You are literally a blessing from God . Sounds kind of weird but we had a heavy snow and had to work the next morning. Went to move the truck and it went engage into 4wd . So my wife and I prayed about . Within 2 minutes of our prayer I stumbled upon your video. BINGO.... it worked. Thank you very much. Keep it up .. you never know who you will help. God bless
AWESOME!!!! I just bought a 98 Limted 4Runner from a family that NEVER used 4WD. I serviced the entire vehicle- it runs perfect, but NO 4WD! I watched your video and did the BANG on the actuator and BAM! I've got 4WD...!!! Thank you SO MUCH! It reminded me of bang a starter motor on my old Chevy Tahoe in cold weather LOL! Thanks again!
Really love this video. I greatly appreciate your knowledge. I live out in Prescott Arizona and did a trip out to crown king. After doing one recovery my 4 wheel drive wasn't working properly. The green light would flash or lock in 4 hi but wouldn't go into 2 wheel drive. Had such an awesome day but that really bugged me and frustrated me. But after trying and tapping a few times on the actuator like you suggest, Boom worked perfectly and went into 2 wheel drive. Now i can go ride my dirtbike tomorrow. Thank you very much.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I was trying everything to fix this and I really didn’t want to buy a new actuator. This fixed the problem perfectly. Thank you again!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I turned on my key in the truck, put the lever in 4WD, went under and tapped on the transfer case actuator and got nothing. Reached up above my skid plate to the one you show removed, tapped it and heard it engage! It would have taken great effort to locate the problem without your video. My first instinct was to think it was electrical, but this is an obvious mechanical problem with a stuck actuator!
Sorry to say. Who ever told you that you have to take the entire transfer case off to replace that actuator is full of shit. All u need to do is pull the 3 mounting bolt out. It will want to turn to one direction once you get the last bolt off. Its spring loaded but nothing will shoot out. I ran into the same cituation as you did. I normally like to try to fix whats already broken or break it some more then buy new parts. Well the vent hose had a little cut in it that seap water into the atuator and rusted up a few part of the electrical contact. As it slide across the contacts it will lose connection cuz of the rust and will stop actuating. So i used a piece of still wool and scuff off the rust and bent the contact tabs down some more to get a better connection. Soo far soo good. Been bout 6 years now.
Thanks @hmongwild Here's a great video by @hmongwild that shows the inside of the actuater at the transfer case. It shows how dirty contacts, plus a stuck spring can disable the 4 wheel drive. th-cam.com/video/M6qHJPfxyww/w-d-xo.html
Was that on 1st gen Tacoma? Currently working on one where its the older version of the actuator with only 2 electrical connectors with no triangle plate
@ its an 02 Tacoma i had to pull it twice within the 12 years i owned it. Watch my other video it was 2 different problems. If its the older year model im not 100% but all i know is all the actuator do is push and pull in and out of 4wd. Nothing crazy. Like I said if its already broken or not working wont hurt to pull it off and check it out. Regardless your wanting to get it working.
I give credit when credit is due. I dreaded trying to diagnose what was wrong after reading threads on Tacomaworld. My 03 did not engage while driving and would not engage. It tried to when I was going over an ice covered bridge, but I got the “slow down beep beep beep “. I tried again at a lower speed and no engagement, not indicator light. Thought it had to be electrical, but the fuse was good, front ADD looked good. Did a quick google, banged on the actuator and its working flawlessly! I’ll buy you a beer, or 12, brother.
I just was having a problem with not goi g into 4 high and it still engages 4x4 only in 4 Low. Got under my truck tapped the acuator with the rachet a couple times, and now it changes back and forth with ease. YOU JUST SAVED ME SO MUCH MONEY AND TIME AT A MECHANIC. thank you for your knowledge
Thank you so much for this video! I have a 2010 tacoma. My 4x4 recently quit working and I was dreading taking it to the dealership again. I tapped the rear actuator with my pocket knife a few times and presto! It was still a little sticky, but after engaging and disengaging it a few times it works flawlessly! Thinking back, I do remember reading the owners manual and it says to use the 4x4 on a monthly (I think) basis to keep thing lubricated.
have a 2004 tundra,4 wheel high working, but 4 wheel low would flash and not go in,tapping on Transfer Case Actuator in same place after seeing your video,4 wheel low working now...thank u much
This is such a great video. I had the same problem and was able to troubleshoot it after the dealership wanted >$600 to replace the actuator. My problem was with the front component not switching. After I undid the electrical harness and tapped it a few times it started working again right away. Thanks so much for taking the time to put this video together.

