Actually you're kinda right both ways! It was 2 weeks for the viewers and a month for the trainees! Because I remember after Iland finished there was an "I-land training camp" episode that showed what the trainees did over that month before the first eliminations were announced and part 2 happened
Hey girls! I’m happy to see Nate back revealing the real time tea. Now I am going to go on the angriest rant of my life. As you can probably guess, this by far my least favorite episode and the worst episode in the show imo. The writing was the worst it’s ever been, the critiques were terrible, and how the show treated Hanbin was cruel. It made me absolutely livid watching this live and I still get chills whenever I think about it (I was sweating watching this recap lol). Because you guys were exactly right, NONE of his criticisms had any sort of backing, nothing is explained or made any sense because he had no screen time and barely any feedback, people basically had to resort to theorizing to figure out what was going on in the judges heads. It’s so upsetting because you could see the producers bending over backwards to make Hanbin look bad enough to be eliminated. the random criticisms, the way they complained about his dancing the entire time until the performance where suddenly it was his vocals that were the problem. I remember being pissed about that “uncool” critique, it made no sense and it felt anti-babygirl coded and the “your voice sticks out too much” critique also made me mad. Like obviously, he sang half the song! Like I know they were probably trying to critique his tone, which I can understand, but there’s also a point where he just sounds like that, like it’s the ingrained color of his voice he can’t just “fix” that, especially with the nonexistent vocal coaching on this show. The way that his audio was more raw than the others(everyone was pissed, the expose videos were piping hot). Even the song Flame On(which is a bad song choice for multiple reasons) being THE MOST technically demanding number on this show, physically and vocally. I could kind of understand the judges said his dancing wasn’t powerful enough, but when you see the performance and realize he has to BELT HALF OF THE SONG, how did they expect him to do all that while dancing as powerfully as the others??? Like of course he was going to struggle, he’s exhausted! I remember the discourse around the episode saying that even all the high notes in sound out of place and forced in the composition, especially for iland when we haven’t seen anyone sing a “high note” since part 1. Like why now? Why this song? Especially when there aren’t any vocalists on the team.
Awww I’m really flattered. I’ve been anticipating/dreading this moment the whole series. I’ve had several weeks to think about this and having Nate on was such a pleasure. I totally get him wanting to be on this episode because there’s really so much to say. And to Nate’s point, I agree completely, Hanbin wasn’t “Hybe”, he was never the type of artist that Hybe would promote, especially not at the time and probably not now either. And he was amazing for that, it was so refreshing to see an artist in Hybe that was different and broke the mold. Hanbin was so good and unique in way that Hybe couldn’t comprehend, there was no lane for him in that company and there wasn’t enough people that wanted to make that lane for him. Somebody wanted him, he wouldn’t have been recruited to be a Belift trainee otherwise(or you could argue that they just wanted him for the diversity but anyway). That became obvious when they so clearly wanted to capitalize on his popularity, but could not figure out what to do with him. Hybe has a style that they know does well and they stick to it, Hanbin was a complete wild card for them. While a part of it is probably the fact that he’s Vietnamese, him being a foreigner is part of the larger issue of Hybe not wanting to promote anything that’s not safe or too unfamiliar because it would effect the group’s popularity, domestically or otherwise. They wanted to see unity, power, athleticism, and synchronicity which is what BTS was known for globally at the time. I imagined them wanting something like a chorus line or a corps de ballet, where their power and impact comes from them working together as a group rather than individually. If we think from a Hybe standpoint, eliminating Hanbin made a lot of sense, especially seeing how Enhypen has developed as a group. I remember watching a TH-cam video that said that every member of Enhypen has nearly the exact same energy to the point where they all look one person on stage, and I agree. While I think that Sunoo stands out a bit for his facial expressions, his body language is laid back enough for him to blend well into the group and I think he’s learned to assimilate well with group’s energy over time. Hanbin’s energy is completely different, at least in my opinion, he’s bright, energetic, bubbly, expressive, and passionate when he performs so he always stands out. Even from a dancing standpoint, he has a different style from everyone else, he basically learned a different genre of dance which is why he couldn’t learn a hiphop routine in one day, because he wasn’t trained in hiphop. He probably could’ve learned Chamber 5 in five days, because the choreography is a typical idol choreography, which was Hanbin’s specialty since he learned to dance by dancing to K-pop choreography on the street.
