  • www.BiasBespoke... Buttonhole twist thread is the perfect thread for sewing buttonholes by hand. But it can be difficult to find, may not be available in the color you require, or perhaps you just want to make a more beautiful thread than you can buy! Here, Artur shows how to make the perfect buttonhole twist thread from thinner thread. This is the method that Artur learned as a lad and used regularly in his early career as a tailor in his home region. Start with silk thread or our lustrous Gabor thread. (Please note that Gabor thread is made from Polyamide, not Polyester.)

I'm a spinner. This is pretty much how one spins yarn (although in making yarn, one spins both fibers, and then plies in the opposite direction as here), but I really hadn't thought about doing this with thread to make buttonhole twist. It's brilliant!

Im doing this with my clients after restwisting their dreadlocks. Also never came to my mind that is the same thechnique i was looking for since I saw a video of Mr. Popradi doing it :).
According to his video th-cam.com/video/PcjksCSY_98/w-d-xo.html at 4:13 " it is the traditional way to make the thread for buttonholes on savile row"

Thank you for this! Getting silk thread in the right weight is weirdly difficult in my country.

Wow that's the very same technique used in Japanese embroidery to combine flat silk thread into a two ply. Sometimes it's used to make a single 2ply thread of different colors. Excellent use of this technique for a different purpose. Bravo! 🤗🤗🤗

I’m a hand spinner and this process reminds me of that- spin the singles one way, ply them in the opposite direction.

I do kinda the same but I put one of the end of the threads on a hook, and just directly twist the whole length in one direction, quite a lot, then fold in half carefully (keeping tension) and the both halves twist together by themselves.

Do you wax the thread after? I use a couture technique where the wax is applied to several pieces of cotton thread which are then placed inside a fold of paper and ironed to melt the wax into the thread.

It's possible to wax the thread and it's not necessary. If you do wax it, we recommend getting out the extra wax by pressing it into a fold of muslin or other fabric, so that, yes, the wax melts into the thread and there's none extra remaining to stain your garment's fabric.
