You can tell this movie had a lot of actual effort put into it, you know? I say this as someone who wasn’t the biggest fan of it, but it wasn’t a blatant cash grab like the Kissing Booth. It tried to authentically explore the trials and tribulations of adolescent romance, grief and drama, even if in my opinion it didn’t succeed in all these areas. It was genuine, and I enjoyed it for what it was.
Yes! The effort is totally there. I've always loved the set and costume design! You can absolutely tell how intentional it is and it creates a vibe for the whole universe of the movie that is very chic, yet relatable.
I read the full trilogy growing up! It was such a good adaptation, and as an Asian American I loved seeing the Yakult in the movie and all the Asian references. The only thing that was not really accurate to the book (that I remember, i read this a long time ago) was in the movie Kitty sent out the letters cause she thought that Lara Jean was lonely. In the book, Kitty talked about wanting to get a dog and Lara Jean told Josh that Kitty wanted to name the dog after him and Kitty wanted revenge.
YESS SAME!! The only thing is I’m half Asian and I’m sad that Lara Jean, a popular wasian character, was played by a full Asian actress. She did an amazing job but this was our chance to have wasian representation and we didn’t get it😭😭
@@-chenlanying5818In the books, Kitty had a crush on Josh and wanted to name the dog after him because of that. And Lara Jean was just teasing her abt it by telling Josh, which made Kitty feel embarrassed and in turn want to take revenge on her sister; And thus, sending out the letters.
As someone who's read the books many times, I think both versions are really good. I prefer the books because of how much detail you get (and there's more drama), but this movie is so cozy, well made and does capture the essence of lara jean and her coming of age story. The parts of the book that they changed and took out for the movie did simplify the story in some places but it made the story work in the movie framework.
THANK YOU!!! THIS!!!! Everyone hating on the book series cause it's messy aha like, what else are you reading a teen romcom for??? But I also love the books so much because all the characters grow so much, and I love remembering all the little details too. It's truly such a great book series!
I don’t understand why something being for children or teens has the pass of being bad, we all deserve good quality, good animated movies and romcoms 😭 this movie and the third are two of my recent go to along with do revenge, recently Lisa Frankenstein and Enola Holmes
Lisa Frankenstein is so good!! It totally gives odd Edward sccusorhands early 2000s Tim burton style movie, and I love the visuals soo much. Cult classic for sure.
13:05 fun fact: in the book, it’s not to make Jen jealous, but to prove to her that they are really done and he doesn’t want her back. Which I don’t love that they changed because it makes Peter seem like he’s just a guy using a girl to get his ex back and just wanted her back, when in the books he was showing her he didn’t want her anymore.
it's crazy as someone who's read the books thrice and watched the first movie so many times i nearly have it memorized frame for frame, i've never dissected the visual language that so clearly elevates this film above other romcoms of the past decade. this was so fun to watch for me!! (also you're so real for not watching the third because the second movie made you mad but that's a whole other convo lmaoooo) i would watch hours of your analysis 😭💕 thank you for your hard work, i'll probably rewatch this a few times tbh. and to answer your question: yes! i'd say the first film particularly is a great adaption. more than just following the book to the T, i think the film perfectly captures the warmth that made the book such a comfort read for me.
the main reason this movie worked so well is simply because laura jean actually feels like a real teen girl and her world feels genuinely lived in. like so many can see at least a little bit of themselves in her, and even if you can't anyone can pinpoint at least 1 girl they knew growing up that was very similar to her
I don’t think it’s a mistake that the two most popular teen rom coms are both Jenny Han book series. The summer I turned pretty has so many similar qualities and attention to detail
my mom loves rom coms, but she could never find the perfect movie that she could rewatch. My mom resonated with Laura jean and loved that they respected the character enough to not make her passed around once she was considered pretty.
Jenny Han writes really relatable, realistic and well rounded characters. She also writes her stories in a very immersive way, where you get to know why the characters do what they do and you get attached to them. To all the boys i loved before was such a good adaptation and such a moment in pop culture.
I think to all the boys I have loved before is such a classic 😭 it’s like 10 things I hate about you (the cultural significance not the plot) but from the late 2010s, when you rewatch it, it’s literally a time capsule
I will never shut up about how good To All The Boys I've Loved Before is-no matter how many times I rewatch it I'm always entertained with the storyline and characters. 👏👏🎉🎉
Do Revenge is another great teen movie for the visuals alone. The overall plot kind of borders redundant and camp, but the costume and set design? gorgeous.