I personally think that the reason Sunoo didn’t choose Hanbin for Chamber 5 wasn’t because he thought he couldn’t do it. I think he wanted to be strategic by taking away Sunghoon since he was Flame On’s leader, but he didn’t want to be too mean and take away Hanbin. It didn’t show much(obviously), but the other contestants comments hinted toward them desperately wanting to not lose Hanbin, probably because he was the only one on the team with a range high enough for those awful high notes. So I think Sunoo thought that they would be fine without Sunghoon but not without Hanbin. Hanbin and Sunoo were really close on the show(they did their skincare routine together), so I’m sure he would have loved to do Chamber 5 with Hanbin in other circumstances. Anyway back to the point, the judges were essentially right, Hanbin does stick out too much. But the part that they don’t mention is that it’s not necessarily a bad thing or something he should/can fix because most of that is due to just him being him. And a lot of fans adore him for that and wouldn’t want him to change. So in retrospect, it all worked out for the better, although people were upset about him leaving Hybe(due to stupid Hybe loyalty/privilege). He works really well in Tempest because all the boys are so different from each other, so they are unified in their uniqueness. And it’s great to see him in a group where he is loved and appreciated, even by the staff, because he really deserves it after iland tore the poor man to shreds. Then the question is, if they just didn’t think Hanbin fit the group they had in mind for whatever reason and that it wasn’t necessarily his skills or performances that weren’t good enough, then why didn’t they just say that? Instead of making the effort to force-feed unproductive criticism and edit him to look way worse than the others. If it was to make sure the audience wasn’t upset over his elimination, they did a bad job because the audience was mad anyways. Or was the reason he was eliminated just too political for reality television? The way they danced around it made it seem like they had no respect towards Hanbin or his work on the show. Needless to say, I lost my respect for Bang PD that day and I still don’t have much respect for him today lol.
And I haven’t even talked about the ending. Where Hanbin was the only one smiling while everyone else was sobbing uncontrollably(including me). His strength was truly inspiring and his promise to his fans that he’d debut someday touched my heart. His fans really hung on to that promise until he debuted, predebut purgatory was really rough. And I was just annoyed with the way Bang PD was like “you learned so much, think about this experience in the future” like he still could not get a single compliment. And how the show was like “he lit up the room with his smile” acting like they actually cared and that they weren’t actively avoiding him this whole time. To be honest, this singular episode really gutted the entire show for me, like I could not enjoy it anymore after this, so it was a good thing that there was only one episode left, although that episode is still just as depressing and way too long. Also something else I just thought of, I think it’s suspicious that Hanbin placed 4th in the global voting when the prize was for the top 3, so Hanbin just barely didn’t make it…….I’m just saying. If I had to guess, it’s probably because Mnet was too lazy to translate an entire phone call from Vietnamese to Korean, but that’s just a theory.
Anyway, this has been a very long rant so I’ll leave off with a couple fun facts. One kind of funny one is that when the Hanbin fans found out he was eliminated, they were so upset that a lot of them declared that they would stop watching the show and boycott the group. I think the day or the day after the episode aired, Hanbin uploaded a video on his dance crew’s TH-cam channel saying that he was grateful for his fans’ support and to keep supporting his friends who were still on iland. The theory is that Hybe/CJ ENM requested for him to make a video for the fans because they wanted to do damage control after finding out everyone was so upset with the result. Another cuter fact is that Hanbin bakes for his group members in his free time. His sister also bakes and owns a bakery in Vietnam that has a Hanbin and Tempest shrine. He is also a hobby photographer, he even posts a reel of his photography every month on twitter/fan cafe(I’m not sure) for the fans to see. He is also the group’s resident TikTok video director. Honestly, he makes more content for the group than Yuehua does. He is a one man army. That was definitely a lot of words, I hope you’re having fun. I’ll be back next week for more pain but at least it’s almost over.
y’all’s takes on i-land are so fun to listen to. as an engene without any engene friends watching ur recap feels like i’m just hanging out with my besties 😭 thank you for your hard work and for continuing to post amazing content!!! 🩵
I am so happy i found this reaction because this clearly shows something that i think you guys caught onto, and its that some people still cant compliment NI-KI wholeheartedly for some reason, even if they say they have moved on and that they are happy the other boys got into &Team they still take every chance they get to shoot shots at enhypen somehow OFC they know they cant touch sunoo but it has been a drag for people who left the fandom when they found out NI-KI made it to call themselves engene this is a prime example because this podcast that nate hosted stopped activity after the show and was so depressed and angry that NI-KI made it that they quit LOL and didnt even follow their debut then they tried to start up again once they heard &Team was going to debut
The only real reason why they had to eliminate Hanbin this round was because he will definitely win in votes in the finale= be part of enhypen. If hanbin made it in ep12, mnet would have to rig the votes
this has always been my thought process too, that they absolutely did not want hanbin in enhypen and the only way they could make sure he wasn’t was if they had the producers vote him out before the finale
I remember I knew Hanbin was going to leave on this episode cause the boy had like zero screen time during the whole show and he was still going strong, so he had to be eliminated by producers before the finale. I was still hopeful they wouldn't though....
