    Used to go rock crawling with my 92 hilux back in the day. Stuff with 37s and was a SAS. It's originally a 4x4. But I was a teenager back then. My dad knew how naughty I was. So he didn't want me to go wheeling just yet until our hilux was built. We had a SAS 4runner, and a lowered 2wd 91 hilux as well. As long as you have lovers. Sliders, and BIGG oh tires you'll still make it.

    I'll post this as a PSA and warning.
    Premier West Gears in Riverside, CA was the shop responsible for doing the gear change. They ran a large group buy on Tacoma World for full gear changes for like $1,800 when the normal going rate is $2,400 - $3,000. You should check out the thread on there, a lot of people went home with *ucked up gears, over torqued diff plugs so that when they went home to do the 500 mile gear oil refresh they couldn't loosen up the plugs, and as you can see generally sloppy work by forgetting to connect the actuactor hose. I think they were doing gear changes in like 2-4 hours. Most shops take like 8 hours to do a full front and rear gear swap. PWG was treating gear changes like a quick lube job. Cheap and fast typically never results in quality work. A proper re-gear is one of those jobs that you don't want to cheap out on, please take it to a professional and reputable shop to get it done.

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly outside of the hose not being placed back on I have no complaints about the gears and the work that was done. The gears themselves are great and all the bolts seem good. I have heard of a few people not happy with their gears but my experience was pretty positive. Again outside of the hose not being placed back on.

    I had a very similar but opposite situation My taco was stuck in 4 lo.. Was at big Bend National park and closest Dealer ship was 250 miles away... Had the truck towed from BBNP to a shade tree mechanic and at like 3 am he was able to get my brand new truck back in 2wd. Drove it 500 miles back home. Took it to the dealership they couldn't figure it out ended up replacing the Actuator and the Transfer case. I was so afraid they would not cover it cause I had some random dude work on it... Luckily they covered it all.. Blamed it on "bad from factory." Whole thing was an adventure in it's self

      Just make sure to get it done by a reputable shop and you'll be okay.

    • @christopherlaboy9377
      @christopherlaboy9377 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spot on, and at the same time if you're going to do it, as Gazziza29 points out it has to be a reputable shop. With that said I couldn't pull the string on a new truck with under 10k miles with mods that might void the warranty. What I did was to go to my local Jeep/Ram Dealership and I asked the service department if they would install a lift kit, and we went over the mods the dealership would assist on. So I was good here paying a little more for the dealership to install them since I not only have the factory warranty to worry about but I also purchased the extended warranty to 125k.

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The dealership said the only part of the warranty affected by a gear change is the gears. Everything else is still covered. I think it’s totally worth it.

    Remind me what shop 🤔 did your gears and left that essential hose off??? I want to avoid them like the plague (or in this case COVID). I like how you mentioned that you don't know who left it off trying to save face for installer. Glad you got it fixed. Also, you may want to evaluate some of those negative remarks about this issue that most likely was caused by something modified on your truck. Stinks that you spent all that time trying to fix the old actuator and it still failed. I am also surprised that the price was not too bad either.

    good easy fix, try using a little less rtv on machined surfaces like that, you really only need a little bead and you reduce the risk of some of that rtv that squeezed out on the inside from getting stuck in bearings and stuff starving internal parts of oil, I personally would have put put a small hose clamp on that sucker to reduce the risk of that hose coming off again

    • @AdventureBuilt

      The grease will harden after a few years, straining the motor. I have a 200' long straight driveway. Why did you not buy another 10 dollar motor for the old one?

    • @AdventureBuilt
      @AdventureBuilt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m all about reliability. The sure thing was a new actuator. Plus the motor wasn’t bad it was the connections.

  • @james_the_darklord
    @james_the_darklord 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That's why you have to thoroughky check your rig from top to bottom before going on the trails.
    I would still replace the actuator to keep it reliable. The motor is corroded for sure and dirt and water entered inside it.

    Not to say that it would have mattered, but I suggest watching a few soldiering videos. So Toyota wanted $1200.00 to fix it when their part was $500.00 or so. That means $700.00 for labor on something they can probably do in an hour? I would never set foot in that place again. On the other hand, good for you for replacing the bad part and getting your rig back on the road while saving some serious money. Nice video.

    • @3smoke
      @3smoke 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I noticed that solder job too. But the motor was probably smoked from the corrosion so it wouldn't have mattered.
