    Video Information:
    Ghost Shrimp can be collected in many freshwater bodies, or bought from most pet stores as feeder-shrimp. The ones featured in this video are wild collected by using a strong light and net from a dock. Be sure to have a fishing license and check with local and state laws before collecting. Always collect responsibly. If setup properly, these shrimp will flourish in the aquarium and can be used as feeders or for enjoyment.

    After days of looking for videos of ghost shrimp on youtube (I just got some so I want to be educated on them), this is the best and most informative video I've seen. Thank you so much for posting this!

    At the end of the year I will be getting fish for my small tank again and of those ghost shrimp will be apart of it. I have done reaserch on them and I can answer some of the questions. They do not need saltwater to breed, they are freshwater invertebrates. They get about 1 inch and do not eat other fish. They do get a little aggressive with age but are very docile. They will jump when there is no cover or the water is low. Thank you for reading TH-cam.

    I love feeding my shrimp flakes for this reason, that you can see the flake color going through their digestion tract.

    @Thehumancat1 The larval babies eat microscopic stuff...I don't go out of my way to feed them as they can survive on the leftovers from the others. Once they have their first molt and become mini-shrimp, they will try to tackle all the same food objects as the parents. I just had a 2 week old shrimp try to eat a frozen blood worm! For practicality, feed them fish foods/algae wafers that will soften/dissolve so they can have access to smaller particles. I hope to post a video of this soon...

    Hi! Appreciate the video! May I ask what song you're using?

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @PlecoFreak Filtration depends if you have live plants, overfeeding, water changes, or there are other fish/snails/shrimp in the tank as well. For my 2.5, I usually use a tiny submersible powered filter. There's also nano-HOBs you can use. It would be preferred to filter the water, as just a small bit of pollution goes a long ways in little water. Also, a filter is good for delivering oxygen, which they can be sensitive towards. If you have many plants or don't overfeed, it may not require it.

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @SmittyKat Thanks SmittyKat for the positive feedback! I'm currently working on a second video segment showing young. It should include showing some of their feeding habits (daphnia, blood worms, and various other commercial food stuffs). They are very easy to take care of as long as they have enough terracing/hiding spots when overcrowded! The main thing is to cover the intake to any filters with sponge if you plan to breed them, otherwise just give them a varied diet - they're undemanding!

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @PlecoFreak ah cool, I see you got some! I'm outside and it's hard to see the screen on my computer, how many did you end up getting? Looks like a great start there. I'm guessing you don't have an air-stone or a valve to regulate the flow from the pump? That's a nifty little trick with the rubber-band + rock. If you could, I'd let a little more air through (such a large bubble doesn't dissolve much into water, and the low-flow may be insufficient surface disturbance for adequate gas exchange).

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @SimplyxForever33 I've never witnessed this in a tank with adequate food and space provided for each specimen. I have had instances where the shrimp ate newborn fish, but never aggression towards anything larger. How many guppies and shrimp do you keep, and in what size tank?

    i do not know if the other 2 will eat the babies but when does the eggs get released or hatch?

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @spydrago Sorry about the delay! They can eat just about anything - flakes or pellets. As for optimal nutritition, you might try to find something specifically for freshwater invertebrates, but its not necessary.

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @PlecoFreak what color are the eggs? From initial fertilization, it takes about a month, but it depends how long ago they were fertilized. If they are green in color, they will take a while. If they are dark or clear, they are closer to hatching. You will be able to barely see the eyes of the shrimp through the eggs if you are able to look close enough.The other shrimp wont eat babies unless there is no food for them at all, you can feed them small amounts of flake food and it should be okay.

    How many ghost shrimp could be put in a 2.5 gallon tank?
    does the ghost shrimp need filter?

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @PlecoFreak It really depends on everything else you plan to have in the tank. Generally, the more plants/rocks/wood and other things there are to climb on/around/in, the more shrimp you can have. For a 2.5, I never put more than 3 adult shrimp in mine, but it really depends on many other factors.

    @Aquaticopia Can Ghost Shrimp tolerate AQUARIUM salt? I follow the rule of 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons, and the tank I am getting is 3 gallons, so 3/5 of a tablespoon. Is this okay?
    I also read that ghost shrimp are sensitive to water changes. How can you make sure the ghost shrimp will not die from stress or whatever? Please respond, and thank you.

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Videotime1030 Yes, they certainly do. In a later video I made, there are several clips showing both adults and juvenile shrimp eating unfrozen blood worms (video titled: "Ghost Shrimp Feeding & Offspring").

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @iamhazel200 I'm not sure about the freeze-dried type (as I haven't tried), but they definitely eat frozen and life blood worms. In another video titled "Mosquito Larvae Meal", there's a ghost shrimp greedily eating a mosquito larva (which is how they chow on the blood worms as well).

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those were likely eggs. If they were clear and are now gone, they probably hatched! Keep an eye out for very tiny, almost clear shrimp on top of decarations/plants/etc. or flicking about in the water column and you might find them.

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @DaughtersBoi It really depends on the other inhabitants being kept. Any fish that can eat them, will eat them (eventually). Also, some fish will 'pick' at them, even if they can't eat the shrimp. If you are keeping smaller fish that won't terrorize them, it is definitely possible, however they won't likely reproduce successfully.

  • @craigslegs
    @craigslegs  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @BecherGaming I've never witnessed them eat actual fish poop - but under certain circumstances I'm sure it has happened (e.g. larger fish eats a smaller fish, which is only partially digested and the ghost shrimp picks out the edibles).

    @milbella1 There are two species featured, both of which were juvenile fish: Sailfin Mollies (Poecilia latipinna) and Texas Cichlids (Herichthys cyanoguttatus). The fish with the black spots are the Texas Cichlids, the rest are Sailfin Mollies. I have information, video, and pics of both species at aquaticopia(dot)com under the "My Identifications" menu.

    Just as a tip you can leave your filter on while a ghost shrimp is pregnant, just have a hiding place big enough. And also baby ghost shrimp eat little bits of algae and waste and if you only find one or two ghost shrimp its because the other shrimp including the mom ate them :(

    I just got two of these little guys for my 10g tank...do they produce a lot of waste? And do they eat a lot to the point where they would be cleaning a lot of my fishes left over food from out of the gravel/sand? Or should i get a few more to clean up the extra food particles?

    I really like this video!
    I've kept the same 6 ghosts in my tank (that sounds odd....) along with a veiltail gold, a black moor, a black molly, three lyre-tail guppies (two gals and a guy), and five platys (platies?) in the same (LARGE) tank for well over two years, now.
    They all seem happy in this little community/ecosystem.
    So far, there have been no orders for shrimp cocktail. All is good with the pH, nitrites/nitrates...although I have some difficulty with the calcium hardness (thank you, California!).
    I've noticed that I have two females who are full of little ones. Do they need some nesting? There are NUMEROUS places for them to hide, so....

      brandonlasvegas in my experience ghost shrimp are terrible at controlling algae. if you are looking for shrimp that love algae, I'd probably go with amano shrimp. Cherry shrimp are also pretty voracious when it comes to algae, one hungry female can easily clear a square inch of algae per day and they also love dead plant matter, which is good when you have a plant thats melting back in your aquarium.