I just love when things in movies and tv shows are intentional and you are always so great at picking it out! This video is so well done and the research in your video essays are incredible👏🏾👏🏾
this movie is unironically one of my favorite movies of all time and as a film major I've been clowned by others for saying how GOOD this movie is so thank you for making a video proving my point😌
The cinematography is amazing. The soundtrack, the clothes, the characters and the relationships are soothing. The lighting makes the aesthetic so warm.
I’m so happy you talked about this film! It was honestly so cute and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Many teen films nowadays or even romantic films are just aggravating. I loved how the main character wasn’t dressed frumpy, didn’t have to go through a whole transformation scene to be “beautiful” or “liked”.
One of my favourite things about the colour palette used in this movie, now that it’s been pointed out, is that when it shows the flashback of Laura Jean and Josh being friends she’s drinking the lemon version of Arizona iced tea which comes in a yellow teal and pink can. Even her drink choice is colour coordinated.
I already liked To All the Boys, even though I don't really like teen movies anymore, but this really helped to explain why this one feels so different. The use of color and style is especially impressive. ^^
ok the thoughts are genius. tbh, and author knows way more about what she wrote and why instead of the interpretations of someone else or a reader, so their input in movies like these are very very important, and , urgent.
honestly i think the movie captured the emotions that you get when you read the book so well. nothings too similar or too different, honestly a perfect adaptation.
I liked the movie so I wanted to read the book. But, oh boy, did I hate them. I love how much more complex and layered the characters are in the movie and how likable as well. I love they didn’t make Josh have feelings for her, but rather be a good friend and support her even though he was the one going through a breakup
I watched this movie for the first time the night before my first day of freshman year. I ended up staying up a little too late but all my nervousness about school was gone. It's just such a lovely happy movie.
The camerawork on this movie really elevated it. The framing where she is off center outside the diner is so perfect and really shows how artistic they wanted it to be
The first movie absolutely captured and built on the magic of the book, I read it as a teenager and it was my favorite book series. I was so excited for the second book as I liked it more than the first, and they cut so many plot points that made it so endearing and charming and it was a bit disappointing but still.
The first movie will always hold a special place for me. Truly love it one of the best original Netflix teen romances that doesn’t make me cringe. The visuals aesthetics and Lana and Noah’s chemistry is so good. I still wonder how much better the other two movies would’ve been if they stuck with the same director
this is one of my favorite comfort films and I love this analysis, especially the colors and what they represent. I'll have to watch it again and look out for these details!
Having read and loved the books, I LOVED the first movie and they really captured the cozy sweet vibe of the book. The ONLY change that bugged me was actually Gen's motive behind hating LJ...in the book, LJ and Peter were the last ones left at the middle school party and they kissed, which wasn't part of a game or anything. LJ knew Gen had a crush on Peter. Gen walked in on them and felt betrayed. That line of thought feels far less silly than the movie's motivation, which has her upset about a kiss during Spin the Bottle. It made Gen a bit more relatable and less just hardcore irrational mean girl. That's just my thoughts, though!
pointing out the color pallet feels so eye opening. there was always something so stunning about the visuals to me in this movie and could never put my finger on it until now!
I love how since i've been watching your video's, i've been notecing these little details in the movies I watch too. It makes it so much more interasting and you actually start to see the art in movies!
As someone who has read the books, the first one is pretty much the same except for the ending, and then the second and third lose a lot of the plot and certain characters from the books
3:19 I read it as an adult hahaha and it's a good adaptation, I was dreaming to have a teen love like that and a Peter ( I do have him, and yes his name is Pedro -spanish for Peter-), unfurtunally the secuel didn't get the magic that the first one had.
15:33 the second book had me not only mad at Peter but also rooting for John-Ambrose especially after the 50s dance and when he took her home and kissed her 😢
I cannot tell you how ecstatic I was to hear you say you have a love hate relationship with Peter AND WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT THE SECOND MOVIE, GIRL I WAS IN THE SAME POSITION!!! I didn't watch the third one for a YEAR and some change after it came out, but trust me it's worth it, HE GETS BETTER! the third one is my favorite. I've read the books and for me I don't completely understand the hype. How Peter is in the second movie he's like in ....basically all the books. Their relationship comes off toxic to me, especially when John comes into play, he just shows a lot of red flags. The MOVIES ABSOLUTELY PULLED THROUGH! (not counting the second one, I don't even acknowledge the second movie all due respect to EVERYONE, it's just not for me.) Genuinely, for the first time the movies are better than the books. (TO ME!) To call these movies (except the second one) "comfort movies" is an absolute understatement and you nailed every detail as to why they work. I literally remember thinking to myself "oh no here comes the love triangle" during the movie/bench scene and then she said she would never do that to Margot and I went "oh!" Beautiful.
