    This makes me realize how much I loved my 90 Toyota 4X4. Manual four wheel drive lever, manual locking hubs, lever activated blend doors. Good stuff!

      Sounds delightful. Too much electronic tech nowadays, and that’s coming from a 20 year old who’s pissed at all my vehicles for having electrical problems! What I wouldn’t give to just operate everything mechanically...

      I had to make a 30 minute drive in three inches of snow at 5:30 🕠 this morning and was happy as could be when I pulled the shifter on my 2002 Tacoma 4x4 and it went right into gear ⚙️ I don’t have lock out hubs but it sure did feel good when it went in gear.

    Just did this and it worked. Thanks, man!
    Before fixing it, the 4wd light just kept blinking on any selection. I drove like that for a few days then it started going on and off randomly lol. Decided to fix it. Now when I switch to 4x4 it engages and disengages flawlessly. Thanks again, man! 🇵🇭

    Mine stoped working last week after off-road fishing trip. Toyota stealership here in N.Vancouver couldn't find the problem for 2 days, so i took it home before they charge me crazy money for new actuator or God knows what alse. Watched your video and just finished work on it. It is working nice again, no problem so far! Very helpfull video, you've saved me $$$ and time! Thanks man!

    I hope this helps someone that reads this!
    I have a 2014 tacoma. I got in it and it was stuck in 4 wheel drive and I had not used my 4 wheel drive in over a week. I was almost sure this was the issue. After checking the plugs and wires and the vacuum line and all were fine. I decided to take my actuator out and check it. The motor worked fine when I hooked it up to the 12 volts. So I pit it all back together and thought about everything and thought I'd have to take it to toyota. Then I decided to check the switch in the dash and that was the issue. It wasn't bad it had just come unplugged somehow. Maybe when I had my stereo installed they didn't get it clipped all the way. So this is an option. If you try to pit your truck in 4 low improperly and it doesn't make the beeping noise or your 4 wheel drive lights are not flashing! Check the plug on your switch!!!!! Again I hope this helps someone!

    In Process - started this project and will let you know if it works once the gasket material dries and I add fluid. Here is what I learned. (1) a short (3") rachet makes taking out the upper bolt on the passenger size a breeze. (2) The screws holding the actuator together were severely corroded and almost impossible to remove with a screwdriver, I live in MI. (Thank you vice grips.) The screws can be replaced with 5mm x .80 pitch, 16 mm in length cap screws.

    I finally got my 4wd actuator fixed, Thanks for the video . The hardest part was getting that upper Right bolt back in, needed a fine tooth ratchet to get enough turn on the bolt to move it. I think mine was locked up when I took it apart the motor would not turn by hand but turned ok with power put to it. So I put some oil on the motor to free it up and soldered the leads and it works great now. Thanks Karl.

    Awesome very well detailed tutorial! I was able to fix my 07 Tacoma with this video. If it helps any one I made a mistake and move the gears which slightly misaligned the fork when I put it all together my Tacoma was detecting an error. This solution was just to reset Gears into 2 wheel drive position and it was good to go!

    Another front differential actuator fixed 2004 toyota 4runner 4.0 exactly the same. The only thing id suggest is taking the two 22mm bolts out that supports the differential it made getting to the top bolts on the actuator easy to remove and install.

    Hi. Got a 2008 (second gen) toyota tacoma 4wd V6. Problem was 4x4 was intermittent (especially in wet weather) and unreliable going from 2wd to 4wd. Did that for about a couple years but then all of a sudden it's stuck in 4wd. Read all the posts about the front ADD actuator and I assumed that was it. Took the actuator off and inspected it. Very clean inside, tested the motor and it works, soldered the connectors anyway, and put back together correctly.
    Next, went to the Transfer Case actuator. Saw the vent tube was broken and I suspected moisture. tried tapping the actuator lightly with a rubber mallet and the plastic now 13 year old vent hose nipple broke off. So, I removed the actuator and immediately saw the problem. Water inside, very badly corroded terminals, so basically a bad actuator beyond repair. Ordered a new actuator for about $250 off amazon.
    My question is this: How do I orient the transfer case shift axle to reinstall the new actuator? I believe the new actuator comes in the 2WD position (the gears inside). My old actuator was in 4WD position when taken off and the shaft was in 4wd since it was locked in 4wd. The front add is locked into 4WD. Should I take apart the new actuator and turn the gears to the 4WD position and then the new actuator will be in the same position as the old one? Or do I try to push the axle into the TC to the 2wd position (all the way in) and install the new actuator? Also, there's about 5/16" of play on the shaft. How do you make sure the shaft is positioned correctly when you put the new actuator on? Watched and read a lot and can't quite find the answer. Thanks for any input!

