  • My video, titled "Water Fleas Daphnia pulex", was an incorrect identification of the featured specimen. Thanks to two knowledgeable people, they have been properly identified as Ostracods. "Seed Shrimp", from the taxonomic class Ostracoda, are tiny crustaceans which exist in both fresh and saltwater.

very cute little seed shrimp. We have them in the local lake as well as translucent ones without any color at all.

They are so funny, little beans zooming around, makes you think that life is so diverse.

+Uwant?iGot_RL👍 they exist in virutally all aquatic environments. chances are, eggs attached to a plant, or they were introduced through a fish, since roughly 25% of ostracods consumed by fish that lack the jaw structure to chew them will survive the digestive tract and be passed relatively unharmed through fish feces. if you pick up pebbles, detritus, or sediment from a dry lake bed they could contain dried eggs, which can survive a decade or two out of the water.

Ew these little seed things are floating on the top of my water. I thought they were some kind of eggs. I netted some and left the net dangling in the water and noticed they're swimming! They look like little fleas, I don't want them in there! I think it's from overfeeding shrimp pellets.

+minhaz shaon introduce some black skirt tetras. tetras have the proper jaw structure to eat ostracods despite their thin calcite shells.
the sailfin tetra is the preferred species as this tetra's natural diet is ostracods, but not all fish stores stock them.