you always put so much thought and effort into your commentaries and it's amazing just how well-versed you are. thank you for bringing quality back to youtube
Woah thank you for pointing out the doors! I've rewatched these movies dozens of times and never fully noticed that! I think the third movie is worth watching, but only because I love LJ and her ability to not be a perfect protagonist, instead being one that grows. Plus it also let's us meet Dae, kitty's love interest for her spinoff show. Who knows, maybe one day Jenny Han will give us a Margo spinoff too. Sorry random ramble over😅 great video, I really enjoyed your attention to details
Im a 30 year old woman with a 38 year old boyfriend and weve watched to all the boys trilogy at least three times in total. Its SUCH a heartwarming film for when you're sick or depressed. Its awkward but in a realistic and not too exaggerated way. Youre constantly thinking "that couldve been me in my teens!" And the cast is really good. The colours and the style of everyone is pretty af but not too unrealistic like euphoria e.g.
I never watched this cuz its got a lot of anxiety and embarrassment in it which would probably trigger my own. Grateful to see it through this lens to maybe prepare me enough to watch it (or read it!) myself one day
your points about the intentionality of the visuals, sets, and fashion remind me of bottoms (2023) -- another teen movie, though completely different tonally, that is so so good
To be honest when I first watched this movie I wasn't a big fan, but this video helped me develop a new appreciation for it. I'm gonna go rewatch and reread the books now lol.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower and To All the Boys I've Loved Before are teen movies that I love to watch over and over again. Lara Jean and Charlie are both such lovable and relatable protagonists.
This is such a wonderful video! Thank you for taking the time to put it all together. I particularly loved everything you pointed out about colours as I hadn’t consciously noticed this! Thoroughly enjoyed watching this on my lunch break 🙌🙌🙌❤️
It didn’t take itself too seriously like most cringy teen media and that was honestly what made it so good. The characters are so silly and they’re kids and they know it. She’s not ashamed to be a girly, preppy teen girl, and that shows. She’s okay with who she is and doesn’t feel the need to bring down other women and the absence of the unfortunate “NLOG” teen trope adds so much to this story.
Love this movie!! Love that instead of defeating the Mean girl she reconciles with her (while still standing up for herself), love that they made actors look like teenagers, love the dreamy shy but not a pushover heroine! Great movie! And a great video, thank you!!
Thank you for this video! I agree the colour harmonizing is powerful and I didn’t even notice it was happening. Heartstopper is a recent YA show that uses colour beautifully! It makes such a difference when the watching experience is a visual treat that shows how much thought and effort went into it
You have absolutely blown my mind with how the colours in this movie have symbolism. I always loved the visuals of this film but the thought behind it makes it even better.
the feeling that i had watching the first movie i wish i could have had for the last 2 movies. it was so good. the cinematography, colour grading & overall aesthetic of the movie was amazing and its what caught my eye while watching. lara jean was so relatable as a character and peter kavinsky had all the girls in a chokehold. when they switched directors, the change in quality was sooo obvious - the only scenes that stood out to me was the last scene in the 2nd movie and the nyc scenes in the 3rd. nothing is beating the first one
I did read the books when I was a teenager and I do think that the movies really captured the spirit of the books and I think all of the changes makes sense and I’m okay with that however they cut some of my favorite passages and so that’ll always make me a little bitter, but I love these movies like I love this movie the first one whenever I just need something on it’s great
Netflix and other movie companies should be taking notes because it is great to have the author be involved and be able to show and explain what the readers liked about the book in the first place.
I'm just a minute in and I agree with you! I don't even need to hear the rest lol Watching this for the first time gave me the same feeling as watching those classic romcoms. It's really well made for a movie with its demographic and I appreciate it a lot.

I think the majority of them were in their early twenties (think 20 to 24)
i will die on the hill that to all the boys (1st movie only) is SUCH a good movie. i remember being SO disappointed with the second one, and the third one was okay but nothing stood out to me like the first movie. i am obsessed, it is so cute, the chemistry between lana and noah is so good. i will die
I agree but it’s mainly bc they changed the director from the first movie sadly. You can tell in the quality for sure
YESSSSS
@@hayley623 it is sooo sad :( i didnt know until recently and no wonder
SAME i would die 4 this movie
She did an amazing job but this was our chance to have wasian representation and we didn’t get it😭😭
ha ha I remember this in the book!!!