    • @KFloTacoma
      @KFloTacoma  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      with the 4wd actuator: You can just reinstall as is. Set your dial to 2H and unplug the battery. The computer goes through a routine to make sure that the system is in 2H prior to doing anything else.
      with the transfer case actuator: I would recommend just reusing the old shaft axle. I haven't messed with the transfer case actuator but I believe that shaft axle requires the whole transfer case to be disassembled in order to be removed

    Been there ,done that but….I never found the bad connection even thru I checked with a meter 3 times. Some how on the 4th try I found the bad connection. However this was months after the fault occurred so that by that time I had bought a new one for over 800 ca dollars. Now I have a spare for my 2 year newer truck. What caused the melted solder connection was making a 90 deg turn on pavement with my boat in tow. Just took it out of the water. Lesson learned; never take a truck out or put in 4x4 while making turns.

    Is this what I need to do? I have a 2006 Tacoma and here are the symptoms:
    1. 4WD High and low will not engage, and there is no noise when i try to engage.
    2. At all times when im driving the green 4WD light is blinking
    This began after I went down a very bumpy forest road in 2WD. Nothing out of the ordinary happened, but the next time I wanted to go into 4WD it wouldn't engage.
    wanted to get other's opinions before I take it apart.

      I would suggest inspecting the wiring to see if you have any tears on the cables. Also use some contact cleaner on the harnesses to make sure you have proper electrical connection. Are you also rolling the truck forward slowly when you're activating the 4WD? Do you have automatic or manual transmission?

    I’m having the same issue, when you turned the switch to engage 4x4, would it make any noise? If I turn the switch there is no noise from the transfer case or the front diff. If it was the front actuator wouldn’t the transfer case still try to lock?

    • @KFloTacoma

    KFlo, thanks for putting this video together! I was able to fix my 4x4 problem by following your instructions. My problem wasn't related to the contacts coming loose on the motor, however... it was because there was a bunch of water in the actuator! I got a question..? I had my 4wheel drive go out after 150k miles so I did a test to see if I could fix the original one after watching your video and it worked perfect simply needed a lil bit of solder on the connectors and it fixed the old one instantly. Soo after I fixed the old one I took it out threw it away and soldered the new one I bought straight out the box to try and bullet proof the bitch. My 08 tacoma wont go into 4wd. Just flashes the green 4wd symbol on dash and I can hear clicking in the glove box, which I assume is the ACU. I also checked the front drive shaft that runs from the transfer case to the front diff. when I engage the 4wd and hear the clicks the front drive shaft locks up. If im not mistaken this should mean that the ecu and transfer case are both operating correctly and that would point all fingers to the actuator right? Would love your opinion

    • @KFloTacoma
      @KFloTacoma  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you hear whether or not the transfer case was clicking? It's at the rear of the transmission at the rear end of the front drive shaft. What may be happening is that the transfer case and the front actuator may not be syncing up

      You would have to make sure that the adjustment forks are in between the collars during reassemble. Did you test the electric motor before hand before closing up? Make sure the contact prongs are also clean btw. The dielectric grease has a tendency of preventing good electrical contact so clean that off too before reassembly

    • @iggychloe
      @iggychloe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I did check the motor and it’s working fine just like the way you tested yours with 12V battery. I am going to disassemble the transfer case this time and set it to neutral. Hopefully it’ll turn it back to 2wd. Don’t want to drive in 4LO going to work. That’s my last resort, if still won’t work I’ll take it to the auto shop.