BANG! This totally worked for me; lost 4 wheel drive, and like he said in video had someone in car keep switching back and forth from H2 to H4 while I banged FRONT actuator with a hammer and on 4th bang it engaged; I never knew you were suppose to engage 4wheel drive every month to keep parts moving and lubricated; went all summer never engaging 4 wheel and got it stuck.
thanks very much just crawled underneath and did it first tried the transfer case actuator tapped it several times didn't work then tapped it again and the front axle actuator I assume it was. tried it again and it worked. thanks again
The owner's lucky he didn't have problems before, 12 years is a long life for a 4-wheel drive system these days. Hope it keeps working. Thanks for the video.
The actuators can get stuck ,I suppose, but most failures are due to the actuator's (the rear one) internal motor's electrical leads being poorly soldered. This cause intermittent operation at first. Then as the arcing increases, so does the resistance...until finally there is an open circuit.Tapping is usually not more than a short term fix...more useful for diagnosing what I just described.
Question... the front actuator when removed is there oil or ? Can you remove with out issue . 2nd Question do you need to lubricate the front actuator or the locking sleeve that slides ? Thanks great video !
My 2001 Tacoma doesn't have the motor on the back of the transfer case. But in that same spot I have a sensor. Does that sensor tell the front actuator to engage the 4x4?
Maybe this particular transfer case actuator really can’t be removed without removing the transfer case as well. BUT…Toyota service and several other mechanics told me the same thing for my 2013 Tacoma TRD, and it isn’t true. It’s actually really, really easy to remove just the actuator. This one looks very similar, but it doesn’t appear to have the access to the gear that drives the transfer case rod, so maybe it is different. Just a heads up for 2012-2016 Tacoma owners (and possibly Tundra owners as well). Thx for the video. 👍
apparently you can remove the gear out of the actuator after taking off the small cover... then after removing the mounting bolts the actuator can slide right out.
Don Veitch Exactly. I ended up doing it about ten times as I tried to fix/diagnose my transfer case. My transfer case actuator ended up being totally fine, but my transfer case spline was locked internally and it had to be entirely replaced. Sucked.
Good and informative video however in includes some conflicting information. At 3.37 min you said the transfer case actuator was engaging when the 4W button is pushed because the front transfer shaft was locking-up. At 5.20 min you said the transfer case actuator was jammed and you had to tap on it to unjam it in order to get the ADD to work.
Hmmm, I don't think there is this actuator on the manual 2wd/4wd selector, just the push button? I see a small box between the transfercase and the read drive shaft, but nothing for the front, just linkage. When 4WD is engaged, the front drive shaft locks, a click happens in the glove box, but the front axle still doesn't enagage. Maybe a bad vacuum line?

repairing the actuator is not that difficult. Just open the the three nuts in the back and pull out the rotor and from gear. But you have to put back the rotor in the right position, otherwise it wont work. Before you pull the rotor, take a picture and make sure you put it back the same way.

Would frequently using the four-wheel-drive potentially solve this issue. Have you ever or have you ever had the desire of owning a Trabant, I just watched a review video on one and I thought of you, lol
I know on my 1993 toyota surf in the manual it says engage the 4wd once a month and drive 10 miles this will apparently keep everything greased up and moving smooth. no expert though
My 07 4runner has a similar problem, but when I turn on 4hi, I know that it engages and it also stays in center diff lock while the dash lights flash. The reason I know it engages is because it binds up when turning a tight circle. But then I turn it 2wd and restart the car and it's back in 2wd. Any ideas?
push button 4wd is super sketchy, it implies that it's safe to push and put your truck in 4wd when ever you need it. when in reality 4x4 shouldn't only be used at low speeds off road.

repairing the actuator is not that difficult. Just open the the three nuts in the back and pull out the rotor and from gear. But you have to put back the rotor in the right position, otherwise it wont work. Before you pull the rotor, take a picture and make sure you put it back the same way.
Thanks. Great additional value to the thread
Here's a great video that shows the inside of the actuater at the transfer case. It shows how dirty contacts, plus a stuck spring can disable the 4 wheel drive. th-cam.com/video/M6qHJPfxyww/w-d-xo.html
@@mikeroland9751 I have a toyota 4runner 3.4...i guess the 4wd system works the same...but i pulled off the black cover and the plastic gear from the transfer case actuator and i did not mark the plastic gear....now i am having problem to find the timing or where it should be set exactly
nice tacoma 4wd awd
Mahalo so much!!! 😊🤙🏾
how to fix the 4weel drive light still on?
could be one of the position sensors. there's one on the transfer case
Any ideas?
How to fix if 4LO is one flashing?
if it's indeed engaging. There's a position sensor on the transfer case that could be the issue
Why didnt your other wheel spin too when you see it to 4wd?
الحمد لله
Transfer case actuator ....3400 dollars in 2015 from a Toyota dealer.
The tcase actuator is 100% replaceable by itself.
push button 4wd is super sketchy, it implies that it's safe to push and put your truck in 4wd when ever you need it. when in reality 4x4 shouldn't only be used at low speeds off road.
Your video was challenging to watch ....