@@ladydiamond6611 why did LJ told Josh that Kitty wanted to named to dog after him ? And why did Kitty got mad about that ?
@@-chenlanying5818In the books, Kitty had a crush on Josh and wanted to name the dog after him because of that. And Lara Jean was just teasing her abt it by telling Josh, which made Kitty feel embarrassed and in turn want to take revenge on her sister; And thus, sending out the letters.
I kinda understand Kitty. I don't justify her actions but LJ was out of line.
Enola Holmes is so goooood
Lisa Frankenstein is so good!! It totally gives odd Edward sccusorhands early 2000s Tim burton style movie, and I love the visuals soo much. Cult classic for sure.
@@tarathoughts13 I really hope it becomes an icon cause I don’t remember the last time a movie had me so focused on the TV
@@tarathoughts13I was thinking of watching this movie! Hoping it’s as good as people say:)
(also you're so real for not watching the third because the second movie made you mad but that's a whole other convo lmaoooo)
i would watch hours of your analysis 😭💕 thank you for your hard work, i'll probably rewatch this a few times tbh.
and to answer your question: yes! i'd say the first film particularly is a great adaption. more than just following the book to the T, i think the film perfectly captures the warmth that made the book such a comfort read for me.
thank you!! 🤗 I'm so glad this is such a good adaptation! it's the best feeling when a beloved book is actually done justice, but so rare to find 💛💛
The thumbnail is the realest thing I've read today😭🙌
oohhh so I'm actually testing 3 different versions. which one did you see??
A gem amongst Trash😭😂😂🙌

OMG i know i wasn’t tripping that it changed
the main reason this movie worked so well is simply because laura jean actually feels like a real teen girl and her world feels genuinely lived in. like so many can see at least a little bit of themselves in her, and even if you can't anyone can pinpoint at least 1 girl they knew growing up that was very similar to her
I don’t think it’s a mistake that the two most popular teen rom coms are both Jenny Han book series. The summer I turned pretty has so many similar qualities and attention to detail
wow i never even noticed the red at the scary scenes, but i did subconsciously pick up on it. her red jacket at the love confession stands out majorly
my mom loves rom coms, but she could never find the perfect movie that she could rewatch.
The future classic ❤
I will never shut up about how good To All The Boys I've Loved Before is-no matter how many times I rewatch it I'm always entertained with the storyline and characters. 👏👏🎉🎉
Do Revenge is another great teen movie for the visuals alone. The overall plot kind of borders redundant and camp, but the costume and set design? gorgeous.
I just love when things in movies and tv shows are intentional and you are always so great at picking it out! This video is so well done and the research in your video essays are incredible👏🏾👏🏾
thank you so much!! 🫶🤗
this movie is unironically one of my favorite movies of all time and as a film major I've been clowned by others for saying how GOOD this movie is so thank you for making a video proving my point😌
Man, I would just love video essays on all the "To All the Boys" movies. These movies are cheesy masterpieces that I can watch again and again!!!
this is my favorite movie of all time. i listen to songs from the soundtrack almost everyday!! this movie is such a comfort for me.
The cinematography is amazing. The soundtrack, the clothes, the characters and the relationships are soothing. The lighting makes the aesthetic so warm.
Not the queen doing a video of my all-time favorite movie!!
I really didn't expect to like this movie this much as i was already in my 20s but it's just so good!
also the soundtrack for to all the boys is the BESTTT and i'm still obsessed with it
I liked the movie so I wanted to read the book. But, oh boy, did I hate them. I love how much more complex and layered the characters are in the movie and how likable as well. I love they didn’t make Josh have feelings for her, but rather be a good friend and support her even though he was the one going through a breakup
i cant believe you hated them......they were so good..... TT
As a quiet introverted girl who loves dressing up, i liked allll Lara's outfits and i related to her personality more. Shy but not a push over
As a 19 teen year old this movie makes me want to date again😭💘
I watched this movie for the first time the night before my first day of freshman year. I ended up staying up a little too late but all my nervousness about school was gone. It's just such a lovely happy movie.
This is one of my comfort movies ill never get tired of it
The camerawork on this movie really elevated it.
Tatlib is justt so realistic, lara jean and peter are so cuteee
The first movie will always hold a special place for me. Truly love it one of the best original Netflix teen romances that doesn’t make me cringe. The visuals aesthetics and Lana and Noah’s chemistry is so good. I still wonder how much better the other two movies would’ve been if they stuck with the same director
PLEASE make an Uglies video bestie
i think i need to 😭 i have so many thoughts
Videos like this help me appreciate movies like this more.