The lack of women' perspectives and opinions did carry to enhypens postdebut direction too imo, like sometimes you can look at the choices that were made for the concept/marketing strategy/direction and just KNOWS the board behind it were a bunch of middle aged men 😂
The finale gagged me to no end. You know watching it who gets into the group but the places some of them got surprised me. I am excited to see what you think about it. Also thank you Nate for coming back and giving us more insight.
the only way I could make sense of Hanbin's vocal critique was to think that they wanted everyone to blend more. Of course I'm pretty sure they praised Jungwon's unique tone. Anyway, it's true that we love him with Tempest. Still seeing tiktok comments just discovering that he debuted, though 😅
This is still my favourite Iland episode just because it’s the one sunghoon centric episode and seeing him work so hard to catch up after learning a completely different dance and concept was so fascinating to me- also just seeing him in his cute little purple suit and be all smiley, idk like he was already my bias since the beginning but this really really solidified it for me. And especially after him being so affraid to look cute or silly in pretty u it was a really nice way to show off his different selling points 💜💜
I think after the finale, you guys should watch the first episode of [ENHYPEN&Hi]. I remember they had some BTS (behind the scenes). When they took the van to their dorms (from like literally the finale venue) and said goodbye to K. That was like really sad to watch. Everyone was crying, and I think Nikki kept hugging K.
I remember watching this live, and the differences in the rankings each week was wild. Actually, Zico enlisted right after part 1, so he was unable to film for part 2 because he was "serving". Also, for the cleaning bit, they did have housekeepers because fans were super worried right around when BTS was there because we found out shortly after that that a housekeeper had tested positive for COVID-19 and the ARMY fans were worried about the health of the boys as well, that's probably how the comforters stayed so white. I am not sure how often they cleaned, but I am sure they could come in almost daily while the boys were practicing. Haha
I remember thinking the results from the rest of the season were refreshingly straightforward, and then the finale results were the most drawn-out I've ever seen 😵
Love to see Nate back! Btw can we please have you guys reacting to Singles Inferno 3?? Hahaha its such a dramatic mess and would love to see your input!
I wouldn’t say it’s his best performance (I think the I-incredible performance from part 1 was) BUT I AGREE HE WAS THE BEST IN THIS- even though his part was so small but he was so lovely and sweet in chamber 5
It's useless information but I just wanted to clarify: Zico couldn't do part 2 of I-land because he got summoned to do his 2 year commitment in the military/public service.

Hanbin was the one elimination in iland that I could not forgive :( it was so unfair and 1000000% targetted. poor guy couldve outsang heeseung and we would never know
Jungwon was clearly the worst in chamber 5, he felt awkward, and recycled a lot of his gestures. Hanbin clearly deserved the last place, his teammates trusted him to have a lot of lines, and his voice was just not giving, like at all
CORRECTION: It was, indeed, two weeks between Part 1 & Part 2. You can grill me in the reply comments below ⬇️

Hi, i love your reaction about I-Land, but after this reaction, can you both do &AUDITION Reaction??? That is survival show who made &TEAM
I want them to release CHAMBER 5
It's useless information but I just wanted to clarify: Zico couldn't do part 2 of I-land because he got summoned to do his 2 year commitment in the military/public service.
I had forgotten about that, but yes! I remember that announcement happening shortly after his departure. And him and Rain dropping Summer Hate.

now i need a clip of jolly santa bang pd
Will you guys do &Audition in the future?

bighit was such a sausage fest for so many years and that reallyyyy comes through in the borderline overbearing masculine energy of this show
Hanbin was the one elimination in iland that I could not forgive :( it was so unfair and 1000000% targetted. poor guy couldve outsang heeseung and we would never know
Why the fk are you calling Heeseung name.
Jungwon was clearly the worst in chamber 5, he felt awkward, and recycled a lot of his gestures.
Hanbin clearly deserved the last place, his teammates trusted him to have a lot of lines, and his voice was just not giving, like at all