    • @iggychloe
      @iggychloe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Beaf supreme I found out that the vacuum rubber tubing that’s connected to the transfer case actuator is broken. I cut it to where it fits back tightly. I went ahead and disassembled and cleaned the transfer case actuator anyway and found little water inside. Part of the contacts are already corroded but I cleaned it good and put it back together.. Should Ive known that problem, I would’ve touched the front diff actuator. After disassembling the front diff actuator and transfer case actuator, it still stucked in 4wd. So I manually disengaged it. I’m back to 2wd but the 4wd light still blinking. ECU might be confused.

    Thanks so much for the video. I posted this question on TW, but haven't seen a response yet...hoping to tackle this issue tomorrow before winter sets in any further:
    I am new to Toyota and just purchased a 2010 Tacoma V6 this spring.
    Now that we have snow where I live I've discovered this problem.
    I'm going to attempt this fix tomorrow, but wanted to see if anyone has input on one thing I've noticed.
    When I turn to 4hi I get the flashing dash lights, they don't go away when switched back to 2hi, but do when engine is turned off. HOWEVER, I noticed that when they ARE flashing that I can hear a strange sound when pulling away from a stop. It's hard to describe the sound, but it almost sounds like
    rubber slipping (if that makes sense to anyone). Also hard to tell where the sound is coming from, but from the drivers seat it sounds like it could be below and behind me, not up near the engine.
    Any input would be fantastic and very much appreciated.
    Thanks!!

    • @KFloTacoma
      @KFloTacoma  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That may be the actuator attempting to engage but is not fully engaging. If it doesn't engage then the light blinks to show an error. When you turn off the car and then turn the 4wd knob to off and then start the car back up, it will reset the 4wd back to 2wd. Usually it requires the truck to start rolling prior to fully disengaging, which is probably the noise you are hearing. Once you try this fix, it will make a sliding / hammering sound whenever the 4wd engages and disengages. Once fully engaged, the lights will stop flashing.

    • @KFloTacoma

    What are the specs of the bolts for the torque wrench?

    • @KFloTacoma
      @KFloTacoma  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hand tight is fine. It's really tight in there to get a torque wrench head and a low profile socket. the RTV will keep the fluid sealed in place

    • @KFloTacoma
      @KFloTacoma  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That hose is actually a breather hose. The actuator may have taken on water and fried the motor. Take it apart and replace it. A new actuator is about $150. It's better to replace the thing at this point but if you have the time and the tools, then you can go ahead and try to perform this fix

    • @KFloTacoma
      @KFloTacoma  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to reset. Is it engaging? Did you try to turn the knob on to 4wd before starting the truck? If so, did you hear the actuator engaging?

  • @chojthoj08

    Need HELP. Once I connected with the socket to the actuator just to test, it works perfectly on the truck. But once I put it back in place it gives me 2w to 4w failure.

      Did you make sure to put the fork in-between the two shoulders of the flanges in the diff?

    • @chojthoj08
      @chojthoj08 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KFloTacoma I did. Then it shows 2w to 4w fail. Then I take it off and leave it connected with socket it works. But as soon as I put it in it doesn't. I'll order new part and see.

      If you have the front of your truck on jack stands, you should be able to move that collar back and forth by hand. Here's a video of what that assembly looks like when it's fully taken apart (Skip to 2:25):
      th-cam.com/video/JhCUFpXiQXM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=KFloTacoma
      You can align the splines by moving one of the tires by a few degrees and moving that collar back and forth - you're trying to mesh the teeth essentially.
      There should be no resistance when you move that collar back, unless there's something seizing up on the assembly

    • @chojthoj08
      @chojthoj08 ปีที่แล้ว

      @KFlo Tacoma no resistance at all. It moves smoothly. That's why it was confusing me because when I plug in the socket to test, it works perfectly fine, as soon as I put it in place, it don't even try to move to 4wheel, start up the car and the alarm comes up not even trying to go to 4 wheel. So I order a new part, hopefully that helps.

      Yea, good luck with that. Maybe the electric motor is not working under load? It may have some windings that burned out?

    The three gears in mine won’t turn. Is this normal because I see that they turn quite easily in your video.

    • @KFloTacoma
      @KFloTacoma  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should be turning. Pull them out and inspect to see if any of the teeth/bearings are broken. Clean them and then lube them up.

      Yes, it should as this is a common problem with the 3rd gens as well. Just make sure to reseal the housing

      The RTV Red that I used says that you have to wait 24 hours for it to fully cure before exposing it to any oils