I am really blind to hints and things shown through visuals colours and themes.
this is one of my favorite comfort films and I love this analysis, especially the colors and what they represent. I'll have to watch it again and look out for these details!
Such a great breakdown! I typically don't enjoy newer teen movies and I couldn't put my finger on exactly why I love this series. You nailed it 👏🏾
"Nothing good or bad can happen if you just think about it" is actually is very good advice
Omg!!! That was amazing!! The points, loopholes, editing, it was all there!! Never stop making content!!! Love ur videos 💜
3:19 I read it as an adult hahaha and it's a good adaptation, I was dreaming to have a teen love like that and a Peter ( I do have him, and yes his name is Pedro -spanish for Peter-), unfurtunally the secuel didn't get the magic that the first one had.
You mentioned the teal, but I was also looking at the color grading, and it looks exactly like polaroids!!
this video is top tier, I will be rewatching it. I adore this and just had to tell you how fantastical and lovely it is.
15:33 the second book had me not only mad at Peter but also rooting for John-Ambrose especially after the 50s dance and when he took her home and kissed her 😢
Your analysis is very complete. This video is amazing
(TO ME!)
To call these movies (except the second one) "comfort movies" is an absolute understatement and you nailed every detail as to why they work. I literally remember thinking to myself "oh no here comes the love triangle" during the movie/bench scene and then she said she would never do that to Margot and I went "oh!" Beautiful.
literally just rewatched this movie earlier this week! love ur videos, this is just what i needed
you always put so much thought and effort into your commentaries and it's amazing just how well-versed you are. thank you for bringing quality back to youtube

@@artatmidnight eee Ofcc!
The colours and the style of everyone is pretty af but not too unrealistic like euphoria e.g.
oh please do watch the third one, it was kind of frustrating but it was sweet.
I never watched this cuz its got a lot of anxiety and embarrassment in it which would probably trigger my own. Grateful to see it through this lens to maybe prepare me enough to watch it (or read it!) myself one day
I watched it and loved it but I don’t get you what do you mean by anxiety and embarrassment?😅
your points about the intentionality of the visuals, sets, and fashion remind me of bottoms (2023) -- another teen movie, though completely different tonally, that is so so good
To be honest when I first watched this movie I wasn't a big fan, but this video helped me develop a new appreciation for it. I'm gonna go rewatch and reread the books now lol.
I LOVE LOVE LOVED John Corbett as the girl’s dad!!! He SCREAMS girl dad in the best way!
HEY!. I absolutely love your video essays and they are super descriptive and fun to watch and listen. the way you describe every single thing is just mindblowing and the efforts you put are astonishing. i actually had a little thought more like a suggestion. i have not seen much video essays on 13 Reasons Why and i think you should try on that its an interesting topic and i would love for you to dive into it. its just a small suggestion i hope this comment catches your eye. At last, i wish you all the best and love your vids. KEEP UP!! PERIODT.
loved this video!! this movie is my absolute favorite. while i knew i liked the movie because of its cozy atmosphere, beautiful visuals, cute storyline, and the chemistry between the leads, i never knew how much thought when into this movie! all the color symbols and strategic outfit choices make me appreciate the movie even more 😍
The Perks of Being a Wallflower and To All the Boys I've Loved Before are teen movies that I love to watch over and over again.

I’m so glad someone’s talking about this movie. I kept looking for commentaries about it. And there’s barley any
I always wondered why this movie resonated with me so much, thanks for breaking it down :)
20:52 i was just telling my bf about how much i love your channel 😭💖💕
I always loved the visuals of this film but the thought behind it makes it even better.
one of my fav movies!! thank you for this!
I needed to hear the part about chronic daydreaming, so thank you for that
14:40 finally, someone who is also still mad abt that scrunchie.
Omg when I watched this movie I was thinking the same thing about the color palette!!!! ❤ I love your videos sm you are so right
to all the boys was literally PERFECTION
the feeling that i had watching the first movie i wish i could have had for the last 2 movies. it was so good. the cinematography, colour grading & overall aesthetic of the movie was amazing and its what caught my eye while watching. lara jean was so relatable as a character and peter kavinsky had all the girls in a chokehold. when they switched directors, the change in quality was sooo obvious - the only scenes that stood out to me was the last scene in the 2nd movie and the nyc scenes in the 3rd. nothing is beating the first one
I LOVE THE WAY YOU TALK ABOUT COLOUR
Loved that video ! You went into great detail. I never noticed the color patterns or Margot's necklaces !
i loved this video essay. you pointed out so. many things i noticed, but couldn't put into words :)
