Texas Cichlid: Breeding

  • Wild-caught Texas Cichlids (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) laying and fertilizing eggs on 1/19/2011. Almost all of the eggs hatched successfully. The male's dorsal fin was permanently damaged in its natural environment, probably when it was younger. The camera used was all we could find to capture this moment, and couldn't use a tripod. The next part will feature the fry hatching and becoming free swimmers, with the use of better equipment. More info at www.aquaticopia.com/fish/texas...

    @kikefaris I find it difficult to sex these fish outside of a group - adult males in very good health will have a nuchal hump on the forehead. Your best bet is to look at the forehead 'slope' in the absence of nuchal development. Additionally, look at the finnage, males would likely have longer dorsal and anal fin extensions (pointed instead of rounded tips). It is possible to cross those two species, however doing so would likely be difficult and if successful, be sure to label those fish well!
