Jiyoon is one of my favorite contestants from all of the survival shows I've watched because of how straight-forward and honest she is about literally everything (no further spoilers but she's queenie). The reactions for her in this episode were REALLY mixed but i've also kind of noticed that the people who disliked her attitude were mostly straight so i guess maybe that says something? #gaysforjiyoon
I think at the time, this Jiyoon villain edit was really perceived by the audience as exactly that, an edit. I saw people really rallying around Jiyoon and wanting to vote for her specifically BECAUSE she was being portrayed like this. No one hated her. It's also really funny in hindsight, because, and I hope this is not a spoiler, but the events of this episode, like... keep coming up. Throughout the season. This is really a season-long narrative. And I really think you're gonna enjoy it ;-)

Here's the thing. At that time my thought was: 1. She did not do well in assigned position and was an headache during practice, yet she sulk for not being voted to stay. 2. She's older than Jungeun, so she must be the one to be more understanding instead she's like a child sulking over it. 3. I hate it when she ranked 4th and Jungeun ranked 8th ( they switched ranks), and she said to her how does it feel to be in rank 8 now. I'm like, oh come on it's been weeks and you still act like that. 4. Not to mention those moments she ignored Jungeun, like the heck you're 2 years older than her act like it. 5. My opinion, she played her role well, like from villain to goody good. I guess it all worked out since she debut. Good for her. Again these are just my observations and opinions.
as someone who loves jiyoon now, this ep def threw me off from her and i remember a lot of other people felt the same. without spoiling anything it's interesting to revisit this and see what has and hasn't changed with her, but absolutely many people were annoyed but she still kept a strong fanbase! she was very similar to K in iland bc of this
The Jiyoon arc had me gripped fr. Especially the way I gasped when she said "I don't know about that" left. And you guys discussion on it didn't disappoint lol.
Your comments helped me to see a different perspective on Jungeun in this episode. On 1st watch, her method of assigning positions felt clique-ish to me, but I now see that it could be mature and strong, especially for someone her age.
Editing can easily create drama, and drama creates engagement... so Mnet must've been thanking their lucky stars when Jiyoon gave them the ammunition... When you control the editing... you control people's potential perception of reality... (that's a Dune-land quote fr 😀) I will actually give you an excellent example of this that will not spoil anything, but rather add show adjacent knowledge hehe. Jungeun, Saebi and Sarang trained together and were close for ages, over 3 years in the case of Jungeun and Saebi, 2+ years in the case of Sarang...and amazingly... Jungeun was apparently used to leadering them hehe, it pretty much came like second nature. The three of them had a much better relation, and were far closer than it is portrayed... If you were to watch Mnet's portrayal of reality you would be hard pressed to figure this one out for ages and ages... So basically editing can not just generate narratives, but also hide everything that does not fit... Without spoiling anything... I can tell you that if you want drama... this show will deliver! 😈

I did a cappella in college, so what we see from Jiyoon in the beginning of the show really didn’t endear her to me. It gave me flashbacks to all my worst memories of stressful rehearsals. It may be refreshing to see someone just “be in their feelings” on TV, but in a group (especially in an ensemble setting where teamwork is the most important thing), it creates 80% of the problems and makes the experience miserable for everyone else, ESPECIALLY the leaders. Because of this, it was really interesting for me to see Jiyoon’s story arc develop through the episodes.
52:29 Most of the international audience ate it up because it was iconic (duh) BUT the ONLY reason (and I say this with utmost confidence) the netizens also ate it up was because they started to despise Jungeun (for racist and f*up reasons like "her skin is too dark", "she is ugly", etc) so when Jiyoon started acting up with Jungeun specifically they just kind of picked her side. which is really fucking sad in general but Jiyoon lucked out massively, if this was girl's planet and she acted out against a korean with the k-beauty standards they liked she would've been eliminated first round for sure - not like mnet was doing her any favours with the editing either lmao

i also had the same experience as jiyoon in high school theatre, the difference was i had a breakdown in my car instead of throwing a fit in front of the cast list like baby cmon😭😭
