahahahah “the united nations of green flags” that made cackle. It’s so true 😂😂😂😂😂
Reesa Teesa truly inspired me there hahah❤️
I said it in the first upload and I'll say it again here. I've said the exact words Katniss said about never having children.
The genius of this series is it's fantastical enough to grip us as a media, but close enough to home to have us addicted.
Thank u for coming back!!:) and once again your comment is on point. And after the recent events, I think a lot of ppl may agree with Katniss here..
This was a GREAT video essay about The Hunger Games. You make me want to rewatch it and cry my eyes out
I remember this video! Sucks that TH-cam didnt let you keep it on your original channel. I re-watched it and am leaving a comment to help it in the algorithm!
Ahh thank you so much hahaha this truly does help with the algorithm🫶🫶
"Though I believe Peeta is the United Nations of green flags.." 😩😭😂😂
Agreed, the hunger games books are amazing and so are the movies, they really are in a class of their own.

@@rama2.0 I'm glad you saw my other comment, because I can't. xD
Im so happy this is back up! Thank you for creating this! :D
Thank you for watching it🫶🫶

It reminds you of all these things, but not North Korea? North Korea is divided up into districts, with even simple travel between them being completely restricted. They’re extremely oppressed to the point of it being required for every house to hold a picture of the great leaders. The Capitol and a few other richer districts can provide decent living standards (not including human rights), but they’re the 1%, where everybody else is on the verge of starving.
I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to NK but this is super interesting and drove me into a bit of a rabbit hole since reading your comment! Very very interesting comparison!
I wanted to quickly give a HUGE shoutout to the creator of this video - it was a well thought & well written essay with (this is the part that is extremely rare to see) the books and page numbers to support her ideas. super impressive!!

I've been analyzing and turning over THG for years and I just fully connected that Rue is meant for the viewers to realize what Katniss not volunteering would have meant just as much as she's a symbol of missing Prim/what she's fighting for in Katniss's eyes.

Me and my kitty Katniss really enjoyed watching this video! 😁
Omgg I love that🫶 give treats to Katniss on my behalf❤️❤️
After the recent election, i now believe that the hunger games are a historical documentary brought from the future
For your sakes, I truly hope it isn’t

Another reason why Haymitch is the way he is, is because he was punished by Snow for his win in the Quarter Quell. Like all the tributes, Snow punishes the victors despite the lavish lifestyle and celebrity status that comes with it. All of Haymitch’s loved ones were murdered as a result of his exploitation of the arena during his Games. He is completely alone on top of watching all of these children die and he is forced to relive the games every single year.
Excellent essay :)
When you realize we’re living in a dystopia

I think everyone needs to watch The Hunger Games ALONG WITH The Handmaid's Tale. While I absolutely love what THG does, both the later movies and later books glamorize "revolution." It's really only the prologue of the last book that explains hard enough what it all meant. I think The Handmaid's Tale better illustrates the day-to-day of an oppressive government, attempting to topple that government, and the retaliation and lingering impacts that ensue.
I see a video talking about the Hunger Games series, I watch immediately.
i genuinely believe suzanne collins is the smartest person alive
Don't think she ever had deep love for Peeta. He in the end understand her. He share her dreams and fears and lost.
Bread Boy truly is the United Nation's of Green Flags
That is an insult to Peeta. United Nations is a useless toothless organization that does no good for anyone except for its smug, self-satisfied officials enjoying high salaries on cushy jobs.
Wouldn't it be crazy if the countries outside Panem see it the way we see North Korea? Panem is so isolated that the people of the Districts see their borders as the end and beginning of the world.

Such a good video
I believe you mean, the genius of Battle Royale
I went to the same school overseas as Susanne Collins did, just years after her 😂
This is a great analysis of THG series.
Its the type of people that swear apples and oranges are exactly the same thing because their both fruit.
Thank you so much! I've been so obsessed with this franchise since I was maybe 10-11yo so it feels good to see that ppl still care about it 10 years later:) Collins is simply amazing, her knowledge is what truly sets these books/movies apart from the rest imo.
I did get some of these critics when I first uploaded this video on my other channel but so far so good lmaoo. I mean I did watch Battle Royale and it is good but I do prefer THG personally
